  • Whole health includes mind, body, and connection. Physical and mental health are deeply intertwined, and meaningful relationships are as vital as medicine in preserving wellness.
  • Personal growth thrives on integrity and lifelong learning. Staying open to change, aligning with your values, and seeking care that truly listens are foundations for both health and fulfillment.

Ian Duignan: Entrepreneurship is Building a Plane Mid-Flight11 Jun 202500:54:11

Ian Duignan began his career in Dublin as a bar manager, gaining early industry insights before transitioning to sales during the economic recession. At Arnotts, he quickly rose to managerial level, achieving €1.3 million in annual sales. He then joined Apple as a top-trained sales executive, refining his expertise in customer engagement and brand strategy.  At Audi, Ian became a top-performing sales executive, breaking records in both Dublin and London’s flagship dealership. He later joined Fulham FC as Commercial Manager, securing sponsorships with Audi, Grosvenor Casinos, and Sipsmith, and was promoted to Senior Sponsorship Sales.  Beyond Fulham, Ian co-founded BITAx, a UK-Ireland trade network, and launched Black Pearl Partners, a luxury brand partnership agency. He consulted for The Nth Degree Club, working on collaborations with Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland and The Restaurant Association’s Savoy Gala Dinner. He later joined Whiskey & Wealth Club, facilitating key partnerships.  In late 2019, Ian became Commercial Director of Craft Irish Whiskey, leveraging his luxury network to secure collaborations with Michelin and Fabergé. He played a pivotal role in The Emerald Isle Collection, featuring 30-year-old Irish whiskey and bespoke Fabergé creations, which sold for a world-record $2 million.  Appointed Managing Director and Partner in June 2020, Ian works alongside Founder Jay Bradley to position Craft Irish Whiskey as a luxury leader, overseeing global expansion into the US, Asia, and Australia while driving new whiskey and spirits development.

In this episode, Philip and Ian Duignan discuss:

  • Create demand through scarcity and craftsmanship
  • Build with passion, not just credentials
  • Think long-term: strategic partnerships and patient growth
  • Embrace the chaos and stay aligned

Lightbulb Moments:

  • Use limited availability and traditional methods to make your product desirable. As seen with Craft Irish Whiskey, controlled distribution and artisanal quality can set you apart in a crowded market.
  • Hire for cultural fit and enthusiasm over experience. A team that believes in your vision will drive momentum and innovation more effectively than one focused solely on qualifications.
  • Prioritize synergy over short-term wins. Lasting success comes from nurturing meaningful relationships and understanding that premium products and brands require time and patience to mature.
  • Entrepreneurship is unpredictable, like building a plane mid-flight. Align your sales and marketing teams, stay passionate, and approach challenges with the mindset that setbacks can be setups for future breakthroughs.

“Facts tell, but stories sell. You have to have the facts, but you also have stories to support it.” - Ian Duignan

Jerry Holisky: Navigating The Corporate Transparency Act07 Mar 202501:01:02

Jerry Holisky is a seasoned business lawyer with Aronberg Goldgehn, a full-service business law firm with offices in Chicago and Wheaton, Illinois. He focuses on the legal concerns of middle-market companies and their owners, frequently serving as the company’s outside general counsel. Jerry is a highly experienced mergers and acquisition attorney. In addition, a large portion of his practice is concentrated on Business Divorce, including strategic planning and counseling, advising on squeeze-outs, freeze-outs, and other involuntary transactions, managing litigation, and mediating/resolving ownership disputes. Jerry is a co-founder and current co-chair of the Chicago Bar Association’s Committee on Business Divorce and Complex Ownership Disputes. He has been an active member of the Institute of Illinois Business Laws, an organization which for forty years has drafted most of the business entity legislation in Illinois. Jerry is currently Co-Chair of Aronberg’s Business Divorce practice group. He previously served as the Firm’s Managing Partner from 2015-23, and before that was Chair of the Firm’s Business Law & Transaction practice.

In this episode, Philip and Jerry Holisky discuss:

  • How beneficial owner reporting just became a dead letter for most U.S. companies and U.S. citizens
  • The tortured history of the Corporate Transparency Act: how we got here
  • What’s next for the CTA: legislation, regulation, the Courts

Lightbulb Moments:

  • Be aware of the concerning revelation that the Government Accountability Office's audit disclosed that FinCEN has already granted access to the beneficial ownership information database to over 200 agencies. This raises significant privacy and security concerns that you should consider when deciding whether to voluntarily file beneficial owner reports.
  • If you have already filed beneficial owner reports with FinCEN and then the Corporate Transparency Act is ultimately ruled unconstitutional, there may be potential for your business to seek damages and attorney's fees.
  • Recognize the complexity of the political and legal landscape surrounding the Act, with various actors (litigants, courts, agencies, legislators) involved. This makes it difficult to predict the ultimate future of the CTA, so you'll need to stay vigilant and adaptable as the situation continues to evolve, especially if you are a foreign (non-US) company, or a US company with foreign owners.

“If you are a US company with no foreign owners, there is a zero chance there will be any consequences for not filing beneficial owner reports with FinCEN by March 21 and, most likely, for the rest of Trump's term. But if you are a foreign company, or a US company with foreign owners, gather all applicable reporting information now so you are ready to go when new reporting deadlines for foreign companies are announced.” - Jerry Holisky

Jerry Holisky is one of 2 attorneys that recently shared insight on what is the Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) reporting deadline and what to expect.

Jay Winkler: Networking Is A Superpower 29 Jan 202501:00:07

For more than three decades, Jay Winkler has worked with many smart and talented people and served as a leader at family-owned, privately held, and private equity-backed companies in manufacturing, non-profit, communications, consulting, consumer products, education, technology, business services, and globalization. He has started factories around the world, launched businesses, succeeded in turning around distressed ones, and helped others prosper, transition, or sell.

Jay spent nearly 20 years of his career leading and expanding the family manufacturing business where he went from working on the shop floor to becoming CEO with stops along the way overseeing the finances and operations of the company.

Jay is now a “business wingman” for company leaders and owners. Through his advisory firm, Brave Lion Group, he combines his network of highly accomplished and thoughtful professionals with his own skills and experience to help develop businesses, offer great insights to clients, collaborate, build relationships, and solve problems.

In this episode, Philip and Jay Winkler discuss:

  • The Power of Networking
  • Embracing Failure and Building Resilience
  • Exploring Near-Shoring Opportunities
  • Optimizing Business Operations and Fundraising

Lightbulb Moments:

  • Networking is a superpower that offers valuable resources and solutions to business challenges. Building a strong, selfless network is essential, as shared experiences can create instant trust and rapport. Successful leaders know the value of curiosity and asking great questions, rather than having all the answers.
  • Failures and setbacks provide valuable lessons and growth opportunities when approached with the right mindset. Resilience is crucial for business leaders to bounce back from tough situations. Learning from others who have overcome challenges can help build resilience and avoid repeating mistakes.
  • Near-shoring, or moving production closer to the target market, offers benefits like cost savings, risk reduction, and revenue growth. Assessing near-shoring in Mexico needs a boots-on-the-ground approach and a strong local network. The evolving landscape, with companies like China setting up operations in Mexico, underscores the importance of staying informed about global trends.
  • Allocating time to "work on the business," not just "in the business," is crucial for long-term growth. Leveraging your network and expertise is valuable when seeking capital from private equity or other sources. A clear strategy and value proposition are key for raising funds and making operational improvements.

“If you're a leader that is trying to collect all the information that you possibly can, to make a decision - the best way to get information is to listen and ask questions and distill that information out.” - Jay Winkler

In this episode, Philip and Lou Wallach discuss:

  • Maintaining harmony in life
  • The value of curiosity and openness
  • Adaptability and exploring
  • Cultivating non-transactional relationships

Lightbulb Moments:

  • Maintaining the balance between work, relationships, and personal fulfillment is crucial for true success. Cherish meaningful connections and long-lasting friendships that provide support beyond transactions.
  • Embrace curiosity and openness to learning from diverse perspectives and remain engaged no matter how old you are.
  • Streaming creates so many choices that it often diminishes the shared cultural experiences around television that we grew up with. The Media industry consolidation and layoffs underscore the need for adaptability and exploring entrepreneurial opportunities.
  • Take breaks, try new experiences, and connect with others to facilitate personal and professional development. Non-transactional networking and mutually beneficial collaborations foster growth. Perseverance, teamwork, and continuous self-improvement are key to reaching the next level.

“As soon as you lose your curiosity, you're done. You have to remain curious. You're honestly gonna stumble into something you really enjoy.” - Lou Wallach
