211. But I'm Not Restricting! Why Am I Still Bingeing?17 Oct 202600:35:07

"I think I am an addict, a food junkie."

That's how one listener described their experience of eating a breakfast and lunch, then finding themselves eating biscuits, ice cream, and whatever else was available by 8 PM. They weren't even hungry -- they just couldn't stop.

We had some thoughts.

For starters, there's the question of what we're calling "enough" food these days, especially when we're surrounded by people who seem to get by on a coffee and a handful of almonds. And there's the rather inconvenient fact that our bodies don't necessarily respond to restriction by politely requesting the exact amount of food they've been missing.

But this conversation takes a few turns, because what if you really ARE eating enough? What if you've stopped dieting, you've done the recovery work, and you're still finding yourself pulled toward food in ways you don't understand?

Somehow we ended up discussing the price of spaghetti bolognese in New York, the peculiar comfort of knowing what's for dinner, and how sometimes the urge to eat has surprisingly little to do with food itself.

There's more to investigate here than willpower, and plenty of room for a few a-has along the way.

210. Can't Eat Without a Screen? What Food + Screens Might Be Doing for You03 Oct 202600:36:51

Why is it sometimes so hard to eat without watching something?

In this episode, Stef and Sarah look at the relationship between food and screens from two very different personal experiences. For Stef, screens used to make it possible to eat without having to listen to the running commentary in her head about what or how much she was eating. Over time, even after restriction eased, the pairing itself had become familiar enough that taking one part away could still feel like a loss.

Sarah's experience was different. Food and television became a way to fill empty evenings and make being alone feel easier, until the combination started to feel less like enjoyment and more like something she had to keep doing.

That leads into a bigger question about what we're actually looking for when we pair food with stimulation. Sometimes it really is just pleasurable. Sometimes it helps us stay regulated. And sometimes it gives us distance from thoughts or feelings we don't want to be alone with.

They also talk about distracted eating, why removing the screen can actually make eating harder for some people, and the difference between being distracted and being disconnected from yourself.

Plus: Mike gets recruited as the control subject with a suspiciously uncomplicated relationship with food, Sarah figures out something about loneliness in real time, and Stef makes an unexpectedly convincing case for red onion.

Travel Triggers: Fear of Flying, Eating Around Others, and Transitioning Home01 Oct 202500:49:54

Travel isn't just about the logistics of getting from one place to another — it's the nervous system spikes, the old body image stories that flare when you're around people from your past, and the challenge of feeding yourself in a group.

In this episode, I talk about a recent trip with college friends and the layers that came with it:

  • Flight anxiety and how I work with my body in real time when panic hits mid-air

  • The anticipatory dread before seeing old friends (and why it often feels worse than the reality)

  • Navigating group meals without abandoning your own needs

  • The strange crash that happens when you come home and how to soften that landing

  • What it takes to speak up when diet culture sneaks into social situations

If you've ever come back from a trip feeling heavy, disconnected, or like you lost your footing with food, you're not alone. This conversation unpacks why travel brings all of this to the surface and how to move through it without betraying yourself.

A Somatic Practice for Feeling Full But Not Finished; Q&A: Body Image Overstimulation while traveling24 Sep 202500:40:53

In this episode of Life After Diets, host Stefanie Michele explores the strange tension of being "full but not finished."Many people know the feeling: the body signals fullness, yet something inside still wants more. What does that reveal about the way we relate to food, our emotions, and ourselves?

Rather than reducing the issue to hunger and fullness cues alone, this conversation looks at the cultural "shoulds" that hover over eating, the rebellion that comes from restriction, and the nervous system's role in making food feel safe or unsafe. Stefanie unpacks why stopping at the first sign of fullness often backfires, and why the experience of eating can be as much about psychology and emotional regulation as it is about physiology.

The episode also weaves in a listener story about body image distress in an unexpected setting, highlighting how struggles with food are rarely isolated—they echo into how we manage overwhelm, shame, and self-perception in everyday life.

The episode asks bigger questions about what we're really hungry for, how permission changes the eating experience, and what it takes to feel truly satisfied—not just physically, but emotionally too.

Was All-In Recovery As Easy As It Looked? with Stefanie Michele17 Sep 202500:37:37

In this episode, Stefanie revisits the early days of her "all-in" recovery from binge eating and restriction. She shares raw excerpts from personal emails she wrote at the time, capturing the fear, doubt, and body image struggles of letting go of food rules on her 40th birthday.

Stefanie reflects on why this attempt at recovery succeeded when so many earlier ones hadn't, and what it really means to be ready for change.

She also answers a listener question about the most sensible advice clients resist, explaining why nervous system safety and readiness matter more than logic when it comes to eating regularly or buying clothes that fit.

If you've ever wondered what "all-in" looks like from the inside—or why advice can sound simple but feel impossible—this episode will meet you there.

209. Navigating Loss of Identity (not like a Mean Girl); Q&A: How to cope with diet culture talk in the break room10 Sep 202500:30:34

In this solo episode of Life After Diets, Stefanie Michele takes a deeply personal look at identity — how it forms, how it gets tangled up with food and body image, and how it shifts in the process of recovery. With her co-host Sarah leaving the podcast, Stefanie reflects on what it means to carry the podcast forward on her own and how that mirrors the ways we all renegotiate who we are when familiar roles change.

She shares vulnerable stories from her teenage years, including moments when dieting and comparison became tied to her sense of belonging, and how those early identities carried forward into adulthood. Stefanie unpacks the pull of societal validation — being seen as the "fit one," the "healthy one," or even the "struggling one" — and how these labels can feel both protective and limiting.

The episode also explores the everyday challenges of navigating diet culture, from handling casual food and body talk to setting boundaries that protect your well-being. Stefanie discusses practical ways to self-soothe, create space for uncomfortable emotions, and question the narratives that no longer serve you.

More than a story of food or recovery, this conversation is about identity itself: the parts of us we protect, the roles we cling to, and the freedom that comes with exploring new ways of being.

207. I'm Not Bingeing But I'm Not Healed, Either20 Aug 202500:42:09

Recovery from disordered eating doesn't end the moment bingeing stops — that's often where an entirely new phase begins. In this episode, Stef and Sarah unpack the often-overlooked "middle ground" of recovery — the stage where the chaos of bingeing has quieted, but true peace with food still feels out of reach.

Stef describes this phase as a kind of emotional limbo: the urgency is gone, but now there's loneliness, uncertainty, and a disorienting sense of now what?. Sarah shares how she moved from bingeing to occasional overeating, and how easy it was to slip into black-and-white thinking without recognizing the real progress she'd already made.

Together, they explore:

  • what this "no man's land" actually looks and feels like

  • why it's normal to struggle more with self-image once the bingeing stops

  • the importance of community, language, and support during this time

  • how to build trust in yourself before everything feels fully healed

  • why this middle stage isn't failure — it's where real integration happens

If you're past the acute phase but still don't feel "recovered," this conversation will help you name where you are, trust the process, and move forward with more clarity (and less self-judgment).

206. What If Food Freedom Looks Different for Different Brains? Guest Marcus Kain is back!06 Aug 202500:52:45

Marcus returns as the only guest we've ever invited back to the podcast, and in this conversation, he opens up about his evolving understanding of neurodivergence — particularly through the lens of autism — and how that realization has reshaped his recovery from an eating disorder, his relationships, and his sense of self.

With honesty, nuance, and hard-won clarity, Marcus shares what it's been like to recognize autistic traits later in life, to untangle years of masking, and to reframe behaviors that once felt like personal failings as natural responses to a world not built for his brain.

We talk about the overlap between autism and disordered eating, the tension between sensory overwhelm and nourishment, and the emotional weight of trying to function in social environments that feel confusing or unsafe.

This episode moves slowly and intentionally through themes of identity, regulation, emotional flooding, and the pressure to "get it right" in recovery. It's a conversation for anyone who's ever suspected that their struggles with food, emotion, or connection might be rooted in something deeper than what's visible, and for anyone curious about the intersection of neurodivergence and healing.

205. But The Worse I Feel About My Body, the More I Want to Eat. (Make it make sense!)23 Jul 202500:41:47

You'd think feeling bad about your body would make you eat less. But often, it does the opposite — and no, you're not broken for that.

In this episode, we talk about the counterintuitive link between body image spirals and the urge to binge eat. We share our own experiences of how fear, shame, and catastrophizing can kick off the cycle — sometimes even before any actual restriction happens. From the mental scarcity that shows up just at the idea of cutting back, to the sensory panic of tight jeans, we explore what's really going on beneath the surface.

We also talk about:

  • Why planning to restrict often triggers the binge

  • The role of black-and-white thinking and emotional escape

  • How body discomfort creates urgency to numb out

  • Practical strategies for de-escalating the moment (including algorithm cleanup and body neutrality)

Plus, we share some food updates, lighter moments, and how this overlaps with topics from our other podcast, Feelings and Other Inconveniences.

If you've ever felt confused or ashamed about bingeing after a "bad body day," this episode will help you understand why — and what to do about it.

203. But I Don't How to Rest so I End Up Eating25 Jun 202500:38:28

Ever feel like food is the only way you're allowed to rest?

In this episode, we dive into the complicated overlap between rest, productivity, and eating — especially when slowing down feels wrong.

We talk about using food to procrastinate, to collapse, or "let go" … and the cultural guilt that makes true rest so hard to claim.

202. People Pleasers Make the Best Overeaters11 Jun 202500:39:48

This week, we're talking boundaries—the invisible lines that protect our time, energy, and sanity (when we actually enforce them).

Stef and Sarah unpack what boundaries really are (hint: not just saying "no"), how they show up in our bodies, our relationships, and our work—and why so many of us struggle to hold them.

From family dynamics to friend drama, people-pleasing traps to food boundaries, they share real stories of what it takes to define and defend your limits without guilt.

They also get into the psychology behind rigid vs. porous boundaries, how social conditioning makes it harder for some of us to draw the line, and why clear communication isn't just helpful—it's essential.

If you've ever felt like setting a boundary makes you mean—or like you're constantly betraying yourself just to avoid conflict—this conversation is for you.

Tune in for a candid, compassionate look at how to honor your needs and why boundaries aren't just protective… they're a form of kindness.

198. But What Is a Craving, Anyway? (we're still debating it)30 Apr 202500:40:36

In this live-streamed episode, Stef and Sarah explore the nuanced world of cravings — what drives them, how they differ from binge or overeating urges, and why they're often more complicated than they seem.

They discuss the physiological and emotional undercurrents behind cravings, from hormonal shifts to nervous system dysregulation, weaving in personal experiences — including Stef's two most memorable pregnancy cravings.

The conversation unpacks how cravings show up differently for restrictors versus permitters, how appetite and craving aren't always the same thing, and what it looks like to approach cravings from a more regulated, self-led mindset.

Rather than reducing cravings to something to fix or fear, this episode invites a deeper, more compassionate understanding of them — one that honors both biology and psychology.

197. But My Body Image Is All Over the Place23 Apr 202500:42:10

In this episode, Stef and Sarah are talking about body image fluctuations.

They kick things off with Stef admitting she's been in a bit of a funk lately, which has her feeling some body image blues.

They chat about how our moods can totally mess with how we see our bodies—like when you're tired or anxious, everything feels heavier and more irritating.

Stef talks about the importance of recognizing these mood shifts and working on regulating them before trying to 'fix' anything else.

They also tackle the topic of 'floods'—those visceral reactions to body image triggers—and share some strategies for managing them when they hit. They also highlight the confusing mix of emotions when weight changes feel different depending on the context.

Sarah shares an amusing anecdote about feeling self-conscious in a string bikini.

Stef touches on her past struggle with 'reverse body dysmorphia,' where she clung to an outdated image of her younger self.

They wrap up with some thoughts on how seasons influence our body image and the power of gradual exposure.

Overall, this episode is a mix of raw honesty, empathy, and practical tips for anyone navigating the ever-changing landscape of body image.

194. But I Can't Diet (and I'm Mad/Sad About It!) - Part Two02 Apr 202500:47:54

In this episode, Sarah and Stef explore the topic of why they decided to make this a rare two-part series. Stef sparked the idea due to a client's suggestion to dive deeper into the emotional aspects tied to realizing one can't diet anymore.

They chat about their personal experiences and how differently they feel about the inability to diet.

Stef shares that she often felt anger, stemming from the frustrating feeling of being controlled by an uncontrollable force.

Sarah, on the other hand, felt sadness and a bit of unease about not being able to diet, describing a conflict between what she believed and what she felt.

The discussion then shifts to the process and emotions tied to this realization. Stef talks about how her next phase of evolution might be becoming softer with herself, while Sarah contemplates if she should be more disciplined. They both recognize that regardless of the approach, the feeling of trying their best despite obstacles is very sobering.

Both hosts touch on the grief associated with recognizing they can't diet anymore—an emotion that only surfaced fully during their recovery journeys. They discuss how memories of past attempts come rushing back, creating a whirlwind of feelings and self-reflection.

193. But Now I Can't Diet Even if I Want To!26 Mar 202500:36:49
Sarah and Stef delve into the complex emotions around dieting and the struggles of non-diet living.   To kick things off, Sarah brings up the topic of feeling stuck between wanting to diet and feeling like you can't, even if you wanted to. This sets the stage for a thoughtful discussion about how dieting, and the decision to step away from it, evokes a range of emotions—from failure to empowerment.   Stef offers personal anecdotes and client stories, revealing how the dieting mindset is often ingrained in us from a young age, making it a tough cycle to break. She highlights the difference between making an active decision to stop dieting and feeling like you simply can't keep up with it anymore.   Throughout the episode, both Sarah and Stef share their own journeys and how they moved from a place of restrictive eating to embracing a non-diet lifestyle. Along the way, they touch on common pitfalls, like fantasizing about the benefits of dieting, only to be reminded of its psychological toll.   The duo also explores how important it is to find a middle ground. This is not about completely giving up or indulging without thought but about finding a balanced, mindful approach to eating that nurtures both body and soul.   One standout moment is when they discuss the concept of agency—and the sticky truth that empowerment can indeed come from weight control -- but it can also come from self-alliance.   Looking for a  course about how to fold in health considerations after recovery without a diet culture lens? 190. Melissa Guest05 Mar 202500:49:16

In this guest episode, Stef's former client Melissa shares her story of leaving Overeaters Anonymous after twenty years to heal her "inner munchie." Melissa, a therapist from Michigan who also has ADHD, explains how her disordered relationship with food began at a young age when she couldn't "control" her sweet cravings and inherited shame about this part of herself. Working to integrate all of her Parts through Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, Melisssa worked towards an Intutive Eating model and allowed herself to incorporate all foods in a radical departure from her OA food plan.

Melissa Persechini is a licensed therapist specializing in trauma and addiction. With a Master's Degree in Social Work and 17 years of clinical experience, she integrates techniques such as Internal Family Systems (IFS), mindfulness, and somatic approaches. She founded the Women and Girls Empowerment Center in 2015 after noticing women shared common threads of inner strength and resiliency. Melissa believes women have a unique ability to heal themselves once they are able to uncover their inner resources and learn to practice self-compassion. She identifies as a wounded healer and is committed to ongoing personal growth.

188. Acceptance vs Defeat; Toastmasters and speed-puzzling; therapeutic techniques for resistance; being in a larger body on an airplane; body allowance vs body acceptance19 Feb 202500:40:03

In this episode, Sarah and Stef explore how body acceptance might feel like defeat for many who have struggled to change their bodies and feel oppressed by their circumstances. They dissect how acceptance is a proactive practice that differs from the feeling of defeat, which is reactionary and involves a perceived loss against external forces. Stef shares personal insights on how acceptance can feel oppressive when it seems to invalidate self-advocacy, while Sarah discusses how resistance to acceptance often stems from fear and shame.

The conversation touches on therapeutic techniques to work through resistance, the importance of validating and allowing resistant feelings, and the transformative power of willingness and allowing reality as it is without judgment. They also talk about the importance of having a supportive space where resistance can be discussed openly and without the urge to "fix" it immediately.

Towards the end, they discuss real-world applications of these concepts, bringing in examples like discomfort on airplanes due to body size and personal triggers in relation to diet culture. They also investigate how contextualizing experiences as non-personal and understanding biological and psychological underpinnings can help shift perspectives from defeat to empowerment.

186. But what about GLP-1 and Weight Loss Medications for People with Disordered Eating?05 Feb 202500:41:45

Welcome to Episode 186 of "Life After Diets," where Stef and Sarah dive into a topic we've surprisingly not tackled before—GLP-1 medications and their implications. GLP-1, commonly known from brands like Ozempic, has been generating buzz for its use in weight management. In this episode, Stef and Sarah unpack the complexities of this tender subject, sharing their personal and professional insights.

We kick things off by reminiscing about a previously unreleased episode that touched on similar themes. From there, Sarah candidly discusses the difficulties she faces when speaking about GLP-1s, including the delicate balance of expressing personal opinions without unduly influencing listeners. Stef and Sarah highlight their different perspectives on the scientific, psychological, and societal impacts of these medications, especially their effects on those with disordered eating patterns.

The conversation touches on the lack of long-term studies, the potential for misuse, and the ethical dilemmas surrounding GLP-1s. They also explore how societal pressures and weight stigma can influence one's decision to use these medications. In a thoughtful exchange, Stef shares experiences from clients who have benefitted and those who have struggled with GLP-1s, emphasizing the need for self-awareness and personalized decision-making.

Throughout the episode, our hosts aim to provide a safe and non-judgmental space for discussing these medications, recognizing the varied experiences and choices of individuals. The episode concludes with reflections on the broader implications for society and our health systems, expressing a blend of skepticism and hope for future understanding.

185. But How Do I Stop Body Checking?29 Jan 202500:40:07

This episode delves into topic of body checking—when individuals habitually monitor their body size or shape. Sarah and Stef share personal experiences, discussing their different relationships with body checking.

Stef candidly describes how body checking was a way to manage her anxiety and provides insights into her journey towards recovery, detailing strategies such as changing her response to body checking rather than trying to stop the behavior outright.

Sarah contrasts with Stef by explaining that during her episodes of binge eating and rapid weight gain, she avoided body checking because it was too distressing. She highlights the psychological differences between those who body check for reassurance and those who avoid it to mitigate anxiety.

The hosts explore the intersection of body checking with trauma, underlining how people with histories of trauma might find body checking as a safety measure. They also touch upon the impactful role of societal norms and how they can influence habits like weighing oneself.

Throughout the episode, the importance of creating a safe environment for oneself is emphasized. The hosts provide practical advice for those struggling with body checking, such as gradually reducing the frequency of checks and changing the emotional response to the act of checking. The episode concludes with a call to reflect deeply on the meaning behind body checking behaviors and the potential for long-term change through developing safety and self-compassion.

178. But How Does Alcohol Affect My Eating?11 Dec 202400:36:53

In this episode, the hosts delve into the complex relationship between alcohol and eating disorders, particularly binge eating. They start the discussion by sharing personal anecdotes about how alcohol influences their social interactions and how different cultures toast and drink. The conversation then shifts to how alcohol can trigger binge eating and decreases inhibitions, leading to loss of control around food, and sometimes serves as a substitute for food-related restrictions.

Various facets of this relationship are explored, such as the cultural and emotional reasons behind drinking, the physical effects of alcohol on the body and appetite, and the psychological impacts like guilt and self-disgust. They also touch upon the concept of "drunkorexia," where individuals skip meals to save calories for drinking, and discuss strategies some use to avoid drinking or manage its effects.

The episode offers insights on addressing these issues, such as giving up alcohol in a non-restrictive way, setting boundaries, and understanding the underlying emotional needs that lead to drinking or binge eating.

If you're struggling with the intersection of alcohol and disordered eating, this episode provides a thoughtful exploration and practical advice.

169. But How Do I Experience JOY?09 Oct 202400:39:49

In this lively and unique episode, Sarah and Stef delve into the concept of joy. They share their personal experiences and struggles with finding joy, reflecting on moments that brought them happiness and the impact those moments had on their mental states. From a sunny drive to Brighton listening to summer reggae (Sarah) to a rollercoaster ride with her daughters (Stef), they explore how joy can stem from both big and small moments. They also discuss the complications of linking joy to external validation (like viral YouTube success or getting asked out by a crush) versus the pure joy from unconnected experiences like nature, music, or meaningful connections. Through their candid conversation, they connect the dots between joy, peace, gratitude, and even existential realizations, proposing that our defenses may often block joy. Along the way, both hosts get a bit vulnerable and offer insights into leaning into moments of discomfort as a way to invite more joy into life.
