On Reddit, Paul Sarker decided to answer some questions from MCU fans about how the legal side of things functions. One fan asked about NDA's and their stipulations. To this question, Sarker delivered the most extensive answer about how these agreements are drawn up and executed. It's a fascinating window into the creative process. Sarker’s answer: "The NDAs are helpful and they frame the discussion, if there is ever a dispute. But the relationship is also important. Leaking something would burn a bridge and be a deal breaker. Plus everything is watermarked so they would be able to trace it to someone. And more importantly, why would you want to eliminate your chance of being in the MCU or television canon? Once someone is cast and under contract, they may be able to disclose their role but that would have to be coordinated with marketing and creative. There is an overall master plan behind all of that stuff. If you breach a contract, in addition to being sued they could terminate it or withhold some pay. Marvel is very protective of confidentiality. They vet everyone and everything. Anyone coming to an office or getting a link to confidential information will have to sign an NDA. It's not just limited to talent."

Marvel Developing ‘Wonder Man’ Series With Destin Daniel Cretton, Andrew Guest (Exclusive) https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/wonder-man-marvel-disney-1235166956/ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton has teamed up with Andrew Guest, a writer-producer on comedies such as Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Community, to tackle a live-action series featuring the longtime Marvel character. Guest will serve as head writer of the series, while Cretton will exec produce and possibly direct an episode or more. Cretton is working via his overall deal with Marvel Studios, signed late last year in the glow of Shang-Chi’s success. The two will also act as co-creators for the series. Wonder Man is one of Marvel’s oldest characters, first introduced in 1964 in the pages of Avengers No 9. He was initially a villain and only appeared sporadically in the early Marvel Age, but was reconceived as a hero (and Avenger) in the late 1970s. In the 1980s, the character really came into his own. Known as Simon Williams, he was a founding member of the Los Angeles-based West Coast Avengers and, with a look that included a turtleneck, a red jacket and sunglasses, became a celebrity thanks to his day job as an actor and stuntman.

Disney/Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness crossed $400M yesterday at the domestic box office during its 41st day of release.

The movie is still the second highest-grossing film of 2022 to date behind Top Gun: Maverick, which beat it to $400M in 18 days, and now stands at $416M. In regards to the pandemic, Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home reigns as the highest-grossing since mid-March 2020, both stateside and worldwide with $804.7M and $1.9 billion. After that in U.S./Canada, Top Gun: Maverick is second and Doctor Strange 2 is third.

Doctor Strange 2 is the tenth Disney MCU title to cross $400M in U.S./Canada after Avengers: Endgame ($858.3M), Spider-Man: No Way Home, Black Panther ($700.4M), Avengers: Infinity War ($678.8M), The Avengers ($623.3M), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($459M), Captain Marvel ($426.8M), Iron Man 3 ($409M) and Captain America: Civil War ($408M).

Doctor Strange 2 became director Sam Raimi’s highest-grossing movie ever on a global basis some time ago, surpassing Spider-Man 3 ($895M), and with a current worldwide take of $935.3M ($535M overseas). However, on a domestic basis, Doctor Strange 2 is the director’s second highest-grossing after 2002’s Spider-Man which stands at $407M.

In addition to a lithograph featuring Miles Morales and Spider-Man 2099, which was apparently given out to attendees at the festival, Sony shared an image from the film, and a little bit of casting news. Some of this stuff was already known after CinemaCon, when Sony showed the first 15 minutes of the film, with the introduction of Issa Rae as Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman. Other additions to the cast include Jorma Taccone as The Vulture and Shea Whigham as the "by-the-books" police captain George Stacy. Also announced was The Spot, Miles Morales's most formidable foe yet. He is voiced by Jason Schwartzman.

Marvel's I Am Groot Release Date Revealed on New Poster https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/marvel-i-am-groot-release-date-poster/ Marvel Studios has released the first poster for I Am Groot, the upcoming animated Disney+ Original Series. The poster confirms that I Am Groot will debut on the streaming service on August 10th. As the title suggests, the cartoon spotlights Groot, the floral colossus of the Guardians of the Galaxy, in his "Baby Groot" form. The series is made up of shorts that see Baby Groot getting into and out of trouble in a world of photorealistic animation. Vin Diesel returns to voice Groot and Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is one of the show's executive producers.

While the Marvel film has some new competition with Top Gun: Maverick, it's still having success at the box office. The Sam Raimi-directed MCU flick has officially crossed $900 million at the worldwide box office.  Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness has earned an estimated $909.4 million as of Sunday. $388.7 million of the total is from the domestic box office while $520.7 million comes from the international box office. The movie managed to hit $900 million after five weekends without ever being released in China or Russia.

Reese answered, "It was Fox, all these different people, and now it's not those people anymore. It's these [Disney] people and these people do things their way. On Thursday, reports indicated that Jake Schreier has been tapped to direct an upcoming Thunderbolts movie, with Black Widow's Eric Pearson set to write the script and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige set to produce. It is unclear at this point who could make up the cast of Thunderbolts, a team that traditionally consists of supervillains and antiheroes going on missions, initially to convince the general public that they are operating as heroes. The first comic incarnation of the team was led by Baron Zemo, with other members including Songbird, Moonstone, Taskmaster, U.S. Agent, Crossbones, Abomination, Ghost, and more. The team gets its namesake from General Thunderbolt Ross (William Hurt), but following Hurt's passing earlier this year, it's anyone's guess as to how that aspect of the storyline could be handled.

Sources tell us that Disney is looking to focus on the D23 Expo 2022 as it’s the first one since the pandemic and that they want the heavy hitters like Marvel to be there. Marvel Studios has a lot coming up on their slate. With shows like She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, Secret Invasion, and Daredevil or movies like Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels, it makes sense for Disney and Marvel Studios to promote these at an in-house event. D23 Expo 2022 will run from September 9-11 and we can expect new announcements then.

Hawkeye Season 2 Still a Possibility After Emmy Category Change https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/hawkeye-season-2-still-possibility-after-emmy-category-change/ There's renewed hope for a second season of the Disney+ original series Hawkeye. After Disney decided to list Hawkeye in the Limited Series category for the 2022 Emmy Awards, the Mouse House is pivoting to recategorize the show, which gives Hawkeye a better chance at seeing a possible Season 2. The official Disney Studio Awards page now has Hawkeye listed for "Outstanding Comedy Series" instead of "Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series." Obviously, the words "Limited Series" points to a series only having one installment instead of multiple seasons. But since Hawkeye has been categorized, the odds lean more favorably for our Hawkeye stars to once again return to Disney+.  There are many different avenues Hawkeye Season 2 could decide to go down. With the finale pointing to Kate Bishop officially taking up the Emerald Archer moniker as well, it could focus more on her exploits and less on Clint Barton, in a "passing the torch" scenario. Plus, there's always the hope that Marvel continues to tease a Young Avengers formation as more and more of the heroes are introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Passes The Batman With $800M at Box Office https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/doctor-strange-2-box-office-800-million-pass-batman/ The two biggest box office totals in the pandemic era now belong to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Spider-Man: No Way Home broke box office records when it was released back in December and now boasts one of biggest theatrical hauls in history. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hasn't quite reached those heights, but it has joined its MCU counterpart in elite company, becoming the second-biggest box office performer since 2020. It also passed this year's other big comic movie hit: The Batman. This weekend, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness passed $800 million at the global box office. As far as pandemic-era movies go, that's good enough for second overall, behind Spider-Man: No Way Home's $1.89 billion. The weekend saw Sam Raimi's Doctor Strange sequel pass The Batman ($768.5 million) and No Time to Die ($774.3 million).

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Crew Gifts Hint at Major Change to Namor and Atlantis in MCU https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/black-panther-wakanda-forever-crew-gifts-hint-at-major-change-to-namor-and-atlantis-in-mcu/ Production on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever wrapped earlier this spring and while much of the upcoming film remains a mystery, newly revealed wrap gifts for the film's crew may hint at a major change to Namor and Atlantis in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Over the weekend, images of the hat and sweatshirt given to the crew that worked on the film were shared on social media with the hat in particular featuring a colorful image that looks a bit like it could be a version of Tepeyollotl, the Aztec jaguar god. As you can see, the hat in particular features a cat face surrounded by colorful plumage, which is very similar to depictions of Tepeyollotl. It's a really beautiful graphic, but if that is indeed what the graphic is meant to look like, it would bolster the persistent rumor that the MCU's version of Namor will be of Central American origin. Following the casting of Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta in the film, not only was it widely speculated that the actor would be playing Namor, but that Namor's origin would shift as well. There have also been multiple reports of the film casting for Mesoamerican characters as well as more recent reports that Atlantis will instead be a submerged city in Mexico or Central America. Box Office: ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Second Weekend Set to Put Out ‘Firestarter’ https://variety.com/2022/film/box-office/box-office-doctor-strange-2-second-weekend-firestarter-1235266821/ The Marvel superhero’s standalone sequel took in $16.7 million on Friday from 4,534 locations, marking an 81% drop from its massive $90 million opening day tally a week ago. As with most Marvel Cinematic Universe entries, “Strange 2” is revealing itself to be a frontloaded box office affair, though there isn’t much on May’s release slate that looks to pose much competition except for Focus Features’ “Downtown Abbey: A New Era” next week and Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick” on Memorial Day weekend. After the expected plummet from a fanatic-packed opening day tally, “Multiverse of Madness” should balance out to around a 67% drop for the weekend. That’s on the steeper side of sophomore weekend drops for a Marvel Studios entry, though by starting with the eleventh-biggest domestic debut of all time there isn’t anywhere to go from there but down. On Friday, Disney announced that “Strange 2” had crossed $550 million globally in just nine days. The film should surpass a $300 million domestic gross sometime over the next week.

Disney+ Will Have Fewer Commercials Than Hulu, But Buyer Demand Is “Extraordinary”, Ad Chief Rita Ferro Says; Netflix And Other Newcomers Should Note “It Isn’t Easy” https://deadline.com/2022/05/disney-plus-advertising-streaming-rita-ferro-upfronts-1235027341 Rita Ferro, president of ad sales for Disney, said the forthcoming ad-supported tier of Disney+ will have a less “robust” amount of ads compared with Hulu. That disparity, at least initially, will mainly be because about 65% of subscribers come to the streaming service for movies, which don’t lend themselves to commercial interruption. “Movies are the reason people come to the platform, and movies have a different ad load,” she explained. The family-friendly nature of Disney+ will also limit the scope to “four-quadrant” advertisers. Disney last evening hosted its upfronts pitch to advertisers and aside from a brief tease from CEO Bob Chapek at the outset, there were no specifics offered about the ad tier. Consumer pricing, timing and other details are still TBD. Speaking alongside Disney CFO Christine McCarthy at a conference hosted by Wall Street research firm MoffettNathanson, Ferro said the plan is to “start slow” with 15- and 30-second spots before adding the full suite of ad options on Disney+. Since the announcement earlier this year about the ad-supported option, she said, “I can’t even tell you the demand we’ve had for this. … The response has been extraordinary.”

Rumors have persisted for some time that a Disney+ series about the Man Without Fear was in the works, especially considering that two of the stars of the Netflix “Daredevil” series — Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio — have appeared in recent Marvel projects. Cox once again played Matt Murdock, the secret identity of Daredevil, in the film “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” while D’Onofrio reprised the role of Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. Kingpin, in the Disney+ series “Hawkeye.” It now appears that the project is picking up steam with the hiring of Corman and Ord, although Marvel has yet to announce anything regarding the show formally. Fans have been clamoring for more Daredevil ever since the Netflix series was canceled in 2018 after three seasons. They were in for a long wait, however, as Variety reported in 2018 that the deal with Netflix included a clause that prevented any characters from the Marvel-Netflix shows from appearing in any non-Netflix projects for two years after cancellation. The move came as Disney looked to bring its Marvel heroes under one umbrella, with multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe shows having since debuted on Disney+. “Moon Knight” starring Oscar Isaac was the last such show to premiere, with a trailer for the “She-Hulk” series starring Tatiana Maslany dropping earlier this week.

Doctor Strange 2 Proves Disney Doesn't Need China, Says CEO Bob Chapek https://www.cbr.com/doctor-strange-2-disney-china-ceo-bob-chapek/ CEO Bob Chapek recently commented on the difficulties both Disney and Marvel Studios seems to be having when it comes to getting blockbuster projects into theaters in China. Chapek suggested that it should not be a concern, as evidenced by the ongoing box office success of films such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. At a recent post-earnings conference call, Chapek stated, "We’ve got a long track record of success and a strong fan base for our brands and franchises in this market... We'll continue to submit our films for release. And it is worth noting, I think, though, that at the time that we are having some difficulty in getting our films in China, that Doctor Strange did extraordinarily well." He added, "So we’re pretty confident that even without China, if it were to be that we continue to have difficulties in getting titles in there, that it doesn’t really preclude our success given the relatively lower take rate that we get on the box office in China than we do across the rest of the world." Thus far, the Doctor Strange sequel has grossed approximately $507.8 million at the box office worldwide, including $213.6M domestically. The financial success of the recently released Marvel Studios film follows shortly after the monumental success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which earned $1.89 billion worldwide, without ever being released in China.

Disney+ Hits 137.7M Subscribers, Beating Wall Street Expectations in Streaming https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/disney-q2-2022-earnings-streaming-1235144837/ Disney once again beat Wall Street expectations last quarter in streaming, adding 7.9 million Disney+ subscribers, and suggesting that the company may be positioned to take a lead in what has become a cutthroat race to the top in streaming. While Wall Street expectations for Disney+ were varied, a midpoint expectation was 4.5 million to 5 million adds. Disney reported revenue of $19.2 billion and income of $3.7 billion, with earnings per share of $1.08. Wall Street expectations were for revenue of $20.1 billion, operating income of $3.3 billion, and EPS of $1.17. The EPS miss could be due to a change in tax regulations, which saw the company’s effective tax rate balloon from 8.8 percent a year ago to 45.8 percent last quarter. Disney also took a $1 billion hit related to ending content licensing agreements early that it could use it on its own streaming service. Disney didn’t break out what that programming was, but it is likely the output deal with Netflix, including the streaming services’ Marvel series.
