Father’s Day Special with Rob Parsons19 Jun 202600:47:21

Join Andy Lamberton for a special Father’s Day conversation with Rob Parsons on the Legacy Podcast. Happy Father’s Day!! — Send this episode to your dad!

Packed with inspiring stories that will make your jaw drop, your belly ache from laughing and your soul lift. Rob reflects on being a father, the people who shape us, and how a homeless man arriving at his door with a frozen chicken one Christmas changed his life.

Our thanks to Rob for joining us, and to Care for the Family for all they do to strengthen families across the UK and beyond. We cannot recommend them enough!

Rob Parsons
In 1988, Rob left his career as a senior partner in a successful law practice to found Care for the Family from a small office behind a hairdresser’s in Cardiff. More than 35 years later, it has grown into one of the UK’s leading family charities, with over 80 staff supporting families across the country and resources used around the world. Rob was awarded an OBE in 2012 for services to family support.

Read his outstanding story A Knock a the Door, and a timeless, uplifting and impactful book for fathers: The Sixty Minute Father.

Anthony Bradley LIVE with Andy Lamberton at Regular Joes14 Nov 202500:37:16
Manoah was Samson’s dad. And like most good dads, he goes unnoticed in the story. He was a Regular Joe.

He hears he will have a son of immense potential — yet his first response is a humble, straightforward prayer:“Lord, teach me how to raise the boy.”Now that’s a prayer we can all pray.

Samson’s story zig-zags.The whole book of Judges summarises itself in its final verse:“In those days, there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”And the irony in Samson’s story is that he only does what is right once his eyes are removed.

Our children are growing up in strange times. We can see their potential — and we can see the cascade of distractions coming their way — and we wonder how best to respond.

Join Andy Lamberton LIVE at Regular Joes conference as he asks Anthony Bradley:

• What kind of world are our sons (in particular) growing up in?
• How should we pray for them?
• And how do we help them harness their strength?

Fathers Who Pray - Zechariah, “Praise be to the Lord”. S6E115 Jun 202500:05:21
“His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied: ‘Praise be to the Lord’” Luke 1:67-68a

Welcome to Fathers Who Pray, our 7-Day devotional to celebrate Father's Day, given out in churches across the UK and Ireland. Read by Rob Fraser-Binns, Stephen Mullan and Andy Lamberton. Receive an e-book format by visiting legacyfathers.org/fathersday

Billy Graham said, “A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.” Being a father is a humble, significant calling.

We keep company with seven father figures from the Bible this week, bringing our own families before God, as we too seek to become fathers who pray.
In this series, we will look at:
  1. Zechariah – “Praise be to the Lord”
  2. Manoah – “Teach us how”
  3. Jairus – “Come to my house”
  4. Unnamed Father – “Help my unbelief”
  5. David – “Give him a whole heart”
  6. Jacob – “Bless these boys”
  7. Paul – “Lord, be with him”
We hope you enjoy listening,

The Legacy Team

LIVE with David Smyth and Dawn McAvoy at Elmwood Presbyterian14 Feb 202500:54:32
When God the Son became flesh, it started not in Bethlehem but nine months before, in pregnancy. Joseph, as husband to Mary and an earthly father to Jesus, is a fascinating example. Providing, protecting, leading and loving his family through difficulties, cultural shame and death threats.

Our friends at Evangelical Alliance join us on the Legacy Podcast LIVE at Elmwood Presbyterian. From our changing society to the desire for wholesomeness amongst young people, from a fetus to the saviour of the world. We cover a lot of ground in this conversation on faith and fatherhood.

Evangelical Alliance and Both Lives have a new resource called God Unborn, which looks at the impact of Joseph on the story of the incarnation. Download a seven-day devotional - God Unborn - here. Also available for churches is a video resource you can play on a Sunday morning in March - 9 months before Christmas at the same link.

The Evangelical Alliance is a membership organisation of which we are a member - and you can be too! As a church, an organisation or an individual. Find out more on their website.

Both Lives is an initiative of Evangelical Alliance: a pro-women and pro-life movement – imagining a people and place that values the life and health of women and unborn children, and pursues the wellbeing of both. Find out more here.

And Legacy… that’s us! A ministry for fathers. We provide programmes for churches to help faith and fatherhood thrive. Find out more on our website. www.legacyfathers.org

“And he will turn the hearts of fathers” with Willie Patterson20 Dec 202300:45:54
We had one episode on failing as a father. But what about deep failure?

The last verses of the Old Testament, Malachi 4:5-6 says, “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”

Join us as we take a deep dive into this verse, and speak to a man with extensive experience in helping families who have experienced profound hurt turn towards each other, find healing and, where possible, restoration.

Today we are privileged to have Willie Patterson on the Legacy Podcast. Willie was the Assistant Director for 'Family and Child Care', and then took early retirement to set up Family Spectrum in 2004.

Raising Daughters Today. S2E326 Oct 202300:52:50
“To have a father who delights in knowing and loving them is one of the greatest blessings any girl can have.”

In the third and final ‘square-table’ conversation, Andy and Stephen are joined by Jonny McKane and Evan Reid, to talk about raising daughters today.

Reflection from Stephen:

We can sometimes fight against the reality that our daughters will one day become women and will leave home. As Andy says near the end of this episode: “I don’t want my daughter to change!”

Who relates? I know I want my one and half year old daughter to forever stay small, cute and slightly squidgy!

At the heart of this feeling is a mix of love and joy. Yet, what I learned in this conversation was that the loving, joyful relationship between a father and his daughter is foundational and formative in her journey to womanhood.

Of course, there is much we need to think about as we raise our girls (and we cover a lot in this episode), but never underestimate the place of joy.

To have a father who delights in knowing and loving them is one of the greatest blessings any girl can have.

In this conversation we talk about:
  • The joys of being a father to a daughter
  • How we can exasperate them
  • Hopes and fears as your daughter grows from girl to woman
  • How a father-daughter relationship changes over time
  • Journeying with the emotions of your daughter
  • Not being scared to speak
  • Cherishing her now while preparing her for the future
Two songs for fathers with Daughters
  1. Be kind to yourself - by Andrew Peterson
A song from a father to a teenage daughter.
We challenge any father to watch this video and have dry eyes at the end.
    V2
"I know it’s hard to hear it when the anger in your spirit is pointed like an arrow to your chest.
When the voices in your mind are anything but kind, and you can’t believe your father knows best.
I love you just the way that you are, I love the way He made your precious heart.
    Be kind to yourself"
  2. Banks - By NEEDTOBREATHE
A song about caring without controlling.
    Chorus:
"I want to hold you close, but never hold you back.
Like the banks of a river"
Raising Sons Today - Round Table. S2E202 Oct 202300:48:54
“Fatherhood is a journey punctuated by moments”. Paul Paynter says that on our podcast - so he does! The journey and the moments. As dads, we need to keep both in mind.

Co-Hosts Andy and Stephen are joined on the Legacy Podcast by David McGinty, David Penney, Paul Paynter, Paul Decock and a young man called Nathaniel to have a round table on Raising Sons Today.

Here’s our summary.

What we do over the long run will greatly influence our sons. They will notice our priorities. They will be shaped by the atmosphere we create. And they will, in large part, follow our model of masculinity.

But moments will also have a defining influence on our sons. Decisions around tech. Trips abroad. A conversation about girls late at night. How we mark key milestones is something intentional fathers think about. All of these moments have the potential of deeply shaping our sons’ lives. Moments, though, can be easily missed. In Jon Tyson’s Book - The Intentional Father he says: “So much of our lives is defined by moments. Moments of wonder, moments of heartache, moments of accomplishment, moments of regret. An intentional father is aware of the power of moments and works hard in advance to create life-changing ones.”

In this episode we cover both the journey and the moments. We hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did.

This is a wild ride and we talk about:
  • raising sons in the digital world
  • lies and honesty
  • dangers and duties
  • seizing moments
  • vision and intention
  • prioritising worship
  • loving your wife
  • influencing the atmosphere
  • the thousand-mile stare
  • working from home
  • what boys need
  • modelling faith
  • challenging boys
  • should I give my son a phone?
  • what’s the difference between raising a son or a daughter
  • words for a father whose son has rebelled

“At my first defence, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them. But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. … The Lord be with your spirit” 2 Timothy 4:16-17, 22

Billy Graham said, “A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.” Being a father is a humble, significant calling.

We keep company with seven father figures from the Bible this week, bringing our own families before God, as we too seek to become fathers who pray.

In this series, we will look at:
  1. Zechariah – “Praise be to the Lord”
  2. Manoah – “Teach us how”
  3. Jairus – “Come to my house”
  4. Unnamed Father – “Help my unbelief”
  5. David – “Give him a whole heart”
