A Mistake Hiring Volunteers?26 Apr 202300:33:39

Nonprofits often hire from within because it allows them to find people who already know the culture and work of the organization. While we think this can be a great option, there are some real red flags that need to be known before taking this step. The difference between nonprofit staff and volunteers can make it difficult for someone to transition between the two.

Ramp Up to Giving Month26 Sep 202200:32:00

Giving Tuesday is only eight weeks away, and Giving Month starts in a mere five weeks! How are your plans going?? We're Ted and Lisa Snyder, and between us have been nonprofit volunteers, leaders, staff, board members, and consultants. Last week we talked about the importance of annual planning for events, and with a big event around the corner, we are talking about how to build into and out-of an event with real life application. We want to see you have a wildly successful end to your 2022! Have a question for us about this? Email us at office@legacybuildersintl.com

Time to Plan 2023!19 Sep 202200:35:07

Are you waiting 'til January to plan for your 2023 events?? What if we told you this could be part of the reason you always feel like your running behind in terms of your nonprofit's growth? We're Ted and Lisa Snyder, and between us have been nonprofit volunteers, leaders, staff, board members, and consultants. Every event should build into the next one, and chances are your yearend giving is about to start ramping up. Know this, you need to know what the next event is so you can build into that - whether it's in January of next year or June. So how do we do this? Let's talk about it! Have a question for us about this? Email us at office@legacybuildersintl.com

We Fixed It!... Now What?12 Sep 202200:28:31

You've done it! The issue that has been staring you down day-in-and-day-out has given way. The pressure is releasing, and suddenly you have... space. time. confusion?? We're Ted and Lisa Snyder, and between us have been nonprofit volunteers, leaders, staff, board members, and consultants. One something starts working, the time is perfect to use the momentum to make the next change in a much easier way. But... what's the next right change? It might be surprising, but it's likely NOT the next stop around the flywheel. Let's talk about it! Have a question for us about this? Email us at office@legacybuildersintl.com

Are You Wrong About Your Donors??05 Sep 202200:23:57

What happens when you clearly understand who you are trying to help, and are COMPLETELY WRONG about who can help you help them? We're Ted and Lisa Snyder, and between us have been nonprofit volunteers, leaders, staff, board members, and consultants. Understanding who your key donors are and the ones your uniquely gifted to talk to (and how to talk with them!) will change how your organization is able to grow and make more of a difference. Let's talk about it! Have a question for us about this? Email us at office@legacybuildersintl.com

The Growth Rule of 3s and 10s29 Aug 202200:27:57

Of all the leadership principles that we've learned over and over again over the years, there is one that has transformed the work we do with nonprofits that we have only heard taught ONCE. We're Ted and Lisa Snyder, and between us have been nonprofit volunteers, leaders, staff, board members, and consultants. The rules we're talking about today is "The Rule of 3s and 10s". Whether you've been growing and you're starting to feel the wheels coming off or you're coming up to a new level of leadership, understanding this will give you valuable insight into what's going on behind-the-scenes as increasing numbers starts to put pressure on your systems and structures. Let's talk about it! Have a question for us about this? Email us at office@legacybuildersintl.com

Events: Big Piece or Big Pie22 Aug 202200:24:44

Events! If done correctly, these are the moments that will build and sustain your organization into the next 18 months. If done incorrectly, though, these can kill off your donors and your volunteerism We're Ted and Lisa Snyder, and between us have been nonprofit volunteers, leaders, staff, board members, and consultants. We have seen small events raise thousands and events with hundreds barely break even. We've seen free events make a huge impact for a nonprofit AND we've seen expensive galas make a huge impact for a nonprofit. The question about the success of the event is NOT "Was the event successful?". The question goes deeper than that, with an important focus on the upcoming weeks and months. Let's talk about it! Have a question for us about this? Email us at office@legacybuildersintl.com

Am I Graced for these Donors?15 Aug 202200:32:32

Every nonprofit we've come across is looking for a way to secure more donations and/or more donors. Maybe yours is different, but in case it's not... Have you ever considered which donors you're graced to reach and which ones might be actually pulling more out of your organization than the money they're putting in? We're Ted and Lisa Snyder, and between us have been nonprofit volunteers, leaders, staff, board members, and consultants. The people you are specifically graced to work with are the difference between an organization that feels like work and an organization that is working. This also applied to your donors! Today we're talking about identifying the donors that inherently "get you" so that your efforts have better impact in your fundraising. Have a question for us about this? Email us at office@legacybuildersintl.com

Do Good or Be Good12 Apr 202300:37:41

Being a nonprofit leader comes with many tough decisions when deciding what your organization and leaders should be doing. A strange choice has crept into charity work that assumes you can either be good or do good. This decision on how you choose to lead with impact every volunteer and donor who partners with your organization.

Danger! Vanity Metrics08 Aug 202200:32:11

Have you ever had a moment where someone asks what you're working on and everything in you wants to blurt out something impressive? Especially if you're feeling a little bit insecure? We've been there, and we get it. We're Ted and Lisa Snyder, and between us have been nonprofit volunteers, leaders, staff, board members, and consultants. The metric you want to blurt in that moment (and the underlying need to blurt) is a strong indicator that there's another metric that needs to be examined behind-the-scenes of your organization. But what is that metric? And how can we know if the metrics we are focused on are hurting or helping our organization? We're talking about that in this episode. Got more questions? Email us at office@legacybuildersintl.com

Transparency & the Streisand Effect01 Aug 202200:28:41

Transparency in organizations has always been important, and in an info-rich world with research able to be done by anyone in the world, it becomes even more so. We've seen over the years how organizations try to minimize issues thinking it'll be what looks best for the organization. However, the principles that guide these decisions were often born in an age prior to the internet being what it is today. So what does that mean for your organization? Let's talk about it! When's the last time you sat in your office and prayed someone would call with the exact skill/donation/time that you needed for a project that's going on? We're Ted and Lisa Snyder, nonprofit consultants who want to see your organization grow. Knowing how to ask people around you for specific help in a way that doesn't deteriorate the relationship you've spent time building

When Empathy Takes Over and You Help No One27 Jun 202200:33:24

Empathy is a super important skill when you're a leader, but can easily become a hurdle to leadership when it takes over. Whether it's with your staff or with one of the clients you're trying to help, it's important to recognize when empathy is important and at what point it stops being helpful in your leadership and decision making.

When to CHANGE Your Vision20 Jun 202200:26:14

Believe it or not, vision statements and organizational visions in general do need to change sometimes. They're one of the first things you have to tell everyone, but it's also one of the most VITAL pieces of your ability to communicate what it is that you're doing. Your ability to communicate that is directly related to the resources you will have. Let's have a discussion about whether or not your vision needs a checkup, or even a change up.
