The Pug is in the Toy group, with the Maltese and Havanese which I've already Learned, Don't Returned, and the Chinese Crested. If you're interested in a Learn, Don't Return of the Chinese Crested or any dog breed, leave it in the comments! Near the end of this Learn, Don't Return, I'll put a link up here for the Maltese and the Havanese - they are small but interesting dog breeds!

The Pug originates from Chinese emperors during the Warring States Period which was 400 BC. And while property of the emperors during this violent period Pugs had their own guards to protect them, when they were known as the Foo Dog, which means happy or prosperity in Mandarin. Follow Me Now: The Dutch have been building ships since prehistoric times, and they really hit their stride when they built ships for the Dutch East India Trading Company- the first multinational trading company, which started on March 20th, 1602.

And I'm sure it's no coincidence that in that same century, the first Pugs entered Europe, courtesy of the Dutch traders. The Pug was probably traded to England royalty from Dutch traders near the end of the 17th century; and this Pug entered America also during violent times - sometime around the Civil War in 1861 to 1865 or possibly a little after. The Pug dog breed gets their name from 3 possible sources. I'll give you the options and you can decide, then I'll give you my opinion at the end too, and we'll see if we agree, sound good? Option 1: The Marmoset monkey, which apparently was a popular pet during the 18th century, went by "pug monkey"  and if I'm being honest, I get it, their faces could be considered similar looking; but I'm just not 100% on-board.

Option 2: According to the Oxford Dictionary - Pug means "a dog of a dwarf breed like a bulldog with a broad flat nose and deeply wrinkled face". I know what your thinking because I thought the same thing; so what do they call the Pug in England? Right?! Well, in England they call the Pug the Dutch Mastiff! Very interesting! I like the sounds of this one, but let's check out the 3rd option! Option 3: "Pugge" was a term of endearment, like "my cute little Pugge" and it was shortened to Pug. I know around here, in my home, everything ends with "e" to show love, and we do love our dogs, but this is in reverse, from Pugge to Pug, so I'm not 100% positive. So, what do you think? I'm going with all 3 because it sounds like the term Pug was a popular term in the 16th and 17th centuries, it's probably a combination of all 3.  It started as 1 thing and morphed into additional meanings. Would your wife or husband love it if you called them - your pug? comment below. The Pug's eyes will not pop out, and your eyes won't pop out over their veterinarian bills, but consider getting pet health insurance. The Pug is only 10-13 inches tall and in 2023 the Pug ranks 36th in dog breed popularity. The Pug has a wonderful personality that is loving, charming, and mischievous, but a Pug pet parent shouldn't be mischievous and consider adopting an older Pug since Pugs can live to be 13-15 years old. Pugs have a little bit of a protective instinct because we know Napoleon Bonaparte was bit by Josephine's dog, Fortune. https://www.petzpaws.com/ The Vizsla dog breed is in the sporting group with the more popular dog breeds, the #2 ranking Labrador Retriever - which we've already Learned, Don't Returned - the #3 ranking Golden Retriever, and the # 10 Ranking German Shorthaired Pointer.  I know what you are thinking.  Brian where does the Vizsla rank? Slow down, we'll get there, 1st I need to tell you why I think the Vizsla should be ranking higher, so hear me out.  In the Hungarian language, Vizsla means pointer, so they don't call the Vizsla, the "Vizsla" in Hungary because it's not specific enough.  After all, while the Vizsla is popular in Hungary, hunters also use other "pointer" types of dogs, like the German Shorthaired Pointer.  And the reason they call the Vizsla the Magyar Vizsla is that the Magyar is the name of the Tribesmen who developed the Vizsla dog breed in the late 9th century.

In Hungary, the term Magyar isn't just the name of the tribe, it also means the Hungarians themselves and the language they speak, and represents Hungarian culture and identity.  So, it's quite an honor for the Vizala to be called the Magyar Vizsla, it's part of their very civilization!  In the 14th century, the Vizsla's hunting abilities caught the eye of the Hungarian nobles and of course, they started using the Vizsla as their preferred hunting dog, but they also developed the Vizsla as a family dog.  But, the family dogs population took a hard hit during the Hungarian Civil War, which occurred after WW1. Whenever there is a war just surviving is challenging, so naturally a dog is secondary, but the Vizsla were some valued dogs, and the breeders barely brought them back - rumor has it that there were around 12 remainings.  And as if that wasn't enough WW2 started in 1939 and basically wiped out the Vizsla dog breed again!  Thankfully the Vizsla was popular in the region and collectively the breed could be restored.

Like the Vizsla is both a hunter and a family dog, with the Vizsla dog bred you also get a pointer and retriever in 1 dog! The Vizsla has a smooth coat which is called "golden-rust", which makes sense because like gold, the Vizsla looks like an expertly crafted dog that is just tasteful and elegant enough...and the coat even sparkles like gold!   At only 44 to 60 pounds the Vizsla, like a fine piece of classy jewelry, only brings what's necessary to get the job done.  And with the Vizsla getting the job done means covering grassy fields energetically and smartly to flush out their prey, which are pheasants, rabbits, geese, and ducks.  And the Vizsla will have you quacking like a duck, to all your friends over the Vizsla's abilities.  Including the Vizsla's ability to switch from a hunting dog to a companion dog that loves to cuddle with you.  The Vizsla has a height of 21 to 24 inches so brush the smooth-coated Vizsla once a week, which will produce some hairs since they do lightly shed.  But you only need to wash the Vizsla when they get dirty or smelly, which is once a month or even less.

The Vizsla is an energetic and lovable family dog for an active family that exercises regularly and frequently, we're talking a minimum of 1 hour per day, every single day, and since the Vizsla can live to be 12-14 years old, that's how long you'll need to keep up your exercise training.  For mental training the Vizsla needs 1 hour of AKC 1)obedience, 2)agility, 3)tracking, 4) or field trial competitions, to name a few.  So the Vizsla is not for everyone, keep in mind the channel you're watching is Learn, Don't Return because we don't want you returning a Vizsla.  And commit to feeding high-quality pet food from a 2-quart bowl.  The Vizsla is a social butterfly that's great around young children and good around other dogs.  But the boy Vizslas can be assertive, bullheaded, and even combative, so make sure you communicate your desired drive level and temperament while searching Vizsla breeders or rescues. 

https://www.petzpaws.com/ The Dogue de Bordeaux is in the AKC Working Group with the Rottweiler, Boerboel, and the Siberian Husky.  We've already Learned, Don't Returned the Boerboel and the Siberian Husky, near the end of this video I'll put a link up here.  The Dogue de Bordeaux is a huge dog breed with the head to match.  The Dogue de Bordeaux originates either from the monstrous Molossus dog breed that itself comes from the Assyrian empire in Mesopotamia from 900 to 600 BC or from a Spanish Mastiff called Alano - which was no slouch in the strength department either.  Do you think the Dogue de Bordeaux came from the monstrous Molossus or the Spanish Alaon dog breed - leave your answer in the comments.  The one thing we do know is that the Dogue de Bordeaux originates from the Bordeaux region of France...because it's in his name - kinda gave it away.  But in the 14th century, France had 3 unique mastiffs from different regions  - all called Doguin d'Aquitane.  Not so easy now, is it?During World War 2 the Dogue de Bordeaux almost went extinct!  The Dogue de Bordeaux which also goes by DDB or French Mastiff was revived by Dr. Raymond Triquet, who in the 1960s, fell in love with the Dogue de Bordeaux and vowed to revive the breed.  And with most big projects, his work started out as a simple love affair, but he and the Dogue de Bordeaux got their big break when one of my favorite movies hit the big screen in 1989.  Turner and Hooch starred Tom Hanks and Hooch, his Dogue de Bordeaux.  Turner and Hooch was an early movie in Tom Hanks career, but still was a box office hit and raked in $180 million in today's dollars.  Heck, the movie was so popular that it had a 2021 sequel TV show to the 1989 film also featuring a Dogue de Bordeaux.  In totality, these events reversed the Dogue de Bordeaux's direction - from being virtually unknown to a popularity ranking of 84 according to the AKC.The "Dogue de Bordeaux" first came into existence at the Paris exhibition in 1863 and 33 years later - standardizing the Dogue de Bordeaux was finished in 1896.  The Dogue in Dogue de Bordeaux means "Mastiff" in French, and Bordeaux is the French region's name, but you may recognize the Bordeaux name because it's a type of fine wine also from the Bordeaux region of France.  The Dogue de Bordeaux head is called brachycephalic, which means they have a short muzzle and a round head. The Dogue de Bordeaux coat comes in red, like the wine produced in Bordeaux France; but Bordeaux also produces white wines.  If your Dogue de Bordeaux has white patches on the forechest, on the throat, or on its toes, it's allowed, but not preferred, otherwise, it's a disqualification.  And the Dogue de Bordeaux gait is free and rich, otherwise, it's a disqualification; you'll get disqualified if you have too much Bordeaux wine which causes you to lose your temper.  But the Dogue de Bordeaux should not lose its temper - while still being alert.You like a big bottle of Bordeaux, I get it!  The Dogue de Bordeaux likes a big bowl of quality pet food from a floating 3-quart bowl.  The  Dogue de Bordeaux is known for drooling, so here at Learn, Don't Return - we tell it like it is because we don't want you returning a   Dogue de Bordeaux - so you will need to carry a towel to clean their mouth.  And don't forget to clean their dog food containers, obviously.  The big  Dogue de Bordeaux can weigh 100 to 110 pounds or even more, they have a height of 23 to 27 inches.  And unfortunately they only live to be 5 to 8 years old.  The fawn or red coat  Dogue de Bordeaux does shed, but like Bordeaux wine, they're smooth - sorry I just had to do one more.  The Dogue de Bordeaux was recognized by the AKC only in 2008 and the Dogue de Bordeaux Society of America (ddbsa.org) was formed in 1997.  Now are you looking for a guard dog to protect your fine Bordeaux wine?  Leave your thoughts in the comments.

https://www.petzpaws.com/ The Beagle didn't originate from America or England?  Nope.  Around 400 BC the Greeks used the Beagle to hunt hares and rabbits and the Beagle still hunts hares and rabbits today.  We are not sure if the Greeks used the Beagle to hunt rabbits in packs or individually.  But from the mid-1700s to today, most huntsmen use the Beagle to hunt in packs.  Since the Greeks to today humans have followed the Beagle on foot, and the Beagle follows its nose and ears, which hold the scent, to locate its prey.  For your information: a snowshoe hare is different from a cottontail rabbit - a hare is larger, lives in pairs, and lives above ground.  While a cotton-tail rabbit is smaller, lives in packs of 20, and lives underground in a "warren" - these are the little guys eating your carrots; nevertheless, the energetic and intelligent Beagle can also be trained to hunt any small game, and even bear, foxes, wild boar, bobcats, and deer, which is one of the reasons why the Beagle is prized in its different sizes.

The Beagle is not a big dog, but some Beagles are bigger than others, and each size can have an inherent advantage or disadvantage depending our your choice of prey or terrain of your AKC field trial competitions  For example, if you hunt snowshoe hares you may want a smaller lighter Beagle who won't sink into the snow, or maybe you want a taller Beagle that may drop into the snow, but won't get stuck. Or maybe you hunt in dense brush where a taller, heavier Beagle will have an advantage in plowing through vegetation or maybe you want a small Beagle in dense trees where undergrowth isn't an issue.  My point is the size of the Beagle a huntsman chooses very much depends on the topography, climate, and terrain of their specific hunting area, so hunting the same area, or areas with the same conditions will have similar results, otherwise, it could be a challenge.  The AKC groups the Beagles into 2 categories, and those 2 categories are...

The short Beagles are 13" at the withers and the tall Beagles are 15" inches at the withers - the wither is the highest point between the front legs and technically is the vertebrae.  And the highest point the Beagle was in popularity was in 1953-1959 at number 1.  In fact, the Beagle has never been lower than 10th place in terms of popularity since the AKC began tracking dog breed registrations in 1884, and today they rank 8th.  Think about it, Beagles hunt in packs so having 1 beagle isn't really an option for a hunter, which contributed to an explosion of them.  But what contributed to the explosion of Beagles in the 1950s?  Snoopy!  And while we think of Snoopy as the all-American dog, the Beagles name originates from the France "begueule" which means "gaped throat", and the quirky Beagle is gape throated - which means to be open-mouthed in the context of the Beagle it means they bark.  And the Beagle can be very vocal, to the point of wanting to return them back to the breeder, which is why I'm creating Learn, Don't Return videos for you, so you don't do that. The Beagle has 3 barks that represent different scenarios...

number 1: a normal barking sound, number 2 a yodel, and number 3 a howl.  Funny quick story: a friend of mine lived near a Beagle and the dog barked for hours constantly.  And the Beagle is known for their barking which makes them a bad apartment dog.  The Beagle is also known for eating a lot of dog food so buy high-quality pet food that won't add to the Beagles recommended weight of 20-24 pounds, when they're not burning calories in the field.  Keep your Beagle healthy by cleaning your dog food storage containers, and don't overfill their 1-quart food bowls, bathing the Beagle every 6 weeks, cleaning the floppy ears, and trimming the nails, and your Beagle or Beagles could live a healthy life and live to be 15 years old!

The Maltese dog breed is in the Toy Group with the Havanese, Pomeranian, and Chihuahua - all of those dog breeds we've already Learned, Don't Returned - near the end of this video, I'll leave links up here for you.  The Maltese gets its name from the 3 island which make up Malta.  But where the heck is Malta?  Italy is shaped like a boot that is kicking a rock, which is Sicily.  Well, Malta is in the Mediterranean 5 1/2 hours by ferry ride from Sicily or 160 miles from Sicily, but it's not too far from Libya either; so the little island has seen a lot of history from the Tunisians to the Romans, and now has 530,000 residents, also called Maltese - so NO wiggle room on where the Maltese dog breed originates, but like island of Malta has had many conqureres, the Maltese dog breed has has many names like the Maltese Lion Dog, the Spaniel Gentle, the Comforter, Bichon, Melitaie Dog, Shock Dog, Ye Ancient Dogge of Malta, Maltese Terrier, and Roman Ladies Dog - did you happen to recognize the British, Roman and Italian and Spanish influenced names?  But Malta became an independent country in 1964 so the simple "Maltese" name should stick for a while.

And the Maltese dog breed can stick on you too, like in your arms, in your bosoms which apparently was or is a popular spot, or sitting on your lap.  We know what the Maltese are good for, and it's really simple and affectionate they were created to cheer up the ladies while their men were away.  And they can cheer you up for a long time since they can live between 12 and 15 years.  The little Maltese half-pints only weigh 7 pounds so buy small amounts of dog food so the food doesn't have time to spoil and clean your food containers after each bag.  The Maltese dog breed is short dogs too, they have a height of only 7 to 9 inches, and if you have kids from a baby to 7 or 9 years old the Maltese is perfectly affectionate toward all family members.  Although the Maltese is a small and sturdy, make sure the little Maltese is safe from bigger dominant dogs and aggressive big kids.  The Maltese dog breed is low maintenance and low cost - they only feed from a 1/2 pint bowl available at petzpaws.com and they don't drool either.  And while they have hair - they don't have fur - their hair is hypoallergenic and doesn't shed, but their long and silky smooth hair does require grooming every day or two to prevent matting; and you will need to bathe, and trim the Maltese every month.
