Creating a community26 Jan 202400:17:52
In this podcast, Sarah Hamilton-Gill FCIPD explores the pivotal role of community in the life of an HR Consultant. Navigating the consultancy landscape can sometimes feel isolating, but we firmly believe that a strong community is the antidote. Whether you're seeking camaraderie or considering establishing your network, we've delved into various community-building avenues for HR professionals and consistently found Facebook to be the most effective platform for fostering connections.

In each of our programmes, including our Leap into HR Consulting virtual Bootcamp, we create dedicated Facebook pages for participants to share their experiences, exchange insights, and receive daily updates. This virtual space serves not only as a hub for key messages during their journey with us but also as a secure environment for asking questions and receiving essential information.

Join Sarah in this podcast episode as she unveils two key strategies to cultivate thriving communities within your consulting business. While there are alternative methods, whether virtual or face-to-face, building these communities is crucial for your personal and professional growth.

However, creating a group or page is just the beginning; sustaining an engaged community requires consistent effort. Sarah discusses the significance of providing valuable content, investing time, fostering engagement through discussions, and maintaining a safe space for communication.

Podcasts can be a powerful tool to connect with your community. They also serve as a gateway to expanding your brand voice, as guests bring their communities into the fold, introducing new audiences to your insights and perspectives.

When Family Matters08 Dec 202300:17:38
In this podcast episode, Sarah is joined by Kelly Venkiah, the Founder and Lead Consultant at Venkiah HR, who participated in Sarah's Bootcamp in May 2023.

Kelly's professional background includes 18 years in the corporate realm at Amazon, where she held various roles in both general and specialised capacities, eventually leading to international assignments. In 2020, she embarked on the journey of starting a family, welcoming her first son, followed by a second in 2022. During her maternity leave, Kelly made the pivotal decision to transition into HR consulting, a career move that had been on her radar and now felt opportune given her evolving family dynamics.

For Kelly, the appeal of HR consulting, like many working parents, lies in the flexibility it offers. Managing the health challenges of her youngest son, Miles, who requires extended hospital stays, Kelly finds solace in the ability to work from any location as needed.

Initiating one's consultancy presents inherent challenges; self-belief is crucial, and imposter syndrome may emerge. Kelly highlights the importance of creating a sound business strategy and avoiding overcommitting to ensure success.

The Bootcamp experience has been a lifeline for Kelly, providing a supportive community from both fellow participants and the Leap into team.

Kelly's advice to podcast listeners contemplating a career shift into HR consulting is straightforward – envision the life you desire. Consider your aspirations not only in the present and financially but also project where you want to be in 5-10 years and then reverse engineer your path to get there.

Mind Your Business: Navigating Mental Health as an Entrepreneur24 Nov 202300:43:19
Let's delve into the realm of mental health today! In our discussion, we'll explore the prevalent challenges surrounding mental well-being, offering practical strategies for navigating and fostering mental health, particularly within a professional context.

Recognising mental health as a cornerstone of overall well-being is paramount, especially for business owners. Its impact extends to decision-making, creativity, and relationships with both employees and clients. The rigors of work challenges, stress, and long hours can adversely affect mental health, both professionally and personally. Creating a supportive environment is crucial. As a business owner, empathy plays a vital role, given that clients and collaborators may also require support.

Joining Sarah today are Natalie Ellis, the award-winning founder of Rebox HR, and Matt Young, from Who Needs Instructions, also known as 'The Journalling Guy'.

Natalie Ellis, who established Rebox HR in 2020, shares her journey of success and the importance of shedding the metaphorical mask that business owners often wear. While accolades were attributed to the business, recognising and celebrating personal achievements is equally vital.
Having started her business after experiencing burnout in her corporate role, Natalie emphasises the significance of acknowledging signs of mental health challenges and seeking help.

Her book, 'Launch Your HR Career,' is available on her website, with a second book due for release next February.

Our second guest, Matt Young, of Who Needs Instructions, a not for profit business, and The Journalling Guy focuses on men's mental health, and shares the alarming statistic that 75% of suicide rates are men over 50, often due to suppressed feelings. Matt's initiatives include free events, walks, night hikes, breakfast meetups, and a supportive WhatsApp community, creating a safe space for men to openly discuss their thoughts and feelings.

'The Journalling Guy' is an online course, promoting the transformative power of journaling, both online and in-person in Devon.
Matt now runs The Journalling Guy online course, and locally in person in Devon.

Corfu Retreat - Strategies and Sunsets10 Nov 202300:19:13
In this episode, Sarah Hamilton-Gill is joined by Nikki Masterman, MD and Founder of Inspired HR Ltd in the UK, and Tracey Corea, Founder and Principal Consultant of Robertson HR in the USA, who both attended our Corfu Retreat in September 2023.

Their initial expectations of the retreat were somewhat different from the profound experiences they ultimately encountered. Nikki embarked on her consultancy journey eight years ago, experiencing rapid growth, bringing with it long hours, along with the challenges brought about by working in HR throughout the pandemic.

This journey left her on the brink of burnout. In contrast, Tracey is at the beginning of her entrepreneurial voyage, with her business just one year old, eagerly seeking opportunities to learn and collaborate. Nikki arrived at the retreat armed with an extensive to-do list and lofty aspirations. Did she accomplish everything on her list? No, but what she gained was immeasurable.

In this episode, Nikki reveals that she's typically a very private person who avoids vulnerability. However, the nurturing and supportive environment of the retreat allowed her to let down her guard. Both Tracey and Nikki share common words when discussing their retreat experiences: rejuvenation, refocusing, relaxation, motivation, reenergizing, creativity, and reflection. These words encapsulate the essence of what we all sometimes require – a pause to contemplate, reassess our goals, and subsequently regain focus on our path forward.

If you are listening to this and thinking about taking the leap into HR consulting, but not sure if it’s for you, we have a great way for you to find out, and it will only cost you £25 (plus vat). Launching your consultancy as a partnership?22 Sep 202300:29:48
Today our guest is Ryan Chandra, HR Consultant and Co-Founder, PeopleWise Solutions, based in Canada.

Ryan shares with us why he chose to leave the corporate world, and the difference it has made. Being an active dad, and involved parent, he wanted to be more present for things like the school pick up and drop offs, and attend other school functions.

He also talks about being a millennial, and that he hasn’t been in any one role for more than 5 years. He wanted to take on the work that he really enjoyed doing, and likes the variety that it in turn brings.

Having decided to leave the corporate world, Ryan decided to go into a partnership with Ram, who he had known for over 12 years. With a differing skill set, Ram brings the strategic and leadership development side to the business, whereas Ryan is more transactional. He believes that this in turn means they can bring to the table a wide range of services to their clients.

Ethics and values for business owners is paramount, and growing, learning and acknowledging is essential. This is something that sits at the core of PeopleWise Solutions, and as their brand is based on them and their personality, values is everything.

Helping your clients solve the challenges of hybrid working14 Jul 202300:23:36
Recently Sarah and Kim visited London and attended the CIPD Festival of Work at Olympia in London.

In this podcast Sarah reflects on some of the key topics discussed, being the value of networking, collaborations and hybrid working. We may recognise that networking has many benefits, whether that’s online or face to face and is an essential element for consultants as well as inhouse professionals.

It may be that you connect with a potential new client, or an opportunity to collaborate presents itself. That’s exactly what happened to Sarah at the Festival of Work. Whilst snatching a quick break from the busy stand, she met Graham, who was enjoying a much-needed coffee and downtime.

Sarah soon discovered that Graham Joyce was the co-founder of a great cloud-based product called DuoMe. So, our lunchbreaks soon became an interesting discussion about our businesses.

DuoMe, was in the first stage of development in March 2020, when the pandemic hit. It solves many hybrid working challenges by improving hybrid working, enhancing flexible working, managing hybrid work styles, and optimising office space.

Listen to this podcast to find out more and how it could fit into either your consulting portfolio or solve one of your key challenges facing your business right now.

This week Sarah is talking all about procrastination!

Sarah speaks to many consultants and business owners who are talking about doing things but just “don’t get round to it” and this is something that she wanted to explore further.

Why do we put things off?

Do you have things on your list or mind that you have been putting off – or in Greece we often joke about “Avrio” – when someone says this it means tomorrow and you know that it probably won’t be !?

Do you know what procrastination means? Sarah delves into more detail about this, and where it came from.

What does it mean to you? Sarah looks at what causes us to procrastinate and shares her top tips on how to deal with them.

How does this all impact you as an HR Consultant? Be aware, and mindful; Sarah has some great questions for you, to help you move forward and take action.

Sarah talks further about Brian Tracy’s book ‘Eat that Frog’ and how it helped when she read it over 8 years ago.

How one HR consultant is literally changing lives24 Mar 202300:26:29
In this episode Sarah is joined by Jennifer Opare-Ayree. Jennifer went through her virtual HR consulting bootcamp in March 2022.

Everything that has happened to Jennifer, has brought her to where she is now, with her own consulting business, and her charity the Mary Sowah Foundation, set up in honour of her grandma, who passed away in late 2017.

Jennifer, brought up by her grandma, came to the UK at aged 15, to be with her father and siblings. Her grandma sold everything she owned, to give her an education. She shares how when her grandma was growing up, it was a time when many didn’t’ believe that girls should be educated, but she used to sneak into the back of a school classroom to learn, until the teacher discovered her.

This inspiring story demonstrates how a strong why can drive you to achieve great things and how this manifests into your business.

Automation is the key to scaling your business - here's how10 Mar 202300:23:09
In this episode with Sarah Hamilton-Gill FCIPD it’s all about automation for consulting startups and scale ups.

By automating as much as you can within your consultancy, right from the very start, you can free up time to enable you to be as effective as possible.

There are two key areas that automation can make a huge difference, being:
  1. Business operations – eg sales cycles, finance
  2. Client services and products
Sarah goes into further detail on why automation is so important, the different ways that it can be used, and why it’s essential to get these sorts of systems in place as early on in your business as possible.

Something which is all over the media now is Chat GPT. Sarah recently attended a three day course to find out what it can do, and it does so much more than writes content, or acts as another google. She will be running a webinar soon about this.

Onwards and Upwards to 202316 Dec 202200:08:21
2022 has literally flown by, and as we approach 2023, Sarah Hamilton-Gill reflects on the year gone by and looking forward.

Being a business owner is like a rollercoaster. Things go well, but sometimes things don’t go as you had planned, or wanted them to go.

Sarah refers back to 2014, when actress Gwyneth Paltrow and her husband musician Chris Martin announced they were separating. The phrase which was used a lot at that time, and now is ‘conscious uncoupling’.

Relationships, whether they are personal or business related can break down. This could be due to communication issues, a breach or trust, or other reasons.

At this time of year, it’s important to self-reflect. Are there clients where the relationship is difficult?

Is it time for retainer contracts to be renewed? Whatever the hardships though, spend time looking at the successes too, not just things that went wrong.

What are your key learnings from 2023? Why not share them as a LinkedIn post? Sarah shares her pointers on the above with you in this podcast.

Scaling up your business - even in a recession02 Dec 202200:21:26
In this podcast episode, Sarah Hamilton-Gill talks about keys to scaling up your business. Even in the midst of financial difficulties globally, there are still opportunities.

When coaching Sarah often hears about consultants’ desires to scale up and grow their business. Again a key question is ‘why do you want to do this?’ Often, it’s because they want to sell their business in the future. Do you have a 5 or 10 year or long-term plan? Pay attention to the detail and be clear! Sarah discusses further how her business helps scale ups by her Mastermind group programme and 1:1 coaching.

How can you scale up? Sarah gives you some key pointers on this.
How adaptable and flexible is your business? Do you have automations?

Sarah Hamilton-Gill is joined by Nicola Marshman of NMBR Consulting Ltd. Nicola specialises in the other side of finance, rather than the day to day, looking at strategic finance, helping business owners view what their business will look like in the future, so they know how to look forward and plan in terms of cash and so much more.

Before the covid lockdown, Nicola was working in Singapore with large corporates, but wanted to work with smaller companies. She wanted to move back to the UK and set up her own business. This was challenging as this was through covid, but she finds it extremely rewarding working with small businesses, seeing the impact she can make to them.

Nicola is also part of the CFO centre, offering support to early-stage larger businesses.

Is there funding out there for start-ups? Yes, there is. Nicola discusses this further with Sarah, and also gives some great top tips.

Nicola will be joining Sarah on a future webinar to discuss the above, and much more further.

In this episode Sarah Hamilton-Gill FCIPD talks more about how to address your client’s pain points, and those of your ideal clients.

If you have Sarah’s No. 1 selling Amazon business book ‘Leap into HR consulting: How to move successfully from corporate to consulting’, and flip to page 153 there’s a great section about client pain points, together with a set of questions which will help you to look at these in greater detail. If not, there are more details in the notes.

Sarah is joined by Emma-Jo of the Induction App, who she has partnered with for the UK launch of the app.

The app, which is HR specialist software for onboarding and induction, is a great addition to any HR consultant’s portfolio, as it adds value to your clients. Did you know for example that 26% of businesses feel prepared for new starters and inductions, as opposed to 88% of new employees stating they didn’t have a positive experience with their induction.

Using great digital tech, and giving your new people a good experience from the start, really does make a huge difference, not just for retention of staff, but also regarding employee satisfaction. It can also play an essential role if compliance is high on your client’s priorities too.

To arrange for a demo, or to attend a future webinar about the Induction App please get in touch.

Creating a money mindset to maximise your business revenue04 Nov 202200:21:45
In this podcast we talk about mindset, and in particular mindset around money. If you have Sarah Hamilton-Gill’s book “Leap into HR Consulting: How to move successfully from corporate to HR consulting” there is more information on page 161/162, which goes into greater detail about beliefs about money.

Today we are joined by Roneish Myers of MoneyHeave. Roneish shares with us her approach to all things finance and talks more about our relationships with money.

Roneish started off in the corporate financial world, but felt there was something missing. Until she started her business MoneyHeave, she never realised there was such a need for financial knowledge and clarity, by so many people. In fact 1 in 3 people in the UK are financially illiterate. There are no topics covering this currently in the school curriculum.

Roneish believes that when you know and understand your worth, especially in a business environment, then you will charge what you are worth too.

You can find out more about this on our recorded webinar with Roneish which includes a couple of special offers too! Watch here: https://bit.ly/WebRoneish

To Be or To Do? THAT is the question23 Sep 202200:13:21
To do or to be? That is the question! It’s the first question that Sarah Hamilton-Gill asks you on this podcast. This episode is a reflective one, and recorded after the Corfu Luxury Female Entrepreneurs’ Retreat in mid-September.

Often as business owners we write to do lists, but what about a to be list? Just being, is very empowering, and something that none of us do enough of. But what actually does it mean? Sarah explains more in this podcast. A lot of it relates to self-care, looking after ourselves, being energised, gaining clarity, planning and strategising.

To be the best that we can be inside and outside of our businesses, we need to first be the best that we can be ourselves. Time out, sleep and activities that make you joyful or happy, are all essential. Find out about Sarah’s tree hugging exploits as well, and how something so simple can have such an effect on you too!”

Staying motivated as a busy autumn approaches02 Sep 202200:11:09
In this episode, Sarah talks about keeping motivated as we head towards autumn with all the challenges that we face.

While it can be hard to stay positive, now is exactly the time when you need to focus and push ahead with your consulting business. September to December is one of the busiest periods for HR consultants and what you do today will take several months to be realised, so it's important to take action now to top up your pipeline as 2023 approaches.

Clarity around your goals for the coming months is paramount. Knowing who your potential clients are and using your LinkedIn to arrange virtual coffees with them is key. Having your communications and processes in place is essential.

Motivation can be boosted by being part of a group or tribe and Leap into HR Consulting has a Facebook group, webinars, and much more to help you benefit from a community of like-minded HR consultants.

Sarah also shares her own experience with building and running a business through tough times and reveals a new mastermind programme to help you navigate the next 12 months with Sarah by your side. Her in-depth knowledge of the consulting world and the support of her team can be yours for a founding offer of just £97+vat per month. Keep an eye on Sarah's social media for more details of the programme, which launches w/c 5th September 2022.

From independent HR consultant to business owner19 Aug 202200:22:47
Today Sarah Hamilton-Gill FCIPD is re-joined by Julia Crawford, MD of People Pillar. Julia was a podcast guest in Episode 10, talking about credibility and starting out. Just 12 months later Julia is running a very successful HR consulting business.

In this episode Julia and Sarah speak more about growing businesses, working with associates and taking on her first member of staff. They also discuss what comes with growing a business, and the journey from being an independent HR consultant, to becoming a business owner. They also discuss one of the things that many consultants find difficult, sales. Julia’s tip on this? Don’t think of it as sales or trying to sell your service, think about it as being curious about someone else’s business, and always look for those opportunities, which often come in the most unlikely places.

Find out what’s next for Julia and her business too!

In this episode of our podcast Sarah Hamilton-Gill FCIPD talks more about relationships and self-care.

This podcast was recorded at the same time as the Queen, and indeed the whole country, celebrated her 70th anniversary on the throne. We are sure that some days she doesn’t feel like working either, but she keeps going.

Is it our duty to serve our community and ourselves? Do we get the balance right? If not, what can we do about it?

Sarah discusses this and much more, including some great tips and tricks on how to make time not just for your business, but also for you!”
