Human beings are born to connect―but in today’s increasingly polarized world, we’re losing sight of the importance of building and maintaining professional relationships. And that’s bad for business. In Bridge the Gap, two prominent Fortune 500 coaches explore how your biology and biography define and refine your behavior in relationships where you struggle to connect. Focusing on personal responsibility and awareness, meta-cognition, and curiosity, they provide a reliable and replicable framework to enhance open communication. And they illuminate the inner workings of the human brain and mind, and how they impact the way you connect, communicate, and collaborate. Adrian Gostick and Chester Elton have spent more than two decades helping clients around the world engage their employees on strategy, vision and values. They provide real solutions for leaders looking to manage change, drive innovation and build high performance cultures and teams. Their work is supported by research with more than a million working adults across the globe. So, what can a family do to develop and strengthen a culture that will support their deepest goals and values? Mitzi Perdue draws on the experience of her family of origin, the Henderson Estate Company which dates back to 1840 and was the forerunner of the Sheraton Hotels (her father was co-founder of the chain). She also looks to her marital family (she’s the widow of Frank Perdue from Perdue Farms) that began in 1920. Mitzi’s talks contain practical tips for embedding a positive culture. She’s been a part of carrying out all of them, and in some cases, creating them. These are tips that work, they’re practical, and they can make a spectacular difference in whether the family continues across the generations, or becomes one of the 70% that fails to pass on their legacy to the next generation. Mitzi is a businesswoman, author, and a master story teller. She holds degrees from Harvard University and George Washington University, is a past president of the 40,000 member American Agri-Women and was one of the U.S. Delegates to the United Nations Conference on Women in Nairobi. She currently writes for the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents and hosts EarthX TV’s show, The Pen and the Planet. Most recently, she’s authored Tough Man, Tender Chicken: Business and Life Lessons from Frank Perdue. The book made #5 on Amazon’s Business Biographies, out of a field of 20,000. She’s also the author of, I Didn’t Bargain for This, her story of growing up as a hotel heiress. If you would like to join Chester's Gratitude Community, we Invite you to join 44K subscribers to "The Gratitude Journal" published monthly. “One of the greatest joys people get out of life is learning things and then putting that new knowledge into practice,” he says. “The learning environment, as we have developed it at the WD-40 Company, creates a feeling of safety because it takes out the element of fear.” At WD-40 Company, tribe members don’t make mistakes. They have “learning moments,” which Garry defines as experiences – both negative and positive – that they can then safely report back to their colleagues. “I was particularly struck by [the Dalai Lama’s] line, ‘The purpose of life is to make people happy. If you can’t make them happy, at least don’t hurt them’,” Garry says. He also admires Aristotle’s maxim, “Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work.” “As leaders, our job is to make sure we create an environment where tribe members wake up each day looking forward to going to work, feel safe while they are there, [and] return home at the end of the day fulfilled by the work they do, feeling like they’ve learned something new and contributed to something bigger than themselves,” he says. | Episode 7 - Real Happiness and being Awestruck with Jonah Paquette | 10 Nov 2020 | 00:32:10 | |
Jonah Paquette - Mental Health Training. Clinical Psychologist, and author of "Real Happiness: Proven Paths for Contentment, Peace and Well-Being," and "The Happiness Toolbox." 3rd book, “Awestruck,” will be released in 2020, and will focus on the science of awe and wonder Jonah was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, where he lived until my early twenties. With much of his family remaining there, and growing up a die-hard Knicks and Yankees fan, it was difficult leaving the Big Apple. But like many people, he felt drawn to the West Coast, where new adventures awaited. After graduating college at Columbia University in 2004, he moved to California to start graduate school at the PGSP-Stanford Psy.D. Consortium in Palo Alto. For the next five years, he had the privilege of training in a variety of clinical settings, including VA hospitals, college counseling centers, and community mental health agencies. he also had the good fortune of being mentored by some of the leading psychiatrists and psychologists in the field. Although the training Jonah received during these years was invaluable, he couldn't help but feel that there was something missing from mainstream mental health approaches. Namely, there was (and remains) an incredible emphasis on illness, pathology, and suffering. But what about the other side of the coin? During graduate school, he began to supplement my traditional training by learning more about wellness, happiness, and psychological well-being. he stumbled across the burgeoning field of "positive psychology," which studies these topics as well as things like character strengths, virtue, and happiness. This interest soon developed into his passion, and remains so to this day. Today, Jonah wears two hats in his professional life. First, he is the Assistant Regional Director of Mental Health Training at a large HMO in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he helps oversee the mental health training programs across twenty medical centers in Northern California. And secondly, he provide trainings, consultations, and seminars on topics related to wellness, happiness, and reaching your full potential. In 2015, he released his first book, entitled "Real Happiness", a self-help book outlining seven proven paths to happiness and well-being. More recently in 2018, he released by second self-help booked, entitled "The Happiness Toolbox", which provides an array of tools and handouts for both readers and practitioners alike. On June 9, 2020, his third book will be released. Entitled "Awestruck," it will focus on the science of awe and how we can cultivate more awe and wonder in our lives. Todd has accomplished something remarkable in that he has built this and grown it from the bottom up.” When Todd took over this role, BI had two programs: “Management Development Curriculum” and “Lead.” He totally dissolved MDC and built “New Leader Development.” While managers are trained to be great at hitting numbers and benchmarks, Todd believed leaders should be something more. Todd’s work has also taken a leadership program that was 95% male dominated and made it closer to 60%-40% in favor of females. Now, his work is being applied across the organization with the animal health business in the U.S. picking up NLD, the team in Canada visiting the coaching academy, and Todd preparing to visit the global headquarters in Ingelheim to build out the program globally.
