University of Canberra CIO, Matt Carmichael on Being Deliberate With The 1,440 Minutes In Your Day
Saison 5 · Épisode 6
jeudi 28 novembre 2024 • Durée 34:31
A lot of leadership effort is proactive and long-term, and it’s so easy to (and can feel good to) get sucked in by your teams to put out day-to-day operational fires.
However one leader we’ve worked with closely has taken a deliberate approach to creating the bandwidth that allows him and his team to focus on the future.
This is what we talked about with Matt Carmichael, Chief Information Officer, University of Canberra on our Leading Generous Teams podcast this week.
Matt’s refreshing approach is famous for supporting teams to get in the right mindset before taking on transformation projects. He’s a leader to watch.

Dr Richard Harris On The Thai Cave Rescue, Thriving Under Pressure + the People You Want on Your Team
Saison 5 · Épisode 5
jeudi 21 novembre 2024 • Durée 40:20
If you’ve been in our world for a hot minute, you’ll have heard us talk about the mental run up.
The mental run up is made up of automatic thought patterns in response to an upcoming situation. Some we’re not aware of, and some are easy to brush off as “I’m an overthinker.” But they can be a drain, pulling you further away from the task at hand.
They’re often happening behind the scenes without us even realising it, derailing our energy.
The mental run up falls between the moment you’ve made the decision to do something challenging and when you actually do it.
This is what we talked about with Co-Australian of the Year, Dr Richard “Harry” Harris on our Leading Generous Teams podcast this week.
Richard has worked in anaesthesia, diving and aeromedical medicine around the world.
Harry has a professional and voluntary interest in search and rescue operations,
establishing the first flooded cave rescue capability in Australasia. The 2018
Thailand cave rescue was an opportunity to put this training to work.
In 2018 he received the Star of Courage, Australia’s second highest civilian award
for bravery, and the medal of the Order of Australia for his role in the Thailand cave
rescue. Harry was the joint 2019 Australian of the Year with his dive partner Craig
Challen. He is now primarily working as a speaker, author and film maker.
In this episode, we discuss:
- Richard’s mental run up leading up to the Thai Cave Rescue.
- What Richard does to fuel his mindset during uncertain times.
- Insights into techniques for resetting + recharging in life and leadership

ACOSS CEO Dr Cass Goldie on why switching off doesn’t cut it
Saison 4 · Épisode 4
lundi 13 mars 2023 • Durée 33:26
When leaders encourage their team to “switch off” they don’t always realise it can be demotivating and inaccessible.
For many, the idea of switching off is actually daunting. Like a void of space and time that could be used to be making a difference.
Also, you’re not a lightbulb. You don’t have an on and off switch.
It’s not that black and white.
The best thing you can do is learn to go from “on” to “recharge.”
This is what we discussed in the episode with Dr Cassandra Goldie, CEO of the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS).
Cass brings public policy expertise in economic, social and environmental issues, civil society, social justice and human rights. Voted one of the most influential people in the Australian social sector, Cass has spent decades representing the interests of people who are disadvantaged, and civil society generally,
In this episode, we discuss:
- How Cass fuels and engages her team, even during change
- Key lessons from decades of influencing and impact in the social sector
- Insights into techniques for resetting + recharging leadership

St Luke Health’s Barb Brown on how role clarity unlocks purpose
Saison 4 · Épisode 3
lundi 6 mars 2023 • Durée 35:20
Role clarity. It seems so simple it’d be easy to miss.
Of course there’s a job description when the contract is signed, but how do you use that as a tool to support mental fitness and wellbeing in your team?
One of the most important ingredients for a successful team is when they know what their role is and how it fits into the purpose of the organisation.
This is what we spoke about with Barb Brown, Executive Manager of People & Culture from St Lukes Health on the podcast this week.
Barb is an award winning HR leader who has worked across health and aging for decades. Barb’s known for motivating high performing teams and shifting them towards a continuous learning culture. She’s also a terrific car trip buddy!
In this episode, we discuss:
- How Barb fuels and engages teams
- The team questions to ask to amplify purpose
- Insights into techniques for resetting + recharging leadership

Telstra’s Former Group Executive, Alex Badenoch on what vulnerability looks like practically, at the highest levels of leadership.
Saison 4 · Épisode 2
lundi 27 février 2023 • Durée 30:05
Leaders are often looked to as experts. But they’re not. The strongest leaders surround themselves with experts, which means, you don’t know the answer a lot of the time.
When leaders feel like they should know, they miss the opportunity to invite their team to step into their strengths, rally around you, draw out their skills and talents to solve the problem in ways you couldn’t imagine.
This is what vulnerability looks like practically, at the highest levels of leadership.
This is what we discussed with Alex Badenoch, Telstra’s former Group Executive – Transformation, Communication and People on our Leading Generous Teams podcast this week.
Known for her change management skills and ability to deliver strong commercial outcomes across various executive positions, Alex has designed and implemented key initiatives to drive successful change across multiple organisations.
In this episode, we discuss:
- How Alex fuels and engages teams and amplifies performance and outcomes
- What vulnerability looks like practically, at the highest levels of leadership
- Insights into techniques for resetting + recharging leadership

ACF’s CEO, Kelly O’Shanassy on why being a pushover won’t build collaborative teams
Saison 4 · Épisode 1
lundi 20 février 2023 • Durée 35:31
People think that a collaborative team is being a yes person, never disagreeing, and singing kumbaya in a circle.
But actually, leading a collaborative team takes some hard decisions.
This is what we talked about with Kelly O’Shanassy, CEO of the Australian Conservation Foundation on our Leading Generous Teams podcast this week.
We discussed how she fuels herself and her team/ to make the hard decisions and stay focussed on the goals that matter.

INHERITED A TEAM WITH THE WRONG ATTITUDE?
Saison 3
lundi 23 janvier 2023 • Durée 06:18
Inherited a team that is stuck in old ways of thinking + working?
The ol’ “Hire for attitude, train for skill,” doesn’t cut it anymore.
We’ve all heard the saying “Hire for attitude, train for skill,” and that’s nice, but how often do you get to build a team from scratch?
More often than not, our teams are a patchwork of other people’s decisions and history. So when you inherit a team, the “hiring for attitude” ship has sailed.
In this episode we discuss:
- Why this happens
- Why it’s important to train for attitude?
- How to get some complimentary resources + invite to help you with this

Shallow or strategic?
What comes to mind when you think of the highlight reel of your work?
