=====
Expatriation

  •  Once you leave where you grew up, it’s hard to find that sense of belonging again
  •  You’re a foreigner in a new place (expatriation) and also when you go back “home” (repatriation)
  •  Learn to be at home wherever you are
  •  Both you and the places you leave behind change
  •  If you go back home, approach it as another expatriation
  •  Learn to be at home with people rather than places

“A Great Move” Book

  •  People who voluntarily move do so for 3 primary reasons: career/prospects, love, adventure
  •  The attitude of the adventurer is wonderful but can lead to being unprepared
  • Understanding transition stages (honeymoon, crisis, recovery, adjustment)
  •  Personality traits affect the emotional impact
  •  Creating home is a key pillar of feeling stable and grounded

 Being Stuck

  •  Factors that affect us: values, expectations, growth, partner, environment
  •  Some circumstances can keep us stuck, but 90% is about how we approach it (Mindset)
  •  Focusing on the barriers versus focusing on your goals or vision
  •  Conditioning (upbringing, labels, roles, events) matters and shapes us

Reinvention Roadmap

  •  Establish a healthy baseline
  •  Reconnect with ourselves
  •  Align with values, vision, and purpose
  •  Build momentum with baby steps
  •  Deal with saboteurs
  •  Sustain the reinvented person

=====
Leadership is about love and caring

  • Great leaders radiate empathy
  • Which leads to a sense of responsibility
  • Ennobling ideals and enduring values mean more than what many businesses stand for
  • We should benchmark leaders based on how many lives they’ve changed, not dollars they’ve made
  • Let’s stand for something bigger than success
  • We need role models who stand the test of time
  • A leader’s job is to make something happen that wasn’t supposed to happen

Writing books

  • Painful process
  • Takes much longer than you ever thought it would
  • Life is more than “making the doughnuts”
  • Every day is an act of creation
  • It’s something that can have an impact
  • “Masterful Coaching” was written in 1995

Guiding principles for a leader

  • Find your hero
  • Take a stand for something greater than yourself
  • Lead with the power of your words
  • The power of teams is greater than individuals
  • Results now
  • Coach rather than cop
  • Growth through adversity

Growth through adversity

  • Leaders grow through crucible experiences
  • Great adversity can lead to transformation
  • Harry Truman called his troops back after they ran away
  • Character is destiny - Truman studied leaders and battles

Masterful Coaching

  • Become the leader your business needs by realizing the impossible future
  • Be daring to create a legendary company
  • Did you make a difference?
  • Great leaders have integrity, empathy, responsibility, drive, humility and self-reflectiveness

=====
Impactful research

  • provides insights that change business outcomes
  • serves the needs of a customer
  • leads organizational culture change
  • adds operational efficiency

Value of research

  • scrappy not crappy
    • rigorous but smart and situationally aware
    • researchers need business acumen
      • help make the business successful by giving customers what they need
  • in tech, researchers have faced a disproportionate number of layoffs
  • researchers perhaps haven’t done a great job of highlighting its value
  • research is meant to inform good decisions
  • in academia we’re looking for ultimate truth and in industry we’re trying to get to good decisions

Decision making

  • what’s usually missing is measuring the impact of decisions
  • evaluating decisions informs future decisions
  • what’s the thing we need to know?
    • what do we already know about that?
  • identify the different sources of information you have
  • bias
    • HiPPO (highest paid person’s opinion)
    • high value client’s need
    • ask question to mitigate
    • it’s hard to see if insights are tainted and biased
    • people unintentionally introduce bias
      • asking leading questions, carrying assumptions, talking to wrong people
    • decisions are often based on biased information

Crafting good questions

  • go in with learning mindset and sense of curiosity
  • what are we trying to learn and what’s the best way to learn that?
  • open-ended, non-leading
  • we can introduce bias inadvertently by how we ask a question
  • “tell me more” is a powerful question
  • sometimes it may not be a questions, it may be observing what someone’s doing
  • Listen, Observe, Wait and See

S2E15: Using AI to Upgrade Yourself with Don Schmincke

Saison 2 · Épisode 15

jeudi 15 juin 2023Durée 36:10

Text Jason @ Leadership Voyage

Don Schmincke has been accused by a NY press agency of providing “the most provocative and sensational view of business than any other speaker today.”

What else would you expect from an MIT and Johns Hopkins researcher who was nearly arrested as a capitalist spy in the Soviet Bloc, got shot off an aircraft carrier, survived in the Kurdish capital as the Ayatollah held hostages in Tehran, and developed missile inertial guidance systems while his frat brothers took Vegas (later portrayed in the movie “21”)?

Don Schmincke’s irreverent humor and unconventional methods provide audiences such a refreshing change to other status-quo topics that he’s been called the world’s “management renegade.” His patent-pending offerings transcend typical programs via refreshing alternatives to trendy theories, unproven methods, and phony “experts.” The industry agrees.

Don's latest book "Unleash Your Potential" is available on Amazon here.

==========
Artificial Intelligence

  • why hadn’t we asked “artificial intelligence how to humanize us?”
  • latest book was a humorous experiment
  • ChatGPT came up with title and defined the chapters
  • it took ChatGPT 30-40 minutes to write the book
  • ChatGPT is “still an infant” but could see us and tell us how to improve ourselves

AI's view on improving ourselves

  • the answers were primarily a representation of what's been written, such as understand yourself, build goals, and build habits
  • but it added two interesting ideas: improve your mental health and build strong relationships

How to use AI

  • use it as a tool for speed
  • it’s not too different from when the calculator was invented
  • gather information efficiently as a research source
  • but it’s not infallible and makes mistakes

Don't abdicate your thinking

  • it doesn’t provide insights
  • it’s an efficient algorithm
  • humans provide insight on what they see or how they ask
  • the danger comes when we allow AI to be autonomous with other machines

Have fun with it!

  • experiment
  • people use it for things like constructing workout programs
  • don’t be afraid of it
  • it’s still learning as well
