SYNOPSIS:

(courtesy of Connor-El & Wiki)

PART 1

A criminal named Fido and his gang are speculating on the origin of Superman and plotting how to deal with him. They send a dupe to rob a bank to test how fast Superman reacts, while Fido reveals his Super-criminal father claimed to have broken Supermans arm, and told him Superman was raised by the metropolis elite with a silver spoon in his mouth never having to struggle, hence his strict moral compass. Meanwhile Superman overhears them and warns them not to plot anything, and leaves. Lois picks up Clark and Pa Kent and over dinner Pa starts to tell a story from Clarks childhood about his first time to a city. In the past with Clark present Pa stole some candy from a crooked clerk overcharging people in need and gave some to clark, tellin him some rules can be broken. Later during a solar eclipse Clark sees a city in the distance and runs to it. Meanwhile Fidos gang creates a series of disasters from fires to blowing up a bridge, to hold Superman off while they break into lex corps to steal his old invention, a pair of gloves that can create dimensional portals. Superman eventually catches up with them and FIdo lures him through the portal, severing at the neck and coming into possession of the head of Superman!

PART 2

Jonathan Kent recalls an incident when Clark was ten-years-old and a solar eclipse caused his innate Kryptonian powers to briefly manifest before they should have. Clark ran from Smallville to Chicago in under an hour and found himself embroiled in a brewing conflict between two rival members which resulted in both of their detahs. In the present, Superman is suffering from a laboratory experiment malfunction in which his head has been displaced through a dimensional portal. A former scientist named John "Fido" Pollock has the head and plans on using it as leverage in order to gain favor with Lex Luthor. This is complicated by a series of disasters happening nearby, Superman pleads with Fido to release him to save them, promising he will come back. Fido complies and lets Superman go, superman rescues everyone he can but a child dies in the process. After Supermans return, Fido and his cronies bring Superman's head to Luthor's office and offers him a demonstration of his Trans-Locational Portal gloves. Luthor is unimpressed until Pollock also reveals that he has another invention that can alter the size ratio of volumes of matter and threatens to use this technology to destroy Metropolis. A fire fight breaks out between Fido's thugs and Luthors' security team. A pile of debris falls through the spatial portal and giant-sized coins, paperclips and batteries begin raining down on Metropolis. Luthor frees Superman so that he can save the city.

PART 3

Thanks to the efforts of criminal inventor John "Fido" Pollock, a wave of giant-sized pocket debris begins raining down on Metropolis. Superman flies out and deflects giant coins, fountain pens and paperclips from smashing through the city.

At Lexcorp Tower, Fido and his crew use their trans-locational gloves to escape before Luthor's security team can gun them down. They stop at another LexCorp facility to hijack a NASA hovercraft. Lois Lane is present and tries to sneak on board, but Fido captures her and uses her tech to shrink her down in size.

Superman arrives at the facility and his father, Jonathan Kent, tells him that the bandits have kidnapped Lois. Superman then takes off and flies after them.

He traces the crew to Cairo, Egypt. Fido comes up with another idea. Using the Trans-Locational Portal, he locates the imprisoned Metallo and steals a small piece of Kryptonite from his chest cavity. He intends on using to subdue Superman. When they realize that Superman is in range, they scramble into the hovercraft leaving behind one of their own, Hopper.

They open a dimensional portal to Chicago, but Superman is fast enough to follow them into the portal. They zigzag through the city, but eventually the Jet-Car runs out of fuel. By this point, Fido's cronies realize that there is no escape and they abandon him. While Superman rounds up henchpeople Trudy and Sulley, Fido hijacks a pick-up truck. Superman bears down on him, but Fido temporarily blinds him with one of the hi-tech weapons they stole from LexCorp.

Superman shakes off the effects, but Fido has one more ace up his sleeve. He enlarges the Kryptonite pebble he stole from Metallo and uses it to pin Superman to the ground. While Fido is boasting about his supposed conquest, Lois escapes from the vial she was trapped in and uses Fido's Scaling Gloves to return to normal size. She then uses the same gloves to reduce the Kryptonite block back to pebble size.

Through the course of this, Superman learns that Fido has always lived in the shadow of his abusive father, Frank "Pit Bull" Pollock – a man who once claimed to have broken Superman's arm in combat. Superman slightly recalls the event, and tells Fido that his father never bested him, and certainly never broke his arm. Fido knows that Superman would never lie, and the sudden revelation drives him into a fury. He unloads on Superman with every weapon at his disposal, but they do no good. Once his arsenal is spent, Fido collapses to the ground and Superman takes him into custody.

Episode 40 - Superboy and the Legion of Superheroes vs Mordru!03 Apr 202001:43:38

EPISODE 40: Superboy and the Legion of Superheroes vs Mordru!

The Last Sons do Super Friend Robert Reineke's request of Adventure Comics 369 & 370! Its Connor-El & Rey-Zods first proper go of the Legion of Superheroes! A grand tale of facing down a terrifying foe! You don't want to miss it!

Plus we cover the new Superman releases, possibly for the last time in a while!

SYNOPSIS:

(courtesy of Rey-Zod)

Adventure Comics #369-#370

#369 - Part 1, MORDRU THE MERCILESS

The Legionnaire's most powerful enemy, Mordru has escaped his confines and is in pursuit of the young heroes.

Super Boy, Mon El, Duo Damsel and Shadow Lass make a narrow escape into the 20th century and find themselves in Smallville.

Mon El recounts to Shadow Lass the origin of Mordru and the awesome power he wields. The Legion were able to trick him and eventually incapacitate him but a small mistake leads to Mordru's resuscitation and his eventual pursuit of his would-be captors.

In Smallville, the quartet bunker down at various residences , all under guise - Super Boy as Clark Kent and Mon El as Bob Cobb his cousin stay with the Kents ; Duo Damsel as Marie Elkins (passes herself off as a distant cousin to Chief Parker;  and last but not least a heavily make-upped Shadow Lass as Betsy Norcross sneaks in with the Langs as an exchange student.

Mordru's influence is soon felt in the town in the visage of a great shadow and the heroes do well to shield themselves, lest they be discovered by the evil sorcerer.

Mordru affects the minds of the other citizens and turns them into his eyes and ears - any sign of the Legionnaires and the citizens will alert Mordru.

In another effort, Mordru conjures up illusions in the hope that the heroes will expose themselves. Mon-El however maintains a cool head and reassures the others. It's not long before the illusions disappear and Mordru's plan is foiled again.

#369 - Part 2, MORDRU AND THE MOB

With the heroes hiding, the presence of Super Boy is sorely missed and soon crime escalates. The mob moves in and 'King' Carter sets up his kingdom in Smallville, demanding tributes and anything else he wishes.

Although the Legionnaires dare not expose themselves, they convince the town to stand up to the mob, and with a little subtle help from the Legionnaires the mob's rule is soon defeated.

A small meeting by the Legionnaire is spied upon by Lana, and being the eyes and ears of Mordru, she exposes them to the evil villain. Mordru suddenly appears in front of the Legion of Super Heroes to wreak his revenge!

#370 - Part 1, THE DEVIL'S JURY

The Legionnaires escape Mordru by burrowing down and escaping his magical wrath. They manage to make it to Clark's basement and there, along with his parents, they wipe their minds to ensure Mordru can't locate them with their thoughts. If they do not know they are the Legion of Super Heroes, then neither does Mordru!

Mordru summons an army from his time and reality, and Mordru literally isolates Smallville by casting it up into orbit - trapping everyone in the town.

The army spread out intent on finding the heroes, but to no avail. Pete Ross clues in to the fact that Clark has forgotten about his own identity, and so he and Lana capture Clark to make him remember. Clark soon does, and he quickly finds the other Legionnaires and restores their memory too.

With Pete Ross (Honorary Legionnaire) and Lana Insect Queen (Reserve Legionnaire), the six are ready to do battle with Mordru and defeat him once and for all…!

#370 - Part 2, THE CONDEMNED CRUSADERS

Their cunning plan involves duping the army with a couple of foils in Pete Ross as SuperBoy and one of Duo Damsels as Shadow Lass. As they are all eventually captured and brought to Mordru's Lair, Super Boy and Shadow Lass effect their surprise attack.

It momentarily stuns Mordru, but he is too powerful and eventually he defeats them all.

Mordru brings them all on trial in front of a Devil's Jury and with Wraithor at the helm of the prosecution and Pete Ross as the Defence, the heroes are found guilty and are sentenced to Eternal Oblivion in a deadly lead lined, Krypton coated vault.

It proves a fake as Wraithor reveals to be a sympathiser to the heroes and leads them to freedom. Mordru catches on and disposes of the Wraithor in a fatal blast. He incapacitates the heroes once again but makes the mistake of summoning too much power to kill them. The might of his power is too much for the cavern to bear and it collapses, burying Mordru and entombing him once more.

The heroes find themselves free (ironically shielded from the cavern collapse by the force field Mordru cast on them to trap them) and return to the 30th century.

It's revealed their colleagues, Invisible Kid, Dream Girl and Ultra Kidwere not killed by Mordru, but had constructed an illusion to make it seem that they were, with a little help from the White Witch and Princess Projectra.

Episode 39 - Green Lantern / Superman - Legend of the Green Flame19 Mar 202001:16:09

EPISODE 39: Green Lantern / Superman - Legend of the Green Flame

The Last Sons choose a story resurrected from the dead, so to speak and one that has an interesting birth..!

Neil Gaiman's tale didn't see the light until much after it was conceived, but the Last Sons review it with gusto!

All this, along with some discussion of the latest Superman related titles and news... offered to you on a silver platter!

SYNOPSIS:

(courtesy of Wiki)

In 1949 Berlin, Janos Prohaska and Weng Chan of the Blackhawks Squadron go down into a deserted bunker covered in rats and littered with long dead bodies. The two are looking for a German secret weapon Janos heard about from a mysterious 'she'. They come across a strange green railroad lantern buried in a pile of rubbish. Janos is intrigued over the object as he is faintly reminded of a legend surrounding a green lantern although he is unable to recall the specific significance of the lantern, and he decides to take it with him.

In the present day, Clark Kent finds Hal Jordan in Metropolis and invites him over to spend some time together. When Clark ask Hal about his romantic relationship with Arisia, Hal succinctly stated that "We split." Clark, aware of how difficult a dual life and a relationship are to manage, also knows that any words as this moment would be too thin to offer any real comfort. Hal explains he's having a personal crisis stating he used to be part of the Green Lantern Corps with a purpose and a plan. But with Oa drained and the Guardians fled, all he is a man with a ring.

After some reassurances from Clark, they accompany each other to a museum convention Clark is supposed to cover for the Daily Planet, and briefly running into Selina Kyle. They then find the green lantern discovered by Janos in an exhibition. Hal recognizes it as a power battery, and tries loading his power ring with it despite Clark's wariness. The effect is disastrous and a wave of magic energy kills both heroes. They wind up in the Region of the Just Dead and encounter Deadman, who explains that their deaths are not irrevocable until they have gone "into the light". Hal then tries using his ring to take them back to their bodies, the worst thing he could have done...

Meanwhile, the Phantom Stranger sits in the apartment given to him by the Lords of Order, his current masters. Sensing that something else needs his attention, he finally leaves the apartment forever and dismisses the Lords, who insists that he cannot leave his confinement. The Phantom admits to no membership or affiliation with any group and also denies belonging to this place or even having a home, because if he belonged then he would cease to be a stranger. He bids the voices farewell, even as their threats of wrath echo in a now empty room.

Superman and Hal have wound up in Hell, where Superman's super-senses can not experience anything but suffering, fear and pain. Horrified by realizing that he can't save these innumerable souls, he is slowly going mad. The catatonic Man of Steel can't do anything but float around and cry, while a terrified Green Lantern desperately tries waking him up. When the two of them are attacked by blood-thirsty demons, Hal once again uses his ring, and they disappear.

Superman and Green Lantern encounter the power that killed them - the sentient Green Flame, the remains of the magic energies of Maltus. The Green Flame explains that their deaths were a result of Jordan trying to load his scientific ring with supernatural energies. Then it tempts Hal to give in for the supernatural power of the Green Flame instead. At that point, the Stranger appears, and teaches Hal how to tame the corrupt Flame. Hal reads the oath of Alan Scott, loads his ring, and the threat of the Green Flame is neutralized. The Stranger then returns Hal's and Superman's souls to their bodies, disposing of the lantern.

Alive after this experience, Hal is feeling better. Superman tells Hal that, even given tonight, it was good to see him, and lets Hal know he's always just a call away. After a warm good-bye, the two heroes part.

SYNOPSIS:

The Flash #53

(Courtesy of Rey-Zod)

Fast Friends

Flash and the Piper ruminate about Gotham's finest villain when it's revealed that Piper is homosexual. Wally West is notably shaken by this and makes a hasty exit much to Piper's amusement.

He meets up with Superman who has a favour to ask. Jimmy Olsen having found himself embroiled in some trouble with a meta human called the Silver Squid, and Esquelito, forces Superman to Flash to  poke around San Felipe to investigate whether Esquelito (thought dead for two years) is actually alive or not.

Flash runs over to San Felipe Chile, whilst Superman investigates the CIA in Langley, Virginia. Wally West discovers that although San Felipe looks like paradise, the society still appears in squalor. Suspicious of staff within the US Embassy, Wally spots a shady looking man headed out to sea and discovers beyond lies the island where the el presidente keeps prisoners.

Flash navigates past a series of electric nets, mines and barbed wire before arriving at the island with a crew of armed gunmen waiting.

It's not long before Wally discovers Esquelito alive and well on the island and still functioning as the president.

Superman discovers that the Silver Squid, aka Morgan Rule was ex CIA and in allegiance with Esquelito. Things turned sour when Morgan Rule wanted out, resulting in Esquelito torturing and killing his family. Superman, now with the truth about Morgan Rule, flies off hoping that Jimmy isn't an innocent victim of the Silver Squid's vengeance.

Meanwhile, Esquelito reveals to the Flash how he has the protection of the CIA, but in an instant, the Flash abducts Esquelito...leaving the G-Men behind on the island.

Superman reconvenes with the Silver Squid and Jimmy Olsen just as the Flash arrives with Esquelito. Silver Squid attempts to kill Esquelito but is too slow for the Flash, who grabs Jimmy out of the way, as Superman deals with the vengeful ex-CIA agent. Having tried to boost his powers of electricity with amphetamines and steroids, it's not long before the Silver Squid snuffs out right before Superman.

In a final flourish, it's revealed that it's the Pied Piper in Flash's suit and Wally had snuck around to grab Jimmy whilst the Silver Squid was distracted.

Superman asks where Esquelito is, and the Flash remarks that he dropped him off downtown, screaming and acting the fool!

SYNOPSIS:

Superman : Red Son (2003)

(Courtesy of Wiki)

Red Son Rising

The first part starts in the 1950s, and sets up the board and the pieces. The world is nearly identical to our own to begin with, but starts diverging rapidly as the Soviet Union unveils its newest asset, Superman, upsetting the Cold War and turning the nuclear arms race into a super-being arms race.

At this point Superman is a newcomer in Stalin's inner circle. He's kind-hearted and just, and also dedicated to the cause of communism. When possible, he spends his time detecting and preventing accidents around the USSR. His opposing number is the American Lex Luthor, a legitimate scientist at the employ of S.T.A.R. Labs and a super-genius who is very well aware of his intellect and has very little regard for lesser minds. He is married to Lois Lane. At the behest of his CIA contact, Agent Olsen, he begins attempts to destroy Superman.

In order to collect genetic material for his first attempt, Luthor causes Sputnik 2 to plummet towards Metropolis. As Luthor predicted, Superman arrives in time to divert its course. In the process, he meets Lois Luthor, and though there is immediate romantic tension between them, they do not pursue their mutual attraction as Lois is married. In a nod to the mainstream continuity, the story makes mention of a best-selling fictional work which depicts Superman and Lois involved in a romance. The satellite is retrieved by the United States government and Luthor uses the traces found on it to create a Bizarro clone of Superman.

Meanwhile, Superman meets Wonder Woman at a diplomatic party. She becomes rather smitten by Superman, but he is forced to leave when he spots Pyotr Roslov, Chief of the NKVD and Stalin's illegitimate son, who is drunk and extremely disgruntled. Pyotr is angry at everything, especially at Superman, whose arrival has rewritten the Soviet Union's power structure, turned his father's attention away from him and putting a stop to his chances of advancement. Having had to shoot a dissident couple before their own son's eyes for printing anti-Superman propaganda, Pyotr snapped and arranged Stalin's poisoning, which in turn has caused him horrible guilt, though not enough to confess. Stalin dies from cyanide poisoning, but Superman initially declines the leadership of the Party.

Meanwhile, Luthor's clone is finished and engages Superman. The duel is inconclusive on its own, but causes an accidental nuclear missile launch at Great Britain. The clone, which has been made too much like Superman, sacrifices himself to save millions, although Superman's visible heroism and the accidental nuclear missile launch coupled with damage in London resulting in high civilian casualties apparently lead to an irrevocable breach in Anglo-American relations. Horrified at the implication that Superman is more intelligent than himself after losing a chess game to the clone, Luthor murders his research staff before leaving S.T.A.R Labs and founding Luthorcorp, dedicating his life to destroying Superman. Lois is nigh-abandoned and longs for Superman. Superman himself tries to put this all out of his mind, but a chance meeting with Lana Lazarenko, his childhood flame, changes things entirely. Seeing the suffering of her and her children, Superman realizes that his powers could be used for a greater good, and assumes leadership of the country in order to transform it into a utopia.

Red Son Ascendant

It is an alternate 1978, and the fictional world of Red Son has diverged greatly from our own. There are no references to Soviet interventions in East Germany (1953), Hungary (1956), Czechoslovakia (1968) or Afghanistan, which implies that Soviet prosperity has spread to its satellites, and mitigated the existence of dissident movements in those societies.

John F. Kennedy is president of the United States, having replaced the tragically slain Richard Nixon, who won the 1960 election but was assassinated in DallasTexas, in 1963. Luthor has devised and executed several plans to thwart Superman, none of which have worked. Only the United States and Chile remain independent from the Soviets, and both are on the brink of collapse, while President Kennedy is forced to grant independence to Georgia, and he acknowledges that there have been similar secessionist pressures in Detroit and Texas, riots in California, and even a "communist sympathiser" terrorist attack on the White House. He has also married Marilyn Monroe, and divorced Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy in this world. By contrast, the Superman-led (Global) Soviet Union has grown without resorting to war, and has virtually eliminated poverty, disease and the like, but this has started to infringe on individual liberties, and Superman is fast becoming a Big Brother-like figure. A brain surgery technique that turns dissidents into obedient drones, or "Superman Robots," is in use.

Wonder Woman and Superman have now become a duo, using their superpowers to save lives in addition to their ambassadorial and governing duties. Wonder Woman has fallen for Superman, but he sees her simply as a comrade, and is cheerfully oblivious to her love for him. Lois Luthor succeeds Perry White as the editor-in-chief of a failing Daily Planet, while her estranged husband feverishly works on his obsession.

Luthor plans to shrink Moscow, but this fails when Brainiac, his collaborator, shrinks Stalingrad instead. Superman intervenes and retrieves both Brainiac's central processing unit and the tiny city, putting an end to the Brainiac-Luthor cooperation, although he is unable to restore Stalingrad and its inhabitants to their proper size. This becomes his one failure and a source of great guilt.

Luthor's second plan involves Batman, who is revealed as the boy orphaned by Pyotr early in the story, now a grown man and the head of an anarchist terrorist network that sees the abundance forced upon the people by Superman's system as little more than oppression. Their persistent success in avoiding capture is a thorn in Superman's side. Batman joins forces with Lexcorp and with his parents' killer, Pyotr, now head of the KGB and consumed by jealousy of Superman, to attempt a coup. They capture Wonder Woman and use her as bait for Superman, hoping to sap his powers with rays that imitate the light of Superman's native sun. The plan works, but Wonder Woman breaks free and rescues Superman, although the process (which requires severing her golden lasso) seriously injures her, snapping something inside her and causing her hair to turn instantly white. Batman commits suicide to avoid capture, but not before revealing to Superman that Pyotr had a role in the plot. Pyotr is then turned into a Superman Robot.

As the part ends, Luthor's third plan begins, when Luthor is given a mysterious green lantern found in an alien ship that crashed at Roswell, New Mexico. Batman has become a martyr for his cause, Brainiac is reprogrammed into Superman's aide, and the construction of a version of the Fortress of Solitude, here located in Siberia and referred to as "the Winter Palace", begins. The stage is set for the finale.

Red Son Setting

It is the year 2001, and the Global Soviet Union encompasses all countries except for Chile and the divided remnants of the United States of America, which underwent a disastrous civil war in 1986, after which an unnamed sixteen states seceded from the union. Within the Soviet sphere of influence there is no crime, no poverty, no unemployment, and no choice. The "Superman Robot" operation is a common punishment for dissent. Superman is committed to "winning the argument" with the US, and repeatedly refuses Brainiac's suggestions of an invasion. His sole failure remains Stalingrad, which is ravaged by a green microscopic organism bearing resemblance to a Sheep louse.

Luthor runs for, and wins, the American presidency, with Jimmy Olsen as his running-mate. He has succeeded a President "Friedman", whose misrule resulted in food riots and tanks on New York's First Avenue. Whether or not this is the late economist Milton Friedman is unclear. Using his scientific expertise, massive economic capital and dictatorial powers, he returns prosperity to his country, overcoming the secession that had sundered the United States fifteen years beforehand. He remains as asocial as ever, though, and this is only a part of a larger plan to provoke Superman into invading America so that he can be destroyed, as Lois Luthor and Lucy Lane Olsen concur in the deserted offices of the long-closed Daily Planet in Metropolis. Luthor confronts Superman in the Siberian Winter Palace. In a seemingly anticlimactic moment, Brainiac yanks Luthor deep into the recesses of the Fortress to be surgically turned into yet another Superman Robot. Superman agrees that his hand has been forced, and prepares to attack.

Superman takes on the East Coast, confronting and defeating the Green Lantern Marine Corps, which is led by Colonel Hal Jordan, and featuring Privates ScottStewartRayner, and Gardner. He defeats the Amazon forces commanded by a highly disillusioned Wonder Woman, and a collection of "super-menaces" that Luthor has put together over the years. Brainiac's spaceship cuts the U.S. Pacific fleet to pieces, and the two superbeings meet at the White House, where Lois Luthor waits with the last weapon, a small note written by Lex that manages to break the Comrade of Steel's resolve. It reads, "Why don't you just put the whole WORLD in a BOTTLE, Superman?"

Superman orders Brainiac to end the invasion, but the robot reveals that he is not as reprogrammed as everyone thought, attacking Superman with green radiation that may be analogous to green kryptonite, given its effects on this Superman, while boasting that "eventually the entire universe" will "hum to his battery". He is shut down by Luthor, who evaded surgery (by undisclosed means) during the invasion, and is destroyed by Superman. This triggers a fail-safe self-destruct (though it is lightly implied that Luthor had planned for this to happen) and as the gravitational singularities powering Brainiac's ship threaten to explode, Superman rockets it into outer space, where it blows up. The Earth is saved, but Superman is thought to have been caught in an explosion which is said to have a kill radius of 15,000,000 miles (24,000,000 km).

The epilogue follows. The Soviet Union falls into chaos, and is transformed by the Batmen. Lex Luthor goes on to integrate many of Superman's ideas into the new philosophy of "Luthorism" and form a "Global United States". This becomes the defining moment for mankind's future as it enters an unprecedented age of peace and stability. A benevolent world government is formed and maintained, and Luthor presides over a string of scientific achievements, including the cure of all known disease, and colonisation of the solar system. Lex Luthor lives for over two thousand years. At his funeral it is revealed that Superman survived and is apparently immortal, although this is unknown to Lois, who has outlived her husband.

Now permanently retired from public view, he goes on to describe Luthor's descendants, culminating in Jor-L, "whose intellect exceeded that of even his beloved ancestor." Billions of years in the future, it is revealed that Earth is being torn apart by tidal stresses from its sun (which has become a red giant). Jor-L and Lara send their infant son rocketing back into the past. The final panels of the comic book depict the landing of Kal-L's timeship in a Ukrainian collective in 1938, effectively causing a predestination paradox.

(Written by Rey-Zod)

Whilst on his regular patrol, Superman notices a strange aura surrounding the Galaxy Broadcasting building. Upon arrival, Superman is assaulted with the sight of a monster made from pure electricity. Both Jimmy and Lois try to confront the beast, but Superman intervenes and is no more successful in defeating the seemingly indestructible behemoth.

A momentary blackout ensues before the mysterious disappearance of the electrical monster.

Superman decides to investigate further as Clark and discovers from the cutting edge technology of Mr. Edge's Super Computer from the transmission building that the aura was radiation from quark energy.

It's not long before the Electronic Ghost is sighted at the TRansmission Tower and so Superman flies off to confront it once more.

After saving Lois from a close shave, Superman seemingly obliterates the ghost by hurling a steel beam at it.

Elsewhere a group of thugs conspire to earn money through a device called a Wraith Raiser. They send a note to the WGBS Broadcasting office claiming that they are responsible for the Electronic Ghost. Signed Teach Gilbert, Clark (who works at WGBS alongside Lois and Jimmy), drops everything to follow the lead, as Superman. Teach Gilbert intends to blackmail the city mayor with the device but Superman intervenes and proves the Wraith Raiser to be nothing but a hoax.

After Teach Gilbert and his cronies are arrested, Superman spots the purple aura again and follows it's trail to the nuclear power plant. A chain reaction begins in the plant but with a bit of quick thinking, Superman hurls the reaction room up out of the atmosphere and into space.

Superman surmises that the Electronic Ghost is connected to Mr. Edge's main computer as the Transmittor Tower and nuclear plant are fed by the main line of the super computer.

Superman tracks down the location of the Super Computer and it's revealed the Electronic Ghost is the child of the Super Computer, who has attained artifical intelligence.

One final battle ensues as Superman goes head to head with the Electronic Ghost, but after destroying some of the computers cables, Superman is able to defeat both the Super Computer and the Electronic Ghost…

Superman is left feeling empty at having destroyed two beings who had only just come to life - the Super Computer the parent, and the Electronic Ghost, it's child.

SYNOPSIS:

Superman Annual #11 - 'For the Man Who Has Everything' (1985)

(Courtesy of Wiki)

BatmanRobin, and Wonder Woman pay Superman a visit at his Fortress of Solitude, with Batman and Wonder Woman bearing gifts for the Man of Steel's birthday. However, upon their initial entry, they see Superman standing rather still with a strange alien plant attached to his chest and wrapping its tendrils around him. They call out to him, but Superman doesn't respond. His mind is entranced by a vision he sees...

...a vision of him being on a Krypton that never exploded, living out the normal life of an average Kryptonian, being married and having a son and a daughter. He comes home from work and is greeted by a surprise firstday party which most of his family, except for his father Jor-El, attends. His father has become angry and bitter over being the laughingstock of the Science Council for predicting the end of Krypton which never happened, and is now joining with an extreme political sect called the Sword of Rao in the hopes of restoring Krypton to the way it used to be.

As the three heroes try to determine where the plant came from and what it's doing to Superman, a gigantic yellow-skinned muscular humanoid male named Mongul shows up, telling them that the plant is a Black Mercy, which gives its victims the desire of their hearts, trapping them in a dreamworld that they cannot escape from. He challenges the three heroes to take him on one-on-one to find one among the Earth beings worthy enough to kill. Wonder Woman steps up to the challenge, nearly breaking her hand when she gave Mongul a punch. Mongul throws her through a wall, where she enters the weapons room of the Fortress, and uses one of the more powerful energy blasters to take on Mongul. Meanwhile, Batman tries to reach out to Superman to get him to snap out of his dream world as he attempts to unwrap Black Mercy's tendrils from the Man of Steel.

On Krypton, Kal-El meets his aunt Allura in the hospital to comfort her when his cousin Kara fell victim to a violent protester demanding the release of the Phantom Zone criminals. He calls his wife and tells her to go someplace safe with their daughter and that he and their son will meet her there. Along the way Kal-El finds a gathering of Sword of Rao loyalists hearing Jor-El's charged speech about the current state of affairs on Krypton. Finally he takes his son to the site where the city Kandor used to be, and tells him that he has a feeling that nothing he has experienced is even real. Soon he starts to see his son and all Krypton vanish before his eyes...

Batman succeeds in pulling Black Mercy off Superman's body, only for it to now latch onto him and give him a fantasy based on the desires of his heart. In Batman's fantasy, he sees that his father, on the night that his parents were murdered by a low-life criminal on the street, succeeds in overpowering the criminal and thus preventing the murder from ever happening. Bruce grows up happily, marries Kathy Kane, and they have a teenaged daughter.

Superman, now freed from the Black Mercy's thrall, attacks Mongul in a rage, angry that he had been pulled from his fantasy of being on a Krypton that was never destroyed and losing everything that was so dear in the process. During this fight, Robin uses the gauntlets that Mongul pulled off his hands and grabs Black Mercy, pulling it off Batman and carrying it to where he would hope to dump it on Mongul.

The fight between Superman and Mongul, with neither side prevailing, carries over into a room where the Kryptonian is distracted by the statue of his parents holding up a globe representing the lost world of Krypton, and Mongul uses it to pummel Superman. However, Mongul is distracted by Robin calling to him and sees him through a hole in the ceiling one floor up. Robin then drops Black Mercy right on Mongul, and instantly it wraps itself around Mongul, giving him a fantasy of his own heart's desire. In that fantasy, he kills Robin as well as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman and then takes over as the leader of a new Warworld. In reality, Mongul simply drops to the ground, with the heroes now relieved that the fight is over.

Batman and Wonder Woman finally present their birthday gifts to Superman. Wonder Woman shows him a perfect replica of the Bottle City of Kandor made by the Paradise Island Gemsmiths. He quickly goes to hide the replica he already has before taking the one from Wonder Woman and kissing her. The two think about a romantic relationship, but concede it will be too predictable. Batman shows him a new species of a plant blossom called the Krypton -- a blossom that ended up being crushed during the fight. Superman nonetheless is pleased that his friends and allies have even thought of bringing him gifts and then offers them coffee.

SYNOPSIS:

Superman #141 - 'Return to Krypton' (1960)

(Courtesy of Wiki)

While out on patrol, Superman is stopped by Professor Galsworthy at the Metropolis Observatory, who has made an astonishing discovery. Showing Superman his telescope, they find a strange planet out in space, Superman goes to investigate and learns that it's actually a living creature. Upon his approach, the living creature flees, Superman chases after it but goes too fast and ends up flying through the time barrier and into the past. Finding himself in a sector of space before Krypton exploded, he begins to lose his powers due to proximity to the system's red sun. Trapped on Krypton, Superman frets over the fact that now that he is stuck on Krypton, he will be as doomed as everyone else when the planet explodes. To his surprise, he thinks he stumbles upon a space ship, however he soon learns that it's just the set of a science fiction film that a Kryptonian film company is working on. Pretending to be a member of the cast, Superman meets a pretty blond actress while on the set. Later, the director asks Superman to continue wearing his "space uniform" (his Superman costume) all the time as publicity for the film.

Exploring Krypton, Superman hears reports of his parents, Jor-El and Lara, and how they intend to get married that very day. Wanting to see the momentous occasion, Superman is a guest at his parents' wedding. Deciding that he wants to get to know his parents, he orchestrates a meeting with them, and quickly befriends Jor-El and Lara. They hit things off, and soon Superman is hired on as an assistant working with his father, he assists him on his rocket project. Later, Jor-El introduces Superman to Lyla Lerrol, the blond woman he was "working" with on the set of the movie "The Space Explorers." The two end up spending a lot of time together over the coming days and eventually begin to fall in love. Superman struggles with keeping his true identity secret from his parents, wanting so badly to tell them who he is. He and Lyla end up expressing their feelings for one another and share a romantic evening.

Continuing his work with Jor-El, Superman is told about Krypton's intended doom, and how he intends to build a fleet of space ships so that his fellow Kryptonians can leave the planet. He shows Superman that he's been observing the planet Earth, and ironically he's been monitoring the lives of Jonathan and Martha Kent to learn about Earth culture. Revealing to Superman that Jonathan's attempts to courting Martha are co-opted by a crooked banker. Left alone, Superman uses a Kryptonian weapon to expose the man as a criminal, which leads to the timid Jonathan Kent knocking him out in front of Martha, and the two falling in love.

Believing that perhaps he can prevent his family from perishing when Krypton is destroyed, he learns that fellow Kryptonian Ken-Dal has a new fuel that may assist in Jor-El's plan to save everyone. Seeking out Ken-Dal with Lyla Lerrol, they just barely avoid capture when Brainiac arrives on Krypton and steals the city of Kandor -- where Ken-Dal lives -- ruining any hope that Superman could use him to save everyone on Krypton. Later, Lara learns that she is pregnant, and with Jor-El's approval, they agree to name their son Kal-El, after their friend Superman. Later, Jor-El and Superman go to an active volcano to learn more about Krypton's impending doom, and just barely manage to escape with their lives.

Being called back to the set of the movie, Superman films the final scenes of the film with Lyla, and they all have a wrap-up celebration. During the festivities, a fire-breathing beast gets loose, both it and Superman are in the mock-up space ship when the creatures fire breath causes the ship to fly off into space, Superman's sudden exit devastates Lyla. Being taken into the proximity of a yellow sun, Superman's powers are restored and he uses them to travel back through the time barrier back to the present, deciding that protecting the Earth in the present is more important than his romance. Back in the present, Superman narrowly dodges some Green Kryptonite meteors before returning to Earth where he reflects on his adventure in the past, but is glad to be home.

After being assigned to write a Christmas story for the Daily PlanetClark Kent and Lois Lane purvey Metropolis' department stores. They meet young Billy Connelly, a poor young boy who is unable to afford anything for Christmas, and take pity on him. Lois and Clark return to Perry White's office, and suggest a Daily Planet-sponsored Toy Drive to help out needy children. Clark also sees a rich boy, James Daniels, who has many toys but is spoilt and tired of them all, throwing a tantrum when he receives childish playthings, demanding greater gifts instead. That night, as Superman, Clark takes young James on a tour of the city showing him less fortunate children, and James realizes how much he has, and how little others do, having a Christmas revelation.

At the North Pole, two elderly men who hate Christmas, Doctor Grouch and Mister Meaney attempt to convince Santa Claus to end his philanthropy, and instead join them in a business venture. Although the Elves kick them out, Grouch and Meaney decide to take their campaign elsewhere, starting with shutting down the Toy Drive at the Daily Planet. They knock the employees out with gas, and then set the presents on fire. Luckily, immediately after they leave, Clark Kent changes into Superman and puts the fires out.

Grouch and Meaney go back to Santa's workshop, and begin destroying all of the toys with axes. When they find Lois Lane sneaking around, they tie her to a rocket and light it, intending to shoot her to the heavens. In the workshop they are rebuffed again by a swarm of Toy Soldiers Santa uses as a security system. Superman rescues Lois. Meaney and Grouch instead decide to kidnap Santa's Reindeer.

Santa calls on Superman to help him rescue the Reindeer, and although he is successful, at the last second Meaney jumps out and gasses the Reindeer too, making them unable to work on Christmas. Superman is forced to fly Santa's sleigh around himself!

At the end of the night, Superman and Santa go to Mr. Grouch's house, where Grouch once more has Lois Lane captive again. Despite their evil that night, Santa decides to forgive the two, and gives them both presents anyway. Grouch and Meaney have a complete change of heart, and gain great respect for Santa, deciding to like Christmas after all.

On the way home, Superman witnesses James Daniels carrying loads of presents with his Butler, intending to give them to all of the unfortunate children of Metropolis. Superman wishes everyone a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.

CHAPTER III

...and he cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth, and when he cried, seven thunders uttered their voices...

Norman McCay sees yet another vision, this time of Captain Marvel calling down lightning upon himself. These visions he is seeing are what he believes are "dreams of Armageddon". He and the Spectre are now taken to an ominous-looking dome that now stands upon the Kansas wastelands: this dome is Superman's reformation center for superhumans, called the "Gulag". Due to its vast size, it was intended to house prisoners for months to come, but within two weeks of its construction it filled beyond capacity, though due to its architect and warden it was able to contain its numbers. Kryptonian battlesuit robots stand guard watching over the residents in the "Gulag's" beautiful environment. Dissenters among them mock at the Superman holograms trying to educate them of the proper use of their powers and abilities, with Captain Comet dealing with the hard-case types like Von Bach. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor uses White's "eye" to spy on the simmering stew of unrest within the "Gulag". Norman McCay and the Spectre also notice the Quintessence looking down upon Billy Batson being with Luthor, with Shazam pleading with his fellows for understanding regarding Batson. As the Spectre engages with the Quintessence in conversation, McCay speaks with Deadman, who at this point is now a spirit in skeletal form wearing rotted circus acrobat clothes.

Outside the Green Lantern's satellite which is being used as the Justice League headquarters, Superman and Wonder Woman have a peaceful discussion as they fling rocks around some asteroids, with Wonder Woman telling Superman that she had been ousted from Paradise Island for failing in her mission as the Amazons' ambassador for peace.

In the heart of an underground lab, Lex Luthor subjects Billy Batson to torture by making him watch gruesome images of him and his friends being slaughtered by superhumans and causing worms to crawl in and out of Batson's ears, keeping him from saying Shazam's name. Luthor later joins with Bruce Wayne in a special war room where Wayne reveals his team of superhumans who are ready to lend their support to the cause of the Mankind Liberation Front. Secretly, though, Wayne speaks with John Jones, formerly the Martian Manhunter but now crippled in his abilities, in the hopes of finding out what his friend had sensed.

As Superman looks down upon the Earth with his telescopic vision checking for superhuman activity, Red Robin speaks with his former Teen Titans members about his growing concerns that Superman's plans would eventually fail. Norman McCay finds himself suddenly pulled from the spirit realm into reality to face a Superman who's wondering why he's here. McCay's only answer comes from Scripture: "...and the third part of the trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up...and the sun and the air were darkened...fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come." While Superman is confused over the cryptic message, Red Robin notices that a riot has broken out in the "Gulag". As McCay vanishes with the Spectre, Wonder Woman sends FlashGreen Lantern, and Power Woman to deal with the situation while she and Superman speak to the Secretary-General of the United Nations about their growing concerns of the "Gulag".

In the main office of the Mankind Liberation Front, Lex Luthor is pleased to report about the riot going on at the "Gulag" and now is ready to send Billy Batson into action to do his bidding. Bruce Wayne keeps Batson from calling upon Shazam, telling him he now knows what Luthor has done to him and his mind. With Luthor now feeling betrayed, Wayne tells his assembled team of superhumans to strike, instantly stopping most of Luthor's team, while Luthor attempts to escape, only to be confronted by an army of activated Batknights. Wayne now tries to reason with Batson as he himself flees, only to accidentally cause a flask of worms to break and cover him with worms. Scared at the sight, Batson calls upon Shazam and soon vanishes.

At the Green Lantern satellite, Wonder Woman dresses herself in golden eagle armor and girds her magical sword to her waist as Superman tries to reason with her on how to deal with the rioters. Then suddenly news comes from Green Lantern: the prisoners are now starting to breach the walls, and they have killed Captain Comet. Angered at the loss, Wonder Woman leads a team to go to the "Gulag" and force the prisoners to surrender or else. Seeing that she cannot get Superman to see that her way of dealing with the superhumans may be the right way, Wonder Woman gives him a farewell kiss before she departs.

At that, Superman races to Bruce Wayne's Batcave in a last-ditch effort to have his friend and former ally join him in his cause. All Wayne can tell Superman is that Captain Marvel has been brainwashed and is now heading for the "Gulag" to burst it wide open.

Superman races as fast as possible to reach the "Gulag" before Captain Marvel gets there, but it is too late. Lightning strikes the dome, allowing its residents to spill out to engage the Justice League team in an all-out battle. Superman himself is knocked out of the sky as Captain Marvel now engages him in a one-on-one confrontation.

Norman McCay sees that Armageddon has arrived.

CHAPTER IV

There were voices...and thunderings, and lightnings...and an earthquake. This was my dream...no more.

As Norman McCay and the Spectre watch, Armageddon has begun. The Justice League is locked in a battle with the rogue superhumans who have escaped the "Gulag" and are now out to wage war with them. Superman is fighting a hopeless battle with his equal Captain Marvel, who has been brainwashed by Lex Luthor. McCay pleads with the Spectre to make it stop, but the Spectre says he cannot take action yet, that there must be "a reckoning". All he can tell McCay is, "fear God, and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come."

Meanwhile, at the United Nations general assembly, the Secretary-General decides to take action to deal with the rogue superhuman problem once and for all: nuclear devices that are capable of destroying all metahuman life except for Superman. He sends forth the Blackhawk pilots to do the unthinkable job of delivering this destructive payload, and as he returns to his office and watches the planes take off, he slumps in his seat and hangs his head.

Back at the "Gulag", the Justice League seems hopelessly outnumbered and outmatched when Batman's team of superhumans shows up for assistance. Batman personally confronts Wonder Woman as she kills Von Bach before he crushes Zatara to death, suggesting that the real reason she was stripped of her duties and heritage on Paradise Island was that she was not strident enough with her mission. Angered, Wonder Woman turns on Batman and takes him up into the sky to personally deal with him when they both see the Blackhawk planes arriving with the bombs. Batman helps Wonder Woman see what her regaining her Amazon honor will cost her and others if she lets the bombs drop, and so she helps him take out the planes, though one of them manages to drop its payload down toward the warring crowd.

Back on Earth, Captain Marvel continually pelts Superman with his Shazam lightning bolts as he darts out of the way, until Superman finally grabs Captain Marvel as he calls upon Shazam's name, letting the lightning bolt turn Captain Marvel back into Billy Batson. He grabs Batson's mouth and clamps it shut while he tries to reason with Batson, making him see the urgency of a bomb being dropped that will destroy all superhumans except for Superman. He lets Batson make the decision of what's more important to him as he flies off to intercept the bomb. Batson speaks Shazam's name again and transforms into Captain Marvel, flinging Superman to the ground as he outraces the Man of Steel and intercepts the bomb first. He calls upon Shazam's name three times, and the lightning bolt ignites the bomb, consuming all superhumans in a mushroom cloud except for Superman and whoever was protected by the Green Lanterns' power rings.

Enraged by the massive loss of life by this extreme act, Superman flies off in a rage toward the United Nations and seals the doors shut, terrifying all the people within as he threatens to pull down the whole building on top of them. The Spectre takes Norman McCay to the United Nations building to try talking some sense into Superman, to make him see the humanity that he's ignored all those years believing that he was a god. Superman eventually relents, and joined with Batman, Wonder Woman, and the survivors of the battle, he forges a new relationship with the people to not solve their problems for them, but to solve their problems alongside them, not imposing their power among men but working to earn their trust. As the gathered heroes remove their masks and helmets as a symbol of good faith toward that end, Superman hangs the cape of Captain Marvel on a flagpole as a memorial.

At the conclusion of the tale, Batman turns his ruined Wayne Manor into a hospital, using Lex Luthor and most of the members of his Mankind Liberation Front as part of his "staff". Wonder Woman is restored to her rightful place as the princess of Paradise Island and now begins her role as a teacher of superhumans. Superman begins his work restoring the Kansas wasteland into a productive and fertile land for farming. And the Spectre, after showing Norman McCay his once human side as Jim Corrigan, returns the pastor to his church, where he now preaches a message of hope to his congregation.

One Year Later...

Superman and Wonder Woman meet with Batman in their civilian identities at the Planet Krypton restaurant, where they share news with each other about what's been going on in their lives over the past year. However, the real reason for this meeting is the news that Diana and Clark wanted to share with Bruce, which he easily figures out: she is pregnant with Clark's child. What catches Bruce off guard, though, is that Diana wants him to be the godparent, despite Bruce's record as a parent with his former wards. Both Clark and Diana see that Bruce can teach their child things they themselves cannot teach: lessons about mortality and morality from a man they both trust. As Clark and Bruce make their peace and then leave together with Diana to discuss what a future they will have with the child, Norman McCay is seen with Jim Corrigan talking about "the Spectre Platter".

EPISODE 31: KINGDOM COME, CHAPTERS I & II

The Last Sons meet with a Titan of the Superman canon - that of Kingdom Come!

It's been a long time coming, so both Connor-El and Rey-Zod take their time with this one...the intricate plot of Mark Waid and the sheer artistry of Alex Ross are analysed, cauterized and thoroughly digested...

(Courtesy of Wiki)

CHAPTER I

There were voices, thundering, lightning and an earthquake...and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood. There fell a great star from heaven, burning as if it were a lamp...and I beheld, and heard an Angel, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, WOE to the inhabiters of the earth.

The story begins with Wesley Dodds speaking with his pastor, Norman McCay, as he is reading from the book of Revelation in the Bible. Dodds has begun seeing visions related to that book and is trying to tell Norman about them. However, he dies before he can explain them.

While walking sometime after the funeral, Norman reflects on Dodds' life. Doods had once been the Sandman. During his later life, Dodds had been worried about the world's current superheroes, who lack the morals of their predecessors. As Norman reflects on this, a fight between some of the modern heroes fight and Norman hopes that mankind can out last these heroes.

These thoughts leaked into Norman's next sermon subconsciously. After the sermon, Spectre appear to Norman. Spectre was supposed to use Dodds for his host as he witnessed the events of the coming Armageddon, but has to use Norman because he is now having the visions.

They are first transported to a farm in Kansas (which turns out to be a holographic environment created in the Fortress of Solitude) where an aged Superman lives. Wonder Woman comes and tries to convince Superman that he needs to come out of retirement to help the world. Inside the house, they watch footage of a battle between a team of new heroes lead by Magog battling Parasite. Parasite pulled apart Captain Atom, causing a nuclear explosion that completely destroyed Kansas.

The Spectre than shows Norman that some of the old heroes still remain. The Flash still patrols Keystone CityHawkman protects the forests of the Pacific Northwest, and the Green Lantern watches Earth from an emerald city in orbit. Others, such as Aquaman, the Amazons, and the Legion of Super-Heroes abandoned the world to its fate. When asked about Batman, the Spectre shows that he's now using robots to patrol Gotham City.

The Spectre takes them to Metropolis, where they see some of the modern heroes having a shoot out on a suspension bridge and a tram full of innocents. The tram's cable was cut, but Superman was able to save it in time. Everyone was thrilled to see Superman save the day once more, but Norman was able to see this was just the beginning of the Armageddon.

CHAPTER II

And I saw the seven angels which stood before God, and another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer, and the angel took the censer and filled it with fire of the altar...and the seven angels prepared themselves to sound...

Norman McCay is now seeing a vision of "seven angels" bathed in the fire of what appears to be the torch of the Statue of Liberty. He and the Spectre are taken to where the vision leads them: to the Statue of Liberty where the Americommando, a gun-toting fascist, fires upon immigrants approaching Ellis Island with his Minutemen, warning them to leave America or else. He is soon diverted by a trio of robots, Red, White, and Blue, attacking him, but their personal battle is in the middle of innocents who they care very little for. This battle is interrupted by Superman...and he isn't alone: he is joined by seven others from the Justice League who have returned to duty to deal not only with them, but also with two psionics called the Brain Trust who were using this personal battle for their own ends. They were both rendered unconscious by the appearance of Red Robin, a former partner of Batman who has also joined Superman's team.

After the successful confrontation, Superman and his Justice League allies appear at the United Nations to address the press conference gathered there that they will deal with the rogue superhumans on the loose. However, the Secretary-General of the United Nations isn't confident of Superman's means to achieve their goals, and neither is Bruce Wayne, who retired his identity as Batman but not the desire to continue working as a hero, willing to join Superman's reformed Justice League for that purpose. Nonetheless, Superman and the Justice League press forward with their intended goal, negotiating with superhumans who are willing to join the cause and using force on those who oppose them.

Meanwhile, Lex Luthor has assembled a team of retired villains, calling themselves the Mankind Liberation Front, intending to use the battle between Superman's Justice League and the rogue superhumans to their own ends and purposes. Among them, Norman McCay and the Spectre see an adult Billy Batson as a servant to Lex Luthor, pleasantly giving Lex a shave.

At a nightclub where a group of random superhumans cavort, Superman gets their attention to deliver a message: that they should willingly join the League or else they will be dealt with. As Nightstar and Avia consider taking up Superman's offer to join him after he leaves, Oliver Queen shows up to offer them an alternative.

However, Superman is beginning to see more superhumans choosing to turn against the League rather than join them, so after some failed negotiation talks with Arthur Curry (who has surrendered his Aquaman identity to his former protege to take on his role as the king of Atlantis) and with Orion (who has killed his father Darkseid and has taken his place as the fearsome ruler of Apokolips), he turns to Mr. Miracle and his wife Big Barda for the answers.

Soon they find Magog standing on what's left of the Kansas landscape, futilely trying to rebuild, and Superman confronts him for the disaster he's caused. Magog blames Superman for the disaster, saying it all started when the Joker killed the Daily Planet staff, including Superman's wife Lois Lane. As the Joker was being brought into custody, Magog killed him with a blast from his energy staff. Superman brought Magog into court for his actions, but the judge ruled in favor of Magog, considering his actions "justifiable" and acquitting him. Rather than accepting Magog's challenge to fight him, Superman simply took off and was never seen until the present time. It is then Magog knew the real reason Superman took off: it wasn't that he feared Magog, but rather he feared that Magog was the kind of hero people wanted and the kind of future he represented. As Superman mockingly says to Magog, "You must be proud", he angrily blasts Superman with his staff before kneeling down in defeat, wanting Superman to kill him or do anything to take away the voices of a million ghosts haunting him.

While Superman and the Justice League are busy building "a stronghold of justice" using plans given to him by Mr. Miracle, Bruce Wayne is seen making an unseemly alliance with Lex Luthor's team of villains.

Episode 30 - Superman Year One: Part 308 Nov 201902:12:14

EPISODE 30: SUPERMAN YEAR ONE, FINAL CHAPTER

The Last Sons reunite to review the final chapter to the 3-part saga that is Superman Year One.

Things take a slight turn towards the end - for the better, or for the worst? You'll have to tune in to find out!

Connor-El and Rey-Zod also chat about the current Superman news of the week, and again get caught up with their thoughts on the latest iteration of Superman for the small screen.

We wrap it all up in a big, red, cape, right here!

SYNOPSIS:

(Written by Connor-El)

Lois Lane is searching for Superman underwater in a sub when territorial atlanteans fire on her craft which begins to take on water which quickly envelopes her. Superman comes to the rescue and carries Lois to the shore, where he carefully administers CPR. He then leaves her in a tree as NAVY seals are also tracking him, they attempt to capture him but he knocks them out with ease. A second team comes in and tries to use electricity on him, but that actually seems to empower him and he again disables them with ease. He goes back to Lois who has gone into Shock and finds her ID, Lois Lane of the Daily Planet and takes her to a hospital.

Time passes and Clark enrols in Kansas State University and graduates, with solid grades, nothing too perfect so he doesn't stand out. He is referred to Perry White of the Daily Planet so he heads to Metropolis. As soon as he arrives he rescues a child about to be hit by a truck much to the relief and amazement of everyone, then heads to the planet where he reads the paper and finds out there is a huge amount of crime in the city.

Clark is hired and sees Lois in the bullpen and realizes she knows his face as Superman so he goes to get a disguise for Clark Kent and finds an old fashioned hat and large glasses.

Clark constantly hears sirens, crime never stops so he proceeds to start fighting it. He stops a bank robbery, a drug operation, an abusive husband, a car-jacking operation and much more. Superman becomes the talk of the town.

At the Daily Planet Lois muses on Clark's similarity to Superman when a Hostage crisis arises at Lexcorp and Clark dons his Superman garb and flies off to deal assess the situation. He overhears Lois calling Clark useless which cuts him every time she ever says it.

The men behind the crisis put a gun to a little girls head and demand they be released with 1 billion and transport, but Superman intervenes and saves the girl (who barfs on him) and leaves her tucked in his cape on a roof and calls the police to come get her, then heads off and deals with the rest of the criminals. As he is doing so he realizes he is getting stronger every day.

As all this is happening Lois ties a line around herself and jumps down onto the building, snapping pictures of Superman taking out the bad guys. As the hostages flee Lex himself comes up, noting they are fleeing just on time, to go talk to Superman who he wants to control. Superman doesn't like or trust Lex and suspects him of setting this whole thing up, but Lex convinces him to come inside and take a look at something. Lex shows Superman a photo of the Batman who he says is a terrorist and an agent of chaos. Lex says Batman is rough, Superman is skeptical so Lex shows Superman some photos of Batman's victims.

(Written by Rey-Zod)

Aboard a ship in Gotham Harbour, Batman intervenes a black market arms shipment, which catches the eye of Lex Luthor.

Using the aggressive nature in which the Dark Knight metes out justice, Luthor turns the public against Batman, and cunningly thrusts the Man of Steel in the limelight as the one who can bring tranquility back to the city, and who can oppose the Dark Knight.

In doing so, Luthor hopes to manipulate and defeat his foes simultaneously, and it appears there's not much Superman can do about it.

Later, Batman catches wind of a meeting between Luthor and his own nemesis, The Joker, and it's after extracting more information from the Clown Prince, that Batman is able to further frustrate Luthor's plans by blowing up a downtown drugs lab. The incident is just the catalyst Luthor needs to pressure Superman into bringing Batman in, and upon their inevitable confrontation atop a roof in Gotham City, their battle begins.

Though Batman can't get the measure of Superman, just as Superman begins to retaliate, Wonder Woman intervenes and convinces that they all should be working together.

The Trinity confront Luthor in his office, and unable to withstand Wonder Woman's Lasso of Submission, Luthor reveals all - all his underhanded, sinister schemes for financial gain and power.

Added to this, Luthor also reveals a stunning secret that staggers Superman. Luthor speaks of the bottled city of Kandor and the evil Brainiac, and now with a new, all important purpose, Superman takes leave, innocently unaware of  Wonder Woman's burgeoning feelings towards him, and leaving her and Batman to deal with Luthor.

Year One ends with Superman leaving Earth, unsure how long he will be away from his adopted home planet, but if anything, more assured of his place in the universe, and the role and responsibility he now has as a powerful protector of justice.

Episode 27 - Enter...The Swamp Thing!29 Sep 201902:37:33

EPISODE 27: DC COMICS PRESENTS #85 - 'THE JUNGLE LINE'

The Last Sons are joined by very special guests Rob and John from The Swamp Things Podcast to take a deep dive into the heart of Louisiana and review 'The Jungle Line' - a tale of a very dejected Superman, and an abomination that only wanted to care for him.

Rob and John lend their expertise on this issue as well as discuss their overall love for The Swamp Thing....and their love for Superman too!

SHOW NOTES: SYNOPSIS:

(Courtesy of Wiki)

Clark Kent and Lana Lang attend a seminar by a Dr. Everett, who has discovered a meteorite bearing a patch of living fungus which managed to survive for years in a frigid vacuum without being destroyed. Clark wonders if perhaps the fungus originates from Krypton.

Thinking back, he recalls an entry in Rem-Ul's Almanac of Old Krypton which is dedicated to a fungus known as Bloodmorel, native to the Scarlet Jungle. The Bloodmorel grows and thrives within the Kryptonian bloodstream causing fever, bouts of incapacitation, hallucinations, chronic overexertion, and eventually, in 92% of cases, death.

Soon after the seminar, Clark notices that his powers are acting up. That night, he has hallucinations. Realizing that he has few options left, he returns to the Institute for Extra-terrestrial Studies as Superman, and borrows the meteorite from Dr. Everett. He uses his X-Ray vision to try to find an antidote, but that power fails him after a short time. Knowing that he has been infected, Kal-El understands that he will soon die.

He chooses to go south, to a place without indigenous super humans. He takes the meteor with him, just in case. He rents a car, and drives to Louisiana, but he falls asleep at the wheel, and the car crashes in flames. Delirious, he grabs the meteorite and wanders through the flames and swamp, hallucinating that he is in the Scarlet Jungle.

Swamp Thing comes across Clark's collapsed form. He notices the meteorite and the fungus on it, and uses his connection to The Green to try to establish contact with it. He quickly realizes that the fungus has an alien origin. He feels that the man before him has a familiar face, and after some investigation, he realizes that he has stumbled across Superman.

Superman wakes in a frenzy, and instinctively burns a hole through Swamp Thing's chest with his heat vision. Swamp Thing comes to understand that the most powerful creature on the planet has gone mad. Superman's insanity causes destruction to the swamp lands, and it becomes clear that all of the exertion will eventually kill him.

Desperately, Swamp Thing tries to make contact by linking himself to Superman via the fungus and The Green. He appears within Superman's hallucination, and at first, the man of steel is distrustful. Swamp Thing explains that Superman's fighting and overexertion are pushing his body beyond its limits. Finally, Superman realizes that he is succumbing to his illness. In order to help calm him, Swamp Thing submerges Superman within the calm of The Green, and he falls asleep.

Superman's fever breaks, and Swamp Thing leaves him. When Superman wakes, he shaves, and then takes the meteorite back to Metropolis, knowing that the fungus can no longer harm him. Superman is proud that he overcame it on his own, blissfully unaware of Swamp Thing's participation in his recovery.

The Last Sons heed the call of a listener request and take a look at a Superman & Green Lantern team-up! This time it's Kyle Rayner as Green Lantern and the pair face off against...you guessed it....Mongul!!

A fun-filled romp very much of the 90's....you only have to look at Superman's hair for proof!

Also included are our thoughts on the recently released Batman/Superman mini which sees the classic duo face off against The Batman Who Laughs!

All that, plus the usual ramblings from two very mad men...

SHOW NOTES: SYNOPSIS:

(#52, Written by Connor-El)

Kyle Rayner is the new Green Lantern and unbeknownst to him also the last. Him and his girlfriend Alex are on a beach practising. Alex, being a photographer takes photos of Kyle in the Green Lantern outfit to use for publicity. He also practices using his power ring on the beach involving making weapons, protection and much to Alex's anger Kyle using the ring to make her appear in a swimsuit, which results in Kyle getting a slap to the face.

Meanwhile at the Slab facility Mongul is enacting his plan for revenge against Green Lantern and Superman (not knowing that the Current Green Lantern Kyle is not the one he prviously fought) has started a riot to escape, with other villains like Major Force participating. After much bloodhed Mongul interrogates a guard to find out where his targets are. The guard says Green Lantern was spotted in LA, Mongul kills him, steals his jetpack and sets off to end Green Lantern.

Elsewhere homeless man who saw Kyle receive the ring of power gives a green substance he found to some strange organisation he believes is the government, and is killed for his trouble.

Back at the beach, Kyle and Alex and attacked by Mongul who after a brief struggle, has Kyle and Alex at his mercy....

(#53, Written by Rey-Zod)

With his life at the mercy of the relentless Mongul, Kyle Rayner (the new Green Lantern) is fortuitously saved from death by an intervening, and very mullet-y Superman.

With now both of them opposing the crazed Mongul, a colourful battle ensues which includes Kyle manifesting various complex objects from his ring (such as gauntlets, guns and lawnmowers!), much to the surprise of Superman. The Man of Steel is unfamiliar with this new iteration of the Green Lantern, but nevertheless he aides Kyle as Mongul retaliates again and again.

Surprisingly, the colour yellow does not seem to hinder the Green Lantern in the slightest and it's Kyle's unabashed confidence which finally defeats Mongul. Throwing all caution to the wind, Kyle manifests a speeding train to run into Mongul and render him unconscious.

Superman thanks Kyle and flies away with Mongul, taking him to an incarceration far, far away.

Meanwhile, a shady figure by the name of Mr. Deacon cuts deals with another mysterious figure as they discuss the matter of an unknown, green alloy - possibly extraterrestrial in nature.

The colourful foe is Major Force, and all leads point towards Kyle's girlfriend Alex De Witt. It appears Major Force is now after the green ring...and he'll remove any appendage necessary to get it!

Episode 25 - Superman Year One #227 Aug 201901:35:09

EPISODE 25: SUPERMAN YEAR ONE, ISSUE #2

The Last Sons return to continue their review of the latest offering of Superman origins, this time under the pen of Frank Miller and John Romita Jnr.!

This issue we see Clark entering the navy with vigorous training, before the story takes a turn and pits the young man of steel underwater, fighting for the right to be with Lori the Mermaid!

It's another massive issue to unwrap (or shuck??) - Tune in and find out whether the Last Sons give this their fins up!

SHOW NOTES: SYNOPSIS:

(Written by Connor-El)

Clark is excelling through Navy training when he is offered to join the SEAL training which he eagerly accepts. He beings to also excel at SEAL training, but starts getting distracted as he see's what appears to be mermaids off in the distance.

One night using his telescopic vision he see's the mermaids. He is joined by senior officer Jacob Kurtzburg who knows about the mermaids and warns Clark that while they are beautiful, he's seen men lured away to die by them.

Clark then goes on shore leave and gets into a bar brawl when he tries to stop new recruits from harassing someone. He is punished and made to clean the latrines with his toothbrush, and that night he again finds himself looking out at the see. He again hears the singing, but its a sad song this time. He decides to go to them, he dives into the ocean and starts breathing the water while exploring. While passing a whale he see's a mermaid, who laughs at him and dares him to chase her. He does so and comes across the fabled city of Atlantis, with a sub crashed into it leaving half the city in ruins.

He rebuilds the city for the merpeople much to their joy and the mermaid begs him to stay with her. He declines saying he is being called on the surface, but promises he will be back. As he leaves the mermaid confidently assures that he will be back, and she shall be his queen and they shall rule the seven seas.

Kurtzberg spots Clark returning to shore and knows he's been with the mermaids, suspecting that something is different about Clark.

In training that day clark is put through different combat situation training with a fellow recruit, Clark goes easy on him but his stomach goes sour when during a knife exercise he is praised for being a killing machine.

That night he is called with a bunch of other recruits to board a vessel that has been taken over by pirates and stop them since no-one else is in the area. They board the ship and fine the crew savagely murdered. They proceed to go in and kill the pirates, everyone but Clark who merely knocks the ones he encounters unconscious. The last pulls the pin on a grenade which Clark grabs along with the pirate, the recruits clear the room and Kurtzburg is telling Clark to give him a clear shot but cclark refuses to budge. The grenade goes off in Clark's hands, and everyone lives.

The next day Clark is called before a bunch of officers, who (in light of the bar brawl and now this) give him an honourable discharge, on the record it will essentially mean he couldn't cut it as a SEAL.

Morose, Clark is saluted in farewell by his fellow recruits. Outside as hes leaving, Kurtzburg approaches him and says that Clark is special. The world is on fire and its his Job to put the fires out. Clark swells with pride as they shake hands and then goes back to the sea.

He reunites with the mermaid who turns out to be called Lori Lemaris. She says in order to court her he has to meet her father Poseidon. Clark then dresses in the outfit Ma Kent made for him (the Superman outfit). Before he reaches the court he is confronted by an ancient construct, which after attacking him he wills to lead him to the court.

He gets a heroes welcome from most but Poseidon and Lori's other suitors. Poseidon shows nothing but disdain for him and considers him a bug to be squashed, and sends him out on numerous trials against various sea creatures and other atlanteans. Finally he sends a Kraken spawn, Clark lets himself be eaten then makes the Kraken spit him out right in front of Poseidon.

Poseidon wants Lori all to himself, to be his daughter and wife. He refuses to acknowledge Clark, and calls down the enormous mother Kraken, who despite all her might is unable to harm Clark. Shamed, Poseidon takes his leave and concedes, but vows revenge against Clark and the surface world.

Lori and Clark then rejoice, he could stay there forever and never leave...

Episode 24 - Superman & The Spectre: Where No Superman Has Gone Before!17 Aug 201901:55:37

EPISODE 24: DC COMIC PRESENTS #29 - Where No Superman Has Gone Before!

The Last Sons are joined by very special guest, Orion Petitclerc - Spectre aficianado - for a look at two appearances of The Spectre!

The first being the DC Showcase animated short; the other a team up with Superman in a classic tale of DC Comics Presents!

SHOW NOTES: SYNOPSIS:

(Written courtesy of Wiki)

Superman and Supergirl have successfully achieved the destruction of Warworld. But now Superman has to track down Supergirl, wherever she has gone. She should have rejoined him for now. Superman guesses Kara's collision with Warworld knocked her unconscious and her body was going too fast to stop. Superman calculates Supergirl's flight path and flies after her, building up speed to equal the unconscious Kara's, breaking through every physical barrier he has encountered before until he leaves his universe.

Kal-El is considering to turn around because his cousin can't have traveled so far when he spots her. Superman is about to reach her when The Spectre shows up all of sudden and knocks him back into his universe.

Superman gets angry but the Spectre merely warns him that he must stop because the realm before him is one which no living mortal may enter. Unable to persuade the Spectre to let him by, Superman tries to fight his way past him, but his powers are totally ineffectual against those of the Ghostly Guardian.

Seeing Superman won't listen, the Spectre decides Kal-El must be educated about his limitations. The Spectre forces him to sit through visions of the demise of Krypton, which he's again powerless to prevent, and Death taking his father Jonathan again, which Superman is unable to stop.

Finally, the Spectre conjures up a dark version of Superman. While the doppelganger pummels Superman mercilessly, the Spectre tells it's pure, unadulterated power without conscience or remorse that can destroy him if he allows it to run amok. Superman is losing until he realizes that "evil" Superman is just a manifestation of the arrogant and headstrong attitude he has been displaying of late.

The evil Superman fades away and Superman apologizes to The Spectre. Then The Voice, the Master of the Spectre, speaks up to tell Superman that admitting his own foolishness is the first step to become truly wise.

Superman is amazed, but the Spectre explains it was the Voice who commanded him to stop Superman. Even if Superman didn't mean any harm, he was going where no living beings are allowed to go. Superman pleads with him to save his cousin, and The Spectre materializes an unconscious Supergirl in his arms, saying that all Superman had to do was ask. The Spectre hands Kara to Kal-El and departs. Superman reflects power untempered with conscience is meaningless and thanks the Spectre, but he realizes he's already gone.

Supergirl, who has been unconscious during her entire journey into the realms beyond death, wakes up right then. She asks what has happened to her, a tale Superman narrates as they head back towards Earth.

Episode 23 - Warworld! Mongul Strikes Pt 2!04 Aug 201901:19:45

EPISODE 23: DC COMIC PRESENTS #28 - WARWORLD!

We continue our review of the DC Comics Presents... series and arc featuring a Super team-up and the dastardly machinations of Mongul!

Connor-El and Rey-Zod return to discuss the latest news for Superman and go through the second part to this cosmic tale!

SHOW NOTES: SYNOPSIS:

(Written courtesy of Wiki)

Superman and Supergirl streak through the galaxy towards the place where Warworld lies in hiding. Unfortunately they're too late: Mongul has already made off with the satellite. Kal feels discouraged but Kara states perhaps Mongul can't be stopped now, but they'll certainly try.

Supergirl uses her microscopic vision to find the trail of subatomic particles left behind by the satellite's exhaust. Upon figuring out Mongul is heading straight for the Raydor Galaxy, both cousins follow the trail.

Superman and Supergirl finally spot Warworld and get astounded: it's not only larger than a white dwarf star but also able to withstand its gravitational pull. Both heroes decide to check the satellite out from far away using their telescopic vision. They look over the countless weapons dotting the planet's landscape, the mountain-sized missiles, the vast computer system forming the artificial planet's core, the mountain of Warzoon graves just outside of the capital city, the command console... and finally Mongul. Superman is beginning to think he shouldn't have gotten his cousin involved, but Supergirl replies she's already involved, and it's time to pay Mongul a visit.

Mongul walks into the control door. Warworld's alarm system has been activated and he can guess who has triggered it. He sits on the command chair and puts on the headset which mind-links him with Warworld. As Mongul gets ready to test his new weapon on the Kryptonian duo, he recalls how he was overthrown by his former subjects in the past, and swears he'll not be defeated again.

Superman and Supergirl are advancing on Warworld when Mongul starts shooting his massive missiles on them. Both cousins soon learn they can't take more than one hit of those weapons. Nonetheless, Superman figures out a way to win. Both Kryptonian heroes streak towards Warworld, forcing Mongul to launch more weapons. As they evade the macro-laser beams and blast the humongous missiles from a safe distance, Superman explains his plan: forcing Mongul to go all out. Reflection upon the graveyard spreading out of the city, he realized the Warzoon must have died one by one. And there's only one thing on that entire satellite capable of killing the Warzoons one at a time: the control helmet in the command console. Supergirl agrees the massive energy drain must be more than a mind can bear.

As they talk, Mongul indeed feels the helmet control hurting his mind until he passes out. Warworld ceases fire and both cousins are breathing sighs of relief when the satellite resumes its attack, its defenses now operating automatically.

Superman comes up with a plan. While he keeps the satellite's defense systems focused on him, Supergirl flies out a great distance in space, then pours on full speed, achieves a velocity greater than she ever has before, and punches straight through Warworld, destroying and deactivating its computer core. She comes out on the other side and hurtles headlong into space, unable to stop herself.

Superman bursts through the planet's surface straight after, reaches the core computer and programs the planet to destroy itself. He also intends to grab Mongul before getting out, but the alien dictator has somehow escaped. Superman flies off before Warworld explodes.

Superman feels satisfied. The universe has been saved. Perhaps the Largas will rest in peace now. And perhaps J'onn will someday forgive him.

Right now he faces another problem, though: What has happened to his cousin?

Episode 22 - Mongul Strikes! The Key That Unlocked Chaos21 Jul 201901:10:55

EPISODE 22: DC COMIC PRESENTS

NOTE: THIS WAS RECORDED BEFORE SDCC

The Last Sons are back with another comic book review for your listening pleasure!

Connor-El and Rey-Zod turn back time to look at an 80's print of DC Comics Presents, showcasing Superman against not only The Martian Manhunter, but one of our faves - Mongul himself!

Part 1 of a two part arc....get your crystal keys out and start 'er up!

SHOW NOTES: SYNOPSIS:

(Written courtesy of Wiki)

Superman is lounging in his apartment when a holographic face shows up in the middle of his living room. The intruder identifies himself as Mongul, transmitting his message from his starship via scrambled signal, and he wants Superman to retrieve a specific item. When Superman asnwers he isn't his errand boy, Mongul retorts he isn't asking him-- he's ordering him. In order to ensure Superman's cooperation he has kidnapped and miniaturized Jimmy OlsenLois Lane and Steve Lombard, who are trapped in a transparent energy cube. Superman doesn't want to believe it, but a quick super-vision sweep reveals his three co-workers aren't in Metropolis.

Mongul claims if Superman retrieves a crystal key locked away in an isolated crypt, his friends will be returned to him unharmed. Otherwise they'll be returned in pieces. Seeing no option but to play along with Mongul for the moment, Superman agrees to retrieve the key. Mongul reveals it's hidden on the fifth planet of the Cygnus system. Superman angrily points out the fourth planet is New Mars, where Martian Manhunter currently resides, and he isn't surprised at all that Mongul is well aware of it.

Superman angrily takes off for New Mars, closely followed by a Mongul's probe. He knows he can't let Mongul have that key, regardless what he wants him for, but he'll have to play his game until he can find a way to free his friends.

As Superman approaches his destination, his arrival is noted by Martian Manhunter.

Superman scours the planet, which is completely empty, except for a solitary and apparently unguarded crypt. Superman touches down, wondering why Mongul doesn't claim that key himself, when J'onn J'onzz arrives to stand in his way. J'onn warns that planet is off-limits to everyone. Superman apologises for trespassing and explains he just wants to collect the crystal key and leave. J'onn replies the entire universe depends on it remaining there.

Several centuries ago, existed a savage, war-mongering race called the Warzoon that devastated the half of the known universe. At one point, the Warzoon built a giant mobile weaponized satellite equipped with weapons capable of obliterating entire worlds, and called it Warworld. Notheless, the Warzoon race died mysteriously before they could put WarWorld to use. Later the artificial planetoid was found by a peaceful race called the Largas. Since they couldn't bring themselves to destroy it for unknown reasons, they reprogrammed its defenses to prevent anyone from setting foot on the satellite. Wielding the crystal key is the only way to penetrate Warworld's defenses because its defensive systems are nullified by the key's sonic vibrations.

Though, the Largas were a dying race. Thus, several centuries later, the last Largas entrusted the Martians with keeping the key before dying. And Martian Manhunter's sworn to protect the key.

Superman understands J'onn's position, but he reiterates he needs the key and is sure he can handle the situation. J'onn disagrees and attacks him. Much to his regret, Superman knocks him out after a hard fight. Superman enters the crypt and retrieves the key, wondering whether he'll be able to protect it. He walks back outside to find Mongul is already waiting for him, his vessel orbiting the planet. He has brought the prison-cube containing Superman's friends and demands the key in exchange for it. Superman, though, refuses to hand the item over to him. Mongul tries to force him by shrinking the cube progressively, but Superman doesn't yield.

Suddenly, the Mongul's cube controls get shattered and the energy prison dissolves, freeing Lois, Jimmy and Steve. Mongul blames Superman, even though Kal-El is so surprised as him, and blasts him away. Right then Martian Manhunter, who had just broken the cube's controls, becomes visible again and lunges at Mongul. J'onn already stopped him from stealing the key once in the past and he intends to drive him back again, but Mongul shakes both Martian Manhunter and Superman off and teleports away.

J'onn is furious and berates a seriously contrite Superman for being too arrogant and overconfident to listen. J'onn then demands to know what Superman intends to do about Mongul seizing the crystal key. Superman replies first of all he'll fly his friends back to Earth. Then he intends to recruit help, track Mongul down and recover the key... or die trying.

Episode 21 - Superman: Year One05 Jul 201902:24:11

EPISODE 21: SUPERMAN YEAR ONE

The Last Sons reunite for what would have to be a seminal run for Superman's canon!

The pair of Aussie Kryptonians take a look at Frank Miller and John Romita Jr's polarising first issue of SUPERMAN: YEAR ONE - a book many a Super-fan has either excitedly anticipated or approached with caution.

Does it live up to the hype?

Check out what the boys have to say, amongst other random chat including Connor's less than salubrious stint in High School, and Rey's lament at missing the Bat-Boat!

SHOW NOTES: SYNOPSIS:

(Written by Rey-Zod)

Fleeing from planetary Armageddon, the last son of Krypton crash lands into a small rural town of Smallville. A humble and kind couple take in the alien child and raise him as best they can, despite the extraordinary abilities he displays.

As the young boy (now named Clark) grows up, he discovers his remarkable abilities of heat vision, flight and super senses and it's these abilities which he slowly learns to control in order to prevent hurting those around him and himself.

Time goes by and the young Clark eventually attends the local school, Smallville High. He finds  kinship with a motley band of students who lie on the fringes of acceptance within school life. It's the local bullies which make life difficult for Clark and difficult for him to restrain himself. Guidance from his past life and his upbringing from the Kents manage to restrain Clark and even though he manages to keep a level head and not unleash upon the cruel bullies, Clark lands himself in trouble and in the Principal's office.

Feeling even more alien than ever, Clark soon finds that the bullies are unrelenting and continue to assault his hapless friends. Lana Lang approaches Clark (of whom both harbour a secret admiration for each other) and reveals that she has photographic evidence which can implicate the bullies once and for all. She and Clark organise a rendezvous later that evening to further discuss how to nab the troublemakers and unbeknownst to them, one of Clark's friends overhears them and informs the juveniles of their plans.

That evening, Lana is tricked into leaving her house and is ambushed by the motley crew, intent on making her pay. Clark arrives to save her and immediately after he reveals his true self to Lana by flying her in his arms up into the sky, consolidating the feelings they have for one another.

Clark and Lana share happy times together and Clark even starts to relax his restraint in public as he yearns to break free and show everyone just exactly what he can do. This results in Clark uncharacteristically winning a football match almost single handedly and looking on from the bleachers, Clark's father, Jonathan is not pleased.

Jonathan is unhappy with Clark's use of his powers for personal gain and advises Clark to put his abilities to greater use.

Coupled with a curiosity to see the world, Clark enlists in the Navy, leaving his parents, Lana and Smallville behind.

Chapter 1: In Which He Leaves Smallville As a Boy

Clark leaves Smallville and arrives at the big smoke, Metropolis. Having left his good parents Jonathan and Martha, Clark ventures into Metropolis to make a start for himself, and to hopefully land a job at a newspaper office.

Soaking in the ambience of his run down apartment, Clark soon encounters a huge fire in an adjacent building. There's no need however to intervene and Clark awkwardly walks away as the fire department manage the curious crowd and blazing fire.

Overhearing a conversation from some journalists the next day, Clark discovers that the fire the previous night may well be  a result of arson. This pushes Clark to investigate so in the dead of night, he dresses up in black and flies off to the smouldering building site to see what he can find. Unfortunately he's not the only one there, and it's a close encounter with the police and one Lois Lane, that exposes Clark for the first time as a Flying Man. Though not identified, this alien figure now slowly begins to be a person of interest for the media and citizens of Metropolis.

Worried that his fingerprints may still be on a piece of evidence found at the arson site and in police custody, Clark makes the error of breaking in to the station to wipe his prints clean. All this does is further the speculation about the Flying Man, as he is again caught on camera.

As yet unaware of his capture on security camera, Clark goes about trying to impress the editor in chief of the Metropolis Daily News with a sensational article he had written, when all of a sudden the building to the Metropolis Daily News explodes with a bang!

This time, Clark has no option but to expose himself once and for all in front of the populace, and though he does good in saving many lives from the burning wreckage, the citizens of Metropolis are still wary of him - an alien figure with awesome power.

Clark hears it all from his apartment - how some are excited for his appearance, whilst others are cautiously skeptical.

In a brief lack of faith, Clark sends his costume back to Smallville, much to Jonathan and Martha's surprise.

Chapter 2: In Which He Must Choose Between His Fears

Clark reflects on having left Smallville as he grinds out his new found job as a cleaner. He has, however, found good friends in fellow cleaners Sammy, Jose and Luis. The three have a spare ticket to the baseball after one of their mates, Diego cancels and Clark is there at the right time and place to accept their offer.

It's not long too before Clark learns of the true heart of humanity in the face of adversity, and he quietly admires Jose's love of his son and what he'd do to make ends meet.

Later in the day, it's at the Daily Planet that Clark attempts to gain an interview with Perry White but it proves unsuccessful. It's not all futile as Clark soon learns from Perry White chatting, that the the Mayor of Metropolis, Jessicks may be considering Martial Law for the city for an unknown reason. Having heard the conversation between Perry and his colleagues, Clark decides to investigate.

It's at the Mayor's office that Clark spies that there is a terrorist amongst the city, threatening chaos to the city unless their demand of $5 Billion dollars is met. Despite reservations from his peers that the threat must be met head on,the Mayor decides to introduce a tactical response unit to defend the city against the terrorists.

Wallace Colmes...leader of the National Guard announces that martial law will commence at 8pm on that night.

The terrorists catch wind of this and respond in the most vicious way imaginable, through bombings and in this instance it's LexCorps who feel the brunt of it. Clark rushes in and amidst the carnage, he helps as much as he can...again with some citizens misconstruing it for malevolent rather than benevolent motives.

Clark has a crisis of faith again at how he is received by Metropolis and finds himself at his wits end. He returns to the streets to hear that the Mayor ruefully concedes defeat to the terrorists, and in the final stake through the heart, the Mayor mistakenly feels the Flying Man to be part of the terrorism.

All is but lost to Clark, until he sees a figure slowly emerge form the crowd...it's Lois Lane...and she aims to fight for Metropolis…!

(Written by Connor-El)

Chapter 3: In Which He Asks the Question That Will Change His Life

Clark is exuberant that star reporter Lois Lane believes in him, and eavesdrops her defending him to Perry White. Perry agrees to let her write the article on the flying man saving people in exchange for her getting an exclusive interview with someone she doesn't like at all.

Clark then reminisces about the time he saw a travel special on Metropolis and knew he would move there, as well as Ma and Pa making his costume with Pa telling him how excited he is at Clark's potential as a force for good.

Clark then goes to work and pays Jose back for his ticket to the game, after work he see's the front page headline of the daily planet "Flying Man Saves City by Lois Lane" and is so ecstatic he buys up all copies of the paper. Heading to the park (and saving a mother and her child with his super breath on the way) he begins to brainstorm ideas for his big article to impress Perry White at the Daily planet, mostly ideas to do with a newcomer in Metropolis then he settles on How the Unknown Impacts people. He then uses his telescopic vision to look in on Lois and Perry and sees Perry telling Lois its time for the interview and orders her to go or her current story is dead.

Clark, being curious about who this is, puts on his mask and follows Lois to this press conference and arrives at the airport where he overhears Jimmy and Lois talk about the fact that she once dated this man. The man as it turns out, is Lex Luthor who proclaims he has come back to Metropolis after 5 to save it from these terrorists and the huge increase in crime. During this conference a swarm of missiles from the terrorist that nearly block out the sky head toward the conference to the horror of Clark.

Chapter 4: In Which He Becomes A Man

As the missiles head closer to Lex Luthors press conference a voice comes from the saying they warned Luthor not to come back and now that he has Metropolis will pay the price. Lex then activates a bunch of anti-missile turrets and with Clark's help they are all destroyed.

The Media later reports that Lex Luthor saved the day much to Lois' anger as no credit was given to the Flying Man. As Clark watches an interview with Lex in his apartment he comes to a realisation, why did Lex have anti missile turrets in the airport? Clark investigates further and finds a radio transmitter and finds out the anti-missiles were activated manually. He then heads over to the Lexcorp media building and listens in hearing Lex planned the trip to Metropolis a month ago, which was before these troubles started. He then heads to the daily planet and leaves a note on Lois' desk thanking her for believing in him. At the entrance of the planet he greets her as Clark Kent and informs her of his discoveries over a cup of coffee, namely that he believes due to the fact that ther turrets were manually activated and Luthor planned this trip a month before the bombings that Luthor has set the whole thing up, killing innocent people so that he can gain more power and influence in Metropolis, and back the candidate John Wicks.

Lois is fascinated by Clark with his big athletics build but his humble nature which isnt an act, and seems to relish in the idea she might have a rival so she promises to submit the story he writes to Perry White if she likes it. They then split up, Lois going to Lex's recently fired pilot and Clark to check City Filings.

Lois meets with the Pilot and then confronts Luthor, telling him her theory that he wants his candidate John Wicks in Government so that the Government will by his weapons defence systems and has set this whole thing up, also mentioning she used to write his speeches and knows a pre-written speech when she hears one, which his supposed spontaneous reaction to the terrorist attack was. Lex's seething reaction essentially proves Lois is right, and even if she can't prove anything he will wish he never left Europe.

Clark meanwhile tracks the radio transmitter signal with his super-hearing and finds a warehouse full of the terrorist rockets, which are obviously Luthors. Luthor blows up all the rockets hoping to get rid of not only the evidence but the flying man. Clark, resolved to stop Luthor first flies to Smallville and gets his costume from the Kents.

He then confronts Lex, whom after initially denying everything panics and fires a gun at Clark. Clark says he will be watching him 24/7, just waiting for him to slip up or make any small mistake so he can take him down. He leaves and a seething Luthor states "The world has just changed, and I'm going to change it back".

Back at the planet, Clark gives Lois his story, an interview with the flying man. Lois taken aback because Clark got the flying mans exact mission statement without any questions about who he was or where he came from. She then gives the story to Perry and tells him to hire Clark. Lois decides the flying man needs a name...

The next day. The citizens of metropolis carry a new paper with a front page read "What Superman Wants from us" as Superman himself flies overhead.

Superman (Volume 2) #44 (Dark Knight Over Metropolis, Part One: Green Death in Crime Alley)

Amanda McCoy is a disgruntled ex-employee of Lexcorp who after being fired for suggesting Clark Kent was Superman, decided to prove to herself that her theory was correct. After attacking Clark Kent with the Kryptonite ring she stole from Lex Luthor to prove he was Superman, Amanda Mcoy is scared she has killed him and runs away from the abandoned cemetery where they met. She is then abducted and killed by thugs while walking home, the ring falling through a sewer grate....

Jose Delgado aka Gangbuster is currently acting as Cat Grants bodyguard due to her being marked by Intergang. They and her son Adam exit the movies while a shadowy figure on the rooftops tails them (as well as an undercover cop acting as extra protection). Despite Jose's protests, Cat opts to take a shortcut through a dark alley where they are ambushed by an invisible assailant. Jose manages to dispatch the assailant while the shadowy figure is revealed to be Superman himself. Who interrogates this so called "Blindspot" and warns him to leave Cat Grant alone.

Meanwhile at the morgue, Police Inspector Henderson is informed of the body of a woman (Amanda McCoy but they don't know that) that was found battered and beaten and left for 2 weeks. Henderson is disgusted that something like this could happen outside of suicide slum, and worries that Metropolis is going the way of Gotham, where we cut to to find a statement by Commissioner Gordon that violent Crime is on the rise in Gotham.

The Batman comes across a homeless man being mugged and steps in, stopping the crook but unfortunately the homeless man is dead from a heart attack. Inside the homeless mans box, Batman discovers a ring with a green radioactive gem that seems to glow...

Meanwhile at Lexcorp, Luthor is furious to find that his kryptonite ring has been stolen right from under his nose, while Intergang plan the next attack on Cat Grant and decide to get Superman out of the way by baiting him with Lois Lane and Clark Kent. They make plans to attack the upcoming Journalists banquet which is being hosted by Luthor.

Batman studies the ring in his batcave and has tracked it back to Metropolis, where he decides to attend the journalist banquet he was invited to so he can meet with Clark Kent (they know each others identities at this point) since he will be working in his city.

Meanwhile Superman flies to his fortress in the Antarctic and fixes the damage done by the Eradicator, rebuilding the statue to his kryptonian parents. He then flies back to Metropolis to meet Lois Lane for a date as Clark Kent.

(Written by Connor-El)

Adventures of Superman #467 (Dark Knight Over Metropolis, Part Two: Taken to the Grave)

After his date with Lois Clark finds a note left by Batman in his apartment requesting that they talk, Superman flies through Metropolis pondering what trouble is happening in his city that Batman himself has appeared.

Batman meanwhile is breaking into the morgue where a Jane Doe (McCoys body) is held as it has slight radiation poisoning and Batman suspects she held the ring before the homeless man. During his examination he is caught by a cop who says they don't tolerate his kind in Metropolis. Batman says the law takes too much time then asks the officer what he is going to do exactly to stop him, shoot him in the back? Then walks away.

Superman heres the alarms from the morgue going off and flies over, seeing a shadowy figure on a rooftop on the way, he confronts them. It turns out to be Jose Delgado in his Gangbuster attire, watching Cat Grants apartment from the rooftop. Superman and Gangbuster then talk where Superman compliments him but they reminisce all the times he's been dangerously injured. Batman then shows up and says if Gangbuster couldn't stand the heat, he wouldn't be there. Batman then says he needs to talk to Superman alone, and they depart with Gangbuster reflecting on Batman being just a normal guy like him. Jose is then ambushed by two villains from intergang; Chiller, who can take other peoples forms and disguises himself as Cat Grant, as Shockwave brings down the roof beneath him and knocks out Delgado, capturing him and taking him out of the picture.

Meanwhile batman informs him of his investigation, and shows Superman a picture of the body whom he identifies as the woman who cornered him and revealed his identity. He informs batman that the ring she used can kill him and has every reason to believe Luthor is mixed up in all this. Batman doesn't tell Superman he has the ring as he thinks it might come in handy, they then head to Lexcorp together and break in, despite Supermans grumblings about breaking and entering, which Batman points out will be much more effective than Superman trying to intimidate Luthor into giving him what he wants.

Superman shorts out all the cameras with his heat vision and they hack into a computer near Luthors vault. They discover that the woman is Amanda McCoy and they find her address, while Superman worries if Luthor knows who he really is. They then leave before Luthors guards arrive and make a plan to go to his banquet, then McCoys address.

At the Banquet Clark, Lois and Bruce are socialising when Luthor shows up and meets Bruce for the first time. Lex brings up how Clark saved his life when intergang attacked a few months ago, and speak of the devil Intergang arrive again and start trashing the banquet, killing people indiscriminately while looking for Clark and Lois. Lex pushes Clark out of the way of incoming fire and tells him to consider his debt repaid.

Clark heats up the pool with his heat vision to create enough steam for him to change into Superman, and Bruce also changes into batman. Superman and Batman take care of Intergang and realise it was a diversion and that they must have Cat Grant, so they both set off to find her.

Chill has kidnapped Cat Grant disguised as Jose Delgado, and Shockwave gets the order to execute Delgado and make it look like an accident, he then causes the building to fall on them.

(Written by Rey-Zod)

Action Comics #654 (Dark Knight Over Metropolis, Part Three: Deadly Covenant)

After the abduction of Cat Grant, both Superman and Batman scour the city only to come across the sounds of a crumbling building not far away.

Superman tends to the wreckage whilst Batman chooses to check out Grant's apartment for clues to her whereabouts.

Superman is momentarily stricken with horror as he finds Delgado, aka Gangbusters, head gear amongst the debris, but Delgado proves to be a hard man to kill and Superman is relieved to see him alive and well up high in the adjacent building's fire escape.

Delgado recalls his narrow escape but the two are suddenly distracted with the assassin, Shockwave's appearance as he stumbles out of the debris. Shockwave is adamant to finish the job he was contracted to, but he faces a blue and red wall in the form of the Man of Steel.

Meanwhile, Chiller (the assassin who abducted Grant using his skill of disguise) brings his hostage to an outlaying industrial park, where Dr Moon and his cohorts have set up shop.

Dr Moon has been employed by Intergang to facilitate a brainwashing of Cat Grant, in order for her to provide a favourable testimony to Morgan Edge's court case.

Brainwashing is in fact not the correct term, with Dr. Moon preferring the term, 're-programming'.

Both Chiller and Dr. Moon conspire behind the Intergang members' backs after a slight altercation concerning recent events. Dr. Moon convinces Chiller to put up with Intergang's idiosyncracies but before anything else could be said, both Batman and Superman crash onto the scene.

Whilst the legendary duo stave off the Intergang thugs, Dr. Moon persists with his plan to re-program Cat Grant. Fortunately, Gangbuster appears and knocks Dr. Moon out before any damage can be done to the shaken Grant.

Intergang briefly gain the upper hand with Superman, but ultimately the caped heroes prove too much for them. Gillespie and Mannheim (two of Intergang's big wigs) monitor the situation via a camera feed and concede that Morgan Edge is beyond help.

Whilst Gangbuster and Superman are left to clean up the scene, it's not long before Batman's disappearance is noticed. Leaving a note pinned to the unconscious Dr. Moon cryptically leading Superman on, Superman flies off to catch up with the Dark Knight.

His travels lead the two to Amanda McCoy's apartment, where her diary explains some previous events and puts some mysteries to rest. She is indeed the unidentifiable corpse, and her involvement with Superman includes the theft of Luthor's Kryptonite ring, the danger of Superman's secret identity getting out, and his encounter with her in the cemetery.

Batman reveals he has the Kryptonite ring, gives it to Superman, and recommends that Superman should take the evidence from Amanda's apartment, which exposes him as Clark Kent.

As time goes by, Edge's court case ends in a guilty conviction and the mystery of the unidentified dead woman is revealed as Amanda McCoy. Back at Wayne mansion, Bruce is greeted by a visit with Superman. Having invited himself to the Batcave, Superman opens up on the respect he has for the Dark Knight and bestows upon him the honour of safe guarding the Kryptonite ring...as he states, "I Want the Means to stop me, to be in the hands of a man I can trust with my life"

Metropolis Mailbag

(Synopsis Written by Rey-Zod)

Superman has fought many dangerous and massive threats to humanity but there's not many villains which he is more hesitant to face than what lies ahead during the holiday season.

Mr. Simpkins and Lois Lane meet Superman a couple of days before Christmas and it's at the Metropolis Post Office that they lead the Man of Steel towards the room filled with letters addressed to him, seeking his help.

The cries for help are rich and varied with some appearing more legitimate than others. A citizen writes in proposing a business deal to Superman by which both can achieve financial game; another curious writer ponders whether Superman's strength could convert coal to diamonds - again, proposing that both he and Superman could gain from this.

It's a letter written from a survivor of Auschwitz which piques Superman's interest and upon reading her letter pleading to be reunited with her only surviving family member, he wastes no time in making her acquaintance.

In Chicago, Mrs. Agnes Schomer is greeted at the door by the Kryptonian and to her astonishment, he whisks her to Germany where she is reunited with her sister, Ellie amidst tears of joy.

Returning to the stockpile of letters, Superman comes across another letter which tugs at his heart strings. This time, it's from a young boy, Terry Baldwin, who hopes Superman can do the impossible and save his Dad from a terminal brain tumour. Struck with sympathy, Superman decides to go to the hospital in Salt Lake City to let the boy know  that he unfortunately can't do anything to help him. He leaves Lois to sift through the letters whilst he ventures out to face the music.

It's a tragic and sorrowful sight when Superman arrives all too late - Terry's Dad has passed away and Terry - the young boy who relied so much in Superman - is left bitter and hateful towards our hero. Superman explains that the situation was out of his hands and Terry's Mum, Mrs. Baldwin comforts the inconsolable child. Before leaving, Superman makes a suggestion, ensuring his suggestion is sensitively handled - and asks Terry's Mum to consider that her deceased husband's organs be donated in order to help others less fortunate.

Superman indeed had come across a letter from a woman in desperate need of a heart transplant and leaves Terry's Mum to make the important and emotional decision.

A small Christmas miracle is achieved when in Kansas City, Gloria is given a new lease on life with a donated heart from Terry's deceased Dad. With organs compatible, it allows Gloria to live and Superman to yet again marvel at the compassion of the human spirit through Mrs. Baldwin's donation.

One final gesture for Christmas is realised when Lois Lane reminds Superman of a party hosted by the Daily Bugle for disadvantaged kids. Gifts are short this year so it requires a bit of creative thinking to make things special for the children who are in need of something positive and reaffirming.

Superman pulls some strings (not the least, being from Bruce Wayne,  Emil an acquaintance and some zoo animals) and the children are greeted with none other than Santa on the roof of the Daily Planet. Emil takes the reins as Santa, whilst Superman dresses in black and props the two innocent reindeer into the sky, to the childrens' delight!

Yet again, the Man of Steel brings the holiday cheer to those who need it most.

After all the adventures as Superman, Clark Kent returns home to his apartment, only to be met with an invitation from Elizabeth Lana Lang and Peter Joseph Ross, announcing their marriage.

It leaves Clark in a state of disbelief, no doubt spring boarding him into the dramas and adventures ahead!

Benefaction of Peace

(Synopsis Written by Connor-El)

It's dusk on Christmas eve and a man named George stands on the top of the Daily Planet building getting read to jump. He's interrupted by Lois Lane who asks what he's doing. George replies his wife left him and the holidays will be too empty without her so he has decided to end it. Lois says that you can't let loneliness kill you, and tells him that in an interview Superman said that even he gets incredibly lonely. She proceeds to tell him about an early Christmas in Superman's career where he felt most alone.

Years in the past, Superman rescues a construction worker falling from a building. It turns out the reason he is working on Christmas day is for the overtime pay to get his family gifts, a feeling Superman can't relate to as he is spending his 1st Christmas in metropolis alone.

He has left the Daily Planet Christmas party since it was difficult to deal with, so he has decided to give Metropolis a completely crime free Christmas by stopping every single crime no matter how small. Superman has been at this for hours, when he hears yet another alarm go off and stops a group of surprised crooks robbing a Jewellery store, thinking it would be an easy score on Christmas day with no-one around. One is getting away when a lady putting out her trash stops one of them with a trashcan, then goes back inside. Superman picks up the crook thinking he has just tripped over and knocked himself out and is glad that he's caught a break.

But breaks are few and far between as Superman goes from taking out renegade robots, stopping purse snatchers and out of control trains. But Superman is so focused on these tasks that he doesn't realize at nearly every scene there is everyday heroism for the people he has sworn to protect, whether it's a neighbour dialling 911, or a bystander triggering a fire alarm.

That evening at a feed the homeless charity dinner, a disgruntled business partner in the charity who has gone bankrupt and holds a gun to the spokes model. Superman arrives and melts the gun with his heat vision but the man reveals a bomb strapped to his chest which can be triggered by intense heat or the dead mans switch he holds. Superman is at a standstill with him when a bystander named Milton put his thumb and holds down the switch while Superman knocks him out with a flick of his finger. Superman then holds down the trigger himself while everyone evacuates and waits for a bomb squad.

Superman thanks Milton for his help and vice versa, and Milton says everyone is in this together and you'd have to be crazy to try and keep the city safe alone. Superman smiles and agrees, when Milton asks Superman to have Christmas dinner with him, an offer which Superman accepts.

As Lois finishes her story, she says being alone is indeed difficult but life is what you make of it. The man slowly climbs down off the ledge and Lois mentions she has a free few hours and offers to have coffee with him, so they can talk more. To which George gratefully accepts..

The Journey to Conquer the Universe begins with but a single step

With Superman defeated and at his Mercy, Brainiac takes him to his skullship to be analysed for any secrets his physiology may hide. Meanwhile the natives of Systus 2 wonder if they are free, to which Brainiac responds with a violent blast from his skullship, scattering the survivors.

Brainiac carries a paralysed Superman inside his ship, explaining that he and his ship are now one as he inserts himself to the master hub and starts analyzing Superman. He explains his vision before the big bang, that he saw a giant hand reaching toward him and Superman's face, making Superman his angel of Death, destined to destroy him. After Brainiacs Analysis he slides his fingers into the central computer and begins to kill Superman with his power. However as he does this, the natives of Systus 2 launch Plasma missiles at Brainiacs ship. While Brainiac devotes some energy to dealing with the attackers, Superman takes advantage and slips away, albeit still without his powers.

Brainiac notices and his ships interior defence systems start trying to stop Superman. As Brainiac is distracted however 2 missiles pierce the hull of his ship. Enrage Brainiac brutally retaliates and destroys the planet. He then shows this to the natives he had abducted previously, and tells them to prepare for battle.

Superman meanwhile, has to use his wits to survive, after some close calls he eventually triumphs over Brainiacs defences, steals his shuttle and escapes from the skull ship.

Brainiac sees this and gives chase, they race through an asteroid field where Superman eventually crashes into one. Much to Brainiacs horror however, Superman emerges his powers restored. Superman engages Brainiacs ship as the tentacles shoot out to stop him. During Superman's fight with them, Brainiac launches another homing Red Sun torpedo. Superman has no choice but to try escape it, and after flying through space with the torpedo continuously gaining he makes a desperate gamble and flies into the heart of a yellow sun, whereupon the torpedo disintegrates. He returns to find Brainiac gone, warped so far not even his telescopic vision can pick him up. No doubt to recoup and plan his next attack. Superman then returns to metropolis, to work and the life of Clark Kent, while he worries that he alone may not be able to stop Brainiac.

Meanwhile, in a distant star system Brainaic's Skull ship looms over a decimated planet. He has destroyed 2 planets and taken all his warriors. He has armed himself fully, and re-evaluated his strategy. This time, he says, Superman will be destroyed.

Showdown!

Superman sits on his central computer in the fortress of solitude trying to get data on the new Brainiac. He gets up a schematic of Brainiac and discovers he is made of living Metal, before the computer crashed.

Superman leaves the fortress in frustration, going to his apartment to get some R&R as Clark Kent, when he is called into work by his boss Morgan Edge. After spotting Brainiacs skullship with his telescopic vision however, he snaps at Edge and flies off to the Justice League watchtower to get help against Brainiac. He enters amidst Wally West (Kid Flash) asking Barry Allen Flash advice on whether to continue being a teen titan or stay in school. Superman informs them of Brainaic's arrival and his need for help, while the rest of the Justice League is summoned Wally offers the help of the Teen Titans, which Superman gratefully accepts.

Several minutes later, the whole JLA and Teen Titans are assembled, and start discussing a plan when Brainiacs ship is spotted over New York City. Brainiac starts deploying the armies he collected, all mind controlled and using his technology.

The JLA and Teen Titans go swiftly to New York and engage the armies in battle.

As the battle rages cyborg states they need to go after Brainiac himself, Star Fire attempts this and attacks Brainiac's ship but is knocked back and stunned by his forcefield, with Red Tornado catching her.

Superman meanwhile, agrees with Cyborg but is being chased by a few of Brainiac's soldiers, who are all outfitted with Red Sun lazers weaponised into lethal force. In addition, Brainiac has outfitted his soldiers with gear that leeches off Superman's powers, temporarily powering them before disintegrating them, which Superman only realises after trying to lose them by digging through a mountain and seeing them disintegrate.

Superman flies to his fortress to try and find an answer on how to defeat Brainiac but his computer is still fried. He realises that the last time it stopped working was due to high sunspot activity which plays havoc with electronic devices.

Meanwhile the battle in between the JLA, the Titans and Brainiac's armies rages on, but they are outnumbered and the Flash is wounded. Superman flies up into space, and Brainiac gives pursuit figuring Superman has come up with some plan. Superman is indeed trying to bait brainiac into following him to the sun, but Brainiac hits Superman with his powerful tractor beams. Superman realizes Brainiac is putting all of his power into the beams, so flies towards the planning to break through the hull, forcing Brainiac to stop the beams and put up his forcefield. Superman bounces off it and flies toward the sun, Brainiac following and not understanding Supermans plan.

As Brainiac's ship draws to the surface of the sun, Superman creates great winds to cool the surface and create the effects of Sunspots. Brainiac starts losing power and shutting down, but suddenly he uses his backup power to go into Hyperspace and escape, all too quick for Superman to stop him.

With Brainiac gone, the warriors return to their senses and Superman promises to find them a new planet to live on. Superman and Wonder Woman then look into the sky, hoping that when Brainiac returns, they will be ready.

 Superman on Earth

On the distant green planet of Krypton, Jor-El reports to the science council in the temple of wisdom. After a series of freak tidal waves and other disasters Jor-El had been assigned to investigate what was causing these disasters. He reports that krypton is being slowly drawn into the sun due to its gravitational pull and Krypton's close proximity. It is now so close that krypton is doomed, the planet, Jor-El reports will burst like a bubble in what could be hours or months. He proposes a plan to build a fleet of ships for the Kryptonian race and go to earth, a planet with a similar atmosphere. He is called a madman and his warning is dismissed.

Crestfallen he arrives home to his wife Lara, and son Kal. He decides to just send the three of them to earth, and as he is getting ready to launch the test rocket, Krypton's final moments come. As the Rocket only has room for one, Jor-El insists on sending Lara, but Lara says they should send Kal instead. Lara decides to stay with Jor-El to the end. They bid farewell to Kal and launch him in the test Rocket. As the rocket flies away, Krypton explodes.

On April 10th, 1926 on a dirt road in Kansas, a kindly couple of farmers called Eben and Sarah kent are driving when they see a rocket fall into the bushes on the side of the road. Eben rushes over and grabs baby Kal-El just as the rocket explodes. They note that neither the baby or the blankets he came in were harmed by the fire at all. The Kents, knowing that the government wouldn't believe them if they told them what really happened, name him Clark.

Over the years they notice Clark developing strange powers, and at the age of 12 an agitated Clark comes to Sarah and tells her he found a lost ball at school that day by seeing through a rock. He then asks why he's stronger and faster than all the other kids. It's at that point Sarah decides to tell them how they found him.

On the 25th anniversary of the day they found Clark, a surprise party is planned. Before Clark returns Eben suffers a heart attack, and is declared dead by a doctor later that day, as Clark comforts a bereaved Sarah. Sarah says "He was a good man", and Clark says "He was a good father".

Some time later, Clark and Sarah are at the Smallville bustop. Clark is being sent off to make use of his powers for the common good. She gives him his costume, saying she made it from the indestructible blankets he was found in. They say their goodbyes, and Clark boards the bus to Metropolis.

Upon arriving, Clark blends in by donning glasses and acting mild mannered and timid. He goes for a job interview for a journalist position at the Daily Planet, but is stuck waiting hours outside, only to be refused to even be seen by Perry White. Clark decides to hop on the ledge and go through Perry's window, where he interrupts a conversation between Lois Lane and Perry. As Perry asks how he got in Clark simply says he climbed in through the window, as Perry is trying to get a more credible explanation Jimmy Olsen bursts into the office, saying that there was a man hanging off a blimp which can't make a landing due to high winds. Lois and Jimmy rush off to cover the story, and Clark asks Perry if the man was rescued and he got the story, would he be hired? Perry not quite listening says yes, and Clark rushes off to the store room, and for the first time changes into Superman, and flies off.

At the blimp, the man hanging onto the rope falls off but is caught by Superman. Clark gets the exclusive story from the man, and back at the daily planet office, the man Lois and Jimmy are all attesting to seeing a "Super-guy" fly off after rescuing him. Clark gets the job and the headline reads

"SUPERMAN RESCUES AIRPORT MECHANIC. Catches Doomed Man Mid-Air As He Falls From Blimp Rope. by Clark Kent."

Lois however, has a few questions for Clark. How did he leave after Lois and Jimmy but get to the scene first? How did he manage to find the man before every ace reporter in the City? Clark merely replies "Maybe I'm a Superman."

Flight to the North

A tall muscular simple-minded country man walks into the crumly hotel with his Mule Lilly Belle, he announces himself to the clerk as Sylvester J Superman from Skunk Hollow. The clerk asks him to bend a steel bar and he does so with his bare hands, the Clerk mistaking him for the real superman in disguise gives him a room even allowing his Mule to accompany him.

Meanwhile "Leftover" Louie Lyman has just been released from prison after a 5 year sentence thanks to the articles of Clark Kent about the Bank Job he pulled. After he confronts Clark at his office and fails to intimidate him, he goes to his room in the Crumby hotel where he meets with his partner in crime Buckets. They discuss the 50 grand hidden away but end up getting into an argument over who can make a better lemom meringue pie, Louie's old friend Margie or Buckets old aunt. They end up wagering the money stashed away on it and Louie leaves to find Margie.

Meanwhile Sylvester J Superman mistakes an ad written by Margie in the Daily Planet help section asking for Superman to mean him, Clark Kent also reads this ad and they both head to Margie's,

While this is happening Louie is trying to get a Lemon meringue pie from Margie, but Margie has baked only one and its for her fiance, who also made her promise not to bake pies for anyone else. As Louie is about to steal it, Sylvester J Superman arrives with his Mule Lilly Belle and deters Louie who does not want any crimes he commits witnessed. Margie is confused as she was expecting the real superman, but sure enough Sylvester moves a large piano with ease and she is convinced he is the man for the job, the job being her lemon meringue pie needs to be flown to an air force base in the arctic swiftly to be delivered to her fiance Steve. Clark Kent arrives to see this and is curious as to how Sylvester will proceed.

As they exit Louie tries to buy the Pie from Sylvester but is flatly declined, and Sylvester leaves for the air base. Meanwhile at the base Steve is talking to himself in the mirror when Sylvester strides in with his Mule Lilly Belle. He delivers the pie and Steve is shocked to find that it is indeed Margie's famous Lemon meringue pie. As they eat it Louie comes in brandishing a gun and steals the pie, Steve chases after him with a gun but doesn't shoot, when Sylvester asks why he didn't shoot Steve just said hes not worth it.

Meanwhile the real Superman has found out from Bucket that Louie rented a plane. Flying over to the airbase in the arctic he discovers (after Superman meets Superman) upon arrival that Louie's plane has gone down and he is requesting assistance. Superman flies over and rescues him, then delivers the pie back to Steve.

Louie, now back in the Crumby hotel thanks to Superman is trying to warm himself when Chuckles enters and reveals that his aunt threw him out and neither of them got pies, therefore making the bet void. After their experiences they vow to go straight, and tell this to a visiting Clark Kent and Sylvester J Superman.

Sylvester decides to go back to skunk hollow where he can be plain ol superman, as the big city just isn't for him. Clark shakes his hand and wishes him (and Lilly Belle) the best of luck.

It's a dark and stormy night in metropolis, that is until the citizens are in danger from the ferocious lightning storm and Superman has to send the storm away with his heat vision. He then heads to an old castle where he is due to cover a story as Clark Kent. He arrives and meets Lois and a Mrs Macardle as well as the other participants of the SEANCE. Most important member being Cassandra Craft, a blind medium who senses Clark's inner nobility burning like a great fire despite his outward behaviour as Clark Kent.

The Seance is being conducted at midnight on the 50th anniversary of Roland Randall, a Modern Master of Mysticism, as per instructions he left before his death. As they conduct the séance, the spirit of Roland Randall is greatly agitated, warning them not to summon him now,.as he is the only one holding "them" back. With the last warning shouted, Cassandra screams passes out for a moment. Clark observes the storm seems to be back, even though he sent it miles away earlier. With his Super-vision he scans the clouds and spots two nightmarish figures, and abruptly excuses himself as Clark Kent, feigning cowardice.

SYNOPSIS:

Written by Rey-Zod

Superman surveils the city of Metropolis, scouring the streets for any sign of trouble. All seems in order, and even the prying eyes of the Contessa from Lexcorps doesn't seem to faze the Man of Steel. As she plots to keep eyes on the Kryptonian, he suddenly disappears into thin air with a little 'Pop'.

In another universe, altogether, the Silver Surfer comes across a planet which he has never seen before in all his cosmic travels. Although it seems uninhabited and a ball of fire and molten lava, the Surfer senses voices pleading for someone to save them. Before he can do anything, he too disappears with a sudden 'pop'.

Both mighty figures appear to have traded places and now inhabit each others' universe. Superman at first thinks he's landed in Krypton, but it soon becomes apparent that all is not what it seems. A quick encounter with the locals culminates in Superman finding himself face to face with another adversary - one familiar within the Marvel Universe - the Super Skrull!

The Silver Surfer appears to have landed on Earth though he senses it is not of the same universe of which he is familiar. The Surfer immediately gets attacked upon by robotic defence units whilst the citizens flee in terror. The Surfer's powers appear haywire, but he manages to still control his board and with it he soars high into the sky, hoping to reach orbit. To his surprise, outer space is missing, and in it's stead,  he crashes through what appears to be a barrier enveloping Earth.

Back with Superman, the fight with the Super Skrull rages - and Superman appears to be beat. The Super Skrull let's slip of a 'game' in which he's involved and this is enough for Superman to gain a sniff of what is really going on. No longer afraid and apparently vulnerable to the Skrull's attack, Superman delivers a knockout blow. It so happens Superman's suspicions are incorrect too, as he believes it's Mxyzptlk… he is indeed wrong and surprised when he finds out it is none other than the Impossible Man!

The Surfer discovers he has actually freed himself from a miniature city encased in glass and finds himself in some sort of unknown dimension. He peers in towards the glass casing, whilst the miniature citizens look in horror at the silver behemoth. It's not long before he is set upon by droids and dinosaurs and Norrin Radd soon figures out it is not a mechanised program, but a living entity which is playing a deadly game.

The Impossible Man reveals to Superman the motives behind the game - both he and MxyzPtlk have plotted together to form a game to entertain themselves, with Superman and Silver Surfer as their main pieces. Each are to convince their targets they they are the ones behind the mayhem and the Impossible Man claims the prize with his manipulation of Superman.

In the distance, both eye off an armada which seems to be heading their way - an armada of Skrulls!

The miniature citizens of Metrpolis are in a state of panic as their world appears to be crashing down on them. The Impossible Man is maddened by this as one of the rules was that no one would get hurt. Having felt that MXYZPTLK is breaking the rules, the Impossible Man goes head to head against MXYZPTLK and a flurry of Marvel and DC characters collide as the two powerful beings continually change forms as they fight.

When it's all he can take, the Silver Surfer transforms the Impossible Man to a form of Superman to cease the bickerings between the reality changing beings and calls for reason.

The Surfer and the Impossible Man trick MXYZPTLK to bring Superman to the unknown dimension where they all are, and with all four of them together the Surfer calls the game forfeit.

With the game seemingly over, the Surfer offers to return the city to it's rightful scale and location, whilst Superman convinces MXYZPTLK to assist with Impossible Man to bring them back to their rightful universes.

Metropolis is restored and once again MXYZPTLK is tricked into allowing both Superman and Silver Surfer to return to the Surfer's universe to deal with the Skrulls. His fearsome reputation makes short work of the armada and the Surfer vows to protect the planet known as Bridoon from now on.

With one final gesture, Superman is then returned to his rightful universe, with MXYZPTLK under obligation due to a technical loophole.

The Two titans say their goodbyes, knowing full well that their memories of the adventure will fade. Both the Impossible Man and MXYZPTLK depart too, seen bickering and heckling each other to the bitter end. As the Silver Surfer rides into the distance, he smiles at what had just passed and what had been accomplished. It's not long before the memory fades, as do the two reality warping entities...and with their disappearance, a small pop is heard.
