| Del Piero | 22 Jun 2020 | 01:02:15 | |
Displays of loyalty are becoming ever rarer in modern football but Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero knew the meaning of the word. In the same summer the legendary striker-cum-attacker became a world champion with Italy, he followed the Bianconeri into Serie B following the Calciopoli scandal. Others, including Fabio Cannavaro, Lilian Thuram, Gianluca Zambrotta, Patrick Vieira and Zlatan Ibrahimović abandoned the Old Lady. But Del Piero stood by his club and was duly rewarded. He won the title and was Capocannoniere (top scorer) before repeating the trick following promotion. In almost 20 seasons, he became Juventus' all-time leading scorer, hitting 290 goals to overtake Giampiero Boniperti, and succeeded Gaetano Scirea as the club's leading appearance maker (705 appearances). And that's before we get to a trophy haul which included six Scudetti, the UEFA Champions League and a host of other pieces of silverware. In the latest episode of You, me and... host Tom Bodell was joined by Juventus fan, author and football journalist Adam Digby to remember Del Piero.
