SINEAD O’CONNOR TRIBUTE - Remembering a life in Music - Top 5 Sinead O’Connor Songs - Memories of Sinead29 Jul 202301:11:12

A Tribute to SINEAD OCONNOR - Special Edition Podcast

We (Rob & Matt) recorded a special podcast today where we talk about Sinead O'Connor who passed away on July 26, 2023 in Herne Hill London UK.

Sinead struggled throughout life despite being an incredible singer songwriter and finding fame (which most times doesn't matter at all).

We all hoped Sinead would win against her demons but in the end they won.  We were looking forward to her touring again and a new album.

We were big fans of Sinead O'Connor's music from the start back in 1987 and followed her throughout her career and life.   We share our memories of Sinead throughout the years and we will tell you what our top 5 Sinead O'Connor songs are.

Thank you for listening!

JESSE DANIEL EDWARDS Interview / Morrissey / Milking Goats / Violensia / Eddie the Tabby Cat22 Jul 202300:36:44

Today on KNOW GOOD MUSIC we talk with singer/songwriter : JESSE DANIEL EDWARDS

We talk to Jesse while he is relaxing poolside about his new incredible album "VIOLENSIA", growing up in a small California town milking goats, his time as tour manager with Morrissey and some details on one of his new songs "What Ever Happened To"

Jesse's voice is mesmerizing.  Think Morrissey meets Freddie Mercury meets Jeff Buckley!

********

A little bit about JESSE DANIEL EDWARDS :

Jesse Daniel Edwards is an alternative songwriter from the small mountain town of Cuyamaca, CA where he grew up without TV, internet, or significant exposure to the outside world. Leaving home at 16, he spent his late teens busking on street corners around the US and abroad.

While singing outside of bars on Music Row in Nashville, TN, Jesse struck up a friendship with the late Al Bunetta (John Prine). Bunetta served as a mentor to the young artist, encouraging Jesse to write and tour full-time in the years to follow.

After a sabbatical from touring, Jesse returned to the stage in 2021 with critically acclaimed Juni Ata - a collaborative project produced by Steve Cropper (Otis Redding, RCA), and arranger/co-producer Jacob Rosswog.  The resulting album "Saudade" charted successfully in the U.S. and abroad, while receiving significant airplay and garnering reviews in Mojo Magazine, American Songwriter, and the Associated Press.

2023 marks the vinyl re-release of 2012's "American Dreaming" (Cavity Search Records- Elliott Smith), and the summer release of piano rock opus "Violensia" (produced by Joe Chiccarelli- The Strokes, The Shins).

MELANIE Interview - Woodstock / Brand New Key / Miley Cyrus08 Jul 202301:09:20

Rob and Matt talk with legendary singer / songwriter MELANIE!

We talk to Melanie about her experience at the original woodstock as one of only 3 solo performers.  Melanie goes into great detail about her experience; Starting with the moment she first heard of woodstock, flying for the first time in a helicopter and taking the stage in front of a massive audience (unlike anything she ever experienced).

We also talk about: Her #1 song (in 1970) BRAND NEW KEY and how she came up with the idea for the song (you won't believe what it was).

Performing with Miley Cyrus (Backyard Sessions)

Melanie's new album MAGIC BUS.  This is a radio interview and music from 1972.

We loved talking to Melanie and reliving many memories with her and you'll love this interview.

***********

A little bit about Melanie:

Melanie landed in the New York City music and radio scene in the late 1960’s. Her first single Beautiful People immediately became a turntable hit. Her first tour began with an impressive 40-day run of shows at Paris’ world-famous L’Olympia Theater at the personal invitation of Bruno Coquatrix. In the years to come she would entertain millions: at An Aquarian Exposition (the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival), at Carnegie Hall, and the Isle of Wight and Glastonbury music festivals, The Sydney Opera House, the South Korean DMZ, the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the Royal Albert Hall, and other theaters, halls and beloved music clubs around the globe. Melanie launched Neighborhood Records, making her the first American woman to open a mainstream record label. She recorded over 20 chart hits and many have been re-recorded. Melanie received an Emmy after composing lyrics for the theme song of the hit television series Beauty and the Beast. “What Have They Done to My Song Ma” was re-recorded by Ray Charles with the Count Basie Band. Nina Simone delivered a remarkable rendition, as well. “(Lay Down) Candles in the Rain” was re-recorded by Mott the Hoople on their 1971 album Wildlife. Meredith Brooks and Queen Latifah later re-recorded the anthem. “Some Say (I Got Devil)" was re-recorded by Smith’s frontman Morrissey. Melanie has always known her calling in life was to entertain. Audiences have welcomed her to the stage for more than fifty years, and she continues to perform today.

A little bit about Chris Klafford:

Born in a small town in Sweden (Ramsberg; population 15)  Kläfford began his musical journey from a very early age. He picked up the guitar when he was just nine years old.

For ten years he honed his skills at gigs all across Sweden, slowly building his talent as a songwriter and performer.

Then in 2017, Kläfford hit a career high point with his win on Swedish Idol.   Capitalizing on his success just a week after, he released his debut EP, Treading Water.

Roughly two years after, he would fly across the pond to perform on America’s Got Talent.   He was instantly a fan favorite, with his cover of John Lennon’s “Imagine,”.

All of this momentum led to three Top 5 singles on national radio in a year and over 35 million streams.  Kläfford has released ten more singles, two more EPS and a full length album since 2017.

You can find Chris Klafford's new album "Maybe It's Just Me" on most music platforms and you can order a vinyl copy at : https://www.bengans.com/en/artiklar/chris-klafford-maybe-its-just-me.html

CHRIS CANTERBURY interview - Nashville Country Artist - Quaalude Lullabies28 Jan 202300:32:51

Jim interviews Nashville Country Artist Chris Canterbury to talk about his newest album "Quaalude Lullabies", the songwriting process, touring, what he does besides music and more!

Chris writes from the heart and while some of his songs are not entirely auto-biographical they will pull you in with their honesty.  There's not a bad song on the album and you really need to listen to Chris' music.  He needs to be heard.

ABOUT CHRIS CANTERBURY'S new album

"When I sat down to write this project, I tried to present each topic as a straight-forward Saturday morning kitchen conversation. That’s how I approach songwriting and it’s worked for me for a long time” says Chris Canterbury, a Louisiana native singer-songwriter, now based in Nashville.

The project Canterbury is talking about is Quaalude Lullabies, a nine track collection of mostly sad songs that offers on-the-nose lyrical phrasing, subtlety loose production, and an honest insight into razor-edge topics like addiction, depression, and loneliness.

In what started as a thought experiment, Quaalude Lullabies was self-produced by Canterbury, his first opportunity to be on both sides of the control room window. “I wanted to woodshop a record together that felt like Nebraska,” says Canterbury. “I wanted it to be loose like a box of bedroom demo tapes, but cohesive enough to stand on its own. I feel like we ended up with a solid album.”

BILL SUMMERS interview - Herbie Hancock / The Headhunters21 Dec 202200:27:26

Mike and I had a great time talking to Bill Summers (who was in Herbie Hancock's band The Headhunters)!  We talk about various drums, his first meeting with Herbie Hancock, and the famous sound Bill created for one of the best known Jazz songs ever ... called Watermelon Man... Bill even demonstrates for us how the sound was created.

About Bill: During the 1990s, Summers played with Los Hombres Calientes along with co-leader of the group, trumpeter Irvin Mayfield and Jason Marsalis.  However, Summers has a much longer musical career, often working behind the scenes on film scores for various movies such as The Color Purple and the television miniseries Roots with Quincy Jones. He also played with Herbie Hancock during The Headhunters years, and is mentioned in passing by the liner notes of The Headhunters' 2003 release Evolution Revolution as contributing to that recording.

Check out the Headhunters newest album (sections of 4 of the new songs can be heard on our podcast) THE HEADHUNTERS - Speakers in the House released in November 2022:

Speakers In The House is the legendary jazz-funk ensemble's first new album in 11 years. Co-lead by percussionist Bill Summers and drummer Mike Clark with support from NEA Jazz Master Donald Harrison on alto saxophone, The Headhunters latest studio effort arrives just in time to celebrate this American music institution's 50th anniversary in 2023, having formed around Herbie Hancock's classic recording, Head Hunters, in 1973. An eight-track set available on Ropeadope Records, highlights from Speakers In The House include the New Orleans' second-line grooves of "Rocking At The Mole House," the world music-influenced jazz-fusion of "Kongo Square" and a modern post-bop re-imagination of the classic Headhunters' composition "Actual Proof," first released on their 1974 album, Thrust. Joining Summers, Clark and Harrison for the recording are keyboardist Stephen Gordon and bassist Reggie Washington plus special guests Jerry Z on organ, One Drop aka Scott Roberts on drums, Fode Sissoko on Kora and Ashlin Parker on trumpet.

INTERVIEW with ROBERT WALTER - Soul Jazz Keyboardist - The Greyboy Allstars - Roger Waters Tour13 Nov 202200:37:18

Mike and I had a great time talking to Soul Jazz Keyboardist Robert Walter about his high school band Daddy Long Legs, his current band: The Greyboy Allstars and what it's like being on tour with Pink Floyd's Roger Waters.

Robert is heading back on tour in March 2023 with Roger's band for the European leg of the tour.

About Robert:

A founding member of the seminal groove band The Greyboy Allstars, organ, keyboard and synth sharp-shooter Robert Walter splits his time between his own 20th Congress, The Greyboy Allstars, and a robust film soundtrack career in Los Angeles.

Initially formed as the backing band for rare groove luminary DJ Greyboy, The Greyboy Allstars became a longterm project for Walter with a string of critically acclaimed albums, world tours. The band quickly became home to some of the most revered players on the modern music scene.

The Greyboy Allstars' success also served as a platform for the band's individual members to launch highly successful and substantially diverse solo careers. To flex his desire to compose in a way that was just outside of Greyboy's wheelhouse, Walter formed 20th Congress and recorded and toured heavily through the late '90s and '00s.

The band featured a rotating crew of brilliant improvisers and genre-bending virtuosos over the years including Stanton Moore, Joe Russo, Will Bernard, and Cochemea Gastelum, Simon Lott, Victor Little, Chris Alford, Scott Metzger, Andy Hess, and John Kimock,

A brilliant improviser with a gift for riveting hooks and unstoppable grooves, Walter set out to create songs that blur the line between the composed and the spontaneous; an album with a narrative arc that isn’t tethered to concrete ideas. He uses a full arsenal of keyboards, synths and electronics and draws together the varied aspects of his career, from his film soundtrack work with Michael Andrews to his free-ranging improvisational excursions with the likes of genre jugglers like Marco Benevento, Skerik and Mike Gordon.

INTERVIEW with BUTCH PATRICK (Eddie Munster) / Rob Zombie / The Munsters Movie / The Monkees / All Things Munsters19 Aug 202200:30:49

Today we talk to Butch about the new Rob Zombie Munsters Movie, Butch's favorite munsters episodes, his appearance on a MONKEES episode, The Munsters Album, The Koach and more!

Mike and I grew up watching the Munsters on TV (like alot of people our age) so this was such a great thing for us to be able to talk to Butch Patrick for the podcast and a great way to kick off the new Munsters Movie coming out September 27th on Netflix.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT BUTCH PATRICK:

Butch Patrick (born Patrick Alan Lilley; August 2, 1953) is an American former child actor. Beginning his professional acting career at the age of seven, Patrick is perhaps best known for his role as child werewolf Eddie Munster on the CBS comedy television series The Munsters from 1964 to 1966 and in the 1966 feature film Munster, Go Home!, and as Mark on the ABC Saturday morning series Lidsville from 1971 to 1973.

After The Munsters ended, Patrick continued to appear in guest-starring roles on various popular television series of the 1960s, including I Dream of Jeannie, Death Valley Days, Gunsmoke, The Monkees, Daniel Boone, and Adam-12, as well as a recurring role as Gordon Dearing on the CBS family comedy series My Three Sons. During this time, Patrick also appeared in several Walt Disney films, including Way Down Cellar, The Young Loner and The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, as well as portraying the role of Milo in the 1970 MGM live-action/animated film The Phantom Tollbooth.

In 1971, Patrick landed the starring role on Sid and Marty Krofft’s Saturday morning children’s program Lidsville, broadcast on ABC. In the psychedelic fantasy series, Patrick portrayed Mark, a boy lost in a strange land of walking, talking, singing hats, opposite veteran character actors Charles Nelson Reilly and Billie Hayes. The show was in production from 1971 to 1973.  Butch can be heard in the new Rob Zombie Munsters movie as "the tin can man".

KURT REIL of THE GRIP WEEDS Interview (Pete Townsend / House of Vibes / The Knickerbockers)16 Jul 202200:28:36

Jim and Mike talk to Kurt about the Gripweeds latest contribution to "JEM RECORDS CELEBRATES PETE TOWNSEND" which comes out on August 5th.  We also talk about some bands he's working with currently, House of Vibes Recording Studio, and more!

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE GRIP WEEDS:

Critics, while praising The Grip Weeds, often try to pigeonhole them with the “Power Pop” label. This is a bit of a misnomer. While there are plenty of driving, poppy melodies, chiming guitars and close harmonies, The Grip Weeds’ releases have sported many different styles of original material, from Psychedelic and Garage Rock to Folk-based ballads and thought-provoking social commentary. This diversity has landed several Grip Weeds songs on the top of the Little Steven’s Underground Garage "Coolest Song In The World” list, as well as placed Grip Weeds music in several television and film projects. Their reputation as a top shelf live band has brought them to venues across the United States, and internationally, including the South By Southwest (SXSW) conference in Austin, Texas, Liverpool, England’s legendary Cavern Club, and several tours of Europe, among others.

Family ties are strong in The Grip Weeds, as singer/drummer Kurt Reil is joined by his wife Kristin Pinell Reil and brother Rick Reil, both singer/ guitarists: Kurt’s drum style at times seems manic and driving, yet with a keen sense of timekeeping; Kristin’s growling, aggressive lead guitar lines are laced with style, emotion and impressive technique; Rick adds his own distinctive guitar and songwriting talents, and the family trio also spearheads the recording and production of The Grip Weeds’ music. Bassist Dave DeSantis has held down bass duties for a number of top New Jersey bands before settling in with The Grip Weeds since 2012. All four Grip Weeds sing, and their group vocals have been acclaimed as one of the most distinctive and natural close harmonic blends working today.

COPYRIGHT CLAIM: The Grip Weeds renditions of the songs : No Time Like The Right Time, Strawberry Fields Forever, Lies and Going All The Way used with permission from Kurt Reil.

LAURENCE JUBER interview - Finger style guitarist (Paul McCartney and Wings / Back to the Egg / Martin Guitar / 7th Heaven)10 Jul 202200:34:57

Jim and Mike talk to Laurence Juber about his newest album (Select Blends), what "finger-style" guitar is, his time as a member of Paul McCartney's WINGS, (my favorite WINGS album) BACK TO THE EGG, Martin Guitar & more!

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT LAURENCE JUBER (LJ)

GRAMMY® winning guitarist Laurence Juber is a solo performer, recording artist, composer and arranger. His playing fuses folk, jazz, blues, pop and classical styles, creating a multi-faceted performance that belies the use of only one instrument.

A music graduate of London’s Goldsmith’s College, he was featured guitar soloist with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra before becoming established as a studio musician in the mid-1970’s. First internationally recognized as lead guitarist in Beatle Paul McCartney’s Wings, with whom he won a Grammy, Juber has since established himself as world-renowned guitar virtuoso and entertainer.

Known to his fans as LJ,  he has recorded more than two dozen albums spotlighting his unique touch and tone on acoustic guitar. His latest release is Select Blends,   a ‘virtually’ live album pulled from his over 250 livestream performances during Covid lockdown.

His LJ Plays The Beatles was voted one of Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s all-time Top Ten albums. DANA FUCHS Interview -Blues / Rock Artist (Borrowed Time / Across the Universe / Bono / Dee Snider)11 Jun 202200:31:26

Jim and Mike talk to Dana Fuchs about her new album BORROW TIME (the album went to #4 on billboard's blue's charts), RECORDING of the new album, TOURING, BONO and more!  A great fun interview!

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT DANA FUCHS:

Dana Fuchs is one of the most coveted blues rock stars in the world today. A singer whose hypnotic voice and presence, has led critics to compare her to Janis Joplin, Otis Redding and Mick Jagger. Dana's records receive fantastic reviews, and she has been in the top 10 on the world's most important sales list - Billboard in the USA. Dana stars as Sadie in ‘Across the Universe’, nominated for Best Picture at the Golden Globe Awards.  Today, Dana returns to her Southern Rock roots and her home label, Ruf Records to deliver the rawest, rockingest, musical offering of her album-making career.  With this release, Borrowed Time, we are treated to a deliciously dangerous collection of incredible songs and lyrics that run the gamut from barn-burning rockers to tear-jerking ballads, and we find Dana, the singer-songwriter, at the top of her game, a master of her craft, supported by a cast of dangerous musicians who have managed to capture the tornado in a bottle intensity, urgency, power, restraint and passion of Dana's live show on a studio album.  Produced by Bobby Harlow at Black River House, nestled in rural Croswell. MI, a midwestern factory town that provided the ideal setting for Dana to unleash her American roots, rock, soul. Get ready for a rockin' ride! Dana Fuchs | Borrowed Time, available everywhere via Ruf Records

ELVIS Movie & Soundtrack Review for KISSIN COUSINS

Paul and Rob talk about the 1964 Elvis movie KISSIN COUSINS.

They go thru most of the songs from the movie in order as they appear in the movie and we talk about the plot of the movie (there is a sort of a plot).

'Paul not only was on the podcast last year talking Horror Films (Paul is a writer/director of independent horror films like HUNT CHASE KILL and the LEGEND OF THE BUSHKILL WITCH) but... he's a huge Elvis fan just like Rob is ... so it was only fitting that Paul would agree to come to the studio and record this podcast.

MARSHALL CRENSHAW Interview / Beatlemania / The Smithereens / La Bamba / Buddy Holly14 May 202200:53:53

Jim and Mike talk to Marshall about being in BEATLEMANIA, the movie LA BAMBA (he played Buddy Holly), his new re-release #447, THE SMITHEREENS and alot more

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MARSHALL: After getting an early break playing John Lennon in a touring company of the Broadway musical Beatlemania, Crenshaw began his recording career with the now-legendary indie single “Something’s Gonna Happen.” His growing notoriety in his adopted hometown of New York City helped to win Crenshaw a deal with Warner Bros. Records, which released his self-titled 1982 debut album. That collection established Crenshaw as one of the era’s preeminent rock ’ n’ rollers, and that was confirmed by such subsequent albums as Field Day, Downtown, Mary Jean & 9 Others, Good Evening, Life’s Too Short, Miracle of Science, #447, What’s in the Bag? and Jaggedland.

Along the way, Crenshaw’s compositions have been covered by a broad array of performers, including Bette Midler, Kelly Willis, Robert Gordon, Ronnie Spector, Marti Jones and the Gin Blossoms, with whom Crenshaw co-wrote the Top 10 single “Til I Hear It From You.” He’s also provided music for several film soundtracks, appeared in the films La Bamba (in which he portrayed Buddy Holly) and Peggy Sue Got Married, and was nominated for Grammy and a Golden Globe awards for writing the title track for the film comedy Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.

Since 2011, Crenshaw has hosted his own radio show, The Bottomless Pit, on New York’s WFUV. He’s also worked on Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger’s HBO series Vinyl, doing “some session work, a little bit of songwriting..” Visit Marshalls website or Facebook, Instagram to find out where he's playing next!

COPYRIGHT CLAIM: The songs : Television Light, Little Wild One (No.5), Twenty-Five-Forty-One, Cynical Girl and Live & Learn used with permission from Marshall Crenshaw.

HOLLY HUTCHISON Interview - AnR Girl (Skid Row / Alanis Morissette / Blink 182 / Muse)16 Mar 202200:54:49

Jim and Mike talk to Holly Hutchison about being  an early champion for such artists as Blink 182, Alanis Morissette, Muse and many others.

We talk about her career as an A&R person and her work with promoting and guiding new artists with her own company "AnR Girl".  Believe it or not Mike, Jim and Holly all graduated from the same High School!

ABOUT HOLLY: Holly Hutchison Weinman is a business executive with over 34 years experience in the music and entertainment industry. She is a visionary with a passion for new ideas, branding and cultivating identity.

Her professional experience, A Level Repertoire, and deal making abilities draw largely from major recording corporation environments and highly successful mentors in New York City (Atlantic Records – a Time Warner Company) and Los Angeles (Capitol Records/EMI) where she held top ranking executive positions before venturing out on her own as a well respected, detail oriented and creative business owner. As an independent she has closed deals with Jason Flom Lava/Republic, Doug Morris former CEO Sony Music Entertainment and more.

Holly built her credibility through a consistent track record of identifying artists who have proven to be successful – some being Skid Row, Deftones, Alanis Morissette, Blink 182, Slipknot, Muse, Saliva, Bosson and Vega 4.

In Fall 2016, Holly took on management of the multi-platinum hard rock group SALIVA. She has enjoyed a long standing friendship with the group after being a first champion of SALIVA in 1998 while she was an A&R Executive at Capitol Records and the band were looking for a major label home. Unfortunately, Capitol Records did not sign SALIVA but the rockers went on to have a successful career at Island Records under music experts Rob Stevenson, Jeff Fenster and Lyor Cohen. Holly would remain a friend, business ally and mentor over the course of the next 18 years. In the two years of management, she doubled the group’s gross income, released an independent single that has accumulated over 14 million streams through her marketing and landed Saliva a deal with Megaforce/Orchard/Sony Music Entertainment.

The recording studio is a second home to Holly. She has extensive A&R experience that covers all aspects of album production and song selection for pop, rock and rap genres. She has worked with top multi platinum and Grammy award winning producers, mixers and songwriters such as Timbaland, Bob Marlette (Shinedown, Red Sun Rising), Jimmy Douglas, Peter Mokran, Ron Aniello, Josh Abraham, Al Sutton (Greta Van Fleet, Kid Rock), Michael Brauer (Coldplay), Dave Way (Christina Aguilera), Diane Warren, Billy Steinberg, Monty Powell (Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts), Jack Kugell, Kirsti Manna (“Austin” Blake Shelton) and Steve Kipner, just to name a few.
