Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast where today we’re all about Irrfan Khan and PIKU (2015). We wanted to leave our Other Khan series on a high note and who better to guide us to the top than Irrfan and Deepika Padukone? Directed by Shoojit Sircar, this is unarguably one of Padukone’s best roles and she goes toe-to-toe with not just the powerhouse that is Irrfan but also Amitabh Bachchan. But even if the movie belongs to Padukone, Irrfan is impossible to forget. He’s a romantic lead with impeccable deadpan comedic timing. He’s a star. He’s the cherry on top. It’s almost impossible to find a mediocre or bad performance by this man, who seemingly relished every single opportunity he got to be onscreen and his leaving has left a wound in not just Hindi or Indian cinema but world cinema. RIP Irrfan. You were the best of the Khans. Directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, this remake of the Marathi film MULSHI PATTERN was a tired detour into the kind of gangster film that should have been at least competent. We also discussed MINNAL MURALI (22m12s), a Netflix release starring Malayalam sensation Tovino Thomas. Directed by Basil Joseph, this tiny superhero film has been on everyone’s end of year lists as one of the best films of 2021. Our main review, however was Anand L. Rai’s ATRANGI RE (44m.00s), a hugely controversial film starring Dhanush, Sara Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar in a cameo. Opinions were mixed to outright split on the podcast as the hosts found themselves loving or hating this whimsical journey into the life of a young woman with severe trauma. Episode 105 of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is extremely retro with star of the week, Amjad Khan. Our journey into the world of The Other Khans goes way back in the time machine this week with 1981’a LAAWARIS. Directed by Hindi film legend Prakash Mehra, this sprawling masala entertainer is largely remembered for Amitabh Bachchan’s performance as a social outcast who doesn’t know what happened to his parents or why he was abandoned. The trope of the illegitimate child and the stigma he or she faces in a conservative society makes for the subject of a sensitive film - or it could be Laawaris! While the movie allows Amjad Khan a complete character arc, which was the reason why we chose this film, it is also chiefly notable for several execrable choices, none of which we enjoyed. Co-starring Zeenat Aman, Suresh Oberoi, and Rakhee in a special role, Laawaris is your glimpse into old school masala filmmaking, Khandaan-style.
