Ego Is Not The Enemy (Here's Why)27 Jul 202601:01:13

You keep hearing that you have to "let go of the ego," but do you actually know what your ego is?

In this episode, we take on one of the most misunderstood words in personal growth: ego. Rather than picking one definition, we walk through four completely different lenses (neuroscience, Freud, Jung, and non-dual Eastern philosophy) and unpack how each one changes what "working on yourself" actually means.

We start with why neuroscience calls the ego an "emergent property," something that can be observed but never fully explained. Then we get into the real Freudian model: the ego as the exhausted middleman between the id's pleasure-seeking and the superego's internalized parent, and why the ego, in Freud's view, actually loves keeping you confused. From there we unpack Jung's very different take: the ego as the sun rising and setting, the persona we wear, the shadow we disown, and why real growth in midlife isn't about destroying the ego but shifting its center of gravity toward the larger Self. We close by unpacking the non-dual perspective: the idea that the ego isn't something to fix at all, but a misperception to see through, so you can create from wholeness instead of lack.

Whether you're a coach, a client, or just someone tired of hearing "ego" thrown around without context, we give you the actual map, so the next time someone says "check your ego," you'll know exactly which model they're (probably not) talking about.

Why We Fall in Love with the "Wrong" Person (Jung's insight)19 Jul 202600:42:25

What if the person you fell in love with was never who you thought they were? In this episode of Jung on Purpose, we explore romantic love through the lens of Jungian psychology and non-dual philosophy, revealing that the overwhelming pull of attraction is actually your own soul image projected onto another person. We trace how the templates we absorbed from our parents quietly shape who we choose, why the honeymoon glow fades, and what surfaces in a long relationship once the projection falls away. Rather than treating relationship struggles as evidence that something needs fixing, we offer a more liberating view: your partner is a mirror, your patterns are an invitation to know yourself, and relationships may be the most powerful path to growth there is.

Key takeaways

  • Falling in love is a projection of your own soul image, which is why it feels transcendent and beyond your control. That doesn't make it less real; it's how the psyche opens us to deep connection with another person.
  • Your early relationships with your mother and father created the template for who you're drawn to and how you relate, and these patterns run beneath awareness until you bring them into the light.
  • Couples fit together like puzzle pieces through unconscious complementarity, so what frustrates you most about your partner often points back to something unseen in yourself.
  • There is no finish line where you're finally "healed enough" for love. Growth is a lifelong discovery, and a conscious relationship is one of the richest places to do it.

The Jungian Difference in Relationship Coaching13 Aug 202400:24:25

Debra and Dr. Rob discuss the benefits of incorporating Jungian coaching principles as a relationship coach. Understanding attachment styles, the unconscious mind, and the deeper dynamics of relationships can help coaches guide their clients more effectively, whether they are single, going through a divorce or seeking to improve their current relationships.

The key is to focus on the client's relationship with themselves, as this is often reflected in their external relationships. This depth-oriented approach goes beyond basic "positive thinking" strategies to address the root causes of relationship challenges. Self-understanding and the Jungian concepts of the shadow and the anima/animus in relationships are important for deeper growth.

The persona we present to the world can lead us to attract the opposite, or "shadow" parts of ourselves that we've repressed. By integrating the shadow, we can then work on connecting with others at a deeper, soulful level through the anima/animus - the universal, divine force that drives us to merge with another person. This process of self-discovery and integration is key to forming truly meaningful relationships.

We discuss the importance of doing inner work and integrating one's own shadow before seeking a soulmate connection. When we project our ideals onto others, we give away our power and set ourselves up for disappointment. By reclaiming our projections through shadow work, we can meet others from a place of wholeness and authenticity, leading to more fulfilling and lasting relationships

The journey of self-discovery is challenging but essential for finding a true soul-to-soul connection. It's important to take personal responsibility in relationships, rather than blaming external factors or seeking an "ideal" partner. Growth and strengthening bonds can happen even through difficult times, as long as individuals are willing to do the inner work and not put all their needs on their partner

The key is to empower oneself, accept responsibility, and approach relationships with an open and positive mindset, rather than fear of getting hurt again. We share the importance of healthy, conscious relationships and how to guide others through the process of personal growth and shadow work.

By doing this inner work, individuals have found meaningful relationships and strengthened their existing partnerships. The focus is on normalizing human patterns and empowering people to transcend their conditioned behaviors, rather than dwelling on trauma or inner child healing. This process leads to lasting change, rather than just addressing symptoms.
