| Reinventing Journalism with Richie McGinniss | 29 Mar 2025 | 01:16:41 | |
Journalism today is rapidly changing. The days of traditional media with emotional manipulation are coming to an end. Leading the way is Richie McGinniss as he and his Pigeon Press team blazes the road forward with in the moment, boots on the ground, transparent news reporting. He is a fearless new breed of journalist. Plunging into both the Black Lives Matter and MAGA demonstrations, Richie not only reveals the unvarnished truth of events that impacting the world but also giving you raw perspective missing in mainstream news reports. Now, McGinniss is stepping back from the mayhem and sharing his experiences in his new book due out in November, RIOT DIET, that brings readers knee-deep into the chaos he covered first-hand and provides deep insights into how the media and politicians distort the demonstrations for their own ends. In today's interview Richie retells the stories and first hand account of the protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he narrowly avoided a bullet fired by Kyle Rittenhouse, then desperately tried to save the life of one of Rittenhouse’s shooting victims. He recounts what he saw during the January 6th protests and the fallout afterwards and his time covering the clash between guards and Proud Boys in Seattle’s Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) during the Black Lives Matter movement. Armed with only cellphones, McGinniss and his squad use the power of internet video to place viewers directly among the demonstrators and police. The videos were posted to Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram, which provided Richie with a firsthand understanding of how their algorithms work. His recordings received tens of millions of views after Kenosha when he interviewed Kyle Rittenhouse 13 min before the shooting and on January 6, when he spoke with a man smoking a doobie under the Capitol Rotunda. These reports were aggregated by nearly every major national and international news outlet. In his new book RIOT DIET, Richie hopscotches from the Memorial Day riots in front of the White House after the death of George Floyd, to the clash of guards and Proud Boys in Seattle’s Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ), to a face-off between the umbrella gang and the NYPD in New York City’s protest in front of City Hall, to Portland’s teargas-soaked tangles between federal officers and demonstrators, and finally to the smoldering commercial districts and the deadly shootings in Kenosha. More than just a thrilling tale of tear gas, fire, and destruction, join us in today's conversation to hear about how these news stories not only impact our lives, but also how we as 'consumers' of the news can find new and fresh ways to get more accurate and relevant news right from the scene of these world changing events. | Sustainable Clothing with Kris Cody | 14 Mar 2024 | 00:45:13
Kris Cody is the founder of Paka Apparel with a dream of changing the way people play outdoors and the clothing that makes it possible. Kris launched Paka in 2017 and brought alpaca sweaters to the public through the brands’ first Kickstarter – Paka exceeded its goal of $20,000 in under 24 hours and raised more than $350,000 in 30 days. From that inception, Paka has now created a line of washable alpaca apparel and ethical performance outerwear, along with Paka's tried and true sweaters, hoodies and socks. What makes his approach to business stand out is his effort to localize Paka’s supply chain: all of Paka’s alpaca fiber is sourced from free-roaming herds in Peru, 90% of products are manufactured in the country, and over 100 Quechua women weavers are employed (at 4x the living wage in Peru) to craft hand-woven Inca ID’s that appear on all Paka apparel. Paka donates 1% of revenue to Peruvian Hearts, an NGO encouraging the education and empowerment of young women in Peru, to support their PakaScholars program. Last year, Paka launched Traceable Alpaca, which allows customers to see the coordinates in Peru where the fiber of their Paka sweater was sourced. All hand-woven sweaters are signed by their creator – an effort to connect the craftswomen and consumer. Paka has balanced maintaining a community-driven attitude while developing industry-changing innovation in natural fiber. In today's conversation we dive deep into the Paka Story, Kris's unique entrepreneural journey, the power of sustainable clothing, how to have a successful Kickstarter Campaign, and how clothing can help live a outdoor lifestyle. | Secrets of a NBC Page with Shelley Herman | 11 Oct 2023 | 00:56:09
What the behind the scenes stories from the best of NBC Burbank? What really went down between Johnny Carson and Joan Rivers? What was Andy Kaufman like when the 'cameras were off?' Shelley Herman cut her teeth in the world of entertainment during the crazy times of NBC in the 1970s. Tune in to hear all these stories and more. Author SHELLEY HERMAN is an Emmy-nominated show-biz veteran, a longtime host, writer, producer and personality with decades of success on both sides of the camera. Now, she’s taking us back to the beginning of her career – when she joined the famous NBC Studio Page program. My Peacock Tale: Secrets Of An NBC Page is the story of Herman, her fellow pages who became lifelong friends, and the dizzying array of celebrities, hangers-on, has-beens, and legends that found their way through the halls of NBC Burbank in the mid-late 1970s. In what Kirkus Reviews calls “a revealing and often delightful insider’s look at the heyday of network television,” Shelley Herman recalls the almost impossible-to-imagine situations behind the scenes amidst a who’s-who of 1970s entertainment culture. From a trip to see Elvis in Vegas that lead to Shelley getting into the Page program; to literally “breaking a leg” in an encounter that brought her an indelible moment with a musical hero; to being privy to the secrets of Joan Rivers’ feud with Johnny Carson; to all of the interpersonal, professional, and emotional connections forged by Shelley and her friends that would define this as the time of their lives. That’s not counting stories about Andy Kaufman, Richard Pryor, Freddie Prinze, Gilda Radner, Robin Williams, Betty White, ex-Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, Redd Foxx, Frank Sinatra, John Travolta, and other still famous (and some forgotten) giants of film, television, and music. With direct honesty, this celebratory reminiscence offers a unique glimpse into the beginning of a young woman’s career amidst perhaps one of the most dynamic, colorful, and influential moments in recent cultural history. A longtime writer and TV game show production veteran ("Supermarket Sweep"), Shelley Herman is a southern California native who has made a life in show business as a creator and performer, starting as a contestant on "The Dating Game" and eventually writing more than 1000 hours of game shows. Married to actor Randall Carver, the LA resident has been witness to fascinating chapters of TV industry history, and knows that the tales told in My Peacock Tale are just the beginning. | The Deviance of Ideas with Jeff DeGraff | 08 Jun 2021 | 01:03:04
'Innovation Happens at the Edges.' This is a quote that I often reference from today's guest, Jeff DeGraff. Jeff has spent his life exploring, teaching, and sparking creativity and innovation in the lives of those around him. As a teacher at Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan he has helped students understand the practical tools to that unlock that innovation and creativity in their careers. As the co-founder of Innovatriums he helps startups and leading global corporations apply those principles in their product and service development. His new book 'The Creative Mindset: Mastering the Six Skills that Empower Innovation' is quickly becoming a practical handbook and guide to bring those principles from the Ross School of Business and Innovatriums to creators around the world. In the book, Jeff and his business partner / wife Staney take the reader through six skills to move them from the theory of innovation and creativity to the application of these skills in their own daily lives and businesses. This new creator class is redefining the future through positive deviant ideas. Throughtout the interview we learn about the 'CREATE' skills from the book: concentrate, replicate, elaborate, associate, translate, evaluate. Beyond exploring the concepts from the book in today's conversation we also take a look at the differences between Innovation and Creativity, how to find 'Ideas that catch you', Why putting the 'New' into the 'Old' will always fail, finding your stream of consciousness..better known as flow, tools to game the system, and why we need to rethink what we are teaching the next generation of creators. My favorite quote from the conversation: 'What if the key to creativity in your life isn't about starting something new? What if it's stopping something old?' | Playing, Winning, and Coaching in the NBA with Bill Cartwright | 19 May 2021 | 00:54:37
There are many things that young kids dream of growing up to be. One of the dreams of countless kids is to grow up and be a professional basketball player. I know for me, there were few things I liked to do more than shoot hoops in the basketball court behind our house. For many kids born in the 70s and 80s they spent their time watching their favorite teams and players compete in aggressive games. Maybe it was Magic Johnson and the L.A. Lakers. It could have been Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics. As the 90s hit there seemed to be a new powerhouse emerge with Michael Jordan in the Chicago Bulls. I feel fortunate to have grown up with those memories of a time before the internet and the excitement to watch the next great matchup live on TV. There were many big players on the Bulls. Many people quickly think of Michael Jordan and Scotty Pippen. But the 'big guy' on the team was center Bill Cartwright. His career in the NBA started with the New York Knicks but what he is known for is his time with the Bulls and his coaching. Bill won 3 NBA Championships with the Bulls as a player and 2 more as a coach. In today's episode we talk about what it was like to play in the NBA, to play on the NBA Champion Chicago Bulls, playing with Michael Jordan, the difference between playing and coaching, what it takes to be an elite athlete, the power to team, and life beyond the game.

| Understanding the Election of Donald Trump with Cliff Oxford | 27 Apr 2021 | 00:45:44 | |
Everyone has an opinion on why Trump won the election. It had to be race or sexism. It had to be about electing an outsider. I had to do with not wanting a woman president. Racist, Sexist, Misogyny, Bigotry, Bully, Liar are all words that have been used to define Trump and his followers. But emotions and assumptions are not the way you find truth. You much use research, data, interviews, true journalism, and an honest look at not only Tump but also our culture. Cliff Oxford started to question the popular narrative and wanted to discover the truth about the election of Donald Trump. Was it racism, sexism, or something else? His book 'A Redneck Reverie:The Rationale for the Trump Phenomenon' which combines data-driven insights and real life experiences to explain Donald Trump’s election to the White House and the intersection with rural cultures across America. Having lived his life among both country folk and the elite, Cliff has the exact insights needed to not only help explain how we got here, but to provide guidance on the road moving forward. In today's conversation we dive deeper into the discoveries outlined in the book and how over 40 years of changes really led to the election of 2016. Cliff Oxford is founder of CliffCo., an international think tank symposium, and author of A Redneck Reverie: The Rationale for the Trump Phenomenon. A Redneck Reverie is Cliff’s third book. His two previous books, LAMBS (Liberal Arts Majors in Business Society) to Leaders and KNOW GROW EXIT-How Entrepreneurs Start and Finish Fast, continue his unique leadership roles in academia, journalism, and real-world entrepreneurship. Oxford started, built, and sold two national brands: Oxford Center for Entrepreneurs, which sold to Advantage Media and STI Knowledge, an Inc 13 company. Cliff won the Atlanta Entrepreneur of the Year award and landed the highly coveted spot as Visionary and Execution leader in the Gartner Group Magic Quadrant. He has been a featured columnist for The New York Times and Forbes and was named Atlanta’s Entrepreneur of the Year by the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. Later this year, Oxford will be awarded the 2020 Men Impact Change Award by Dr. George E. Holmes of the Black Caucus Foundation ALC. | How You Can Own a Private Jet with Nick Tarascio | 19 Mar 2021 | 00:50:40
Have you ever seen posts about the 'Jet-Setting Lifestyle' and thought to yourself, that looks amazing but I could never do that? Traveling around the world in private jets, staying in the best hotels, freedom at your fingertips. It sounds like luxury and lifestyle only found in your dreams. But more and more business owners, top executives, and families are seeing as more that a luxury, it's about safety. How we travel, where we travel, and how to make that business and vacation travel safe and reliable is at the top of everyone's minds. What once was about is now about safety and convenience. Private aviation is finding a new uptick in a Covid and Post-Covid world. We sat down with Nick Tarascio, the second generation CEO of New York based Ventura Air Services and a license jet pilot to learn how individuals are both using charter services for travel and even taking it a step further and purchasing their own private planes. After seeing a decline in business at the start of Covid, he and the Ventura team are now seeing a rapid growth of private air travel. And while private air travel might not be in everyones reach, it's surprising just how affordable and attainable it can be to take a chartered flight or even make that dream of owing your own plane a reality. For Nick air travel is more than just a lifestyle, being a pilot has taught him how to be a better person. He has taken the lessons he learned and applies what he calls a 'Pilot Mindset' to the aviation, business, and personal world. In today's conversation we talk about travel in the age of Covid, the business of owning a jet (or even a fleet of jets), entrepreneurship, how to have laser focus, and how it's more affordable to own a plane than you could ever imagine. | People Over Projects with Michael Woodward | 12 Feb 2021 | 00:26:59
Recently I started to reassess what I believe. What I believe in business and my personal life. One revelation was that I believe in People over Projects. As a dreamer and idea maker it's easy to lose my way and forget why I chase those ideas and dreams. In business it's easy to get hyper focused on a client project and website I'm building and loose sight of who I'm building it for so that I can get the project wrapped and get paid. In today's episode I explore what it means to be People over Project base. Early in the conversation I talk about my personal experience with people based versus project based organizations. We continue to explore how this plays out in business by looking at objective/tasks and how that impacts our view of those working within a project. Later in the episode I give 7 reasons by people over projects are important for dreamers and idea makers and how it changes the process creating our ideas and dreams.

Do we return to the status quo for education after the Covid-19 Pandemic or do we revision a new future of what education can look like for the future? Many around the country feel like our system is outdated and doesn't set up students for a modern future. In today's episode, we sit down with Nadav Zeimer to learn how as a Principal at a Harlem High School he has helped rethink how we teach our children. But he isn't done yet. He is looking at new ways to bridge the gap between the world of education and industry in all fields. Known as 'Principal Z; he works at the intersection of technology and education. His book 'Education in the Digital Age' is a guide for the future of education. Nadav excelled as a software engineer in Silicon Valley prior to becoming an award-winning physics/robotics teacher, turnaround principal, and public speaker. The transition from software to education started when Zeimer founded a nonprofit focused on hyper-local radio production. As a teacher, Mr. Z integrated podcasting into his curriculum and was selected to lead a school design team. Seven consecutive years of breakthrough student outcomes followed, along with widespread recognition for his digital media-centered approach to school reform. Zeimer promises to end standardized testing in NYC high schools by 2040. Based on nearly two decades of experience, he has launched an open-source, blockchain ledger of "gold standard" high school credits. The Zeimer Family adopted their eldest child from Japan and currently serve as foster parents to a medically fragile child in Harlem. It's time to democratize and decentralized education, bring back freethinking, and foster a new future of innovation and ideas. | Building a Profit First Business with Rocky Lalvani | 14 Aug 2020 | 00:59:09
We all think about the financial health of our lives but many small businesses aren't sure how to build a business that has healthy finances. As our guest, Rocky Lalvani says 'You can't grow your way to profit.' But how do you build a truly healthy business? Rocky recommends trying the profit-first approach. But that doesn't mean it's all about money. True health also looks much deeper than today. It encompasses the lifestyle of the business owner. In this episode, Rocky shares how small business owners can rebuild a healthier and sustainable business and life. It's time to stop responding to the crisis of today and start building a strategy for the future. Growing up as the child of immigrant parents, Rocky saw his Dad build his fortune from a paltry $25 in his pocket using the basic principles of saving, investing, and spending smartly. His mom passed away when he was barely 7 years old and that instilled in him a fierce independence and sense of self-reliance. Over the years, he has built a multimillion-dollar fortune and not from coaching people but from applying the exact advice that he shares on the Richer Soul podcast. Rocky is also an Enrolled Agent and serves as a Virtual CFO for multiple small businesses. | Model, Actress, and Comedian Eugenia Kuzmina | 12 Aug 2020 | 00:53:50
Born in Russia Eugenia Kuzmina didn't expect to become a model, actress, or comedian. Her dream was to become an astronaut. But none of these things seem possible or even expected. Early creative ideas caught her scientist's parents and her early teachers by surprise like the time she made bikinis out of soviet uniforms or snuck into a screening of “Terminator 2“ at five. And then came modeling. It’s not something you can pursue, just the look you have and the Russian designer Slava Zaitzev thought she had a look for his brand and a few others, like M&Ms, RC Cola, and magazines like Vogue and Elle. Then, at 15, came contracts for Dior, L’Oreal, Hermes to travel to France, Tokyo, London, New York. She would wake up in the Amazon Jungle to Shanghai, to the Sahara to New York. Then at 23, she gave it all up to have a baby with a man she fell in love with. It was a big leap of faith. Everyone around her was telling her that her career would be over and that she was making a mistake. But she believed life has its magical ways and things would work out. Not long after Rodrigo Prieto was looking for a model character in a short film, he wanted to direct with Elle Fanning. He was looking for someone who could portray decadence, vanity, and extreme neurosis. Who knew you can share all the dark sides of being human on camera! From then on life has been a rollercoaster of discoveries and stories, like playing a girl of the oldest profession with John Turturro and Woody Allen on the streets on NY, making Zoe Deschanel act even more awkward on “New Girl”, playing an FBI agent with Stana Katic on Castle, being a mean night club host with Danny McBride, Scott Caan and Bill Murray and improvising with Lisa Kudrow on The Comeback, cold killing the main character on ” The Spy City ” with Dominic Cooper and so on. Currently, Eugenia is doing stand up shows at The Comedy Store, Laugh Factory, Flappers in LA, and on tour with a group ” The Nobodies ” @nobodiesfunnytour across the US and later the world.
