| Ep. 71: The Bryan Duncan Interview part 1 | 19 Aug 2024 | 00:47:19 | |
Grammy Award winning songwriter and vocalist Bryan Duncan has had a 50+ year career that began in the Jesus Movement. His seminole group, The Sweet Comfort Band, helped launch modern CCM. After going solo in the mid 1980s, Bryan's soulful vocals, songwriting skills and fun personality, helped him to reach the upper echelon in the CCM world. In this in-depth two-part conversation, Bryan and I cover the earliest of days inside the Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa tent, all the way through to what he's doing today. Bryan's honesty and dry wit made for a truly interesting conversation filled with insights gained by man who has the gift of being able to look back at where he's been. Bryan's music has been deeply meaningful to me for over 40 years, often bringing solace and comfort at just the right time. I am grateful for this other Bryan with a Y. Part 2 will be released on Monday September 1, 2024. Bryan shares his thoughts as he looks back at his long career, and much more. AND there is a surprise appearance by the one and only Phil Keaggy with a special message for Bryan! If you enjoy these meaningful and insightful conversations with artists like this one with Bryan, please share them with others. Thank you so much for listening to a simple guy who loves music and the people who make it. This episode is dedicated to my wonderful son, Luke, who turns 19 today. I love you so much, Pally!! | Ep. 70: Jenn Franklin- Singer/Songwriter | 05 Aug 2024 | 00:43:54
Jenn Franklin is an indie artist that everyone needs to hear. Simply put, Jenn is one of the best indie songwriters and vocalists I have come across since I have been hosting Journey to the Stage. With a powerful voice trained in Rock bands, Jenn can bring a great sense of strength to a song. Along with that potency, Jenn has spent considerable time behind the piano crafting songs that are filled with vulnerability and contemplation, sung with a quiet passion. With her vocal ability paired with a deep sense of melody and lyric creation, Jenn embodies all the elements of a great artist. In this delightful conversation, we chat about Jenn's journey as an artist which started before she sang in a biker bar at age 12. We spend time talking about her brand new album, "Truth About Monsters" and play an incredible song titled "As Far As You Go." Jenn Franklin a great artist to back. | Ep. 61: Emmaline- Alternative R&B and Jazz Vocalist | 25 Mar 2024 | 00:45:30
Emmaline is an artist who can take a song decades old and bring it to life with her magic touch in arranging and sultry vocal delivery. Beyond adding a fresh coat of paint to the great songs of a bygone era, Emmaline writes songs that are fresh and exciting, yet are laced and graced with the feeling of musical nostalgia; songs that will put in a Jazz club of days gone by. In this delightful conversation, Emmaline and I chat about her musical journey and the joys of rearranging songs to create new artistic expressions. We play a wonderful song called "These Are the Memories" from Emmaline's recent project "Retro Kind of Love," which is available now! THANK YOU for supporting great indie artists like Emmaline. | Ep. 60: Shannon Clark and the Sugar | 11 Mar 2024 | 00:40:26
There are some bands that when you hear them for the first time, they just stop you in your tracks and draw you in. That's what happened the first time I heard Shannon Clark and the Sugar. I was honored to be joined by Shannon Clark, the bands vocalist and principle songwriter, for a great chat about music, struggle, and life.
Shannon and I talk a bit about the band's history and how personal loss caused this family musical group to walk away from music for a while. With great stories to tell and the ability to tell those stories with heartfelt Americana hooks and blood harmonies, Shannon Clark and the Sugar is a band everyone should have in their listening rotation, proven by the title track from their latest album, "This Old World" that we play during our chat. To support this wonderful indie band, swing by their website. | Ep. 59: Malcolm Guite- Poet, Professor and Priest (Part 2) | 26 Feb 2024 | 00:36:24
Malcolm Guite is truly a delight to speak with, which made interviewing him a thing of beauty. In this second and final segment, Malcolm and I converse about the film adaptations of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit books, Malcolm shares one of his own beautiful sonnets, and much, much more. I hope those who listen will find this insightful and encouraging. If you have not listened to Part 1, you can find that episode on the platform you are listening on now. My interview with Malcolm and the subsequent episodes are dedicated to two friends and fellow laborers in ministry, Samuel Musgrave and Sean Cox. These are men who love beautiful words and beautiful music; men who know a thing or two about a Ring or two. A special thank you to my dear friend, Phil Keaggy for granting permission to use "When Night Falls" from his wonderful album, "Beyond Nature," an album I fell in love with as a younger man. In this episode I mentioned a book called "The Cotswold Parables" (fully titled "Meeting God in Quite Places: The Cotswold Parables). It is by author F. LaGard Smith, and is a wonderful and recommended read. Pardon my confusion of authorship in the episode. A personal note from Bryan: With well over three million podcasts in existence today, the world of podcasting is immensely crowded and competitive. If you would take 30 seconds and give a kind rating or leave a nice review, subscribe or follow wherever you listen, it helps push this indie podcast higher up in the algorithm and more people find us. I would be ever so grateful. Thank you to Malcolm Guite for his words, his stories, his insights, his time and for a wonderful conversation. | Ep. 58: Malcolm Guite- Poet, Professor and Priest (Part 1) | 12 Feb 2024 | 00:46:46
Malcolm Guite is a man of many facets. He is a poet with a deep appreciation for the classical form and higher realms of language. Equal parts songwriter, author, ordained priest in the Church of England, avid reader and academic, Malcolm brings these beautiful colors into one of the most fascinating conversations I have had on my podcast. Malcolm and I cover a wide range of topics with one of the highlights of this first installment being a reading he does from The Fellowship of the Ring. The longer I spoke to Malcolm, the more I saw in him the affability of Bilbo Baggins, and the wisdom and percipience of Gandalf. I hope all who listen will enjoy this chat as much as I did. --PART 2 will be released on Monday February 26, 2024. | Ep. 57: Maia Sharp- Singer, songwriter, producer | 29 Jan 2024 | 00:44:09
Veteran singer-songwriter Maia Sharp proves once again that she has great songcrafting and storytelling skills with her latest album, "Reckless Thoughts." Maia has written for artists like Trisha Yearwood, Bonnie Raitt and Cher. I first became familiar with Maia's work when she teamed up with Buddy Mondlock to help write and record an album ("Everything Waits to Be Noticed") with legendary vocalist, Art Garfunkel. Maia and I had a great chat about her journey, the twists and turns and struggles as she continues to adapt to the reality of the troubadour life. To top off our conversation, we play a great cut called "Fallen Angel" from her latest album. | Ep. 56: James Horner Remembered with Horner Vocalists Ron Hicklin and Sally Stevens | 15 Jan 2024 | 01:06:19
In this special episode, Sally Stevens and Ron Hicklin give us insight into the creative world of James Horner like very few can. Ron and Sally began working with James in the early 80s as studio vocalists and vocal contractors and their voices can be heard on so many Horner scores like Glory, Apollo 13, Sneakers, Jumanji, Casper, Red Heat, and many more. The stories my guests tell, paint an intimate picture of what it was like to spend countless hours in the studio with James, his work ethic, his perfectionism and his childlike characteristics. Ron Hicklin shares how he became a trusted partner and confidant for James and the bond that they shared. If you are a lover of the works of James Horner, this is a must listen. COMING SOON---- an EXCLUSIVE interview with Sara Horner that is utterly fascinating. Make sure you follow, like or subscribe wherever you’re catching this episode so you don’t miss the release date of that must-hear episode. One of the greatest gifts of being a podcaster has been getting to know Ron Hicklin and Sally Stevens. I am so grateful for both of them, not only for allowing me to help tell their stories, but for the heart they poured into their work for us, and their friendship. Thank you both. This episode is dedicated to two wonderful people- Sally Stevens and Ron Hicklin. To the late James Horner- so many times, as I watch a new movie, I wonder if it would have been you scoring it if you were still with us. | Ep. 55: Beth Bombara- Singer/Songwriter | 02 Jan 2024 | 00:37:26
Beth Bombara is a wonderfully gifted singer, songwriter, musician and storyteller. While she has drawn comparisons to Aimee Mann and Jewel, she brings her unique voice that paints her songs with authenticity and warmth. Those traits shine brightly in and through the conversation we shared on a Fall afternoon. Along with chatting about her journey as an artist and musician, we dive into her latest album, "It All Goes Up," which is one of the best albums I came across in 2023. We play my favorite song from the album, a wonderful song titled "Electricity." I hope you enjoy this chat with Beth as much as I did. Beth Bombara is the type of artist this podcast loves to help promote and shine the light on. The album "It All Goes Up" is OUT NOW and is available to stream on all the services. | Ep. 54: Denny Tedesco- Director of ”The Wrecking Crew” and the NEW film, ”Immediate Family.” | 18 Dec 2023 | 00:36:29
In 2008 Denny Tedesco took the world of music storytelling by storm with the release of the multi-award winning film, "The Wrecking Crew." That hit film told the story of a group of elite studio musicians in Los Angeles that played on countless smash hit songs and albums for every huge artist you can name. As the son of Tommy Tedesco, who is the most recorded session player in history and was part of The Wrecking Crew, Denny had a birds eye view into that world, which helped him tell that story. Denny is back with a brand new film that shines the spotlight on a group of world class musicians that were essential to the creative output of the Singer Songwriter Era. Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar, Russ Kunkel, and Waddy Wachtel helped shape the sounds of artists like James Taylor, Carol King, and countless others. Featuring guests like Linda Ronstadt, David Crosby, Jackson Browne, Lyle Lovett, Keith Richards, Don Henley, Stevie Nicks, Phil Collins, the aforementioned Taylor, King and many others, the storytelling is only topped by the music these timeless artists made. ---IT IS VITAL THAT WE SUPPORT THIS FILM!--- BUY TICKETS to go see the film while it's in theatres by clicking here: https://magpictures.com/immediatefamily/screenings WATCH ON Video On Demand: https://magpictures.com/immediatefamily/watch-at-home Film Website: https://www.immediatefamilyfilm.com/ A huge thank you to Denny for joining me. | Ep. 53: Robin Taylor Zander | 04 Dec 2023 | 00:35:48
Singer-songwriter, Robin Taylor Zander, son of Cheap Trick vocalist, Robin Zander, took advantage of the instruments he grew up around by learning to play a variety of them. Spending summers on the road with his dad and soaking in the sonics of Rock from his earliest days helped form RTZ into a songwriter with an exceptional sense of melody and songcrafting. As a touring member of Cheap Trick, where he has filled in on drums, bass, and lead guitar as the need arose, RTZ has become an integral part of the band as a rhythm guitar player and background vocalist. Robin's DEBUT album, The Distance, is out NOW, and it is an album of high caliber that I HIGHLY recommend. In our chat, RTZ talks about growing up in a Rock n Roll family, how he became part of Cheap Trick, and writing and recording his new album and much more. This is a fun chat with a genuine artist with great writing and performing prowess. We play the first cut from the album, a catchy tune that wears its Beatles influence on its sleeve, titled, "What Am I to Do?" Catch RTZ on the road as he plays in support of The Distance. Check out his Linktree for all the links you will need to buy music, merch, keep up with RTZ's socials and get info about shows. Click here for RTS's Linktree: https://linktr.ee/rtzmusic

| Ep. 52: Carol Kaye- The Comprehensive Interview Pt. 2 | 21 Nov 2023 | 00:44:33 | |
In this final segment of my in-depth conversation with the Queen of Bass Guitar, Carol Kaye, we chat about her work with Motown, which was kept very quiet and we examine some of Carol's most iconic bass lines and how they were created. Carol talks about how her intro to "Wichita Lineman" was an accident in some respects. I get Carol's thoughts about what it was like to work the biggest artists and producers, names like Quincy Jones, Brian Wilson, Phil Spector and others. As one of the last remaining members of The Wrecking Crew, Carol talks about what it's like to look back on her struggles, her career, the people she worked with, and the music she made. This episode is not one to miss. A BIG thank you to Carol, for sharing her gift and for sharing her time. As an indie podcaster, I would love your help. | Ep. 69: Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul, and Mary | 15 Jul 2024 | 00:53:50
Peter, Paul and Mary, the iconic folk trio of the 1960s, achieved remarkable success and left an indelible mark on the American music landscape and social conscience. With their rich and unforgettable harmonies and lyrics that led the charge for societal change, they became the voice of a generation, producing timeless hits like "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Leaving on a Jet Plane." Their influence extended beyond music, contributing significantly to the Civil Rights and Anti-War movements of the era. Following the group's disbandment, Noel Paul Stookey embarked on a solo career, where he continued to enchant audiences with his poignant songwriting and soulful performances. His solo work, characterized by its spiritual and introspective themes, further solidified his reputation as a distinguished and impactful artist in the folk music genre. In this most memorable conversation, Noel and I cover the span of his life, from learning what harmony is by singing as a child with his father, through the highs of Peter, Paul, and Mary, to his wonderful solo career. The highlight is being treated to a special performance of "Wedding Song (There is Love)"
Noel is one of my musical heroes, whose voice has been part of my life for as long as I could remember, and it was a great honor to have such a delightful conversation with him.
If you enjoy these meaningful and insightful conversations with artists, please share them with others. Thank you so much for listening to a simple guy who loves music and the people who make it.

| Ep. 51: Carol Kaye- The Comprehensive Interview Pt. 1 | 06 Nov 2023 | 00:54:59 | |
Carol Kaye is a towering musical legend who's considered to be one of the most prolific bassists in Rock and Pop music history. With over 10,000 recording sessions under her belt, and an integral part of The Wrecking Crew studio musicians, Carol recorded with them all- The Beach Boys, Glen Campbell, Frank Sinatra, The Righteous Brothers, Simon & Garfunkel (to name a few), and helped give birth to Rock n Roll by playing on songs like "La Bamba" and "Donna" by Ritchie Valens. In the Spring of 2023, Carol and I spent two hours on the phone together, in what amounts to be one the most comprehensive interviews Carol has done. We cover lots of ground and any fan of Carol's career, legacy, and music history, will enjoy what Carol shares. - Part 2 of this interview can be found on all the podcast platforms and is slated to be released on Monday November 20. | J1Q #1: What was it like to sing with Elvis? | 13 Oct 2023 | 00:11:28
Very few people had the distinct pleasure of singing with the King of Rock n' Roll, Elvis Presley, but both of my guests DID! Ron Hicklin and Sally Stevens are two living legends in the vocal world. Many have heard of "The Wrecking Crew" studio musicians who played on endless smash hits on some of the greatest music ever made. Sally and Ron, and their respective team of vocalists are the equivalent to that famous group of musicians. Listen in as Ron and Sally answer the question: What was it like to sing with Elvis Presley? To hear my interview with Sally Stevens, look for episode 19. And to hear my interview with Ron Hicklin, listen to episode 28 wherever you listen to podcasts. J1Q (Just 1 Question) is the new mini-episode sub-podcast of Journey to the Stage with Bryan Frazier. | Ep. 50: Phil Keaggy (Part 2) | 14 Aug 2023 | 01:01:53
In this concluding portion of my in-depth conversation with legendary guitarist and artist, Phil Keaggy, we cover a wide range of topics. We talk about what makes his playing style unique, what it was like to meet and play music with Paul McCartney, and what Phil prefers these days to being on the road. The conversation moves to things like when Phil feels most creative, what advice would he would share with his younger self, and the joy of collaboration, and much much more. Phil plays two beautiful songs in-studio for us and we hear from Choir drummer and lyricist, Steve Hindalong, Phil's long-time pal, Randy Stonehill, and a special message from a 50 year fan of Phil's, Dan Morrow. A special thank you to Phil for his time, his music, his voice and his friendship. | Ep. 49: Phil Keaggy (Part 1) | 31 Jul 2023 | 00:50:52
This UpClose and Personal conversation with legendary guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer, Phil Keaggy, is truly one of the greatest I've had since starting Journey to the Stage. Phil has won 7 GMA Dove Awards and has been nominated for multiple Grammys. Our chat is filled with laughs and wonderful storytelling by one of my great musical heroes. We cover lots of ground in Part 1 of this extensive deep dive into the events that have helped shape Phil, both as a man, and as an artist. With several friends stopping by to express their affection for Phil and a handful of in-studio performances of some of my favorite songs from Phil's vast catalogue, this is something any Phil Keaggy fan would not want to miss. The greatest part of this conversation for me, is the friend that I have gained in Phil. He is a thoughtful and considerate friend, who loves God and loves people. | Ep. 48: Florence Dore | 17 Jul 2023 | 00:44:04
Florence Dore and I sat for a great conversation about her journey as a singer, songwriter, author and professor. Florence's latest album, "Highways and Rocketships" is a delightful blend of Rock, Americana and Folk. The songs are wonderfully crafted, filled with melodic hooks, superb musical performances, and Florence's lovely voice and creative lyrics. With production and creative assistance by original dB and current Steve Earl band drummer, husband Will Rigsby, this album was destined to be the easy album to love that it is. Florence and I chat about how her three seemingly disparate career paths form a unified, satisfying and creative pallet for her to be able to express herself on. In the final segment of the UpClose & Personal conversation with multi-Grammy and multi-Dove Award winning vocalist, John Schlitt, we dig into the Petra years. From his arrival as Petra's new vocalist and working with power producers, John and Dino Elefante, John peels the curtain back and and gives us unfettered access to what went on behind the scenes. We touch on some of Petra's biggest albums like, Back to the Street, This Means War, Petra Praise, and Beyond Belief. John shares with us what the last days of Petra were like and what lead up to retirement of the greatest Christian Rock band of all-time. We end our conversation talking about John's great solo career and play a cut from his latest solo album, "Go." With Petra's 50th Anniversary in full swing, we dig into that and what lies ahead. A BIG thank you to John for being so generous with his time and for sharing a word of encouragement for a friend and fellow Petra fan, Thor Lundberg, who is battling ALS. | Ep. 46: John Schlitt (Part 1) | 26 Jun 2023 | 00:48:18
In Part 1 of this Upclose & Personal conversation with multi-Grammy and multi-Dove Award winning vocalist John Schlitt, we spend considerable time walking through his formative years and the impact of bands like The Beach Boys and Beatles. Long before he was the vocalist of the most powerful and impactful band in Christian Rock history, John found success in the Rock band, Head East, where drug and alcohol abuse would bring him to the lowest of low points. But that is NOT the end of John's journey, and John shares about how he disappeared for several years, only to be found by Petra founder, Bob Hartman. John shares his deep and personal feelings about the Petra songs, "Thankful Heart" and "Prayer," and we chat about the first time I saw Petra on the Back to the Streets Tour on 9/25/86 at Point Loma Nazarene College (San Diego) and a moment that has stuck with me for 37 years. There is MUCH to come in Part 2 that you DO NOT want to miss. Part 2 releases on July 3, 2023. To keep up with ALL of John's bands and projects, please visit https://www.johnwschlitt.com/fans/index2.htm Get your tickets for PETRA'S 50th Anniversary Tour! https://www.petraband.com/ A very special thank you to John Schlitt for being so open and transparent, and so generous with his time. I met John first in September of 1986 just before the band was going to take the stage. He was so kind to my 16 year old self and he asked me to pray for him and the band. Each time I've chatted with John since, he has always been genuine. I truly thank the Lord for him, Bob Hartman, the rest of the band, for the immeasurable impact the ministry of Petra had on a kid with long hair who was trying to figure out where he fit in the church.

| Ep. 45: Jaimee Harris | 12 Jun 2023 | 00:53:52 | |
Jaimee Harris isn't merely a rising star in the Americana-Folk-Singer/Songwriter universe. With the release of her new album, 'Boomerang Town," Jaimee steps up to the mic and stakes a claim among her peers and shows that she stands shoulder to shoulder in storytelling, melody-making and song crafting, with many of those whom she looks up to. Though closer to the beginning of her adventure than many Journey to the Stage guests, Jaimee has a story worth hearing and music that is thoughtful and thought-provoking and beautiful. Jaimee and I play two wonderful songs from her new album, the title track, "Boomerang Town," which tells the story of her hometown, and "Missing Someone," a song of distant love. Blue Water Highway stands at the top of the list of bands I have come across in the last several years, so it was a real honor for me to sit down with founding members Zack Kibodeaux (primary vocalist and multi-instrumentalist) and Greg Essington (multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, would-be zombie apocalypse survivor). In this fun and insightful conversation, we dig into the band's origins, their recording history and the hard work they've put into getting to where they are in an often hostile music environment. With the release of their BRAND NEW album, "Year of the Dragon" slated for September, we play a couple of the singles that band has released from it and dig into their back story. | Ep. 43: Stephen McCarthy: Multi-instrumentalist, Songwriter, Vocalist. | 15 May 2023 | 00:52:10
Stephen McCarthy has been at the leading edge of genre creation, a claim few can make. With the founding of The Long Ryders in the early 80s, the band was helping lay the foundation for what would eventually be called "Americana." Stephen walks us through the rise, fall, and return of The Long Ryders. We dig into the band's BRAND NEW album, 'September November," and play the song, "Seasons Change," a McCarthy composition. Stephen and I spend some time chatting about how he joined Americana greats, The Jayhawks, for their classic album, "Rainy Day Music," and the subsequent tour. Part of our Jayhawks related conversation reveals how Jayhawks founder, Mark Olson, was almost a member of The Long Ryders. With recent release of "When Night Comes Falling," an album Stephen made with famed producer and songwriter, Carla Olson, we play the title track and get the backstory on that decades long friendship and the wonderful album that friendship produced. If you are a fan of Stephen and his work, you will enjoy this in-depth conversation that starts with his artist origin story. | Ep. 68: Composer Bear McCreary | 01 Jul 2024 | 00:59:42
Over the last 20+ years, Emmy Award winning composer Bear McCreary has created a beautiful, powerful and impressive body of work that spans across media forms. With sprawling musical diversity, Bear has composed for video games, television and film, becoming one of the most sought-after composers in Hollywood. Bear's credits include "The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power," "The Walking Dead," "Battlestar Galactica (2004)," "Agents of SHIELD," and countless more. In this in-depth interview, Bear and I talk about his earliest days, falling in love with the music of movies at age 5. We spend considerable time discussing a teenage Bear's chance meeting with film music pillar, Elmer Bernstein, and how that meeting would change Bear's life forever. We ended our time talking about Bear's debut Rock concept album, "The Singularity." This powerhouse album features musical greats like Slash, Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Rufus Wainwright, Corey Taylor (Slipknot), and many more. As a natural-born storyteller, Bear began writing segments of the story as a teen. "The Singularity" is available on all streaming platforms. A heartfelt thank you to Bear for his time and the wonderful and insightful conversation. A special thank you to Joe Augustine and Marisa Gunzenhauser from Spark & Shadows for greenlighting and logistical help to make my chat with Bear possible. Trapper Schoepp is a musical force to be reckoned with. His brand new album, "Siren Songs," is his strongest effort to date, and was recorded in the Cash Cabin, a retreat and private recording studio built by the legendary Man in Black, himself, Johnny Cash. With fourteen songs in hand, Trapper arrived at the fabled cabin with Jayhawks multi-instrumentalist, John Jackson, and Wilco basset, Pat Sansone to produce Trapper's new album. Trapper and I dig into his musical journey and how he ended up the youngest person to share a songwriting credit with another musical legend, Bob Dylan. You will hear two great cuts from "Siren Songs" during the episode and hear Trap and I chat about his experience touring with Americana powerhouse bands like Old 97 and The Jayhawks, and even how I got to introduce Trapper years ago at a show in San Diego. | Ep. 41: Glen Phillips (part 2)- Toad the Wet Sprocket, solo artist | 17 Apr 2023 | 00:43:47
This is part two of a very in depth and open conversation I had with Glen Phillips. In this portion of our chat, Glen shares what led to the demise of Toad the Wet Sprocket and how those relational patterns have changed in a way that allows the band to stay together after reforming. Glen shares about how the band sought to differentiate themselves from their contemporaries in the music world and how that trait has helped them maintain an audience. We dive into deep topics like grief, the enduring pursuit of emotional high points, how they can be addictive and how being on stage can feed into that. Our chat moves into songwriting, where Glen gives the fullest answer I have heard him give to date regarding what he requires to be creative and how that has gotten harder over time. In a moment of true transparency, Glen gives insight into the one thing that has robbed him of countless songs. We play a song from Glen's latest solo album ("There is So Much Here"), a song titled "The Sound of Drinking," a song I rank as one of Glen's greatest compositions. IF YOU ARE A FAN OF TOAD AND GLEN'S SOLO WORK, please be mindful of the horrendous economy that streaming has created for artists and bands. If you want to make sure Glen and Toad can continue to make music, please consider directly supporting them by buying albums, supporting livestreams when they occur, going to shows and buying some merch. A very heartfelt and special thank you to Glen for being so generous with his time on a beautiful Friday morning, and for being such an authentic and thoughtful guest. | Ep. 39 Dan Murphy of The Scarlet Goodbye, Soul Asylum | 27 Mar 2023 | 00:43:45
As a founding member of multi-platinum selling Soul Asylum, and super group, The Golden Smog, which features members of Wilco, The Jayhawks, Big Star and Run Westy, Run, Grammy Award-winning Dan Murphy has spent decades creating a catalog of great music. Despite his success, in 2012 Dan put his guitar in its case and walked away from music, citing burnout and a lack of joy in playing. After roughly ten years away, a chance meeting of singer/songwriter Jeff Arundel would reignite Dan's dormant love of writing, playing and recording music- and out came his trusty gold top Les Paul. The resulting album from this musical odd couple is nothing short of incredible. Dan and I spend some time talking about the rise, plateau and challenges of Soul Asylum. From having multi-platinum selling albums and winning a Grammy, to not being on speaking terms, Dan walks us through it all with a lighthearted honesty. We talk Golden Smog and the possibility of a new album from that band that has been quiet since 2007. Dan shares how he's found joy again in writing and recording music, and we play a couple of cuts from The Scarlet Goodbye's debut album, "Hope's Eternal." The album is OUT NOW and I give it 5 out of 5 stars. It's a gem of an album. | Ep.38 Glen Phillips (part 1)- Toad the Wet Sprocket, solo artist | 20 Mar 2023 | 00:42:47
It was an honor to connect with one of my favorite vocalist, songwriters and lyricists, Glen Phillips. Glen is the voice and principal songwriter for Toad the Wet Sprocket, a band he helped form when he was just 15. This "Upclose & Personal" special interview is filled with an honest and open dialogue about the early years of the band, how critics impacted Glen, and the realization that there is beauty in embracing grief. Glen opens up about how the community that formed online around his music during the lockdown has helped him to see the audience in a very different way. We talk at length about songs such as "I Will Not Take These Things for Granted," and much, much more. If you are a fan of Glen's wonderful solo career and Toad the Wet Sprocket, you will love this authentic conversation. Part 2 will be released on April 17, 2023. Glen gives a very honest accounting of what lead Toad to call it a day and some of the work that had to take place in order for them to become a band again. We talk songwriting and Glen discusses the one thing that has robbed him of many songs. As a huge fan of Glen's solo work, I move the discussion to that topic and we play a beautiful song from his latest solo album, a song that ranks up there with Glen's finest. | Ep. 37: Sir, Please | 06 Mar 2023 | 00:50:24
"Sir, Please" is a brilliant band whose days of making a splash on the musical scene are just getting started. In a Journey to the Stage first, I was joined by the entire band, which includes twins Shane (vocals) and Josh (bass) Cronin, Michael Leese (guitar) and drummer David Kohn. We dig into the band's origin story and all the fun and challenges that come with developing a unique sound. In this blast of a conversation, the band discusses what it's like playing to a packed venue in support of REO Speedwagon, compared to a club of bouncing fans. We play two outstanding songs from the band's debut album, "Simply Loved and Lingered On," which lovers of good music will enjoy thoroughly. If you like alternative pop rock (and you should), you will love "Sir, Please." This is a fun conversation filled with laughter with some very talented musicians and writers. | Ep. 34: Michael Lockwood- Producer, Guitarist, Songwriter. | 30 Jan 2023 | 00:54:10
Michael Lockwood has had a long and fascinating musical career. He has worked with artists like the late (and former spouse) Lisa Marie Presley, Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, Carly Simon, Susanna Hoffs and many more, as a songwriter, producer, touring or studio musician. This one-time son in law of Elvis Presley had his first foray into the musical spotlight with his band, Lions & Ghosts, where Michael was a cowriter and guitar player. Lions & Ghosts' first album, "Velvet Kiss, Lick of the Lime" has just been remastered, rereleased, and made available digitally for streaming for the first time. The powerfully anthemic album is an unknown gem that is filled with great hooks, timeless production and musical and vocal performances that exemplify the best of 80s Rock n Roll. Giving this album a spin will show the listener why Lions & Ghosts were taken on the road with powerhouse bands like Guns N Roses, The Church, Gene Loves Jezebel, Love and Rockets, The Alarm and many more. Michael and I walk through his colorful musical journey and play a cut from the newly rereleased "Velvet Kiss, Lick of the Lime," and their BRAND NEW single, "Gurl I Luv You." The album and new single are available on all the streaming services. This episode is dedicated to Lisa Marie Presley. Ben Balmer and I had such an enjoyable chat, and I hope you thoroughly enjoy it. Ben is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist of great talent. His harmonica playing drips with great emotive resonance and brings a unique feel to his music. Ben's new album, "Honky-Tonk Macbeth" is truly worth checking out. | Episode 32: Wayne Kirkpatrick- Multi-Grammy, and Tony Award winning Songwriter, Producer, Playwriter. | 02 Jan 2023 | 01:11:01
With several decades in the music industry, Wayne Kirkpatrick has had a monumental career that shows no signs of slowing down. In the early 80s, Wayne formed partnerships and friendships with Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith and would go on to co-write with both of them for many years and many albums, helping to write some of the most popular songs in the CCM space. The impact Wayne has had in the careers of those two great talents cannot be overstated. Along with Tommy Simms and previous Journey to the Stage guest, Gordon Kennedy, Wayne co-wrote "Change the World," which was made popular by Eric Clapton, for which Wayne won a Grammy for Song of the Year. That group of three writers (Kirkpatrick, Simms and Kennedy) wrote all of the music for Garth Brook's album, "In the Life of Chris Gaines." Songs Wayne has written have been sung by artists like Faith Hill, Peter Frampton, Joe Cocker, Rich Mullins, Bonnie Raitt, Trisha Yearwood and many many more. Wayne and his brother Karey Kirkpatrick, who is a very successful movie director, producer and screenwriter (Chicken Run, The Rescuers Down Under, James and the Giant Peach and many more) wrote the smash-hit Broadway musical, "Something Rotten," which was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, and winner of one. Currently the Kirkpatrick brothers are taking the new musical adaptation of "Mrs. Doubtfire" (for which they wrote the music and lyrics) to stage in England with plans to bring it to the States and to Broadway. This conversation with Wayne is filled with stories from the "inside" of the CCM world. Wayne pulls the curtain back on the herculean effort it takes to write a musical, revealing a personal side to the adventure so rarely seen by the public. I hope you all enjoy it. IF YOU DO enjoy this conversation, please consider leaving a review. With several million podcasts in existence, it can be a challenge in getting people's attention. When you leave a review, rating, or follow Journey to the Stage, it helps the algorithm go to work and helps others find us. Thank so much :-).

| Episode 31: Wayne Everett- The Lassie Foundation, Prayer Chain, solo artist | 19 Dec 2022 | 00:53:15 | |
Wayne Everett is a gifted multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and songwriter with a musical history that spans decades. He has been an integral part of bands like The Prayer Chain, Starflyer59, The Lassie Foundation and CUSH- all bands that have made incredible music but are criminally underexposed. As a solo artist, Wayne has written and recorded two solo albums, the latest of which is titled, "Two Ghosts," a collection of wonderfully-crafted songs with echoes of Laurel Canyon reverberating throughout. Wayne and I walk through his musical journey, the various bands he's been in and discuss the new EP released by The Lassie Foundation called "The Cave Sessions" along with the new songs The Lassies aim to release in 2023. If you're not familiar with music Wayne has made, you can hear a couple songs we play in this episode; one from The Lassie Foundation and one from Wayne's latest solo project. | Episode 28: Ron Hicklin- Legendary Vocalist | 04 Nov 2022 | 01:10:49
You might not know the name Ron Hicklin, but you certainly know his voice. Ron and his singing group, "The Ron Hicklin Singers," sang on over 100 #1 hit songs with artists like Sinatra, Elvis, Dean Martin, Neil Diamond, Barbara Streisand, Ringo Starr, Glen Campbell, Michael Jackson, The Carpenters, and many, many more. His group is considered "The Wrecking Crew" of vocalists, and frequently recorded on albums with that famous group of world class studio musicians. Ron's group provided the vocals (along with David Cassidy) for The Partridge Family. Ron was a "ghost singer" for The Monkees, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, The Lettermen, and others, being featured vocally, but often uncredited and unknown by the public. For 40 years, Ron and others he hired, were the singing voices of Alvin and the Chipmunks on albums like "The Chipmunks Sing The Beatles' Hits." Through the 60s and 70s, The Ron Hicklin Singers sang scores of TV theme songs for shows like Batman, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Love, American Style and countless others. The memorable commercial jingle, "You Deserve a Break Today" for McDonalds and many dozens more were sung by Ron and his group. Ron's ubiquitous group of world class singers, including a previous podcast guest, Sally Stevens, lent their vocal talent to film score in hundreds of films like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Glory, Apollo 13, The Godfather and on and on. In our wonderful conversation, Ron shares rich stories about his friendships with Glen Campbell and Leon Russell. He shares how a recording session with Elvis for the 1968 Comeback Special, made a fan out of Ron. If you love music, this chat reveals a slice of music history that is unparalleled. Ron has been retired for many years and doesn't do many interviews, so this is a genuine treat. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

| Episode 27: Rescuing 70s Elvis with John Jackson | 19 Oct 2022 | 00:50:16 | |
The Elvis Presley of the 1970s long ago achieved caricature status. The Elvis impersonators and the Pop Culture icon of the true Elvis have little in common. In this Special Edition of Journey to the Stage, Rock n Roll historian, John Jackson, helps us dismantle the ever shortening narrative of 70s Elvis that has been reduced to the point of excluding most of the highlights. With his vast and extensive study into the life and career of arguably the most famous music and movie star the world has ever seen, John helps us have a fuller understanding of who Elvis was during the last segment of his career and the great music he was making. Our goal-- to rescue 70s Elvis.
John Jackson, is a very talented multi-instrumentalist and producer, who earned the nation's first Bachelor's degree in Rock History, from the University of Indiana's renowned Music Department. John has produced, recorded and toured with The Jayhawks and was the VP of Sony Music's Legacy division, where among many other historical projects, he was tasked to work with others on the Elvis catalogue. John also was my very first podcast guest, which is a conversation that I highly recommend. | Episode 26: The Smithereens (Drummer Dennis Diken) | 11 Oct 2022 | 00:43:06
As a 35 year fan of the music of The Smithereens, it was a genuine pleasure to chat with founding member and drummer, Dennis Diken. We discuss the path the band has traveled, navigating the heights of success and the sadness of losing singer an band mate, the late Pat Dinizio. Dennis and I spend most of our time discussing The Smithereen's brand new album (out now!!!), which was recorded in the early 90s with Pat on vocals, and how it sat until recently when it was made ready for release. We play a couple cuts from the album and dig into their backstory. If you are a fan of The Smithereens, no doubt you will love this conversation with Dennis. If you're not familiar with their music, this is a great introduction to the vastly influential band as they celebrate over 40 years in Rock n Roll. Dennis is very down to Earth, and as you will hear in our chat, he still feels connected to the 20-something year old musicians who would sit around the dinner table in Pat's house and dream of hitting it big. Trevor's music has been streamed over one hundred million times, and music he has in various films and videos have been listened to over one billion times. He has worked with award-winning filmmakers, game developers, orchestras, and soloists.
The music Trevor creates is soul-stirring and evocative, filled with nostalgia and brimming with beauty. In our chat we discuss Trevor's earliest of years and how they shaped him as a musician and composer. We listen to two compositions and dig into their backstories. One piece we play and discuss is a piece called "Rest Upon the Edge," which is simply one of the most stunning compositions I have ever heard. We also play a selection titled "Meditation - Drum Edit," which helps show the range of this composer's great skill. Beyond the two pieces we play in this episode awaits a catalogue of wonderful music that I am certain will enrich your life like it has mine. | Episode 24: Rain Perry- Singer/Songwriter | 13 Sep 2022 | 00:39:24
Rain Perry and I sat for delightful chat about her brand new album, "A White Album." This album is a wonderful collection of songs filled with powerful storytelling and melodic beauty. We play two songs from the album and spend a bit of time talking about the story they tell, which is a fascinating portion of our time together. Along with creating a lovely catalogue of work spanning over two decades as a recording artist, we discuss the documentary film that Rain made. Her film, "The Workshop," tells the story of the shift in the music industry from selling albums to the world of streaming, but not in a remote and cold way, but through the life and career of one man, a studio owner and producer. Rain is a testament of how a person can react to challenges and make something beautiful out of it. This conversation will encourage all who listen.

| Ep. 66: The Staudt Brothers | 10 Jun 2024 | 00:44:57 | |
This may be the debut album of the Staudt Brothers, but these Texas gents are musical veterans. Their new album, "Livewire Priest," is filled with songs that are road tested and built on a foundation of memorable hooks, gritty guitars, powerhouse vocals, and a rhythm section that is taking no prisoners. Produced by fellow-Texans Zack Kibodeaux, Greg Essington and Kyle Smith of Blue Water Highway, "Livewire Priest" is stirring up some Texas dust and is an album that needs to be heard. This chat with Caleb Staudt (lead vocals, guitar, and principal songwriter) and David Stockton (bass, goat harmonizer. True story) was a blast and a half. Blue Water Highway's Zack Kibodeaux makes an (almost) surprise appearance to talk about working with the band in the studio. | Episode 21: M Ross Perkins- Singer/Songwriter | 25 Jul 2022 | 00:46:35
M Ross Perkins is a multi-instrumentalist, and singer/songwriter, who draws the best of psychedelic rock sound into the modern age. His song crafting has been compared to that of Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney and Harry Nilsson. With an incredible sense of melody and a novel approach to songwriting, the result is music carries the soul of the 60s without being mere revivalist. M Ross and I had a great conversation that music lovers will enjoy. We play two songs from his brand new album titled, "E Pluribus M Ross." This episode is dedicated to Mark Feldbush- a lover of great music and the one who (accidentally) turned me on to M Ross' music. | Episode 20: Graeme James- Singer/Songwriter | 18 Jul 2022 | 00:39:50
New Zealand singer/songwriter, Graeme James and I sat for a chat about his lovely new album titled, "Seasons." Graeme (pronounced gray-um) really is a brilliantly gifted songwriter and performer. There is a heart and soul to his music that I find captivating. We play and chat about two songs from "Seasons," "The Sea of Infinite Possibilities" which about the birth of his little girl, and a great story song, "The Voyage of the James Caird," which tells the real life story of a voyage gone dreadfully wrong.
There is an intimacy and fine crafting in Graeme's music that listeners will connect with instantly.

| Episode 19: Sally Stevens- Iconic vocalist, actress and songwriter. | 08 Jul 2022 | 01:11:12 | |
This is a MUST listen episode if there ever has been one. Sally Stevens has a voice you heard on many of the most beloved film scores and TV shows ever made. She has recorded and/or toured with the biggest stars including Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Andy Williams, Burt Bacharach, Ray Conniff, Dean Martin and many more. Sally has worked with Hollywood's greatest film composers like John Williams, Alan Sylvestri, Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, Danny Elfman and so many more, where her voice can be heard in hundreds of films such as The Sound of Music, Forrest Gump, Jumanji, Beetlejuice, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Deadpool 2. She also sang on the great variety shows of the 60s and 70s like The Danny Kaye Show, Red Skeleton Show and the Carol Burnett show.
If you have watched an episode of The Simpsons, you have heard Sally, her daughter (Susie Stevens-Logan) and Danny Elfman singing "The Simpsons" as the show theme begins.
In this unforgettable episode, Sally and I walk through her 60 year career as an actress, vocalist, Hollywood contractor, songwriter and trusted partner to directors like Steven Spielberg. Sally has many great stories to tell about things like touring with Nat King Cole and the racism the African-American singers faced in the early 60s. We cover a lot of ground but merely scratch the surface.
To learn more about the wonderful Sally Stevens and her legendary career, pick up a copy of Sally's memoir! The book is schedule to release on (or around) August 15, 2022. You can get updates at https://www.sallystevenswriter.com/
I am so grateful for Sally being so generous with her time and sharing her fascinating stories and insights. Sally is an absolute sweetheart and I am so thankful for a new delightful friend.
