Dissolving Obscurations in the Innate Openness of Presence. [EN-PL] Wilga 05.202603 Oct 202608:18:53

Dissolving Obscurations in the Innate Openness of Presence

A Dzogchen retreat with James Low in Wilga, Poland, held May 21–24, 2026. The teachings were given with Polish translation.

"From the point of view of dzogchen, collaboration and participation are much more important than dominance and control. That is to say, we relax and find ourselves within the field of our participation. The world reveals itself as we reveal ourselves – nothing is fixed and everything moves together. The field of experience is responsive yet will always slip out of our attempts at total control. The one who wants control is the one who is already in duality."
~ James Low

Original audio in English with consecutive Spanish translation by Juan B. García Lázaro.

Approaching Non-Duality. [EN] Todtmoos 04.202627 Aug 202604:02:53

James Low's Dzogchen retreat "Approaching Non-Duality" took place 23rd-26th April 2026 in Todtmoos, Germany.

James Low writes: "The traditional structure of Buddhist teachings is that each level or vehicle has its own View, Meditation, Activity and Result. Over the years I have focused on making the various views and meditations as clear as possible. I feel that our retreats now need to have increasing emphasis on your activity and proactive learning."

He continues: "We all have a lot of life experience and so how can we mobilise this experience to become an ally on our path instead of an obstacle? Rather than relying on our habitual assumptions and conclusions, our practice is to investigate how our subjectivity arises in different situations. We aim to locate the ground (or basis) for our subjective thoughts, feelings and actions in our simple presence within the ever-open here and now."

The retreat featured morning teachings by James Low, with afternoon small group activities led by experienced sangha members. The aim in Dzogchen is to see the self-vanishing of each moment by ripening our presence without engaging in dualistic reificatory judgement.

https://simplybeing.co.uk/events/approaching-non-duality-todtmoos-april-2026/

James Low, April 2026, writes:

"The traditional structure of Buddhist teachings is that each level or vehicle has its own View, Meditation, Activity and Result. Over the years I have focused on making the various views and meditations as clear as possible and you can access these through my many audio and video recordings, books and transcripts.

I feel that our retreats now need to have increasing emphasis on your activity and proactive learning.

We all have a lot of life experience and so how can we mobilise this experience to become an ally on our path instead of an obstacle? Rather than relying on our habitual assumptions and conclusions, our practice is to investigate how our subjectivity arises in different situations. We aim to locate the ground (or basis) for our subjective thoughts, feelings and actions in our simple presence within the ever-open here and now.

I will be teaching in the mornings. In the afternoons there will be small group activities led by experienced members of our sangha. They will offer a range of activities and I am encouraging you all to try them out so that you can experience what you can make use of (or not) at each moment in time. The key point is for you to observe what arises for you as you engage with each activity in your ever-changing environment.

The aim in dzogchen is to see the self-vanishing of each moment. We do this by ripening our presence without engaging in dualistic reificatory judgement."

Supporting minority groups. Zoom 05.2026 (Saga Dawa Düchen)13 Jun 202600:58:05

May 31st 2026. James Low talked about compassion in action and supporting minority groups such as the Huni Kuin in the Amazon. Bellow you can read more about this group and how to support them here.

This event was taking place on the full moon day (Saga Dawa) of the 4th month in the Tibetan calendar. It commemorates such major events of Sakyamuni Buddha’s life as his birth, awakening, and parinirvāṇa. The Tibetans consider that any positive or negative karma we create during this month is multiplied 100,000 times.

🌳 AMAZONIAN 🐆 WORLD 🌎 SANCTUARY

💎 Compassionate call 🙏

In the heart of the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest, the Huni Kuin indigenous people are experiencing a rebirth of their identity after decades of slavery and oppression, since the time when they were captured in the forests and forbidden from living their culture. It was only from the year 2000 onwards that the Huni Kuin of the Humaitá Indigenous Land began to remember who they were, coming together to recall their culture and their ancestral, spiritual way of life. After more than 20 years of strengthening, the communities of the Indigenous Land are today living through a cultural peak.

All at Once. [EN-TR] Izmir 10.202516 Feb 202604:06:18

10th - 14th October 2025. All at Once. Teaching and Meditation retreat led by James Low at Şirince Village, Selçuk, in İzmir, Turkey.

https://simplybeing.co.uk/events/all-at-once-teaching-retreat-izmir-oct-2025/

PS: This recording contains only the second half of the retreat.

Organised by Mustafa Mert Çelebi, Sevgi Çakıcı and Trevor Brown.

The focus of this retreat is seeing how we limit our potential by hanging on to habits and impulses which do not function well in the world in which we find ourselves. Dzogchen, the Great Completion, is the heart of Tibetan Buddhism and it offers us a way to release ourselves from the limiting ideas that we have of ourselves so that the freshness of our simple presence can illuminate our life in a new way.

These teachings and practices help us to see the fleeting nature of all experience. With this clarity we can let go of our habit of effortful striving to solidify the flow of experience. This approach to life offers us a profound choice. Either we can continue to objectify whatever occurs so that we can name it and try to shape it to fit our sense of how we want our life to be. Or we can relax and open to being part of the flow, gently influencing how we emerge as part of the circumstances we encounter.

This latter approach frees us from the need to verify and analyse so that we can enjoy the freshness of each and every moment.

This short retreat will introduce us to the essence of the view of Dzogchen and facilitate how we can enter into direct experience of non-dual co-emergence. There will be periods of teaching and of meditation practice.

Equanimity - Finding balance in a turbulent world. Macclesfield 02.201907 Feb 202609:07:46

22-24 February 2019. Equanimity - Finding balance in a turbulent world. James Low conducted these teaching weekend for the Kun-Pan Ling Buddhist group in Macclesfield, UK.

Attempts to withdraw from turbulence or to control the mind are actions which increase our sense of separation. The mahayana view looks at how our mind is, rather than focusing on its impermanent contents. In the meditation we seek to open to that which is stable, an invitation, an explanation and a practice.

This involves finding the middle way of appearance and emptiness, free of control and avoidance on the one hand, and merging and identification on the other."

2/4 Seeing and imagining. [EN-PT-ES] Sintra 07-08.202530 Nov 202511:33:49

30 July - 9 August 2025. Seeing and imagining. Dzogchen retreat with James Low at Casa de Exercícios de Santo Inácio, Colares, in Sintra, Portugal.

Imagining is the play of the ground source. If the source is seen then all that is imagined is non-dual illusion, like a mirage or a dream. If the ground source is not seen and opened to then all that is imagined is reified and then we experience ourselves as existents in a world of existents.

18 November 2011. James Low gave this workshop for practising therapists in Hereford, UK.

“Our open heart touching and opening the heart of the other. This is non-dual contact, the meeting of sky with sky, the heart of Buddhist ethics.”

~ James Low

James starts with an introduction to the traditional Tibetan view of mindfulness, then relates this to different psychotherapy theories and finally, with how it can be taken and used in clinical practice.

42 Questions & Answers. [EN-IT] Zoom 06.202502 Nov 202500:42:58

June 4th 2025. James Low had invited questions from people watching his Zooms, which he began to answer.

1) Is consciousness and mind the same in Buddhism? Is my mind which is deluded and has its own habits and tendencies the same as the mind which is primordial, unborn and clear? If so why is the mind which I call mine deluded?

2) Are the explanations about karma and rebirth offered by traditional Buddhism part of a theory or belief or is it part of experience? Is it under the domain of consciousness or the domain of awareness? Does it make sense to practice Dzogchen without fully accepting these theories?

3) What does it mean if a rinpoche bangs you on the head or gives you a shock?

4) The luminous mind that we all have: is it also a compounded phenomena? If yes, how do we know when it is present and when not?

5) Can a mind involved in conceptual elaboration ever generate compassion or loving kindness? Right mindfulness is one aspect of the eight-fold path. What are instances of wrong mindfulness? How do I guard against wrong mindfulness?

6) In the White A practice, can we eventually include a Padmasambhava visualization with the three colors, the ball that radiates white light and drops into our heart, etc., or the practice of visualizing the tube that goes from the crown of our head to the perineum and then expands?

7) We have some experience within the Theravada and Zen traditions; now we start to explore Dzogchen. What would you recommend: pointing out instructions, initiation, long-term retreat?

8) Is there a practice that can be used to improve someone's situation? How would this work?

2/2 Tantra & Dzogchen. [EN-PL] Wilga 05.202528 Oct 202507:30:44

May 14th – 18th, 2025. Tantra & Dzogchen. Dzogchen retreat with James Low in Wilga, Poland.

The delusion that we exist as definable entities is the basis of all limited and limiting experience. Through dissolving our contrived identity into that of Padmasambhava, we become free to act in whatever ways will help sentient beings. The view of dzogchen deeps our understanding of how this functions and aids our release into our intrinsic source which we have never actually strayed from.

4/4 Non-duality is simple. Wiesen 07.202527 Sep 202506:50:34

July 5th – 13th 2025. Non-duality is simple. Dzogchen retreat with James Low at Retreathaus Berghof, Wiesen, Germany: https://simplybeing.co.uk/events/berghof-2025/

James thought using Chapter 8 "The Direct Indication of Buddhahood beyond Classification, by Nuden Dorje" of his book "Simply Being" (available on Amazon): https://simplybeing.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/Simply-Being-Text-Chapter-8-Revised-31-05-2023.pdf

The aim of this dzogchen retreat is to let go of our habitual involvement in the myriad forms of duality. In order to let go we need to sever the links between our erroneous sense of being a separate subject, our erroneous sense of there being separate real objects, and our erroneous grasping at occurrences as if they were the occurrence of something.

2/2 Audiobook "Buddha Shows the Way" in Portuguese23 Aug 202504:38:37

Audiobook 'Buddha Shows the Way - A collection of public talks and teachings', by James Low and transtaled and spoken to Portuguese by Madalena PedrozaThis book contains a selection of edited public talks given by James Low. They cover a wide range of topics yet share a common theme: how to apply Buddhist teachings in our complex engagement with the modern world. We are all faced with ever increasing tasks of life maintenance as we struggle to cope with the profound impact of climate change, conflict, economic chaos, environmental and political instabilities. Moreover our own inner life is prey to habitual tendencies, impulses and blind spots so that our sense of the world is often more muddled than we imagine it to be.The Buddhist view encourages us to see the ungraspable illusory nature of every situation in order that we might avoid being buffeted by samsara's waves of hopes and fears. With this clarity our own potential can be turned towards the benefit of the many rather than towards individual selfish pursuits. The Buddha shows the way contains eighteen short chapters which can be read in any order so it is a book that can be dipped into according to your mood and time available.E-Book and paperback: https://www.amazon.com.br/Buddha-show...1/2 Audiobook "Buddha Shows the Way" in Portuguese:    • 1/2 Audiobook "Buddha Shows the Way" in Po...  2/2 Audiobook "Buddha Shows the Way" in Portuguese:    • 2/2 Audiobook "Buddha Shows the Way" in Po...   (you are here)📱 Instagram of excerpts:   / sbsangha_jameslow  🎧 Poscasts of some teachinhgs: https://simplybeing.co.uk/news/podcasts/📆 Learn more about future events: https://simplybeing.co.uk/events

Open to Life: Emerson College, 16-21 June 2025, part 318 Aug 202500:49:27

Life comes as it comes. We do not know what events will arise and impact us. Struggling to stay in charge of what is occurring is exhausting while letting events determine our situation is unwise. The Buddhist Middle Way indicates that we can rest in open awareness while avoiding the extremes of over-involvement and under-involvement. We will focus on the Dzogchen teachings of relaxing and releasing our habitual patterns of reactivity so that our participation is both spontaneous and precise – contactful, yet neither invading nor abandoning.
