Having a Public Panic Attack23 Sep 202400:58:47

What's happening? Why, when I was feeling fine, 'doing ok,' and 'coping', do I suddenly feel like I've been hit by a sledgehammer and fallen down a well of darkness?

It's been almost five months since my mum passed.

This is a behind-the-scenes podcast. One of those we never expected to record. But record we did.

I've never had a public panic attack before. I didn't have a clue what was happening. But I do now, and we wanted to share this podcast episode with you in the hope that it might help you in some small, comforting way.

Thank you for being with us; you are loved, you are needed, and our hearts always beat with yours.

Tears in the Toilet. Returning to New Zealand16 Sep 202400:38:39

Liz and Brian are back in New Zealand. They flew from Chiang Mai via Bangkok and China and, thirty hours later, were home in Taranaki, New Zealand. Tucked up in bed.

But flying home to NZ didn't go smoothly. In fact, it was a sodding fiasco.

What started as a dream-come-true-flight ended with wet knickers and tears.

And not only that, the food on the plane was sh*t.

Sit back and listen to the story of the return flight

Enjoy!

Can I stay home forever? Braving normal life while GRIEVING14 Jun 202400:56:36

It's the first time in eight weeks I've left the house.

Apart from getting groceries, walking in nature, and spending an hour or two working at our local cafe, my safe place to grieve has been at home.

Alone.

In this episode, we wanted to share our first overnight trip away since losing Mum. We went to see our son, Sonny, in Hamilton, New Zealand. In the real world.

Filled with grief but determined to do something normal, this is what the experience looked like.

Thank you for listening and watching. We love you.

Living in New Zealand. 7 Things That (STILL) Baffle Us!14 Oct 202100:27:17

You'd think that after living in New Zealand for 12 years we'd have adjusted to the kiwi ways. And we have. To most things.

But not all.

We moved to New Zealand from England in 2009 and it was the best move that we have ever made. We have raised our kids in a country that embraces innovation and creativity, and have been warmly welcomed by the wonderful New Zealand people

But. There are times when we are reminded that this is not Kansas. That we still need to work a little harder to truly fit in. Whenever these seven events show up in life down under, we realise that try as we may, we are still adapting to life in New Zealand.

Here are the seven culprits that still baffle these two slow learning brits...

Behind The Scenes #6. Feeling Fear. Having Courage11 Oct 202100:36:48

It's on days like this that I tend to reminisce. Go back in my mind ten years to when Brian was working in his plumbing and heating business and I was at home with kids, doing my best to provide them with a rounded education.

Through my rose-tinted glasses, I see a calm and harmonious family who had a regular wage popping through the door every week. A life where the mother felt no need to put herself onto Youtube and make big fat mistakes in front of the world.

And then I take the glasses off and wipe them. And I remember that fear was always present.

There was the fear of some stuffing up my kid's life by homeschooling them. Fear of Brian drowning in the pool of stress that filled his fifty-hour workweek. Fear of using cling film when the whole world had adopted that rubbery Honeywrap organic stretchy stuff. Fear of doing things differently.

Fear. Loads of fear.

This week's podcast was made to inspire you. To encourage you to move forward with whatever it is you are doing. Even if (especially if) that thing is causing you to wobble and shake.

Last week a friend reminded me of the Mark Twain quote:

Courage is not the lack of fear. It is acting in spite of it.

Another quote that I shall be using often came from my husband, Brian Deacle

Have courage. Trust in yourself.

Enjoy.

Is New Zealand NEGLECTING These 7 (Essential) Life Skills?07 Oct 202100:36:12

New Zealand is often referred to as being, 'like England was fifty years ago.' At first, I wasn't sure what this statement meant but after living in New Zealand and witnessing the life skills and the values that New Zealand people work hard to retain, the expression became a whole lot clearer.

Life Skills. Are They Being Lost in New Zealand?

A survey compiled by Melbourne's Monash University found that New Zealand families would like their children to be taught basic life skills in school.

But what are the feels down on the ground? (Sorry, trying to sound cool but it failed. I promise not to do it again).

In this weeks show we thought we would give you our opinion on whether we think the New Zealand people are retaining (and passing on) valuable life skills to the younger generation or if they are watching helplessly as the good stuff gets washed down the drain.

In this week's podcast episode on New Zealand Life Skills Brian and I talk about:
  1. Manners and etiquette.
  2. Fixing and maintaining cars.
  3. Communication skills. Particularly in the younger generation. The way that New Zealand kids are raised is different from say, the UK.
  4. Household chores and why they matter in New Zealand.
  5. Toilet matters (admit it, your mind is boggling).
  6. Technology, how advanced ARE the New Zealand people?
  7. Re-cycling, clothing and fixing.

Behind The Scenes #5. Quitting School. Where to Now?29 Sep 202100:53:15

Oh, joy. Just when you think you have everything sorted.

Just when you think that you have all of your baby duckies lined up neatly in a row, something goes and changes. A big wet scary towel is thrown over you and your head is you find yourself being yanked pulled along with the flow.

I just wanted to make this absolutely clear before you listen to this weeks Behind the Scenes Podcast.

What may sound like a very calm and easy-going mother talking to her up-in-the-air-daughter is actually a woman whose mind is filled with jumble, fear, excitement, pride, and worry.

All parents know this feeling. Each and every one of us go through this at least a billion times a year with our kids.

Enjoy.

I know that you are going to love this episode. Let me know by leaving a comment on my blog or sending me a quick email at liz@itsadrama.com I read and reply to every single email.

In this podcast, Tessa and I talk openly about:

  • Tessa's decision NOT to graduate. To change paths. To no longer 'do' education.
  • The fear around making decisions that don't fit neatly into a square box.
  • Dealing with peer pressure.
  • My, the parent's, perspective. My fears.
  • The one most important skill that all parents need to keep moving forward.

Living in New Zealand With Food Allergies23 Sep 202100:42:54

Yesterday I was asked by a member of our private community, 'Is the food in New Zealand better?'

While this is a huge topic (and those who know me will have probably guessed my answer), I said it would depend on where you are comparing it to. Compared to the UK, yes, I think that the food in New Zealand is better. It tastes more 'real'.

Don't ask me to define real because I can't. Sorry. Let's just say it hits a different spot on the taste buds.

After talking to this community member for a while I discovered her reason for asking the above question. She had severe food allergies and was trying to gauge what life in New Zealand would look like.

In this week's show, I talk to Jenn Morris. Jenn is from the Youtube channel, A Thousand Words. She emigrated to New Zealand over a decade ago and she has various food intolerances and allergies that she lives with.

So...Is The Food in New Zealand Better?

If you are thinking of moving to New Zealand and you have an allergy or food intolerance, your big question will be how you will cope.

Is the food in New Zealand better?

In this week's episode Jen shares:

How she didn't have any of these food intolerances until she moved to New Zealand and what that looked like.

How she copes living in a (very) small town in regards to her special dietary needs.

Grocery shopping in New Zealand.

Eating out with her special dietary needs.

Whether she thinks that food in New Zealand is better.

Behind The Scenes #4. Why we REALLY Left The UK21 Sep 202101:09:05

Last week, when I received an email from a listener from the Middle East. (The fact that we have people listening to us from the middle east blows my mind with excitement but that is a different story). Here is a snippet of what it said:

"One second thing is the reason why you guys decided to move abroad. I am from the middle east so everybody want to move away from here. It is really interesting for me to listen to a westerner moving abroad".

After reading this email it suddenly struck me. How one person's ideal country is another person prison. Maybe prison is a tad harsh but it is late at night when I'm writing this and I can't think of the correct word so let's stick with

Why WOULD anyone want to emigrate from the UK? And while we're at it, why would anyone want to leave New Zealand and live in Australia or England? Why on earth would anyone consider leaving beautiful, gorgeous France to live in America?

But they do. Every single day.

I know that you are going to love this episode. Let me know by leaving a comment on my blog or sending me a quick email at liz@itsadrama.com I read and reply to every single email.

Hello and welcome back to episode 4 of It's a Drama Behind The Scenes Podcast.

In this podcast, Brian and I talk openly about:

When we agreed that staying in the UK was not an option

The fear of making mistakes and how we tried to 'make do' with what we had.

Money. Loss of money, making money, spending money. We've done it all.

Why are some people are happy to stay put in the same house for the rest of their lives?

What is it? What is that burning desire to up and move your family to the other side of the world?

Behind The Scenes #3. We Met Online. From Subscribers To Friends.13 Sep 202101:19:40

This episode is a biggy.

There is no way we could condense what we have just experienced into a thirty-minute show.

Today you will hear us talk about how we met a Māori couple online - on Youtube. And how, within ten days of that initial introduction, these people had traveled ten hours across the country and were sitting at our table sharing dinner with us.  Four strangers. Two cultures. One beautiful connection.

I know that you are going to love this episode.

Hello and welcome back!

This is episode three of our six-part behind-the-scenes podcast series where we go deeper into our family life and share some things that we think will interest you and help in some aspect of your own life.

In this podcast, Brian and I talk openly about:

  • How some Māori people are perceived to be in New Zealand.
  • What some Māori people believe to be true about Pākehā (Pākehā is a Māori-language term for New Zealanders primarily of European descent).
  • How it felt to be contacted by Mahuta who described himself as a  'Māori fan'
  • The fear of looking ignorant and stupid and facing those fears head-on.
  • Human kindness, openness, connection and trust. Why without these things it will always remain stuck.

Coming To New Zealand With Dogs

If you are considering moving to New Zealand you will be well aware that the move won't be cheap. By the time you have paid for visa's and shipping and flights, the costs begin to make your eyes water.

And what if you have dogs? (Or cats?) What do you do then? Will you leave them with family back home or will you do everything in your power to take your furry family members with you?

Mark and Gracie are from the UK. Their dream of moving to New Zealand with their children became a reality when Gracie found a job as a GP. After eight months of planning their adventure, they landed in Auckland three weeks ago.

Mark and Gracie have been through the process of bringing their two dogs with them to New Zealand and in this show they share:

  • The costs to bring two dogs from the UK to New Zealand
  • The expected time frame between leaving their pets in the UK to when they will once again be reunited in NZ
  • The flight conditions for their pets
  • Problems that they didn't expect to encounter

If you are moving to New Zealand from the USA with pets, we recommend Starwood Pet Travel.

We have had many, many super recommendations for this company, and we couldn't be happier with them. If you are in the US, they can ship your furry friend to NZ, and they do so with love and care.

Behind The Scenes Episode 2: Our 20 Year Old Son06 Sep 202100:40:02

Hello and welcome back! This is the second (of an experimental)  six-part series. A behind-the-scenes podcast where we go deeper into our family life and share some things that we think (we hope!) you might be interested in and may help you.

So many of you have asked us to talk more about personal matters: being a parent, traveling the world, homeschooling, starting online businesses and so here we are.

In this episode, we catch up with Sonny. If you are a long-time listener of this podcast you will know that Sonny is our son. It was Sonny's idea, way back in 2018 (when he was a wee 17 year old) to start this podcast that you are listening to right now.

In This Podcast Sonny talks about:

  • Life: Being 20. how it looks and if it is how he imagined it to be.
  • Homeschooling: How he went from being a homeschooler with no college education to having three jobs.
  • Money: How he is making his money and what his dreams are for the future.

Because all of my kiwi friends are too shy to come onto the podcast and be grilled, I did the next best thing. I obtained the answers to my question: Why are New Zealand people friendly and kind? And then I brought the findings back to you.

Taking a Walk in New Zealand

The day that we recorded this podcast, New Zealand was still in Level 4 lockdown. As we are permitted to exercise in our local area, Brian and I thought it would be nice to share this walk with you. Give you a bit of exercise.

If you are listening to this podcast through your headphones, that's why you can hear lots of crunchy gravel sounds.

We also shot some lovely New Zealand scenery and overlaid it onto the video so if you are keen to see the walk that we are taking you on, watch the video version below!

Give us Some Feedback on This Podcast.

We would love it if, after watching or listening to this podcast you took the time to let us know your thought? If you liked it, great! Tell us and we will do more of this style! (And please don't forget to share with any friends who would love this show!) If you didn't like it then let us know and we'll cry.

Grief. It looks like this (but feels like that)07 Jun 202401:05:15

Lately, when I drop into bed at night, I find myself asking how on earth I got through the last twelve hours. Quite often, I don't remember what I did or half of what I said.

Yet, if you passed me in the street, you'd think I was a normal, everyday person going about her day, coping. Doing grown-up stuff. Making videos. Living without a mum.

This episode was inspired by you.

It is made in recognition of all those who have reached out to me, people who have shown their love and support and shared their grief journey stories. People who, from the outside, look happy and sorted and appear to have it all together.

But, like me, they don't. Not always. And that's okay.

As a good friend said to me, "Grief is a journey, not a destination".

My friend, Brian and I are here today, so neither of us has to make that journey alone.

Always remember, our hearts beat with yours.

Hello and welcome! This is the first (of an experimental)  six-part series. A behind the scenes podcast where we go deeper into our family life and share some things that we think (we hope!) you might be interested in and may help you.

So many of you have asked us to talk more about personal matters: being a parent, travelling the world, homeschooling, starting online businesses and so here we are.

We kick off the series with our gorgeous teenage (and usually very private) daughter talking about being seventeen.

Tessa talks about:

Life: Typical problems that she (and other teenage girls) are facing and how she tackles those hurdles.

Homeschooling: Friends, staying motivated. How life looks as a 17 year old homeschooler. What she sees her future to look like.

Fitting into New Zealand. (As told by a real kiwi bloke).19 Aug 202100:35:29

If you are moving to New Zealand there are things you'll want to know. Like how to fit in and get along. And who better to answer that question than a true, born and bred New Zealander.

Today we are thrilled to be chatting with Gordy. A real kiwi bloke.

Fitting in in New Zealand

If you are considering moving to New Zealand you will be as desperate as we were to learn as much as you can about the country.

You will have many, many questions. Some of them, people like us can answer for you. We have been living in New Zealand for twelve years, and we can share our honest trials and tribulations on what living in New Zealand looks like.

In this week's show, we talk to a fifth-generation New Zealander. A real kiwi bloke.

Gordy shares what being a kiwi in New Zealand looks like. He gives us a few valuable pointers as to what he thinks new immigrants need to follow in order to make it in New Zealand - to feel right at home.

Gordy also explains the meaning behind the acronyms (used by many kiwis), G.O.Y.A. And F.O.R.D

This show is a lot of fun and if you are considering moving to New Zealand or if you are already living in New Zealand and are finding it hard to settle, you will love what this show offers.

New Zealand Kiwi

Just to be clear. We are not talking about New Zealand's national bird, the kiwi.

We are also not referring to the green fury thing called the kiwi fruit.

When we say New Zealand kiwi we mean the common self-reference used by New Zealanders. The term kiwi  (which is not considered offensive) is viewed as a symbol of pride and endearment for the people of New Zealand.

It can be confusing, I know. The best advice I can give you is to brush up on some New Zealand slang before you arrive in New Zealand - that way, you won't feel like a numnut!

Why is New Zealand SO Expensive? (Or is it?...)12 Aug 202100:32:13

Why is New Zealand so expensive? Is everything in New Zealand expensive? Why do things cost so much in New Zealand?

These are questions that we hear a lot from people overseas.

So in this week's show, we thought we'd share seven things that we found to be far cheaper in New Zealand than in the UK.

Now then. I bet you weren't expecting that were you...?

Why is New Zealand So Expensive

If you are moving to New Zealand from the US (or the UK like us), money will be at the forefront of your mind. The biggest question we get from our audience (apart from what tea do you drink) is how does the cost of living in New Zealand compare to that of the UK or the USA?

Moving To New Zealand. The Cost.

If you are thinking of moving to New Zealand, you will be familiar with the price tag that comes as part of the package.

While New Zealand is by no means reserved for the wealthy (we wouldn't be here if that were the case), the cost to live in New Zealand is something that is by no means cheap.

House prices in New Zealand are rising at a rate of knots, and if you are considering living in Auckland, then you will need a very well paid job.

Or a sugar daddy.

But. You know me. I like to remain optimistic. And some things in New Zealand cost far less and will leave your pockets feeling pleasantly fuller than when you were back home.

Swapping America For New Zealand30 Jul 202100:47:18

If you are considering moving to New Zealand from the US then you will love this week's show. Two weeks ago, our guests found themselves leaving America for good to start a new life down under.

And it wasn't easy for them. Moving away from family, selling your home and giving away possessions all comes with a big emotional price tag.

Leaving America For Good

In this week's show, we talk to Maile and Brian, a couple from Vermont in the USA.

Their story is like something out of a movie.

Brian and Maile met at high school. They were friends for some years but drifted apart when their careers took different paths. Maile trained to be a nurse and Brian worked in IT account management.

The couple had no contact for twenty years. And then out of the blue, Maile received a Facebook request from Bryan.

Which she accepted. Phew.

Maile was working as a travel nurse but Bryan was experiencing some major life challenges (he called it a midlife crisis). This midlife crisis drove him to New Zealand. For three months.

Unbeknown to Bryan, Maile also held a flame for New Zealand. When Bryan returned to America the two spent more and more time together and decided that they would love to return to New Zealand. Together.

  Moving To New Zealand

Bryan and Maile began to plan.

They researched everything they could about moving to New Zealand. They compared the cost of living in New Zealand vs the US, thought about where they would live (which island was the best, the North or the South Island?). They even brushed up on some New Zealand slang.

But watching YouTube videos and asking questions on Facebook wasn't enough for Maile and Bryan. They needed support. Some inside information. They wanted friends who were going through the same challenges and emotional upheaval as they were.

And they found it. When they signed up for the FREE 5-day life in New Zealand video guide and then went on to invest in the New Zealand Calling Ultimate Package.

  Living in New Zealand

Which brings us to now!

Bryan and Maile have been living in New Zealand for a grand total of ten days. And, through the private community, we have become close friends. And that is how I was very lucky enough to interview Maile and Bryan and share that content with you!

Is This Grief or Depression (and why does no one warn you?)30 May 202400:47:10

We weren't going to release this podcast episode.

The original plan was to discuss whether, after losing her mum to cancer six weeks ago, the deep sadness Liz is feeling is normal grief (as one would expect) or a worryingly worsening depression.

And while that's what we did end up discussing, the route we took to arrive at the conclusion was different to what we anticipated.

We were ready to scrap the episode and start again.

But. We changed our mind.

On reflection (and a large red wine later), we agreed that these authentic, unscripted, messy conversations are often the most valuable.

We certainly hope so.

You are incredibly important and cherished by us both. If you are suffering in any way, please talk to a professional who can help. You are loved and you are not alone.

Until next time. Kia kaha.

See You NEVER...The Guilt of Moving Away From Family.28 Jun 202100:30:01

There's no easy way to say it.

Leaving loved ones behind, be it, parents, grandparents, brothers or sisters, while you and yours move far, far away to start a new life is tough.

But that's not to say it's impossible and that you shouldn't do it.

Listen to our podcast on Moving Away From Family Behind. How To Cope. Leaving Family Behind To Move Overseas A Grandma Who Left Her Family Behind

As some of you might know, my family and I moved from the UK to New Zealand well over a decade ago.

I have talked endlessly about how we coped with raising kids in New Zealand without all of our family around us.

In this week's show, we talk to Linda. Linda is my children's Grandmother (my mother).

Linda

Linda moved from the UK eleven years ago and has been enjoying life in New Zealand ever since.

But she left behind a son (my brother), four grandchildren, a sister, a brother and her aunt.

Linda tells us about the strategies she and her family have in place to help them all cope with being apart.

Why Move To New Zealand?

New Zealand is a wonderful place to raise kids, New Zealand food is delicious and diverse, and building a house in New Zealand is not something that is reserved for the super-rich.

New Zealand people are welcoming and easygoing, the weather is favourable, and recently Auckland, New Zealand was voted the #1 place in the world to live

But there are a few scary things about New Zealand too. One of those being that it's miles away from the great of the world.

Hello and welcome! This is the first of the in-betweeny true stories podcast where Brain and I will bring (or try and bring), a true story to entertain you each week!

So many of you have said that you love it when we go off on a tangent and start on a story, so this is where the idea came from!

This weeks story takes place in East London, in 1996.

Brian, who was working as a maintenance plumber, was called out to a block of flats (English word for an apartment) to fix, what he thought was, a leaky tap...

Scary Things in New Zealand That DETER Visitors24 Jun 202100:29:46

Scary things in New Zealand. Do they exist?

You are probably reading this post because you are or at some point in your life have considered moving to New Zealand.

And who could blame you? Clean, green, and with hobbits roaming the countryside in search of gold rings. New Zealand is indeed, a very attractive place to raise a family.

But what about the downsides?

What about the scary things in New Zealand? Matters that keep you awake at night worrying yourself senseless?

Why People Choose To Move To New Zealand

New Zealand has a lot of things going for it.

It's a wonderful place to raise kids, the New Zealand food is tasty and diverse, and building a house in New Zealand is not something that is reserved exclusively for the super-rich.

New Zealand people are welcoming and easygoing, the weather is favourable and recently Auckland, New Zealand was voted the #1 place in the world to live.

Add to this, New Zealand's admirable management of the world pandemic and it's no wonder that people are flocking to the borders and trying to add Jacinda as a friend on Twitter.

Scary Things in New Zealand (That Put People Off Coming)

But no country is perfect. Including New Zealand.

My family and I emigrated from the UK twelve years ago, and before the move, we battled with our own common fears about moving to New Zealand.

Once we arrived, we realised that we were not alone. Others, just like us, had those exact same worries.

Let's Talk About New Zealand...

So in this week's podcast episode, we thought it would be fun to discuss 6 common fears that people share about living in New Zealand.

(The things that, no matter how green the grass is on the other side, prevent them from calling Aotearoa home).

We recorded this podcast as we were sitting underneath a dormant volcano. Mt Taranaki. You can watch the video below.

Fun fact! Taranaki, a region on the West coast of New Zealand was voted the second-best region in the world to live in 2017!

Auckland?? WHO'D Wanna Live THERE?17 Jun 202100:44:09

According to The Economist Intelligence Unit's 2021 Global Liveability Index, living in Auckland, New Zealand is now the number one chosen place to live in the world.

And why not? The sun, the sails, the diversity.

But wait.

Before we all hunt for our passports and leave granny, Kansas and the wind behind, let's look at a few cold facts...

Living in Auckland New Zealand. How? Why?

If you are thinking of moving to New Zealand you have probably considered living in Auckland.

Auckland has job offers, world-ranked Universities; Fabulous beaches.

But are you viewing New Zealand's largest city through rose-tinted glasses?

What about the five-hour traffic jams in Auckland? And the much-discussed horrendous house prices?

In a recent podcast that Brian and I made we discussed, where is best to live, North Island or South Island? We discovered that medium house prices in Auckland sails in at a whopping $1.2 million NZD, compared to a cool $566,000 in Christchurch.

So what gives?

Talking to Ryan About Living in Auckland, New Zealand

This week, we were lucky enough to talk to Ryan.

Ryan moved to New Zealand from the USA  with his school teacher wife and his two children in 2017.

He and his family have been living in Auckland for the past four years. They love it. They wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Here's why.

Ryan. Why Would You Live In Auckland New Zealand?

Ryan and I talked intensively about why he loves living in Auckland. I asked him the following questions:

Why did you choose to move to New Zealand?

How did you get a visa to come to New Zealand?

What about the cost to live in New Zealand? Was living in Auckland a huge bash on the wallet?

Give me five reasons why you love living in Auckland New Zealand?

The interview is fabulous. We have been living in New Zealand for the past twelve years, and I STILL learned an enormous amount from Ryan!

Ryan also promised to come back and do a part two podcast where he shares the things that shocked him about mortgages, jobs, houses and life in New Zealand. Look out for that one!

Opportunity in New Zealand. Does it Even Exist?10 Jun 202100:35:36

Opportunity in New Zealand. Is there any?

I can't tell you the number of times I've been asked this question. I have to say it is usually from people who are moving to New Zealand from the USA, people who say, 'we'd love to move to New Zealand but we've heard that there aren't many opportunities there.'

Hmmm.

Time for us to make a podcast episode and share all of the opportunities that we (my family of four) have had since moving to New Zealand twelve years ago.

Does Opportunity Exist in New Zealand?

You can listen to the podcast or watch the video to hear the 5 HUGE opportunities that New Zealand has given us as a family, but before you do that, let me give you a few tips regarding opportunities in New Zealand. That way, if you are planning on living in New Zealand you will be prepared!

There are some ludicrous misconceptions about New Zealand, one of those being that the country has limited opportunities. Not true.

There is plenty of opportunity in New Zealand and if you are good at what you do, and are willing to go that extra mile, you will find it.

Both the North Island and South Island have plenty of opportunities, just remember that becoming part of a local community is crucial to your success.

Think about what you can offer New Zealand. How you can help. New Zealand people are more impressed by who you are as a person rather than what size degree you have and what car you drive.

Really?? 7 Weird Things About New Zealand03 Jun 202100:30:04

If you are thinking of moving to New Zealand you'll want to learn everything you can about the country before you arrive. You'll definitely want to be told about any unusual things that might be waiting for you.

Because no one likes weird surprises.

Unusual Things in New Zealand

There are a few tips that we can give you to make moving to New Zealand easier.

1: Before arriving brush up on some New Zealand slang.

2: Ignore silly advice from those who have never been to the country. There are some ludicrous misconceptions about New Zealand and the last thing you need to hear are bogus facts.

3: Decide where you would rather live before you arrive. There are many differences between the North Island and the South Island so do your homework, (in saying that, it's not the end of the world if you change your mind once you arrive - shifting around the country is quite normal for New Zealand people!).

4: Listen to the podcast or watch our video on the unusual things about New Zealand and that way you will be well prepped!

Where's Best to Live? New Zealand Or Canada?27 May 202100:30:55

New Zealand or Canada? Which is the best country to live in?

New Zealand and Canada are amongst the top destinations that people choose to emigrate to.

In this podcast and video, we talk about why we (a wife, husband and two small kids) chose to move to New Zealand over Canada and whether we regretted any of the decisions that we made.

New Zealand Or Canada? How We Chose The One For Us

Where shall we live kids? Canada or New Zealand?

The year was 2008 and we were living in the UK. My husband and I were desperate to leave the UK for various reasons and we had our immigration application logged with the Canadian Embassy.

And then I (Liz) took a trip over to New Zealand to visit my sister and everything changed.

The papers for Canada were cancelled and within a year we found ourselves living in New Zealand

Although we made a few major mistakes within our first year, we were soon mastering the New Zealand slang words and fitting right in.

Where to Live in NZ. North or South Island?20 May 202100:38:47

If you are moving to New Zealand then the first thing you will consider is which island to live on. North or South?

We get asked this a lot from families who are moving to New Zealand and have no clue as to which island offers most.

So we thought we'd help out. Give you our honest thoughts (and experiences) on what we have experienced on both sides of the water.

Which is Best? North Island or South Island

According to the Worldometer, the population of New Zealand in 2021 stands at 4,857,244

77% of the population live on the North Island of New Zealand and 23% live on the South Island.

In this podcast (and video) we discuss 7 things that both islands offer in the hope that we can help you decide where you would like to live if you are moving to New Zealand.

Mild or Wild? What Are New Zealand Kids (Really) Like13 May 202100:33:29

What are New Zealand kids like?

This is a question that we get asked a lot from families who are moving to New Zealand with kids.

So we thought we'd spill the beans.

The Watties ones, not the Heinz. And give you an insight into kiwi parents & how the kids in New Zealand are raised differently than in the UK.

What Are New Zealand Kids (Really) Like?

What are New Zealand kids like? And how do they differ from the rest of the world?

Listen to the podcast or watch the video and discover for yourself how New Zealand kids are raised differently. Personally, I think the way the kids are brought up in  New Zealand is better.

New Zealand Culture

Because English is spoken (although to be honest, some of the New Zealand slang words are hard to fathom!) New arrivals to New Zealand assume that life will be the same.

To be honest, that is why 30% of New Zealand immigrants go home within the first two years.

Why?

Because they assumed that life in New Zealand would be the same as they were used to back home.

The culture of New Zealand is very different from what you may be used to if you are from the UK and certainly if you are emigrating to New Zealand from the US you will notice a huge difference.

New Zealand Parents (and how they raise their kids)

Kiwi parents raise their kids differently. Without giving too much away I will say one word.

Independence.

Goodbye. For now21 May 202400:18:18

No description. No words. Just a story.

And a thank you. A huge, huge thank you.

Thank you for allowing me to share the intimate details of such a sad and heartbreaking time. And for confirming that no matter who we are, where we live, what we look like, or how we spend our days:

Our hearts beat as one.

And now, a tribute to the woman who made it all seem so very easy.

I love you.

Building a House in New Zealand. Dream or Nightmare?08 May 202100:36:17

Building your own home is what most people dream of.

We were no different.

When we moved to New Zealand twelve years ago, building a house in New Zealand was right up there on our list of hopes. Along with eventually mastering the New Zealand slang words.

And after two years of living in New Zealand, we took the leap and set about building a new house on a piece of land in Taranaki, New Zealand.

In this podcast, we show you how things played out.

Emigrating To New Zealand From America in 202130 Apr 202100:58:33

Are you thinking of emigrating to New Zealand from America?

Then you're going to love what we have to share.

In this New Zealand podcast episode, I talk to Katie and David, an American couple who recently made moving to New Zealand a reality.

Katie is a nurse from California and David worked for the LAPD. They had dreamed of living in New Zealand for a while and now that dream is their reality.

But it wasn't all plain sailing...

Emigrating to New Zealand From America

I met Katie and David when, after months of searching for every bit of information they could on emigrating to New Zealand from America, they found our podcast and New Zealand YouTube channel.

They then signed up for our FREE life in New Zealand video guide and then joined our moving to New Zealand community.

We have been friends ever since.

In this podcast episode, we discuss how a family of four (with two small kids) made the move to New Zealand from the USA a reality.

I ask questions such as:

Which visa did you get?

How long did it take from day 1 of deciding to arrive in New Zealand?

What did the kids think of leaving the US to start a new life in New Zealand?

How did you get jobs?

What was MIQ (Managed Isolation and Quarantine)

How was the flight?

What was the strangest thing about New Zealand culture that you weren't expecting?

And on and on.

This episode is a crucial find if you are thinking of moving to New Zealand from the US (or anywhere else in the world).

Is New Zealand (a Bit) Backward?21 Apr 202100:34:45

Is New Zealand behind the times?

In this podcast, Brian and I talk about a topic that so many people (people who have usually never even been here) like to say.

That is that New Zealand is behind the times. A bit backwards. Slow to catch on.

"Ohhh... it's like the UK in the 1950's". There are air raid shelters and everything...

There are many misconceptions about New Zealand and one of them is that the New Zealand people live in grass huts and don't have internet.

How rude. Everyone knows that isn't true. Our houses are made of very nice modern-day mud.

Is New Zealand Behind The Times?

In this episode, we discuss ten points that prove New Zealand is NOT behind the times including:

Smoking

Internet

Cafés

School safety

Doctors

Banking

**** (rather not say...it's a surprise!)

Women's vote

Gay marriage

Moving To New Zealand. 5 Rookie Mistakes To Avoid Making02 Apr 202100:48:31

We moved to New Zealand with kids (age 8 and 5) from the UK twelve years ago.

To say that we were wet behind the ears is an understatement. Rather we were sodding drenched.

We emigrated to New Zealand from the UK and within the first year of being in the country, we had made more mistakes than we had in our entire lives combined.

5 Mistakes (We Made) When We Moved To New Zealand

When we first moved to New Zealand we pretty much made things up as we went along. As you do.

Perhaps we underestimated how big a move New Zealand was.

As well as getting our heads around day to day differences such as New Zealand slang words, getting to know about the New Zealand culture (even the New Zealand food took some getting used to!), we were also making bigger decisions.

Like what car to buy, where to live and what working in New Zealand would look like.

In this week's podcast episode, (we also have a video version if you would prefer to watch!) Liz and her husband Brian, discuss 5 rookie mistakes that they made within the first year of living in New Zealand

1: Gambling with our currency.

2: Trying to rent a house in New Zealand from the UK

3: Buying a car from an auction.

4: Trying to be too sociable.

5: Jumping at the first opportunity (out of fear).

Life in NZ. Why (Some) Immigrants Fail To Settle30 Mar 202100:29:27

We have been living in New Zealand for twelve years.

We arrived from the UK where we had a comfortable home, my husband was on a good wage and both of my kids were at school.

Within a year of moving to New Zealand, we were living in a rented house and my husband was on half the wage.

Did I want to go home? At times, yes. But we were so determined to make New Zealand work that we did everything in our power to make it happen.

Living in New Zealand. Why 30% of Immigrants Go Home

But not everyone is as lucky as us.

In 2019 Stuff.co reported:

Out of the 99,300 non-New Zealanders that arrived here last year, 28,000 left and 71,000 stayed".

New Zealand population statistics manager Peter Dolan said the cooling in net migration last year was a result of the increase in those leaving the country after migrating here in the past.

For some people, the New Zealand cultural differences are so far from what they are used to that they pack up and leave.

Homesickness is very real.

When you move to the other side of the world, leaving behind everyone and everything you have only ever known, it is only natural to feel feelings of loss and regret. (Unless where you have left is utterly terrible of course).

Why Can't Some People Make a Life in New Zealand? 🇳🇿

Lack of research plays a big part. And being unrealistic.

There are many misconceptions about New Zealand, one of those being that this is the land of milk and honey.

Which of course it isn't.

When people arrive here and discover that work still exists, as does lining up at the grocery store and talking to the teacher about 'that child' who is bullying yours, they get disheartened.

They become bitter. Worry that they have made a massive mistake.

Instead of embracing their new way of life, learning the New Zealand slang and looking, they attempt to replicate their old ways in their new country.

And to some extent, this can work. We know people who only have British friends. They go to their house every weekend and watch British TV. Eat British food and talk about 'back home.

Personally, I don't think this is sustainable. There is only so much you can say about the price of Heinz Baked Beans.

Americans in New Zealand also find it tough. Although personally, every American that we have met have found the country to be so refreshing that they embrace the change with open arms.

5 Reasons Why (Some) Immigrants to New Zealand Can't settle

In this week's podcast episode, Liz and her husband Brian, discuss 5 of the most common traits that cause (some) immigrants to leave New Zealand.

I say some because I don't want you to become disheartened.

Some of these points that we make are totally natural and even if you find yourself doing them that doesn't necessarily mean that you won't make it work in New Zealand. You will. But only if you want to.

Have your breaking in period and then embrace the country for what it is. Holding on to your old life will only prevent you from moving forward and that's not why you moved to New Zealand.

Either way, good luck with your move to New Zealand and don't forget to share this post with anyone who would love it too!

Marriage, Menopause and One (Big) Mistake.26 Mar 202100:23:24

If you are looking for tips on working from home with your spouse then you might definitely certainly want to listen to this podcast.

For sure.

Dealing with being together 24/7  is a regular conversation at our dinner table. We have been working together (on and off) as husband and wife - both from home and out of the house - for the past twenty-five years.

And we haven't yet killed each other.

Notice how I said yet.

Working From Home With Your Spouse. Marriage. Menopause & Everything In Between

That almost changed today.

After sitting down and having a forty-minute conversation about working, living and remaining in love with your spouse, I discovered that Brian (yes, it was his fault, not mine, not that I am one to blame of course) forgot to turn his phone (the same phone that records the podcast) onto flight mode.

To cut a long story short, the phone rang five minutes into the podcast and unbeknown to us, stopped recording.

Thirty minutes of nothingness.

Luckily, the phone camera (that is used to record the interview for YouTube) was still recording so, rather than scrap the whole conversation, we decided (after watching the video recording through) that we would release this conversation to the world using only the phone audio.

In this podcast episode (which also has a video to watch should you so wish!), we explored 3 (very similar) things that New Zealand and America share a love for!

My family and I have been living in New Zealand twelve years ago from the UK and it was the BEST thing we ever did.

Of course, as with any country, there are pros and cons of living in New Zealand here, but in general, the New Zealand food is divine and the scenery is to die for and the kiwi people are super welcoming.

If you are from the US and are asking Is New Zealand for me then hopefully this video podcast will help you feel right at home!

Unexpected Respite16 Apr 202400:32:34

Wrong. Wrong. And wrong again.

You'd think that I'd have learned by now. I've had fifty-three years to practice, after all.

But no.

Still, I make the mistake of thinking that to make things 'better' and 'easier', I must look outside of myself.

Go far afield. Spend a ton of money and wrap my mum and me up in cashmere rugs, then sit alongside Rose and Kathy Bates in first class on the Titanic.

Way off, Liz. Not even close.

This week's podcast update is brought to you with love, tenderness and gratitude. And a few tears.

We wanted to share three things that happened to us in the past few weeks. Small serenities that brought unexpected comfort and respite while we attempt to navigate the imminent loss of my lovely mum.

Thank you for allowing us this safe space to share the intimate details of this challenging time in our lives. You are wonderful.

Yours,

Liz and Brian xx

The Truth About What New Zealand People Are (Really) Like12 Feb 202100:37:55

My family and I have been living in New Zealand for almost twelve years.

And in that time we have got to know many New Zealanders. (Or if we are going to use New Zealand slang, Kiwis).

So in this week's New Zealand podcast, we thought it would be interesting to take the things that New Zealand people are known for and tell you our opinion on whether we think those labels are right.

New Zealand School System Vs The US. Who Wins?26 Jan 202100:49:42

The education system in New Zealand receives an unfair amount of flack.

When we were planning on moving to New Zealand twelve years ago, the school system was one of the things that people always brought up.

"Ohhh... you know schools aren't that good over there don't you?"  said the people who had never crossed the Atlantic in their lives. "And apparently, you can't get decent bacon".

You know my thoughts on this. Tosh. That's what.

I've had plenty of decent bacon butties in New Zealand.

New Zealand Education System

I'm not an expert in the New Zealand school system field.

I homeschooled both of my kids from the ages of 10 and 7.  Not because I was unhappy with the New Zealand schools but because thankfully, New Zealand is an openminded forward-thinking country that encourages freedom of choice when it comes to education.

And mine was to homeschool.

New Zealand Education System Compared to The US

So I found me an expert instead. Someone who would chat to me on the podcast and tell me everything there is to know about schools on both sides of the world.

The lovely Tara, from KiwiAmerican (check out her YouTube Channel below) is an American who now moved to New Zealand from the US four years ago.

She has four kids who have all experienced the US education system and are now at school in New Zealand.

Tara also works as a university lecturer in Wellington so this gal knows her stuff when it comes to the school system in New Zealand and how it compares.

If you are thinking of making that big move and planning on living in New Zealand with kids  (but are concerned that they might end up with turnips as brains) then this is the episode for you.

We hope you enjoyed the show and as always, thanks so much for being there, we love and appreciate your feedback.
