396 Erin Martin - Making America Healthy Again with food as medicine, not Ozempic16 Dec 202501:08:59

Make America healthy again: is that helping the food-as-medicine movement or hurting it? And why is it so important to focus on quality food as medicine- which means nutrient density and real quality- rather than settling for simply “more fruit and vegetables”? Why would you, if you can, deny people with severe diabetes and lower incomes the best-quality food possible, especially when it has the biggest ripple effect?

Today, a check-in conversation with Erin Martin, one of the leaders advancing the food as medicine movement in the US. It has been an exciting, interesting, and challenging few years — from speaking on the Hill in Washington, to passing a food as medicine act in her home state of Oklahoma (which has some of the worst health crises in the country), to scaling their program of prescribing produce to reverse type 2 diabetes to over 500 patients. But also: politics, making America and children healthy again, a global and local health crisis spiralling out of control, GLP-1 drugs breaking through, and somehow food and regenerative agriculture becoming polarising, a political minefield.

So much to talk about: the first social impact bond, which isn’t a bond but an outcome-based payment scheme,  is coming in early 2026 in Oklahoma. And super important: real data is showing massive savings when it comes to prescribing healthy vegetables, fruit, and cooking classes.

395 Alfonso Chico de Guzmán - The ag-tech that brings cows back09 Dec 202501:37:03

Straight from La Junquera farm, in Murcia, Spain, a Walking the Land episode with Alfonso Chico de Guzmán, a regenerative livestock farmer.

It starts as a hobby. So, you take a few cows just like someone in the city would take a cat or dog or a chihuahua, and it slowly gets out of hand. But what really enables this kind of grazing in these circumstances is technology, virtual fencing, virtual shepherding to be precise. This is ag-tech done right. It enables farmers to hold more complexity on the land. In this landscape it would be impossible to have these animals outside year-round because you would have to fence it. You have to drill, and basically it takes a week to put in a fence that the cows maybe use for two days. So that’s not a very good multiple.

So, this is a story about the reintroduction of animals as a tool, with all the animal welfare worked out, on a farm that has been transitioning to perennials, transitioning away from annual crops, and seems to have found the puzzle pieces to actually make it thrive. And now the question is: how to get more cows? How to get sturdier cows? How to get stronger cows that can survive outside and thrive outside? And that is surprisingly difficult. Getting cows from too far away almost guarantees that they won’t adapt quickly and won’t thrive.

386 Lauren Tucker - Inner regen work, gut molds, almonds groves in the Central Valley and taste buds07 Oct 202501:05:11

This is a check-in conversation with Lauren Tucker, co-founder of Kiss the Ground and Renourish Studios. We talk about wrapping up the cohort at Renourish Studio, where they’ve worked for three years with a diverse group of entrepreneurs and investors across the US food and agriculture system.

How do you bring the fact that we are part of a living system into your work in commercial organisations? Lauren shares lessons learned, and what they’re doing moving forward. How much of this work is inner work—how we see the world, what we think is possible and not—vs. outer work like planting cover crops, digging swales, showing the financials and nutrient density of almonds, and demonstrating how regenerative farming systems are more alive by measuring biodiversity? How do we open up to opportunities like small water cycle restoration, instead of only thinking about cover crops on our farm?

298 Dan Kittredge – Local, regenerative and organic have no connection to nutrient density, soil health does30 Apr 202401:10:53

A long-overdue check-in interview with Dan Kittredge, founder of the Bionutrient Food Association. We discuss their involvement in the revolutionary beef study, all the research they have been doing and where they have been showing absolutely no connection between the labels, local, organic, regenerative, farmer's market, etc., and nutrient density.

What has been shown is a correlation between soil health and nutrient density. All the claims about regenerative agriculture that leads to more nutrient-dense food, they are only true if it leads to healthier soil, and in some or many cases, it actually doesn’t. It all starts with the soil. Plus, very interestingly, the potential of nutrient density: most of the crops they researched scored very very poor compared to what they could have scored. The pessimist would say: look at the empty crops we are eating depleted of nutrients, the realist would say look at the amazing potential. Crops could be (on certain aspects) 10x or 20x more nutrient dense. Let’s get to work!

297 Chris Henggeler - Standing on the shoulders of giants (Savory, Ingham, Provenza) and managing over 77000 hectares in remote Australia26 Apr 202401:17:16

A conversation with Chris Henggeler, a second-generation high-density, low-duration herder using herds for land management. From one of the most remote places in Australia, we explore big myths like many animals damage the land, to a huge question: can we actually put the new megafauna to work? Farms need to get smaller, and ranches need to get bigger. If you want to retire in security, you have a vested interest in healthy landscapes.

How do we invest as if our grandchildren mattered? How do we ground investing in ecology, and what human activity is restraining nature from building wealth? This and much more in the conversation with Chris.

296 Jojo Mehta - Making ecocide a crime in less than 5 years and for less than 6 million dollars23 Apr 202401:11:38

A conversation with Jojo Mehta, executive director of Stop Ecocide International, about making ecocide a crime, something you can get arrested for and end up in prison. How do we get it from a discussion in lawyer circles and academic circles into international criminal law? And why is it going much faster over the last 5 years than anyone has expected?

Law: an area we rarely touch but has the potential to shift our food and agriculture system, and many other systems, completely. Making ecocide a crime. Ecocide is broadly understood to mean mass damage and destruction of ecosystems – severe harm to nature which is widespread or long-term. Turning ecocide into a crime, most likely it would also over time change our consciousness and get ecocide into the realm of things you simply don’t do. What is even more fascinating is that large companies actually want this, so it creates a level playing field.

This episode offers a rare glimpse into the crossroads of legal innovation and climate activism that could forever alter our relationship with the Earth. We examine the extraordinary momentum gained by movements such as Extinction Rebellion and youth-led climate strikes as well as we pay tribute to the late Polly Higgins, a tireless advocate whose vision of legal reform continues to inspire action. Unveiling the intricate dance of defining ecocide, this conversation brings to light the necessity of a legal framework adaptable to the evolving methods of environmental harm, forecasting a world where atrocities against nature are no longer tolerated.

295 Mateusz Ciasnocha and Maria Virginia Solis Wahnish – From EU Soil Mission to Pope Francis, how to change local and state agriculture and food policies16 Apr 202401:19:49

A conversation with Maria Virginia Solis Wahnish and Mateusz Ciasnocha, both involved in the Farm of Francesco. Maria Virginia is founder of Drink Matera, while Mateusz is the CEO of European Carbon Farmers and member of the EU Soil Mission board. We discuss why it is so important to connect with policymakers and how to actually do that, the importance of farmers' education and a very detailed answer to the 1 billion euro question to enable many more people to get involved in farming. And what has Pope Francis to do with all of this?

How connecting with those who shape our policies can start with a simple visit to a local farm? We delve into the power of personal actions to instigate systemic change, encouraging policymakers to experience the daily life of farmers, paving the way for more grounded and beneficial agricultural policies. The episode culminates with an exploration of the symbiotic relationships between farmers, policymakers, and investors and the transformation of communities through a billion-dollar vision that places technology, collaboration, and human ingenuity at its heart.

This podcast is part of the AI 4 Soil Health project which aims to help farmers and policy makers by providing new tools powered by AI to monitor and predict soil health across Europe. For more information visit ai4soilhealth.eu.

294 Emiliano Mroue – Raising $7.5 million to scale from working with 20.000 to 100.000 farmers12 Apr 202401:08:26

A conversation with Emiliano Mroue, founder of WARC, about their recent funding round, being close to the farmers and why he left a corporate job in Germany to start a farmer focussed anti poverty company in Sierra Leone which turned into a company serving today over 20000 farmers, mostly in Ghana, in the transition to more regenerative practices. What is their secret to be close to the farmers always, not quite often but always?

Smallholder maize farmers at the edge of the Sahara, brutal circumstances in the Sahel mean most farmers are growing to eat and to survive and, with climate change and current farming practices burn and deep tilling, their survival is literally on the line. These soils can be depleted in a decade or less, not like in the global North where we might have 50 to 60 harvests left. So how do you go about behaviour change with farmers that are in poverty, you want to help them to change, but don’t want to risk their fragile livelihood? How do you find the recipes that work in the local context?

In March 2024, the Ghana-based agricultural service provider Warc Africa has successfully closed its Series B round, securing $7.5 million. The fresh capital raised aims to boost Warc Africa’s reach to serve over 100,000 farmers in Ghana, increase their incomes, and protect the soils.

293 Sonja Stuchtey - Have billions flow into regeneration by having accountants agree that it is an investment, not a cost09 Apr 202401:15:14

A conversation with Sonja Stuchtey, co-founder of The Landbanking Group, about innovative financial strategies, accountancy standards and rules, reliable sourcing, better quality and lower prices, investing in the value chain and more.

Let’s say you are an orange juice or chocolate bar producer: your margins are under pressure because the costs of buying raw ingredients have exploded the last few years. What do you do? In any other business you would likely invest in your supply to secure reliable sourcing, better quality and potentially lower prices. Why haven’t we done that in regen ((with some exceptions of fully vertically integrated brands)? Now it seems possible for companies to invest in their value chain so to allow orange farmers to make regen changes in the practises to future proof them.
How? Crucially it comes back to treat it as a long term investment and not as a short term cost which will hurt you margins and, thus, annoy your shareholders. Treating investments (which btw we need billions) in regen as an investment and not a cost sounds so trivial and simple, but it takes a whole lot of technology to measure, report and a lot of talks with the big four accountancy firms to get this done.

292 Walking the land with regenerative farmer Matteo Mazzola, Iside Farm02 Apr 202401:22:59

This is a special episode, the first one ever of the Walking the Land with a Regenerative Farmer, where we walk the land of the farm with a farmer while we talk about regeneration.

[On Youtube you can find a video version of this same conversation!]

Walking through Iside Farm on the Iseo Lake in Italy, with regenerative farmer Matteo Mazzola, we unlock the secrets of regenerative agriculture as we traverse the innovative landscapes crafted by Matteo, Paola and the Iside crew. We embark on a profound exploration of sustainable farming, showcasing Matteo's expertise in farm design, water systems, and the integration of olive trees and animals into the land. Learn how access ways are more than just paths across a farm; they're a vital component in the flow of energy and resources, helping to prevent erosion with concrete strips and alfalfa, and offering additional crop space. Matteo's wisdom extends to the creative reuse of shipping containers, illustrating a commitment to terraforming that marries functionality with environmental stewardship.

At Iside they don't just farm: they are crafting ecosystems where water management is an art and conservation a priority. The episode reveals an inventive water system where ponds atop container roofs serve a triple purpose: roofing, water storage, and purification. From aquaponics to sweet water mollusks, Matteo's methods for quality food production are a testament to his ingenious approach to agriculture. Hear about the noble efforts to combat drought in the Alps and the techniques that are breathing life into arid terrains, transforming them into lush waterscapes.

291 Adrien Pelletier - Why all farmers or most farmers need to become seed breeders again26 Mar 202401:02:33

A conversation with Adrien Pelletier, farmer, breeder, and baker, about wheat, seeds, no till organic farming, why all farmers or most farmers need to become seed breeders again, and why it is really difficult to bake sourdough with traditional organic wheat seeds that are not breed for high productive farms.

Why Adrien want to start changing the world in the most difficult place, at home, which is a large industrial, mostly extractive, commodity wheat-growing region in France? Picture a sea of wheat, large relatively flat fields and no trees. He argues we are in the prehistoric area of organic farming, and there is so much to discover, especially around population wheats. We also learn about no till organic farming is the way to go (and super difficult).

290 Chris Bloomfield and Daniel Reisman – We need animals outside to feed the planet sustainably22 Mar 202401:13:47

A conversation with Chris Bloomfield and Daniel Reisman, co-founders of Collie, a provider of virtual cow guidance system for managing production in grazing, about enabling regenerative dairy, how virtually fencing and cow guidance drastically reduce labour and boost production. To feed ourselves and the planet sustainably, we need to include animals as part of agriculture. We dive deep into going from vegan to grazing, animal welfare, and the state of our planet. How do we enable more farmers to hold complexity on their farms? How do we use technology to enable complexity instead of using technology to make everything mono, as we have done in the last 50 years?

289 Clint Brauer - After an investment of Chipotle, ready to scale his robots to weed hundreds of thousands of acres19 Mar 202400:59:49

A check-in interview with Clint Brauer, founder and CEO of Greenfield, company powering chemical-free agriculture with advanced AI-powered robots, about his dream to get chemicals and expensive machinery out of broad acre, row crop farming (AKA soy corn farming which currently occupies millions of acres around the world, especially in large industrialised agriculture countries), the ending of the era of the chemical, and much more.

After interviewing Clint in September 2020, we check in on what has changed; farmers and many others in the space see that the era of chemicals is ending. It might not look like that yet, but we have already won: chemical-free, broad-acre farming is totally possible; now it is about execution. What else has changed? Is Clint still interested in integrating animals, and why has Chipotle invested in the company?

385 Maria Jensen - Giving cows a voice through epigenetics while improving animal welfare and profitability30 Sep 202501:27:54

A conversation with Maria Jensen, co-founder of Antler Bio, helping dairy farmers identify and address factors limiting their herd’s full potential. What if cows could speak? Especially dairy cows. They would probably share not only the horrors of the dairy industry, but also stories of many dairy farmers who truly try their best to care for their animals and yet still fail. Their cows are neither healthy nor happy, their bank accounts look worse every year, and their mental health and marriages are shaky. Intensive dairy, unless you are massive, is a very difficult industry.

So how do we change this gridlock? By taking technology from the horse racing industry to let cows and herds speak: to share what’s missing, what could be improved. And, surprise, there is plenty of low-hanging fruit in improving dairy cows’ lives practically overnight from better minerals to more water points, and of course the holy grail: super-diverse pasture management.

This leads to healthier cows, fewer vet costs, and more milk.

288 Alfred Grand – Why an Austrian farmer and researcher trained by earthworms is very excited about AI12 Mar 202401:09:40

A conversation with Alfred Grand, farmer at Grand Farm, an organic farm with a high proportion of research, about vermicompost and seed inoculation, but also what policymakers should know about farming. Plus, the role of technology in the regenerative transition and why Alfred is so excited about AI and robotics.

Have you ever witnessed a complete transformation that strikes at the very heart of our connection to the earth? Alfred's path from bike mechanic to pioneering farmer at Grand Farm is one such tale, rich with insights on the symbiosis of technology and tradition in the quest for a sustainable future.

In today's conversation, we navigate the complexities of regenerative farming, challenging the dated notion of soil as a mere nutrient sponge. Alfred, with wisdom gleaned from hands-on experience and research, speaks on the necessity for a paradigm shift in agricultural education and policy. His passion for sustainable practices extends beyond the farm, shedding light on the profound implications these methods have on climate resilience, societal well-being, and our global sustainability goals.

Alfred shares his enthusiasm for the synergy of AI and robotics with timeless farming techniques. We explore how these advances could elevate the intuition and efficiency of market gardening, changing the landscape of agriculture.

This podcast is part of the AI 4 Soil Health project which aims to help farmers and policy makers by providing new tools powered by AI to monitor and predict soil health across Europe. For more information visit ai4soilhealth.eu.

287 Sebastiaan Huisman - Farmers die slowly08 Mar 202400:54:56

A conversation with Sebastiaan Huisman, large-scale organic farmer and advisor, about consulting on many large farm transitions, including the British royal family and working with Wildfarmed. Why is he so optimistic about biodynamic, holistic, and regenerative farming, and why does it all start with children?

Picking apples on an biodynamic farm at age 12 led to setting up one of the largest biodynamic farms in Europe, almost 2000 hectares in Poland, on very very poor soil, Sebastian had an incredible journey from that Dutch farm to the creation of one of Europe's largest biodynamic farms. As he shares his story, we'll uncover the transformative impact of regenerative agriculture, not just on the soil but also on the very heart of the community.

286 Anthony Myint - Sourcing better isn’t going to change the food system, award-winning chef might have the silver bullet for system change05 Mar 202401:15:34

A conversation with Anthony Myint, co-founder and executive director of Zero Foodprint. Award winning chef, Myint was disappointed about his impact on acres by his farm to table restaurants and he is now fully committed to systems change. Koen and Anthony talk about how to really move the needle on many more new practice acres which are acres where regenerative practices are used for the first time, opting out mechanisms where a small opt out fee is added to restaurant bills and food products, collective regeneration, and much more.

When Anthony traded his chef's hat for the mantle of environmental advocate, the culinary world didn't just lose a master of the kitchen—it gained a potent champion for the planet. This episode brings you the powerful narrative of a food industry insider who realized his farm-to-table establishments were merely a drop in the regenerative agriculture bucket. Now, he's on a mission to create waves of change through strategic partnerships and investing directly into soil and ecosystem revival.

The gastronomic landscape is ripe for revolution, and Zero Footprint is leading the charge. Anthony lifts the veil on the potential of opt-out fees—a simple yet surprisingly effective tool for gathering communal resources to nourish our ailing earth.

With his rich tapestry of experience, Anthony guides us through the complexities of regenerative grazing, the importance of local policies in supporting farmers, and the need for robust investment in compost infrastructure.

285 Paul McMahon - With over $500M invested, the regenerative edge is 1-3%27 Feb 202400:57:29

A conversation with Paul McMahon, co-founder of SLM, about why it makes so much sense to put money to work in real regenerative agriculture, yields, and more importantly, profits and the regenerative edge, and more.

Few papers in regenerative agriculture have been shared more than the Investment Case for Ecological Agriculture written by Paul McMahon. We have shared it countless times, learned a whole lot from the simple investment terms describing why it makes so much sense to put money to work in real regeneration. Now it has been updated, even better, it has been completely rewritten and with a lot more science and a lot experience from the field.

In the conversation with one of the most experienced regenerative farmland investors, we explore the modules of our recent video course on why we need to change agriculture and food systems urgently, and why now is the time to do it.

284 Abby Rose - On raising non-extractive funding and the power of AI to help farmers with observation20 Feb 202401:05:47

A conversation with Abby Rose, co-founder of Vidacycle and Farmerama, about the role and potential of AI in observation, alternative investment, the power of transparency, why regenerative viticulture is so interesting, and more.

Why did someone who didn’t really need the money and had serious and reasonable questions about the tendency of startups, both in and outside the regenerative space, to keep raising money, ended up raising funding? Not in a traditional, potentially extractive way, but a revenue share, and service fee, and a cap.

283 Brett Hundley - From Tyson Foods equity analyst to financing millions of trees13 Feb 202401:17:57

A conversation with Brett Hundley, President of Agroforestry Partners (AP), a fund that invests in agroforestry projects on farmland with the strategy of providing uncorrelated and attractive nature-based investment opportunities for investors.

We talked about moving away from an agricultural system that relies on annuals to a system that relies more on perennial trees. If trees are the answer to whatever the question is, how do we get millions of more trees into the ground?

How do we finance them, and how do we make the key stakeholders, the farmers- that need to give agroforestry operators access to their land for 20 40 or maybe a 100 years- comfortable with these farming systems? How do we get comfortable with writing these checks the other essential stakeholder investors that need to pore hundreds of millions into an industry and a system they are not really used to, with long time horizons (chestnuts, for instance, take 7 to 9 years before they bare fruit but could produce for at least 50 or even hundreds of years)?

280 Heather Terry - Monocrops exists because big companies came along and pushed farmers into it30 Jan 202401:09:10

A conversation with Heather Terry, CEO and founder of GoodSam, about how an exit from a chocolate company led to a female-led consumer goods company, how education of consumers is key, networks vs. chains, multi-crop buying, and much more.

Every CEO and high-ranking manager working in food companies should be obligated to visit the farms and farmers they source from. So many decisions in the board rooms would be taken differently. With Heather we dig into a story of a company about how an exit in a chocolate company led to a female led consumer good company focussing on chocolate, coffee, nuts and dried fruits. Preferably sourced from the same farmers paying them 2 to 3 times as much, marketed and sold throughout the US in Whole Foods and online and only being 2 years old. How is that possible? and why according to Heather is this the only way forward?

384 Thomas Kliemt - A farming incubator with a 75% success rate (that nobody knows about) lands in Germany23 Sep 202500:53:01

A check-in conversation with Thomas Kliemt, formerly part of Kulturland, which has been growing and they are suddenly, after 10 years in the making, an overnight success. In the first 6 months of 2025, they accelerated their fundraising by 100%, raising the same €2.5m they raised in all of 2024.

Once you enable access to land, transition it into the commons as an anti-speculation measure, and remove the huge debt burden new farmers face, who is actually going to farm this land? That’s what Thomas’ next venture is working to solve, inspired by a highly successful French model which has trained hundreds of farmers in running their businesses through incubator farms: new farmers work their own land for 3 years, run their enterprises, and receive a salary. Afterward, they are ready to take over a farm elsewhere and, remarkably, over 75% of them do. Many of the rest join other farms as employees. This is an incredibly high success rate for any incubator, and the model has already scaled to Belgium, Spain, and Finland. Now Thomas is bringing it to Germany.

277 Keith Agoada, the regenerative landscape orchestrator16 Jan 202401:03:38

A conversation with Keith Agoada, CEO and co-founder of Producers Trust, a global network of farmers, farmer groups, and producer groups, about indoor greenhouse growing, aggregation, sorting, quality control, packaging, processing, and more.

From indoor greenhouse growing to founding a company, which is now turning into a regenerative landscape orchestrator, and why we are in the perfect storm at the moment. In the last 12 months, or even the last 6 months, we have seen an explosion of interest from corporates in value chain regeneration. Why now? A mix of shifting consumer demand, an European antideforestation law, and genuine massive long-term supply chain issues.

What does that mean for small holder farmers who are generally completely excluded from these global markets, how can they participate and benefit?

276 Calla Rose Ostrander – In our healing is our evolution as a society 12 Jan 202401:06:20

Emma Chow and Calla Rose Ostrander explore the regenerative mindset and the importance of integrating human behaviours into natural cycles, recognising abundance and the physical capacity for healing, burnout, the perception of time scarcity, prioritising regenerative activities, and much more.

Regenerative mind is about healing. It makes Calla Rose think back to her experience suffering a brain injury, which taught her what it means to heal — her brain was literally regenerating itself. The regenerative mindset is underpinned by a belief that we have enough, the belief of abundance. This way of seeing the world is something we already know; it’s just about coming back to it.

275 Nicolas Enjalbert - Let’s disrupt the oligopoly seeds industry, currently bad for everyone, people, planet and flavour09 Jan 202401:19:35

A conversation with Nicolas Enjalbert, CEO and Co-Founder of SeedLinked, an innovative company digitizing collaborative breeding and a seed breeder, about our current seed system, flavour and nutrients, collaborative seed research, and much more.

Seeds, it all starts with seeds (and soil) but mostly seeds. And our current seeds system is structurally not able to grow seeds that are adaptive to local niches, weather, let alone flavour or nutrients etc., but only able to grow seeds for large large monoculture agriculture systems. But 97% of the global farmers aren't large monoculture farmers, and 70% of our global food is grown by them. Who grows seeds for them, and how are we going to innovate and adapt there? This interview takes a deep dive into the world of collaborative seed research, about yields, nutrients and flavour? And yes, we also tackle thorny topics like GMO, CRISPR and your favourite heirloom tomato.

273 Eric Smith - Commoditization is the root cause of all ecological destruction and human health impacts02 Jan 202401:19:39

A conversation with Eric Smith, CEO and co-founder of Edacious, who is building a technology platform for differentiating quality of food. Eric and Koen talk about measuring quality and how to turn around objectively one of the most complex systems ever, from one driven by chemicals to one driven by biology, with abundance as an outcome. The solution, according to Eric, is radical transparency.

Get ready for a deep dive into the world of nutrient density with one of the few people building a company in the space. Why did they choose to focus mainly on cows and grains? Hint: the climate impact there is just enormous. Shockingly non of the retailers or food companies is measuring anything when it comes to quality! Everything is about quantity and availability.

What we learned in 2023 about cooling the planet, food as medicine, regenerative renaissance, indigenous knowledge and decommodification27 Dec 202300:12:50

As we are wrapping up 2023 we look back at a year which feels even crazier than 2022. Another war has started and we have been flooded literally with extreme weather events. Every month seems to have been the warmest, driest, wettest etc. in history! Let’s look at what we covered and learned in the podcast:

This Changes Everything: Cooling the Planet

What if water is more important than carbon? It’s the question posed by Alpha Lo, physicist and writer of the Climate Water Project, about the importance of slowing water down, the connection between drought, fire, and floods, and the massive role water plays in heating and cooling our planet. We hosted many other conversations, a full series on Water Cycle, about this key (and neglected) topic. Rodger Savory, joined us to talk about scale and cows, how to kickstart regeneration in desert situations, changing local weather patterns, abundance, soil bacteria, conventional agriculture, WW2 and much more.

Neal Spackman rejoined the podcast and shared why it is so difficult to to raise funding for this kind of projects while professor Millàn Millàn explained how to restore the small water cycle in the Mediterranean, why the summer storms and rains have disappeared and how this turned out to be connected to massive snows in the UK and massive floods in Central Europe.

“Healthy forests invest their capital to create their own rain” said Anastassia Makarieva because, according to the latest science, healthy ecosystems, and specifically healthy forests, regulate moisture and thus rain.

272 Reginaldo Haslett-Marroquin - Chickens are the perfect entry point to decolonize our food system22 Dec 202301:19:28

A conversation with Reginaldo Haslett-Marroquin, CEO of Tree Range Farms, farmers and producers which a focus on establishing or maintaining a “jungle like” habitat that honours the true natural environment of chickens. When they do this, they not only create a better habitat for the chickens, they create a better world. We talk about using indigenous knowledge to transform the food system, how chickens could and should be raised with a focus on soil health and how to structure business with an indigenous mindset.

Thinking and seeing the world from a chicken perspective probably is not something you do everyday, but actually it is a fundamental piece of the regenerative food system puzzle. Sounds weird? Get ready for a wide ranging interview on why chickens are such a perfect entry point into the regenerative production world, but also on regenerative mindset shift and decolonizing our food system.

271 Ethan Soloviev - What is regenerative agriculture and why it is the wrong question to ask19 Dec 202300:48:30

We welcome back on the show Ethan Soloviev, founder of Terra Genesis, now Chief Innovation Officer at HowGood and an advocate for regenerative agriculture. We take a deep dive into the four paradigms of agriculture and how regenerative agriculture is a journey, not a destination. It is not romantic nor naive, it is not anti science nor anti technology.

Welcome to a very special episode. This is part of our online education course to accelerate Your Path Forward in Regenerative Food and Agriculture.

The course wants to help you accelerate your understanding of the complexities of the current food and an agriculture system and why a broad and deep regeneration is so relevant and interesting. We focussing on what your role can be in this transition, what companies need to be build? What investments need to be made, if you are in the position, and what other roles you can play if you work in big food and big ag that are needed to transition?

As part of the lesson about what is regenerative agriculture and food, we have Ethan Soloivev joining us for a conversation and we tackle that elephant immediately. We talk about why that is the wrong question to ask, what are the four paradigms of agriculture and, of course, about a lot more.

383 Rasmus Nørgaard - From bricks to soil: rethinking real estate from the ground up16 Sep 202501:22:37

Straight from Copenhagen, a conversation with Rasmus Nørgaard, co-founder of Urban Partners, Home.Earth and Nordhus with over two decades of experience in real estate, pushing the boundaries of sustainability within conventional systems. With Rasmus we dive deep into the world of real estate. The built environment is one of the three major sectors that needs a complete systems change, alongside with agrifood and energy.

What happens when you reimagine real estate development from first principles? What can the regenerative agriculture and food sector learn from one of the pioneers of sustainable real estate? Rasmus shares the revolutionary approach behind Home.Earth, a company proving that sustainable, affordable housing can also be profitable. He is building a much more holistic for-profit company that is reinventing real estate from the ground up. Yes, we talk a lot about buildings and homes, but there are so many overlaps with agriculture and food. Let’s face it: soil is a real asset in investment terms.

268 Giles Hutchins - How we can use the achiever mindset as a tool for crafting a regenerative world08 Dec 202301:00:04

A conversation with Giles Hutchins, executive coach, keynote speaker and author of Leading by Nature, about the role of mindset in regenerative food systems, the achiever mentality, reconnecting with nature and achieving a more sustainable business mindset, interconnectedness and the “field” in science and spirituality and more.

We kick things off by diving into the crucial shift towards a regenerative mindset, a paradigm shift from the potentially harmful "achiever" mindset. Giles imparts wisdom on the importance of staying grounded, cultivating meaningful relationships and the risks we face if we allow the traditional achiever mindset to dictate our solutions to environmental crises.

267 Farmers’ Philosophy series! Dayana Andrade, farmer at Amadeco and author of Vida em Sintropia05 Dec 202301:01:57

This is a conversation between Koen van Seijen, host of the Investing in Regenerative Agriculture and Food podcast, and Dayana Andrade, researcher, author of Life in Syntropy | Vida em Sintropia and farmer at Amadeco Syntropic Farm. A deep dive into syntropic farming, companion crops opposed to the olive monoculture afflicting the Apulian region, in the South of Italy.

Dayana shares her personal journey, explaining how the lessons and practice learned with Ernst Götsch altered her view of landscapes and challenged traditional notions of competition and scarcity in nature. We also discuss the transformative power of human intervention in nature, exploring the latest findings in soil science and plant growth. Finally, we explore how finding our habitat and understanding our role in the ecosystem can be a fulfilling journey.

This episode is part of the Farmers’ Philosophy series.
We can learn so much more from farmers than how to restore soil. Regeneration goes much further and deeper. That’s why this is the second episode of the Farmers’ Philosophy series, where we make time with farmers who are pushing the boundaries of regenerative agriculture, we sit down with them and take time to explore more than soil health. We discuss what we can learn, what we can see, what we can observe when we get in touch with life again and understand we’re all an ecosystem.

266 Laurence Tremblay – How mindset is everything when turning chocolate into a tool for good01 Dec 202301:13:40

A conversation with Laurence Tremblay, co-founder and business manager of Guatemalan social enterprise, Cacao Source and founder of the nonprofit arm, Give Back to the Source. Emma Chow, the host of the Regenerative Minds series, explores with Laurence the regenerative mindset in the chocolate industry, cacao's potential for regeneration, cacao farming, culture, and community in Guatemala, and much more.

Emma had a chance to meet some of the Cacao Source team when visiting Guatemala in 2022. Even though Laurence and Emma didn't meet back then, in this conversation they discuss how to design enterprises to realise cacao’s unseen potential while weaving a new story for chocolate, from a different set of values. They talk about regenerative farming and indigenous communities, empowering women, personal responsibility and integrity in food and ag industry.

The Regenerative Mind series is supported by our friends at Stray who are exploring systemic investing with awe and wonder as well as our friends at Mustardseed Trust, who are enabling a transition to a care economy that fosters regenerative food systems.

265 Josh and Rebecca Tickell - If you like sick people and climate chaos keep investing in chemical agriculture28 Nov 202301:11:52

A conversation with Josh Tickell and Rebecca Harrell Tickell, producers, directors, and writers of the movie Common Ground and previously Kiss the Ground. We talk about their two movies, food choices and their impact on the environment and health, the chemical agriculture model going bankrupt and much more.

What do you do after you create the enormous hit Kiss the Ground? More than 10 million people saw the feature-length documentary; 39 million schoolchildren in the US saw the school version; and it counts for 1 billion media visualizations on Netflix.
What do you do next, how do you choose what to focus on?  What do you double click on and do you dare to take on the large agro chemical complex?

264 Sara Balawajder - Building Lukas Walton's impact first food and ag portfolio24 Nov 202300:54:47

A conversation with Sara Balawajder, Vice President of Builders Vision, who leads the impact first food and agriculture portfolio, about the opportunities of regenerative agriculture and food, and specifically nutrient density, and insurance, not health insurance, but farmers' insurance.

Lukas Walton, a grandson of Walmart founder Sam Walton, established Builders Vision as an umbrella for his philanthropic, investment and advocacy work in 2021. What does one of lealing impact investing and phylantripic platforms in the US, Lukas Walton of the Walmart founders' family, think about the opportunities of regenerative agriculture and food and specifically nutrient density? What would she love to invest in or grant to? What does she feel like is missing out there and what have they already been backing over the last years?

263 Jan-Gisbert Schultze - How a VC investor got bitten by the regeneration bug and went via Joel Salatin, Gabe Brown and Ernst Gotsch deep into syntropic agroforestry21 Nov 202300:50:46

A conversation with Jan-Gisbert Schultze, a VC investor who turned into a regenerative enthusiast and bought a small olive farm, which he is turning into the first syntropic farm in Salento, in Puglia (Italy), a region battered by monoculture olive trees.

After reading The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals by Michael Pollen, Jan got bitten by the regeneration bug. He attended courses with Joel Salatin, Gabe Brown and Ernst Goetch where he went deep into syntropic agroforestry. That led Jan to buy a masseria, a small farm in Puglia, in a region where now more than 15 million trees are dying because of modern agriculture, ploughing, chemicals and, of course, the xylella fastidiosa, a virus which seems to be the last straw on the camels back for these poor suffering trees. Finally, Jan managed to convince Dayana Andrade and Felipe Pasini, the oldest students of Ernst Goetch, to come and help regenerate his farm Amadeco.

The time of monoculture olives might be over in Salento, Puglia, but the future of olive trees as part of a diverse, extremely productive system seems just beginning, or coming back as there are records of the Romans already farming olive trees in a very diverse agroforestry system. Why is Jan so hopeful about the future, and what has accounting to do with it?

262 Rodger Savory - Restore the water cycles and reverse desertification in California, regenerating 150.000 acres with 600.000 cows17 Nov 202301:14:58

A conversation with Rodger Savory, ecologist, land manager, and ranch owner, about scale and cows, how to kickstart regeneration in desert situations, changing local weather patterns, abundance, soil bacteria, conventional agriculture, WW2 and much more.

Many millions of hectares of agricultural land around the world have turned into deserts, and many millions are about to turn into deserts with current agricultural practices. Brittle environments (with a rain and dry season) won’t regenerate by themselves when you remove humans, animals. Temperate climates do, they turn into a jungle. And we have a lot of brittle environments around the world.
Our current belief is that a desert will always be a desert, and there is no way to turn it around or regenerate it into abundance. What if there was? What would be the business case? And even more extreme what, if done at the right scale, like at least 150.000 acres in South Eastern California? How would local weather patterns change and would exponential abundance be possible?

261 Chris Tolles – All the venture capital in the world can’t make soils change faster14 Nov 202301:11:49

A conversation with Chris Tolles, founder of Yard Stick, about soil carbon and the connection to changing agriculture practises, insetting vs offsetting, where in the hype cycle the soil carbon market is and why more companies should get really good at doing one thing instead of saying yes to every opportunity.

How difficult is it really to measure in field, instant, accurate and cheaply? Yardstick just raised $12 million, mostly VC climate money, to commercialise their technology. Warning! This is super difficult and won’t go as fast as many of us wish or want it to go.

260 Thimm Zwiener - Using chat GPT and the best regen advisors to create a regenerative hotline for all10 Nov 202301:00:09

A conversation with Thimm Zwiener, co-founder of FarmOn, a regenerative hotline for independent farming advice, about how to give everyone of the 600 million farmers in the world access to a trustworthy and regenerative field experience when they have questions, the role of technology, especially the newly hyped large language models like ChatGPT, the risks, and much more.

It is safe to say we will never get there with our current approach, having amazing consultants and advisors who are usually overworked and can never reach enough farmers to really have a large impact. How do we make the knowledge accessible to all while creating a self-sustaining business and not falling into the trap of gatekeeping, plus on top of that rewarding the people who have assembled this knowledge in the first place?

382 Dianne, Ian and Matthew Haggerty - Food, not commodities: how regenerative agriculture works at scale on 63,000 acres09 Sep 202501:31:51

Legend alarm on the podcast! We are happy to welcome the Haggerty's family, Ian and Dianne, together with their son Matthew, on the podcast sharing their 30+ year journey- from being considered the hippie weirdos to leading a movement in Western Australia- showing that you can absolutely farm regeneratively at scale, in this case over 60,000 acres, with deep regeneration. Leading regenerative farmer and co-founder of Natural Intelligence Farming (NIF), the Haggertys' farm is a living example of a harmonious alignment of soil, plant, animal, and human microbiomes in farm ecosystems.
They regularly take on new land, but only if they feel the land wants and needs them to manage it. In other words, they don’t go looking for land, the land finds them. Often this land is extremely degraded, and they bring it back to life with the help of sheep, whose gut microbiome kickstarts regeneration, followed by well-integrated annuals.
We also dive into the different water cycles they are influencing and how these have even affected local rainfall. Of course, we unpack the massive mindset shift that is fundamental in the regenerative transition, vibrations, quantum agriculture, and rebuilding local supply webs. We cover it all.

259 Ichsani Wheeler and Lenka Danilovic – How to make water our friend again thanks to hippies with satellites and indigenous water management 07 Nov 202301:18:15

A conversation with Ichsani Wheeler and Lenka Danilovic. Ichsani is a scientist, co-founder of OpenGeoHub and EnvirometriX, while Lenka is an hydrologist and intern at OpenGeoHub. In this conversation, we talk about the world of remote sensing, and we unpack what the eyes in the sky can help us learn about indigenous land and water management.

How far back can we look at arid landscapes that used to be managed to produce abundance? How did they manage extreme weather events like El Niño, or did they see them as extreme abundance events? With a wealth of practical science knowledge between Ichsani and Lenka and the absolute cutting edge of open-source remote sensing, this is a rare treat to understand how to make water our friend again.

This episode is part of the Water Cycles series, supported by The Nest, where we interview the dreamers and doers who are using the latest technology to figure out where to intervene first. They are making or trying to make the investment and return calculations. so what is missing, what is holding us back? Maybe we lack the imagination to back them and try regeneration at scale.

258 Emma Fuller - Making soulless capital who doesn’t care about regenerative agriculture invest in it03 Nov 202301:16:02

A conversation with Emma Fuller, co-founder of Fractal, about the transition to regenerative practices or outcomes of the millions of acres of broad-acre row cropping, corn, soy, and wheat in the US, Brazil, Argentina. Fractal provides farmers with equity financing by investing alongside them in their farmland to fund their growth.

We all know the amazing examples that are pushing the boundaries of agriculture: syntropic agroforestry, silvopasture, food forests, complex intercropping, very advanced CSA, no dig market garden, or even agroforestry at a relative scale. But what about the rest? What are we going to do with all those acres and how do we get regenerative practices, regenerative outcomes or outcomes we like and seek like soil health etc at scale? Is there a path to having hundreds of thousands of acres in transition? Can soulless investors and the least interested in soil health farmers get these outcomes? Is there strong consumer pressure?

257 Zach Ben - Breaking down centuries of oppression through indigenous baby food31 Oct 202300:53:22

A conversation with Zach Ben, cofounder, along with his wife Mary, of Bidii Baby Foods, an indigenous baby food line created by farmers and new parents to increase access to traditional foods in early childhood. We talk about the role of farming and stewarding the land in Navajo Nation and the role of nutrition and health with newborns.

After centuries of oppression, violence, and genocide, could some healing and regeneration come from a baby food company? We explore that impossible question with Zach in a fascinating conversation also about the potential of healing centuries of horror one step at the time.
