The standards cover the full range of environmental, social, and governance issues, and they provide information for investors to understand the sustainability impacts, risks, and opportunities of the companies in which they invest. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (referred to as the US FDA) is the governmental agency in the U.S. that regulates food contact substances, materials, and articles. All existing regulations are published in the Code of Federal Regulations (also commonly referred to as the CFR). More specifically, Title 21 CFR parts 170-199 regulations are applicable to food additives. In the first podcast of the series, our experts discuss the general requirements outlined in these regulations.

The E.U. Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requires ESG reporting on a level never seen before and will capture a whole host of companies that previously were not subject to mandatory nonfinancial reporting requirements, including public and private non-EU companies that meet certain EU-presence thresholds. For US companies, the CSRD rules will result in mandatory reporting on a broader set of ESG topics than those required under current and proposed Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) rules. In June The European Commission released a series of measures aimed at bolstering its sustainable finance framework, including a new proposal to regulate ESG ratings providers, and the introduction of a new set of criteria for sustainable economic activities under the EU Taxonomy. As part of the package announced on 13 June 2023, the European Commission published the draft text of a regulation on the transparency and integrity of ESG rating activities (ESG Rating Regulation).
