SÉANCE – part documentary, part ghost story – Taggart offers us haunting images exploring Spiritualist practices in the US, England and Europe: 150 of her original photographs, many of which have never been published, as well as rare historical photographs. Supported with a commentary on her experiences, a foreword by Dan Aykroyd, creator of Ghostbusters (1984) and fourth-generation Spiritualist, and illustrated essays from curator Andreas Fischer and artist Tony Oursler, SÉANCE examines Spiritualism’s relationship with human celebrity, its connections to art, science, and technology, and its intrinsic bond with the medium of photography. The book concludes with the debate over ectoplasm and how Spiritualism can move forward in the twenty-first century.

American photographer Shannon Taggart became aware of spiritualism as a teenager when her cousin received a message from a medium that revealed details about her grandfather’s death. In 2001, while working as a photojournalist, she began photographing where that message was received―Lily Dale, New York, home to the world’s largest spiritualist community, proceeding to other communities in, for example, Arthur Findlay College in the UK. Taggart expected to spend one summer figuring out the tricks of the spiritualist trade. Instead, spiritualism’s mysterious processes, earnest practitioners and neglected photographic history became an inspiration. Her project evolved into an 18-year journey that has taken her around the world in search of “ectoplasm”― the elusive substance that is said to be both spiritual and material.

Shannon Taggart is an artist based in Brooklyn, New York. Her work has been exhibited and featured internationally, including within the publications TIME, New York Times Magazine, Discover, and Newsweek, and her photographs have been recognized by Nikon, Magnum Photos and the Inge Morath Foundation, American Photography, and the Alexia Foundation for World Peace. Gratitude is perhaps the most important key to finding success and happiness in the modern day. Knowing what we appreciate in life means knowing who we are, what matters to us and what makes each day worthwhile. Paying attention and having awareness to what we feel grateful for puts us in a positive frame of mind. It connects us to the world around us, to ourselves and yes even a world that is “unseen” with the physical eye! Gratitude defies easy classification and it has been conceptualized as an emotion, an attitude, a moral virtue, a habit, a personality trait, or even a coping response. The word gratitude is derived from the Latin root “gratia,” meaning grace, graciousness, or gratefulness! All derivatives from this Latin root have to do with kindness, generousness, gifts, the beauty of giving and receiving, or getting something for nothing. Researchers, philosophers, poets, writers, spiritual practitioners and guru’s have long speculated throughout history at many different locations around the planet that gratitude does indeed possess “happiness-bestowing properties” when used in our own lives.

As an important mental health principle, the benefits of gratitude extend far beyond what we may imagine in body, mind and spirit. Scientific studies have found that gratitude is associated with many areas of our lives if applied and used on a daily basis:

* Greater happiness
* More optimism and positive emotions
* New and lasting relationships
* Better health
* More progress towards personal goals and achievements
* Fewer aches and pains (I can relate to this one!)
* More alertness
* More determination and improved self-esteem
* Better sleep

With no downside or negative energy, emotions or thoughts to practicing more gratitude and thankfulness in one’s life, it does seem like a goal all humans should start to embrace and strive for on a daily basis on the many roads of life! Let’s go “Prospecting!”

The human instinct to survive is our most powerful drive! Since the days of animals climbing out of the primordial muck or crawling out of the vast oceans to our early ancestors moving from all fours to walking upright, both evolution, consciousness and awareness have guided humans to improve, reproduce and be led by the greatest instinct of survival. The essential purpose of survival is to increase the chances of survival on a daily basis using and applying survival value so that humans can continue to evolve, grow, transform, and eventually transcend! How we think, what emotions we experience, our behavior in a “dog eat dog” world to our social, platonic and romantic interludes of Life.

L.I.F.E. – Learn It From Experience

Our “fight, flight or freeze” reaction may be our best-known expression of our survival instinct. This response set is triggered when we (and all animals) perceive a situation as a threat to our existence; our sympathetic nervous system activates rapid emotional, psychological, and physical changes. Psychologically, our senses are heightened and we are able to make faster decisions. Physically, we get a shot of adrenaline, our heart rate increases, blood flow is diverted to essential parts of the body, and we experience increased strength and stamina. Without these essential changes, our primitive forbearers would have died off long ago not passing along through the cellular memory and genes of surviving including the ability to survive in modern-day society.

A bolt of lighting left Lisa with severe burns and muscle damage that would take 7 years to heal. When Lisa had given up all hope of survival she began to have contact with the light-workers. Through them she began to understand the karma of her path through life and how she can move from being stuck in her karma towards living in her dharma.
