Deng Ming-Dao is an author, artist, and teacher. He is the author of: 365 Tao; Chronicles of Tao; Scholar Warrior; Everyday Tao; The Lunar Tao; The Living I Ching; Zen: The Art of Modern Eastern Cooking; and The Wisdom of the Tao, Every Journey Begins With a Single Step, and The Way of Heart and Beauty.

His books have been translated into a variety of European and Asian languages. 

Deng Ming-Dao has trained in Chinese martial arts since 1975. His teachers have come from Beijing, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and two Taoist mountains, Huashan and Wudangshan. He has been most involved with the internal systems of Xingyiquan, Baguazhang, and Taijiquan, and he has given many workshops to introduce Chinese martial arts and Taoist wellness techniques.

Do you have events, emotions, or feelings lingering from your younger years? How does that impact the way you move through the world today? Are you still carrying the pain? The first of the Thirteen Ghost points is all about what is your authentic door to the world. What are you showing the world? Has trauma changed the way you interface with those around you? Do you have a door with a peep hole and lots of deadbolts, or is your door blown off and letting just anyone or everyone in? Are you hooked into the past? Do you know the way out?

The first step is to become the watcher and find the areas of your life where you have allowed yourself to be your true self. 👀 Can you be truly YOU vs the YOU that is being influenced by past trauma and external pressures? What have you acquired along that way that takes you away from being your true self? ☯️ Listen in as Leta and Jaye share tips on how you can identify your hooks by examining areas where your True Qi may have been distorted.  🚀 Take your first step towards self-discovery and healing with gentle kindness toward yourself!    - How you interface with the world: Observe your interactions in daily life, for example, at social events or while talking to people in mundane settings like the grocery store. It's normal to interface in different ways depending on your Element: If you're Wood, you'll likely be private, if you're Fire, you might be shy, if you're Earth, you might be really open, if you're Metal, you might hold back and watch, if you're Water, you might feel socially awkward at times and be very social other times. - Self-Doubt: Identify areas where you are doubting yourself and how this could be linked to past experiences. - Perception of the World: Examine whether you see the world as a threat and how this affects your authenticity. - Walking Your Path: Check if you are metaphorically on your life's intended path or if you are taking a detour. - Unconscious Beliefs: Understand if your deepest unconscious beliefs align with your stated beliefs. - Obsessive Thinking: Notice if certain thoughts dominate your mind and how to bring balance. - Authentic Self-Expression: Verify how you speak about yourself; avoid self-denigration and be genuine. - Heart Pains and Reactions: Be aware of deep emotions and how they can trigger disproportionate reactions. - Intimacy and True Qi: Explore your comfort level with intimacy and sharing your true self with loved ones. - Guilt, Shame, and Control: Acknowledge feelings of guilt and shame and how external control affects your Qi. - Identity and Authenticity: Reflect on whether you are the person you truly want to be and how closely you align with your authentic self.   Being gentle with yourself during this observation process.     • The yin and yang of each element – Oreo double stuff.  Each meridian of the body has an organ and an element.
      • Yang – more active/doing and processing
      • Yin – more quiet and stores something
    • Body types – Yang types are thinner and bonier; Yin types are a bit fleshier and rounder
    • Every person is on a continuum from yin to yang.
    • Wood
      • Gall Bladder/yang – makes the todo lists and delegates the plans 
      • Liver/yin – stores big plans and vision
    • Earth
      • Stomach/yang – hardworking, digesting thoughts and analyzing
      • Spleen/yin – present and listening, philosophical, storing big ideas
    • Metal
      • Colon/yang – talkers, finding the gems in the garbage, recyclers
      • Lungs/yin – holds awareness and being of service

      • Bladder/yang – active fast waters, constant motion
      • Kidney/yin – slower waters, holding your ambition

  • The Talk – "Talking is just another way that elemental vibration is manifesting through humanity. Think about the difference between between an assertive, commanding voice like an army sergeant directing a squad to do something vs. a hospice nurse asking a patient to move her legs. You simply cannot use the same voice for both of those situations. You have to modulate your voice accordingly, and that would tap into the Five Elements. You just tap into that element."
  • The Eyes
    • Wood – Direct laser beam eyes
    • Fire – Flirty eyes
    • Earth – Big round eyes that envelop you, softer look
    • Metal – Defocused eyes, x-ray vision
    • Water – Cat-slit suspicious eyes or intense big eyes
  • The Smells – If you want to figure out someone's smell, just walk into their bedroom and take a big sniff. Smells have energy. The Wood and Water smells are higher, and the Fire and Earth smells are in the middle like around your head. The metal smell is low, like down by the floor.

  • The Walks –
    • Wood – "You don't really have hips or knees. It looks like you're marching in a formation. Maybe we will make it cuter. Think of penguins marching. Think of an army of a thousand penguins marching with combat boots. Now that's a visual you won't get anywhere else because penguins like big shoes. And Woods like big shoes."
    • Fire – "You can fake a fire walk by lifting your heels up. If you do it more like helium is lifting you up from the top, then it will look like a real fire walk. In fact, your butt should wiggle a little bit. We call it the butt wiggle, just from the motion of the bounce."
    • Earth – "I want you stick out your buddha belly. I want you to rub that belly, really lovingly, daringly feel how you feel when you put all that energy there. You want to relax, you want to slow down, you want to be grounded… In fact, you know what? Take off your shoes… Earth people love to be barefoot."
    • Metal – "Imagine a string tied to the top of your head, and its holding your head up, and you're dangling from the string like a puppet… Let your hands and your arms feel floppy and loose. Think of Pinocchio on a string, kind of dangling. Lift your head and your nose, like you're a little snooty Pinocchio, and then you try to start to walk, but fluidly, not like its your first day on puppet strings."
    • Water – "Imagine tons of energy in your lower back. Feel it in your kidneys. Imagine you have two Harley Davidson engines in your low back, revving. Vroom vroom, and push your hips forward. Your feet just barely leave the ground. Waters don't scuff their feet, unless they're wearing Uggs, let's remember the Uggs days when it was really hard to tell Waters. We had to make them take off their Uggs."
