ECOFASCISM: leviathan or lifejacket of humankind? – Roanoke with Fernando Gutiérrez Olaizola08 Oct 202400:17:52

“ECOFASCISM: leviathan or lifejacket of humankind?” is a multi-author book featuring 36 top futurist voices who have come together to explore of our climate future beyond purely climate data, through the lens of Ecofascism.

The premise for all the stories in the book is this: The year is 2050. Temperatures have risen over +2ºC. Global population has reached 9.8 billion. Pressure on natural systems is at its peak. A new global movement has arisen; a totalitarian system has been enforced, based on the minimum climate footprint on every aspect of our society.

In this episode, Florida-based futurist Fernando Gutiérrez Olaizola outlines the context for the book and shares an overview of his chapter entitled “Roanoke” which describes a plea for assistance from Earth by the head of the first Mars colony.

Shifting Attitudes Towards Work – What Modern Workers Want with Cat Barnard07 May 202400:29:55

Welcome to the latest episode of the Informing Choices Mini-Pod, where in partnership with Working the Future (https://www.workingthefuture.com), we are exploring Shifting Attitudes Towards Work – one of the 10 meta-trends impacting the future of work identified in Working the Future’s Foresight Focus 2024 report (https://workingthefuture.com/foresight-focus-report). We are unpacking evidence of shifts in attitudes to work and what employees want from their jobs and then exploring three big drivers behind this meta-trend and how they interact to reshape views on work. Then, we will look ahead to 2030 and consider optimistic and pessimistic scenarios. Finally, we will consider what organisations can do right now with these insights; the moves should they be making to stay ahead and make the most of these shifts. Once again, Working the Future co-founder Cathryn Barnard is joining me on the podcast. The Future of Ageing with David Wood04 Feb 202100:20:26

The recent BBC Ideas video “How safe is it to hack the ageing process?” is an interesting indication that the notion of managing, delaying, or even stopping the ageing process is becoming mainstream. The idea of immortality has been a dream for many people for as long as humanity has existed, but what is the reality of anti-ageing approaches and technologies? Are we really on the cusp of being able to cure ageing?

To talk about The Future of Ageing, I am delighted to welcome futurist speaker, analyst, commentator, and writer David Wood to the podcast.

The Future Post-Pandemic Home with Alex Whittington and Sylvia Gallusser28 Jan 202100:23:42

As we have seen across the globe, the Covid-19 pandemic has morphed from a health crisis, to an economic crisis, to a social crisis, and increasingly a political crisis. And as society attempts to come to terms with changing how we live our lives during the pandemic, attention begins to focus the desirability or returning to “normal” compared to the advantage (or horrendous prospect, depending our one’s point of view) of transitioning to a “new normal”. The question to pose is, what might new normal look like?

We are going to look at one aspect of this very broad question. So, to talk about The Future Post-Pandemic Home, I am delighted to welcome US-based futurists Alex Whittington and Sylvia Gallusser to the podcast.

You can learn more about Alex and Sylvia on LinkedIn; here for Alex and here for Sylvia, and keep abreast of the research being undertaken by the Grey Sawn Guild.

The Future of Digital Media with Michael Mascioni 22 Jan 202100:17:26

Digital media is everywhere and is playing and increasingly significant role in retail experiences, travel browsing and buying, gaming, communication, and how we distribute and consume information. The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the advantages that this family of technologies can offer when human contact is limited. The question is, how will digital media evolve in the future?

To consider this question, I am delighted to welcome marketing consultant, writer, and futurist Michael Mascioni to the podcast.

The Future of Sustainable Urban Agriculture with Diana Davidson07 Jan 202100:17:43

Agriculture is responsible for 9% of all Greenhouse Gas emissions in the UK, according to Farm Carbon Toolkit. These emissions are the result of livestock rearing and natural processes, crop fertilisation using chemical fertilisers, materials used to build and maintain farms, energy use of farm buildings and vehicles, transport and distribution during and after growing, soil based emissions from disturbing soils, and waste produced as a result of farming processes. So how might the urbanisation of agriculture change this landscape in the future?

To talk about these issues within the broad theme of The Future of Sustainable Urban Agriculture, I am joined by Diana Davidson, who helps enterprise develop performance for the zero carbon emissions economy, to the podcast.

Reflection and Speculation – The 100th Podcast Episode with Steve Wells27 Mar 202400:12:14
Having reached the notable milestone of 100 episodes of my podcast, I wanted to do something a little different. To a lesser or greater extent, I have covered different aspects of: Communication; Education and Skills; Enterprise and Economy; Food and Agriculture; Health and Wellbeing; Jobs and Work; the Natural Environment; Politics and Geopolitics; Social and Societal Shifts; Sustainability; and of course, Technology and Systems. But it is often technology that ties these topic areas together. All of which got me thinking: 1) What were the technological innovations that had a profound impact on life, society, and business, 100 years ago? 2) And what might the technological advancements be that achieve the same recognition in 100 years’ time? So this episode is about my thoughts on the five technologies significant in the 1920’s and those that could be significant in the 2120’s. A Day in the Life of an Enhanced Human in 2050 with Rohit Talwar14 Feb 202400:40:36

Human enhancements can cover a wide range of capabilities, from increased strength, endurance, and speed to enhanced memory, focus, and emotional control. They may also extend to more sophisticated modifications such as the integration of digital interfaces directly with the human brain, allowing for direct communication with computers and other digital devices, or the augmentation of sensory perceptions; for example, seeing a broader spectrum of light or hearing beyond the normal range. So, with this as context, the question we are addressing in this episode of the podcast is, “what might a day in the life of an enhanced human in 2050 be like?” To explore this fascinating question, I am delighted to welcome back to the podcast futurist and keynote speaker Rohit Talwar.  You can learn more about Rohit and his work by connecting with him as follows: Email: Rohit@fastfuture.com LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/rohit-talwar-futurist-keynote-speaker Twitter: https://twitter.com/fastfuture Website: https://fastfuture.com Credits Images Titles https://pixabay.com/photos/doors-choices-choose-decision-1690423 Other images OpenAI DALL-E Video https://pixabay.com/videos/human-dna-code-science-medical-5458 Music PIXABAY LICENSE CERTIFICATE This document confirms the download of an audio file pursuant to the Content License as defined in the Pixabay Terms of Service available at https://pixabay.com/service/terms Licensor Username: https://pixabay.com/users/zen_man-4257870 Licensee: Steve-Wells Audio File Title: Background Loop Chill Techno#05 Audio File URL: https://pixabay.com/music/electronic-background-loop-chill-techno-05-3511 Audio File ID: 3511 Date of download: 2023-07-13 13:17:07 UTC Pixabay GmbH c/o Lacore Rechtsanwälte LLP Berliner Freiheit 2, 10785 Berlin, Germany. Design Fiction – Provoking the Future with Gina Clifford07 Feb 202400:31:44

There are a number of different approaches, models, and frameworks to help us explore the future – or potential futures - from driver mapping to horizon scanning, scenario development to design fiction, to mention just a few. Today, we are going to focus on design fiction which can be defined as a creative approach that speculates about possible futures through the design and portrayal of products, services, or scenarios. It blends storytelling and futurism with design thinking to explore the implications of emerging technologies and social trends. But what role can design fiction have in helping us consider the future? To help address this question, I am delighted to welcome back friend of the podcast, strategic communicator and futurist Gina Clifford. Deepfakes: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly with Sylvia Gallusser & Tunu Wamai18 Jan 202400:32:33

Deepfakes are synthetic media that have been digitally manipulated, often using artificial intelligence and machine learning, to make it appear as if someone is saying or doing something they never did. To achieve this, a person's face or voice is superimposed onto another person's body or audio recording. Deepfakes – like pretty much any technology family - can be used for a variety of purposes, both good and bad. Some common uses of deepfakes include entertainment, art, education, but also fraud, reputational damage, and other criminal activity. For this podcast episode I am delighted to welcome Tunu Wamai; an Economics and Political Science graduate of Minerva University and creator of Tech Policy – The Human Perspective blog (link in the podcast details), and Global Futurist and Metaverse Strategist Sylvia Gallusser. The Evolution of the Identity Economy with Gina Clifford, Sylvia Gallusser, & Rob Tyrie08 Jan 202400:22:56

Identity economics is a branch of economics that explores how our identities influence our economic decisions. It argues that people can be motivated by a desire to maintain a consistent sense of self, which in turn means that our identities can play a role in determining our choices about work, consumption, and other economic activities. So how can generative AI – and other technologies and change drivers – impact the evolution of an identity economy across life, society, and enterprise?

Today, Global Futurist & Metaverse Strategist Sylvia Gallusser and I are joined on the podcast by strategic communicator and futurist Gina Clifford and technology innovator Rob Tyrie to explore the evolution of identity economics.

The Intelligent Age with David Smith26 Oct 202300:32:04

Deloitte’s Tony Reeves characterised the Intelligent Age as “the Age of With, where every human works with intelligent machines in every activity. It merges the digital, physical and human worlds, collaborating across the boundaries of each to improve performance and empower smarter humans to achieve more at incredible speed.”

In this episode, our questions are on the characterisation of the Intelligent Age, what it might look like in 2050, the significant technologies of the time, and how this comes together to impact the kind of work we might do in the second half of this century.

To help me consider these questions, I am delighted to welcome chief executive and a futurist at London-based Global Futures and Foresight, David Smith, to the podcast.

The Future of Media and News – The Role of Generative AI with Sylvia Gallusser 25 Oct 202300:33:56

For some years, the ongoing and accelerating development of artificial intelligence has been eye- and imagination-catching. And now we have a number of generative AI models that have burst onto the scene over the last year or so. Generative artificial intelligence - refers to the use of AI to create new content; like text, images, music, audio, and video. Generative AI works by using a machine learning model to learn the patterns and relationships in a dataset of human-created content. It then uses the learned patterns to generate new content.

But given the rapid development and real world application of these models, what could they mean for the future of media and content, and for the identity economy?

This is the first of a three-part exploration of the role of generative AI into both these areas that I am thrilled to say is in collaboration with Global Futurist & Metaverse Strategist Sylvia Gallusser. In this episode we will explore the context of AI development focusing on generative AI, then look at content creation through the lens of journalism.

In the second episode we will look to the future and to explore three scenarios of a world in 2050 where the identity economy dominates. And then in the third episode, we will invite viewers and listeners to share their perspectives on our exploration and the future of media, news, and the identity economy.

Life After Net Zero with Steve Wells04 Oct 202300:23:00

With recent controversy surrounding the Government’s apparent backing off from the pace at which the UK will achieve net zero by 2050, I wanted to take the opportunity to explore the issue. But rather than jump on the scare band-wagon, wanted to offer a carrot – if that’s not mixing too many metaphors.

While the threat of climate change-fuelled catastrophe might scare people into action, perhaps that should be considered in parallel with the benefits of achieving net zero.

So in this episode of the podcast, let’s imagine a future in 2060 in which global society has achieved net zero as planned in 2050.

The Office of the Future: 2050 and Beyond with Harriet Wiseman19 Sep 202300:35:33

Since the pandemic, remote and hybrid working have become part of the workplace planning lexicon. But with the debate about the pros and cons of working away from the office still in full flight, change is also being fuelled by increasingly sophisticated automation technologies, which in turn offers the attractive potential of significant cost savings afforded by downsizing office accommodation.

To explore the role of flexibility in establishing successful workplaces, developments in material production, and key challenges for the success of the future workplaces in the second half of this century, I am joined by Associate Director at Colliers International, Harriet Wiseman in this episode of the podcast.

Digital Twins with Alex Whittington13 Sep 202300:21:54

A "Digital Twin" is a virtual model of a process, product, or service. The pairing of the virtual and physical worlds allows analysis of data collected to predict potential issues before they even occur; preventing downtime, developing new opportunities, and even plan for the future by using simulations, for example.

To explore digital twins and their societal implications, I am joined on this episode of the podcast by Alex Whittington, a futurist from the Tata Consulting Services Future of Business team.

The Path to Technotopia or Climate Change Fuelled Dystopia with Rob Caldera06 Sep 202300:22:48

It’s not uncommon for us to consider a positive outcome in the future, or a negative one. The utopian view or the dystopian view. But the likelihood is of a future with both positive and negative elements, much like we have seen in the present and the past.

Today, we are exploring the dichotomy between advanced technology changing everything for the better and a world in chaos because of climate change. Will we harness these amazing technology advances to resolve our challenges in the second half of the 21st century and create a technotopia, and will we recover from sliding into climate change fuelled dystopia?

To consider the drivers of these contrasting futures, I am delighted to welcome Managing Principal at Future|Shift Consulting, Rob Caldera back to the podcast.

Is kindness the leadership competence of the future? with Alessandra Marazzi07 Feb 202300:15:30

Jacinda Ardern’s decision to step down as New Zealand’s Prime Minister came as a surprise to many. She became the world’s youngest female head of government when she was elected prime minister in 2017 at 37. She has led New Zealand through the Covid-19 pandemic, and a series of disasters including the terrorist attack on two mosques in Christchurch, and the White Island volcanic eruption.

Asked how she would like New Zealanders to remember her leadership, Ardern said “as someone who always tried to be kind”.

“I hope I leave New Zealanders with a belief that you can be kind, but strong, empathetic but decisive, optimistic but focused. And that you can be your own kind of leader – one who knows when it’s time to go,” Ardern said.

The prime minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, paid tribute to Ardern, saying she “has shown the world how to lead with intellect and strength … She has demonstrated that empathy and insight are powerful leadership qualities.”

Relational Systems Architect, Leadership Development & Impact Coach, and creator of Mycelium Collab Alessandra Marazzi posed the question, “What would the world look if we all wanted to be remembered, as someone who always tried to be kind?” Which in turn begs the question, “Is kindness the leadership competence of the future?”

To consider this question, I am delighted to welcome Alessandra back to the podcast.

Human Adaptation to be Always Human with Joana Lenkova19 Jan 202300:12:14

The Rise of the Machines has a bit of Terminator feel to it, but as increasing automation plays a bigger role across life, society, and business, it’s hard to ignore the potential of AI and other automation technologies taking control.

But as well as the trepidation about dystopian potential, these same technologies offer incredible opportunity to enhance humanity. The question is, what could it mean to be more human in an ever more technology enabled world? And how might we as humans need to adapt and what will remain purely human?

To explore these questions and why 2023 was a tipping point we might look back on from 2033, I am joined by Strategist and Futurist Joana Lenkova.

Broadening & Combining AI with David Wood05 Jan 202300:12:40

One of the most persistent ideas about artificial intelligence, is that there’s a clear distinction between what many commentators refer to as narrow AI and the goal of more general artificial intelligence, otherwise often referred to as artificial general intelligence (AGI). But there is evidence to suggest that a new perspective would be helpful in fostering balanced discussion on the technology’s evolution now. The progress in the development of AI with wider application begs the question; “Is 2023 about to become a turning point in the public conversation about the incredible potential of AI?”

To consider this question, I am delighted to welcome back futurist speaker, analyst, commentator, and author David Wood to the podcast.

Connected Stores with Alexandra Whittington 03 Jan 202300:08:14

To start the New Year, I am speaking to 6 futurist friends of the podcast - Alex Whittington, David Wood, Gina Clifford, Joana Lenkova, Rob Caldera, and Sylvia Gallusser to explore their thoughts on the new technologies, ideas, and developments that may emerge in 2023 that will have proven to be significant when we look back from 2033 – in 10 years’ time.

The convergence of digital technology and habits formed through the pandemic have changed how we shop. Click and collect, scan and pay, and pay-and-go – the Amazon style concept – have added choice to the options of online shopping and the brick-and-mortar store.

According to Modor Intelligence, the North American Retail Automation Market is anticipated to register a CAGR of 10.2% (2021-2026). The retail automation market in the United States is anticipated to be driven by the growing adoption of automation technologies by the major players, such as Amazon and Walmart; to cut down costs and drive efficiency and enhance the customer experience.

McKinsey say that the United Kingdom has gone further in adopting online shopping than any of its Western peers with 20% of UK consumers shop entirely or mostly online.

So what are the implications as these tech enabled options are implemented widely?

In this first episode of the New Year 2023 Mini-Series, I am joined by leading futurist Alexandra Whittington to consider this question.

2023 Developments We’ll Look Back on in 2033 - Mini-Series Introduction02 Jan 202300:02:52

We often see news items concerning the development of new technologies such as AI, machine learning, augmented and virtual reality, and the metaverse and their potential future deployment. The implications across enterprise and our private lives are often uncertain and depending on one’s point of view represent a possible journey to dystopia or utopia. The journey can be framed as a conflict as humanity versus technology, or an opportunity to achieve super abundance.

But which technologies, ideas, and developments that may emerge in 2023 will have proven to be significant when we look back from 2033 – in 10 years’ time?

This new mini-series will explore some of the ideas of six futurist friends of the podcast, in the following six episodes.

The Future of Christmas with Steve Wells and Friends17 Dec 202200:18:22

Here’s a question: How has the way you plan to spend Christmas this year, changed from 10 or 20 years ago, and how might it change in the future?

Last year, together with six futurists, we explored how Christmas and the holiday season more broadly might change in the future, and we are going to tap into their ideas again for this festive episode of the Informing Choices Mini-Pod.

The combination of social, technological, and environmental trends in particular are driving change in everyday life, society, and business. The way we celebrate traditional cultural, spiritual, and family events continues to evolve. Technology offers new ways to celebrate and reminisce about Christmases long in the past and create new traditions. And the environment and sustainability agenda more broadly shape how we use resources to help us celebrate.

Metaverse and the Future of Play with Alexandra Whittington06 Dec 202200:15:28

* Editorial problem with this episode resolved - 12th December. Apologies for any inconvenience. *

The idea of the metaverse is of an iteration of the Internet as a single, universal, and immersive virtual world that is facilitated by the use of virtual reality and augmented reality devices. Right now, it might be more accurate to describe it as a network of 3D virtual worlds focused on social connection. There are plenty of ideas about what the metaverse might be in the future; how it might evolve from gaming, a virtual workplace, a concert venue, lecture hall, or fashion store.

Today, we will focus on the metaverse and the future of play, and I am delighted to welcome back friend of the podcast, leading futurist and member of Tata Consulting Services Future of Business team, Alexandra Whittington.

21st Century Leadership with Cat Barnard04 Jul 202400:31:00
Welcome to the latest episode of the Informing Choices Mini-Pod; the last episode of our collaboration with Working the Future exploring 10 meta-trends impacting the future of work. As we navigate unprecedented changes both inside and outside the workplace, understanding what leadership looks like now, and what it might need to be in the future, is more crucial than ever. In this episode, we first tackle why 21st-century leadership is likely to be markedly different from traditional models. We then identify three drivers reshaping the landscape of leadership. Looking forward, we explore optimistic and pessimistic scenarios for how leaders might adapt to these evolving requirements by 2030. Finally, we discuss practical actions that organizations can take right now to cultivate the kind of leaders that will thrive in this new era. Whether you are currently in a leadership role, aspire to be one, or are simply interested in the forces shaping our leaders today, this episode will offer crucial insights. Cathryn Barnard, co-founding director at Working the Future, joins me in this episode.
