Yesterday, we talked about the current beneath us.
That idea still feels important to me, because if love is a real force, then it should be able to show up in real life. Not just in theory. Not just in poetry. Not only when we are feeling especially spiritual or unusually patient, which for me usually requires coffee and a cooperative morning.
If love is a force, then it takes shape.
It becomes visible.
Not always in a dramatic way. In fact, I think love often avoids drama when it can. It seems perfectly comfortable working quietly, through ordinary people, in ordinary rooms, on ordinary days.
That may be one reason we miss it.
We expect a force to look powerful.
We expect thunder, motion, impact, something impossible to ignore.
But the Love Force often appears as a person who stays when leaving would be easier. It can look like someone choosing a softer tone because the relationship matters more than the argument. It can look like a meal, a message, a ride to an appointment, a chair pulled close to someone who doesn’t want to be alone.
None of that looks like lightning.
But it changes things.
That’s what forces do.
They change direction. They create movement. They shift what would have happened if they had not entered the scene.
A harsh word is ready to land, and love catches it before it leaves the mouth.
A lonely person expects silence, and love sends a voice.
A family keeps repeating the same old wound, until one person decides they are too tired of the damage to keep handing it forward.
That is force.
Not loud, necessarily.
But real.
I think we have to train ourselves to recognize love in its working clothes.
Love does not always arrive looking polished and glowing. Sometimes it looks tired. Sometimes it has casserole dishes in its hands. Sometimes it is sitting in traffic on the way to help someone. Sometimes it is biting its tongue, taking a breath, and trying again.
Love is not less sacred because it has errands to run.
Maybe it is more sacred there.
Because that is where life happens.
We can speak beautifully about love and still miss the person in front of us. We can believe in compassion and still become impatient with the people closest to us. We can talk about healing the world while refusing to answer the text from someone who only needs five minutes of kindness.
That is not me pointing a finger.
That is me noticing how easily love can become an idea instead of a practice.
Ideas are easier to manage.
Practice interrupts us.
Practice asks us to do something with what we claim to believe.
And the Love Force, if it is real, is not content to remain in our vocabulary. It wants to move through our hands, our choices, our presence, and the space we make for others.
I like that phrase.
The space we make.
So much of love is space.
Room for someone to speak honestly.
Room for a person to change.
Room for grief to take the time it takes.
Room for joy to return without being rushed.
Room for someone’s full humanity, even when their full humanity is inconvenient to our plans.
That does not mean we accept harm or abandon wisdom. Love without discernment can become chaos. Love without boundaries can wear itself into resentment. But boundaries, when they are healthy, do not have to become a refusal to care.
They can be the shape love takes when love wants to remain honest.
That took me time to understand.
Sometimes love says yes.
Sometimes love says no.
Sometimes love steps closer, and sometimes it steps back so the relationship can breathe.
The shape changes, but the current underneath can still be love.
That matters because many of us have been taught to recognize love only when it feels warm and agreeable. But real love may arrive as truth. It may come as accountability. It may ask us to stop pretending something is fine when it is not.
There is a way to tell the truth that destroys, and there is a way to tell the truth that leaves a door open for healing.
Love tries to find that door.
It may not always find it perfectly through us. We are human. We come with moods, blind spots, sore places, and occasionally a tone of voice we regret before the sentence is even finished.
But love keeps teaching.
It keeps shaping us.
Little by little, we begin to notice the moment before the moment. That tiny space before we react. That breath where the future of the conversation is still undecided.
Love can live there.
It can change what happens next.
That is where the Love Force becomes more than a beautiful thought. It becomes a practical power in the room.
It changes the outcome of dinner.
It changes how a child remembers being corrected.
It changes whether an apology becomes possible.
It changes whether someone walks away feeling smaller or more seen.
And when I say love takes shape, I don’t mean only in kindness we offer to others.
It also takes shape in how we let ourselves be loved.
That can be harder than we admit.
Some of us know how to give care much better than we know how to receive it. We can show up for everyone else, but when someone tries to show up for us, we suddenly become very busy pretending we are fine.
Receiving love requires its own courage.
It means allowing ourselves to need.
It means trusting that we are not a burden simply because we are human.
It means letting the thread come toward us instead of always trying to be the one holding everyone else together.
Love has a shape there too.
A hand accepted.
A truth spoken.
A rest taken.
A kindness received without immediately trying to repay it.
That is not weakness.
That is participation.
Because if the Love Force is real, then we are not only channels for it. We are also held by it.
We give and receive. We carry and are carried. We become part of the movement, not as machines of endless service, but as living souls inside a living connection.
That is a more honest picture of love to me.
Not one person always pouring out while another only receives.
Not one person becoming invisible so everyone else can be comfortable.
Love moves both ways when it is healthy.
It creates dignity on both sides.
Maybe that is one of the ways we know it is love.
It does not shrink the soul.
Even when it asks sacrifice, it does not erase the person offering it.
Love enlarges.
It makes room for more life, not less.
So today, maybe we can look for the shape love is taking right now.
Not in some abstract future where we become perfectly calm and spiritually impressive.
Right here.
In the way we answer.
In the way we listen.
In the way we repair what we can.
In the way we allow someone else to care for us without making a joke to escape the tenderness of it.
The Love Force may be vast, but it is not vague.
It becomes real in the next choice.
And maybe that is the wonder of it.
Something as deep as the current beneath the universe can still show up as a cup of coffee, a gentler sentence, a moment of patience, or a hand reaching across the table.
Love takes shape.
Then it changes the shape of us.

How do we live with it?
How do we stop treating love like an occasional mood and start trusting it as the current beneath us?
That image helps me.
A current.
You may not always see it from the surface. The water can look calm, or choppy, or dark, or full of reflections that make it hard to know what is happening underneath. But beneath all of that, something is moving.
I think love can be like that.
There are seasons when we feel it clearly. The heart opens. The connection is obvious. The kindness comes naturally. We know what to do, or at least we know the next right thing.
Then there are other seasons when love feels buried. We’re tired. We’re hurt. We’re frustrated with people, with ourselves, with the world. The current is still there, but we are not feeling it as easily.
That does not mean it has disappeared.
It may simply mean we are blocked.
I know what that feels like.
There are times when I want to be loving, but I’m carrying too much noise inside. Worry gets loud. Resentment starts making speeches. Fear brings a whole slideshow and acts like it was invited.
In those moments, love may not feel like a warm glow.

The Force We Are Made Of

Today I want to step into something bigger.
Maybe stranger.
The more I sit with this idea of the Love Force, the less it feels like a metaphor to me. I know that can sound unusual, because when most people say love, they mean a feeling. Warmth. Affection. Compassion. Attachment. The tenderness we feel toward another person.
Love can include all of that.
But what if love is more than something we feel?
What if love is an actual force?
I don’t mean magic powers or glowing hands or coffee mugs floating across the room, though I wouldn’t complain if the coffee mug figured out how to come to me.
I mean force in the sense of something active.
Something that moves.
Something that connects what would otherwise remain separate.
Something that pulls life toward healing, mercy, belonging, and wholeness.
Maybe love is not only inside us.
Maybe we are inside it.
That thought changes things for me.
If love is only an emotion, then it comes and goes with mood and circumstance. It rises. It fades. It gets tired. Some days it feels strong, and other days we have to go looking for it under worry, frustration, and whatever new absurd thing has happened in the world.
But if love is a force, then our feelings may only be how we experience it. They may not be the full reality of what it is.
A person can feel the wind without being the wind.
A person can feel warmth without being the sun.
Maybe we feel love because we are touching something larger than ourselves.

I don’t mean intelligence in a cold or mechanical way. I don’t mean life has a neat little instruction sheet tucked behind the curtain somewhere, and if we could just find it, everything would make sense.
I mean something quieter than that.
The kind of knowing that seems to move through love before we fully understand it.
We started with that gentle pull that comes before we know why. We looked at the pattern that only becomes visible after time gives us a little distance. We talked about the people and places that feel like home, and yesterday we sat with the memory love leaves in us.
Today, as we finish the week, I want to turn toward the future.
That word can feel heavy.
The future.
It carries a lot of weight. Uncertainty. Change. Things we hope for. Things we dread. People we want to keep safe. Chapters we’re not ready to close. Doors we’re not sure we’re brave enough to open.
Some days the future feels less like a horizon and more like weather moving in.
But maybe love gives us another way to see it.
Maybe the future is not only something coming toward us.
Maybe it is also something love is calling us toward.
That doesn’t make the road simple. I wish it did. I’d love to believe that if we choose love sincerely enough, life will reward us with a clear path, good lighting, and maybe a decent parking spot near the entrance.
But love has never promised that everything will become easy.
Love is not a guarantee.
It is an invitation.

The way love stays in us.
The way it keeps shaping us long after the moment has passed.
Some moments are brief, but they leave something behind.
A kind word.
A hand on the shoulder.
A laugh at the right time.
A person who believed in us before we had learned how to believe in ourselves.
Those things may not look dramatic when they happen. Sometimes they pass by quietly. We may not even understand their importance until years later.
But love has a way of settling into the soul.
It becomes part of how we see.
Part of how we speak.
Part of how we treat the next person who needs what we once received.
That amazes me.
Someone can love us for a season, or even for a single moment, and that love can go on doing work in us for the rest of our lives.

Today, I want to talk about recognition.
Not the kind where you remember someone’s name after staring at them awkwardly for six seconds in the grocery store.
I mean the deeper kind.
The feeling that something or someone belongs to you before you can explain why.
A person you’ve just met feels strangely familiar.
A place you’ve never been seems to welcome you.
A conversation opens, and within minutes, you’re speaking more honestly than you expected.
It doesn’t happen all the time.
If it did, we’d probably stop trusting it. But when it does happen, it can feel like the heart has noticed something before the mind has finished checking the guest list.
There are people who arrive in our lives that way.
At first, they may seem ordinary. A coworker. A neighbor. Someone online. A friend of a friend. But something about them feels easy in a way that surprises us.
You don’t have to perform quite as much.
You don’t have to explain every corner of yourself.
They understand the joke.
They hear the pause.
They make room for your odd little habits, your history, your tenderness, your weirdness, and they don’t make you feel strange for carrying any of it.
That kind of recognition is a gift.

Today, I want to stay in that same neighborhood, but step back a little.
Because sometimes the mystery of love is not found in one moment.
It’s found in the way moments begin to connect.
You look back over a season of your life, and things that seemed random at the time start to look different. A conversation you almost didn’t have. A person you met by accident. A disappointment that redirected you. A small decision that opened a door you didn’t even know was there.
At the time, it may have felt ordinary.
Later, it feels like part of a pattern.
That’s what I want to talk about today.
The pattern beneath the pattern.
I don’t mean this in a rigid way. I’m not saying every little thing is secretly coded with a message. I don’t think love requires us to become detectives with a corkboard, red string, and a suspicious number of pushpins.
Life is messy.
Some things happen because people are people. Some things happen because the world is unpredictable. Some things happen because we make choices, and other people make choices, and all of those choices bump into each other in ways nobody could fully control.
Still, I think there are times when love creates connections we only recognize later.
Not because everything was planned in a neat little row.
Because love is always working with what is available.

This week, I want to explore something a little harder to name.
We’ve talked about love as kindness. Love as compassion. Love as healing. Love as the thread that connects us. Last week, we spent time with the lighter side of it too, the laughter, the joy, the little winks that help us keep going.
But there’s another side of love that fascinates me.
It’s quieter.
It often arrives before we have language for it.
It shows up as a pull, a nudge, a strange little knowing in the chest. We sense something before we can explain it. We care before we’ve made a decision to care. We move toward someone or something, and only later do we understand why.
That’s where I want to begin this week.
Before we know why.
I think most of us have had moments like that.
You feel drawn to check on someone, and you don’t have a clear reason. Nothing dramatic happened. Nobody sent a warning flare. You just feel that small tug inside, so you reach out.
Then maybe they say, “I needed that today.”
Or maybe they don’t say much at all, but you can hear something in their voice that tells you the timing mattered.
I don’t know exactly what to call that.
Instinct, maybe.
Intuition.
Attention.
The quiet intelligence of the heart.
I’m careful with words like that because I don’t want to make everything sound mystical just for the sake of it. Sometimes we notice more than we realize. A tone changes. A pattern shifts. A person goes quieter than usual. Our minds may not put the clues together consciously, but something in us hears the difference.

But I also don’t want love to become so heavy in our hands that we forget it can dance.
Because love is not only present when we are serious.
Love is there in the laugh that catches us off guard.
It’s there in the little joy that sneaks into an ordinary day.
It’s there in the familiar person who understands our weirdness without needing us to translate it.
It’s there in those moments when life seems to wink at us, as if the universe still has a sense of timing and a little mischief tucked in its pocket.
So as we finish this week, I want to talk about joy.
Not the kind that ignores suffering.
Not the kind that pretends everything is fine.
I mean the kind of joy that keeps the thread alive when the world gets tangled.
That kind matters more than we sometimes admit.
There is a version of seriousness that can slowly turn into dryness. We can become so focused on what is wrong, what is urgent, what is broken, and what needs to be repaired that we start to lose the very thing we’re trying to protect.
We want a kinder world, but our own spirits become brittle.
We want more love, but we forget to laugh with the people beside us.
We want healing, but we stop noticing the small beautiful things that help us keep going long enough to heal.

When Love Winks at Us

This week, we’ve been letting the Love Force smile a little.
We talked about humor, those little joys that sneak into the day, and the people who make life less weird just by being in it.
Today, I want to talk about something I don’t completely understand, which means it’s probably worth talking about.
I want to talk about those moments when life seems to wink at us.
You know the kind I mean.
You think about someone you haven’t heard from in a while, and then your phone lights up with their name.
You’re having a rough day, and some song comes on that feels almost too perfectly timed.
You’re worried about something, not even saying it out loud, and then a stranger says one sentence in passing that lands right where you needed it.
Now, I’m not here to prove anything.
I don’t have charts.
I don’t have a laboratory.
And after the Professor Potts videos I’ve made, I’m not sure anyone should trust me near a laboratory anyway.
But I do believe there are moments in life that feel like more than coincidence, even if coincidence is the only word we have handy.
Not every odd little moment is a message from the universe. Sometimes a bird is just a bird. Sometimes the song on the radio is just the song on the radio. Sometimes the phone rings because people own phones and occasionally remember how to use them.
Still, I think we lose something when we flatten every beautiful surprise into nothing.
There’s a kind of wonder that doesn’t require us to exaggerate.
We can notice the timing.
We can smile at the strangeness.

It may feel like a choice to pause before I speak.
It may feel like admitting I’m wrong.
It may feel like refusing to turn another person into a cartoon version of themselves just because I’m angry.
That is not glamorous.
But it is real.
Maybe trusting the current of love does not mean we always feel peaceful. Maybe it means we learn how to return to love when something in us has drifted away from it.
Return is a powerful word.
It suggests we are not creating love from nothing. We are coming back to something that was already true.
Coming back to tenderness after fear has made us hard.
Coming back to mercy after resentment has tried to take over the room.
Coming back to connection after isolation has convinced us that nobody understands.
I think much of the spiritual life, and maybe much of the human life, is learning how to return.
Not once.
Again and again.
There is no shame in that. We are human. We wander. We get defensive. We speak too quickly. We protect old wounds in ways that accidentally create new ones.
But the Love Force keeps inviting us back.
Not with a wagging finger.
More like a hand extended.
“Come back to what is true.”
That may be the quiet work of love in us.
It keeps reminding us that separation is not the deepest truth, even when separation feels convincing.
When we are afraid, we tend to shrink the world down to ourselves. My pain. My safety. My argument. My need to be right. My fear of being hurt again.
Love does not erase the self, but it opens the door and lets others matter too.
That changes the atmosphere inside us.
Suddenly the person in front of us is not just an obstacle, a threat, or a problem to solve. They are a life. A story. A heart carrying things we may never fully know.
That does not mean we excuse harm.
It does not mean boundaries disappear.
Real love is not the same as letting people walk through the house with muddy boots and call it intimacy.
Love has wisdom.
But even when love says no, it does not have to become cruel.
That is one way I recognize the current.
Cruelty shrinks me.
Love steadies me.
Cruelty may feel powerful for a moment, but afterward something in the soul feels smaller. Love may ask more courage, but it leaves more room to breathe.
So maybe the practice is simple, even if it is not easy.
When we feel ourselves tightening, we pause.
When we feel ourselves dehumanizing someone, we remember they are more than the worst thing we know about them.
When we feel despair trying to close every window, we look for one small act of care that is still possible.
Not because one act fixes everything.
Because one act can put us back in the current.
A message.
A softer answer.
A meal.
An apology.
A moment of attention when someone expected to be ignored.
Small things matter because love knows how to move through them.
The current does not ask us to become heroic every morning before breakfast. Thank goodness, because most mornings I’m still negotiating with coffee.
It asks us to become available.
That word keeps returning to me.
Available.
Open enough to be moved.
Honest enough to notice when we are blocked.
Humble enough to return when we drift.
Maybe that is how we live with the Love Force.
We stop demanding that love always arrive as a feeling. We begin to recognize it as a direction.
Toward connection.
Toward healing.
Toward mercy.
Toward the kind of truth that does not need to destroy in order to be honest.
And when we lose our way, as all of us do, we listen for the current beneath the noise.
It is still moving.
It is still calling.
It is still trying to carry us back to ourselves, back to one another, back to the source of everything that makes life worth living.

I can’t prove that with a chart. I can’t measure love in official units of tenderness per square inch.
But I do think we can look at what love does.
It connects people. It draws us out of isolation. It makes another person’s pain matter to us. It interrupts cruelty in us before cruelty gets too comfortable. It gives ordinary people the courage to sacrifice time, pride, comfort, sleep, and sometimes safety for the sake of someone else.
That is not nothing.
That is power.
And maybe we are so used to it that we forget how astonishing it is.
There is something in us that refuses to remain sealed off inside the self.
We can see another human being suffer, and suddenly their pain crosses the border into our own concern. We hold a child, comfort a friend, forgive someone, or sit beside a person who is hurting, and somehow we feel more real in those moments.
Why is that?
Why do we become more ourselves when we move toward love?
That question stays with me.
Maybe love is not something added to us.
Maybe love is what we are underneath everything else.
Maybe fear, ego, resentment, and cruelty are distortions. Maybe they are what happens when the thread gets tangled, when pain teaches us to defend ourselves so completely that we forget our deeper nature.
I’m not saying people are naturally perfect.
Spend ten minutes online and humanity will offer several helpful corrections to that idea.
But I do wonder if, beneath all the damage, there is something in us that knows we belong to love.
Not as a nice thought.
As our source.
As our truest identity.
That would explain why hatred has to keep feeding itself. It needs enemies. It needs repetition. It needs stories that make other people smaller. It has to rehearse itself, because some deeper part of us knows it is not home.
Love feels different.
Even when love is hard, something in it feels aligned with life.
A hard truth spoken with love may hurt, but it can heal.
A boundary set with love may disappoint someone, but it can still protect dignity.
An apology can feel frightening, but once it is offered honestly, the soul breathes differently.
Love is not always easy.
But it often feels true.
That matters.
I think this is why the image of threads means so much to me. We are not isolated pieces. We are related. We affect one another. What happens in one life moves into families, friendships, communities, and generations.
Kindness travels that way.
So does harm.
The thread carries what we place on it.
If love were only a feeling inside me, it would end at the edge of my skin. Real love never stays contained that neatly.
It becomes action.
It changes how we speak.
It changes what we notice.
It changes what we refuse to ignore.
When I love, I am still me, but I am no longer only me.
Your life matters inside mine.
Maybe that is one sign that love is a force. It expands the boundaries of the self.
And maybe when love expands us, it is not making us less ourselves. Maybe it is helping us remember what the self was always meant to be.
Connected.
Responsive.
Alive to the sacredness of others.
If the Love Force is real, then every act of love may be more than personal goodness. It may be participation in the deepest movement of life.
When we comfort someone, we are not just being polite.
When we protect someone vulnerable, we are not just doing a good deed.
When we forgive honestly, we are not just being nice.
We are letting the deeper current move through us.
Maybe that is why love can feel strong even when we feel weak.
A tired person can still offer tenderness. A grieving person can still reach for someone else. A wounded person can still become a place of safety.
Where does that come from?
Maybe love is not only generated by us.
Maybe it flows through us.
And if that is true, the goal is not to manufacture love out of sheer willpower. Maybe the goal is to become less blocked.
Less defended.
Less convinced that separation is the truth.
That does not mean we lose boundaries. Real love does not demand self-destruction. A river still needs banks if it is going to carry water anywhere useful.
Healthy boundaries are not walls against love.
They are channels for it.
They help love move honestly.
They keep compassion from turning into exhaustion.
They keep giving from becoming resentment.
That is part of learning to live as love.
Not as a slogan.
As a practice.
A loving life is made in ordinary moments. It shows up in the tone we use when we are irritated, in the patience we offer when someone needs more time, in the choice to listen instead of preparing our defense.
The Love Force does not seem bothered by smallness.
It enters through whatever opening it can find.
A text that says, “I’m thinking about you.” A hand held. A quiet apology. A laugh shared at the right time. A cup of coffee placed in front of someone who needed care more than caffeine.
Tiny things, maybe.
But tiny openings can let in a great deal of light.
And if love is who we really are, then those moments are a kind of remembering.
We remember ourselves when we love.
We remember what we are made for.
We remember that life is not meant to be lived as a locked room.
Cruelty feels like exile to me.
It may give a person a temporary sense of power, but it shrinks the soul. It cuts threads and calls the loneliness strength.
Love does the opposite.
Love enlarges.
It brings us back into relationship with each other, with reality, with God if that is the language we use, with the deep current beneath everything.
I know people may hear this in different ways. Some may hear it spiritually. Some may hear it poetically. Some may hear it as a way of describing human connection.
That’s okay.
I’m less interested in arguing over the label than I am in noticing the movement.
Because whatever we call it, love keeps doing something remarkable.
It pulls us out of isolation.
It asks us to become more whole.
It whispers that we belong to one another.
Maybe that whisper is the truth beneath everything.
Maybe the Love Force is not far away.
Maybe it is the life within life.
Maybe it is what we touch when we are kind, what we resist when we are cruel, what we long for when we are lonely, and what we recognize when someone finally sees us clearly.
So today, I want to leave us with this thought.
What if becoming more loving is not about becoming something artificial or saintly or impossible?
What if it is about becoming more real?
Less covered over.
Less afraid.
Less convinced that separation is the truth.
What if love is not merely what we do at our best?
What if love is the deepest part of who we are?
That possibility is enough to make me pause.
It is enough to make me want to live as though every act of kindness, every moment of mercy, every refusal to dehumanize another person is not just a good choice, but a return.
A return to the thread.
A return to the source.
A return to what we were all along.

That phrase has stayed with me.
Available to what love is still creating.
Because it is very easy, after enough years and enough losses, to start thinking the most meaningful parts of life are behind us. We don’t always say that out loud. Sometimes we just stop expecting anything new to reach us.
We lower our hopes in quiet ways.
A door closes, and we don’t look for another one.
A dream fades, and we tell ourselves it probably wasn’t practical anyway.
Something hurts, and we decide that wanting less might keep us safer.
I understand that.
Life can wear people down. Grief can make tomorrow feel like an empty room. Disappointment can start sounding like wisdom if it speaks confidently enough.
Fear is very good at pretending to be practical.
It says, “Don’t open that door. Don’t hope too much. Don’t let anything matter enough to hurt you again.”
After enough pain, that can sound reasonable.
But love keeps knocking.
Not pounding. Not forcing its way in. More often, it returns as a quiet stirring we thought had gone away.
A little curiosity comes back.
A name stays on our mind.
Someone invites us into something, and to our own surprise, we want to say yes.
A cause begins to matter.
A creative idea keeps tapping on the window.
Someone else’s suffering touches us in a place that refuses to go numb.
That may be one way love calls us forward.
It doesn’t always call us toward comfort.
Often, it calls us toward usefulness.
Toward connection.
Toward healing we can help with, even in some small way.
And I think that call can come at any age.
Love does not retire from a human life.
Our roles change. Our energy changes. Our bodies change. The way we contribute may look different than it once did. But the thread does not disappear because the chapter turns.
There is still kindness to give.
There is still wisdom to share.
There is still some person, somewhere, who may need the exact tenderness life has taught us how to carry.
That is one of the things I find hopeful.
The parts of our lives we would never have chosen may still become part of how we love someone else.
I want to say that carefully.
Pain is not good just because something good can come afterward. Loss does not become beautiful because it teaches us something. I don’t believe love sends suffering as a lesson.
But I do believe love can enter the aftermath.
It can take what we carry and ask, “Can this become mercy now?”
That question can change a future.
Old sorrow does not have to become bitterness. Experience does not have to harden into a wall. Memory does not have to become a place where we simply sit and ache.
In the hands of love, even what has hurt us can become a deeper tenderness for someone still standing in the dark.
That does not make the hurt okay.
It means hurt does not get the final word.
The future is shaped by people who have every reason to become cruel and choose not to.
That choice may not look dramatic from the outside. It may happen at a kitchen table, during a difficult phone call, beside a hospital bed, or in a tense conversation where one person could wound the other and decides to take a breath instead.
Those are small places only if we misunderstand what changes the world.
A family can begin to heal because one person stops handing down the wound they inherited.
A friendship can survive because someone reaches across the silence before pride turns it into a wall.
A community can change when enough people decide that winning is not the same thing as repair.
Love creates futures in ordinary rooms.
That may be why we miss it.
We expect transformation to arrive with ceremony, but often it begins with restraint, apology, patience, or one honest sentence said without trying to destroy anybody.
Heaven help us, that is powerful.
A future worth living in will not be made only by policies, inventions, and speeches. Those things matter. Of course they do. But underneath them there has to be a human willingness to see one another as real.
Without that, even progress can become cold.
I don’t want a world that moves faster while caring less.
I don’t want us to become so impressed with what we can build that we forget to ask whether it helps people become more human.
The Love Force keeps asking that question.
What are we becoming?
That question does not wait for some grand stage. It comes to us in ordinary life, where we are always being shaped. A little more open, or a little more guarded. A little more honest, or a little more defended. A little more willing to offer mercy, or a little more convinced that mercy should only be given to people who have earned it.
And there we are, day by day, becoming something.
That sounds serious because it is.
But it is also hopeful.
Because becoming means the story is not finished.
We are not trapped forever in who we were yesterday.
The future is not only out there somewhere, waiting on a calendar. It begins in the spirit we bring into the next moment.
I think about the quiet love happening in the world right now, mostly unnoticed except by the people touched by it. There are rooms where someone is sitting beside a bed because love refuses to leave. There are meals being carried across porches, children being taught with patience, phone calls being made by people who are scared but willing. Somewhere, a person is choosing a better path for one more day. Somewhere else, an old hatred is finally losing its grip because somebody is tired of letting it steer.
Most of that will never trend.
It may never be written down.
But it is part of the future love is creating.
Quietly. Faithfully. Thread by thread.
Maybe that is why we cannot afford despair.
I don’t say that casually.
Despair can feel honest when the world is painful. Sometimes hope sounds almost offensive when people are suffering. I understand that. There are days when optimism feels too shiny for the room we’re standing in.
But love does not ask us to deny reality.
It asks us not to surrender the future to the worst parts of reality.
There is a difference.
We can tell the truth and still plant something.
We can grieve and still answer the call.
We can be tired and still choose one small act of care.
Some days, that may be all we have.
One small act.
One message.
One softer answer.
One refusal to pass the wound forward.
One moment when we decide that fear does not get to write the whole story.
That may not feel like much.
But threads rarely do when you’re only holding one of them.
You don’t see the whole tapestry from where you stand. You see what has been placed in your hands. A relationship. A responsibility. A chance to be kind. A place where your presence can make the room less cold.
Maybe that is enough.
Maybe we honor the future by honoring the thread we have today.
As we close this week, that is what I want to carry with me.
Love has been behind us, leaving memory. It has been beneath us, weaving meaning through ordinary days. It has been beside us, helping us recognize home.
And I believe love is ahead of us too.
Not as a threat.
Not as a demand.
More like a porch light in the distance.

I think the soul gets tired of translating itself.
We spend so much of life adjusting. We learn how to speak in certain rooms. We learn what parts of ourselves to soften, hide, explain, or defend. We figure out who can handle our full laugh, our full grief, our full honesty.
Then, once in a while, someone comes along and the guard drops a little.
Not because we decided to be careless.
Because something in us says, “This feels safe.”
That word matters.
Safe.
Real home is not just a location. It is a quality of presence.
Home is where you can breathe.
Home is where you are not constantly bracing.
Home is where your heart does not have to stand at attention.
That can happen with people, and it can happen with places too.
Maybe there’s a town, a porch, a room, a church, a theater, a trail, a kitchen, a studio, a certain chair by a certain window, and the first time you were there, something in you settled.
You may not have known why.
You may still not know why.
But the place seemed to say, “You can put some of the weight down here.”
I think love speaks that language.
It gives us spaces where we can become less defended.
Not careless.
Not naïve.
Just open enough to remember who we are.
And maybe that is part of what the heart recognizes when it recognizes home.
It recognizes where love has room to move.
Sometimes we don’t notice how tense we’ve been until we find ourselves with someone who lets us relax.
We don’t notice how lonely we’ve felt until one conversation makes us feel accompanied.
We don’t notice how long we’ve been holding our breath until a place, a person, or a moment allows us to exhale.
That exhale is sacred.
It’s easy to overlook, because it doesn’t make much noise. But I think some of the most meaningful love in a life feels like that.
An exhale.
A soft landing.
A chair pulled out at the table.
A face that doesn’t require armor.
When the heart recognizes home, it is not always dramatic.
Sometimes it’s just a quiet thought.
“Oh. There you are.”
Or maybe, “I didn’t know I needed this.”
Or even, “I think I can be myself here.”
That can change a person.
We should never underestimate what it means to be a safe place for someone else.
Not a perfect place.
No one can be that.
But a safe place.
A person who listens without immediately correcting.
A person who can laugh with you without laughing at you.
A person who can hold your story without trying to use it against you later.
A person who helps your nervous system remember peace.
That is love in one of its gentlest forms.
And it may be rarer than it should be.
The world often rewards sharpness. It rewards speed, certainty, branding, performance, and the ability to look like you have it all figured out.
But the heart is not fooled by performance for very long.
The heart is looking for something else.
It is looking for warmth.
It is looking for truth.
It is looking for places where love is not just talked about, but felt.
Maybe that is why we recognize certain people before we understand them. Love has a kind of scent to it. Not literally, though I suppose if love smelled like fresh coffee and cinnamon rolls, I wouldn’t complain.
But there is a quality.
You feel it in the way someone treats the waiter.
You hear it in the patience they give to a child.
You notice it in how they speak about people who cannot help them.
The heart pays attention to those things.
It recognizes the atmosphere love creates.
And when we encounter that atmosphere, something in us leans closer.
That doesn’t mean every familiar feeling should be followed without wisdom. We still need discernment. Some things feel familiar because they are healthy. Others feel familiar because they repeat old patterns we haven’t healed yet.
That’s worth saying.
The heart is wise, but wounds can be loud.
So love asks us to listen deeply, not impulsively.
A true sense of home does not require us to shrink.
It does not ask us to betray ourselves.
It does not feed on fear, control, or confusion.
A true home makes us more whole.
It helps us become more honest.
It gives us courage to be gentle.
That is how we begin to know the difference.
Love’s familiarity enlarges us.
It doesn’t trap us.
So today, maybe we can pay attention to the places and people who help us become more ourselves.
Who makes you breathe easier?
Who helps you feel less alone in your own life?
Where do you feel invited back into the best part of yourself?
Those are not small questions.
They may point toward the threads that are quietly holding you.
And maybe they also ask something of us.
Because if we know what it feels like to find a safe place, then we can become one.
We can make our presence less harsh.
We can let people exhale around us.
We can stop making everyone prove they deserve tenderness before we offer it.
That does not mean we abandon boundaries.
Boundaries are part of safety too.
But within those boundaries, we can choose warmth. We can choose patience. We can choose to be the kind of person whose love feels like a porch light left on.

Just enough light to say, “You’re welcome here.”
Maybe the heart recognizes home because home is where love has learned to keep the light on.
And when we find that, we should be grateful.

That’s one of the reasons the image of threads matters so much to me.
A single thread can look fragile. Easy to miss. Almost nothing by itself.
But when threads cross, loop, hold, and gather, something begins to form.
A relationship.
A memory.
A calling.
A community.
A life.
Most of the time, we don’t see the weaving while it’s happening. We’re too close to it. We see the errand, the conversation, the inconvenience, the delay, the wrong turn, the person standing in front of us at that one particular moment.
We see the pieces.
Meaning often arrives later.
You run into someone, and it seems like nothing. Then months pass, maybe years, and you realize that meeting changed the shape of your life.
You take a job you weren’t sure about, and it leads to friendships you couldn’t have imagined.
You go through something painful, and while you would never choose it, it gives you compassion for someone else who later needs exactly the kind of understanding you now carry.
That last one is delicate.
I want to be careful with it.
Pain is not beautiful just because we learn from it.
Suffering does not become good because something meaningful can grow afterward.
I don’t believe love sends harm in order to teach us a lesson. That kind of thinking can become cruel very quickly.
But I do believe love can work inside the aftermath.
Love can take broken pieces and, without pretending they were never broken, begin to make something useful out of them.
Sometimes that is the hidden pattern.
Not that everything bad was meant to happen.
But that nothing, not even pain, is beyond love’s ability to touch.
That matters.
Because all of us carry things we did not choose.
Losses.
Mistakes.
Old wounds.
Wrong turns.
Seasons when we did the best we could with the understanding we had, and looking back, we wish we had known more.
The Love Force does not erase all of that.
It does something quieter and more patient.
It starts weaving again.
A person who was hurt becomes gentler with someone else’s hurt.
A person who was lonely recognizes loneliness in another face.
A person who was forgiven learns how to offer mercy instead of keeping score.
That is not a simple pattern.
It is not clean.
It is not the kind of thing you can put on a bumper sticker without losing most of the truth.
But it is real.
Love keeps making new meaning possible.
I think about how often we misunderstand our own lives while we’re living them.
We think something is an interruption, and later it becomes the thing that mattered.
We think a chapter has ended, and later we see it was preparing us for a different kind of beginning.
We think someone is only passing through, and later we discover they left a thread tied to our heart.
That’s the strange thing about love.
It doesn’t always announce its importance when it arrives.
Sometimes it comes disguised as an ordinary Tuesday.
That may be why attention is so important.
If we only value the obvious moments, we may miss the quiet ones that are actually carrying the story forward.
Not every meaningful thing enters with drama.
Some of the most important turns in a life happen gently.
A friend says, “You should try this.”
A child asks a question that stays with you.
Someone tells you a story, and something inside you wakes up.
You hear a sentence that bothers you in the best way, because you know it’s true and you aren’t ready to admit it yet.
Love can be like that.
It moves under the surface.
It does not always push.
Sometimes it rearranges us by invitation.
And when we say yes, even in a small way, the pattern changes.
That can feel frightening because we rarely know what a yes will become.
A yes to kindness may become a friendship.
A yes to honesty may become healing.
A yes to courage may become a new life you couldn’t picture from where you were standing.
The mind wants certainty before it moves.
Love often gives us enough light for one step.
Then another.
Then, somewhere down the road, we turn around and see the path.
I think that is how the pattern beneath the pattern often reveals itself.
Not ahead of us.
Behind us.
We see it in hindsight.
And even then, not perfectly.
We don’t get the whole design. We get glimpses. We see places where something held when we thought everything was coming apart. We see names and moments that seem to glow a little brighter because they became part of who we are.
This is why memory can be sacred.
Memory lets us trace the thread.
Not to control the past.
Not to rewrite it into something easier.
But to recognize where love was present.
Sometimes love was in the person who stayed.
Sometimes it was in the door that opened.
Sometimes it was in the strength that rose inside us when no one else saw it.
Sometimes it was in the stranger who treated us with kindness for five minutes and never knew those five minutes mattered.
Most of us are part of patterns we never fully see.
That humbles me.
You may have said something kind years ago, then forgotten it completely. But another person carried it. It helped them. It changed the way they felt about themselves. Maybe it even gave them courage at a moment when courage was hard to find.
You may be woven into someone’s life in ways you will never be told.
That is both beautiful and a little overwhelming.
It means our small actions matter.
The tone we use matters.
The patience we offer matters.
The mercy we choose when we could have chosen sharpness matters.
We are always touching the pattern.
Not perfectly.
Nobody does that perfectly.
But more often than we realize.
There are days when love may look like nothing more than leaving someone less wounded than we found them. That sounds small until you think about what a different world this would be if more people lived that way.
Leave the room a little warmer.
Leave the conversation a little safer.
Leave the person with a little more dignity than fear would have allowed.
That is love making a pattern.
And if enough of us keep doing that, the pattern changes around us.
We may not see the whole design in our lifetime. We may only see a few threads near our hands. But that doesn’t make the work meaningless.
The thread you hold is connected to more than you know.
That’s the part I keep coming back to.
We are not isolated fragments bumping around in the dark.
We belong to one another in ways that are deeper than convenience and broader than agreement.
A kindness here can become strength there.
A forgiveness now can stop an old wound from traveling forward.
A moment of courage in one life can give someone else permission to be brave in theirs.
Love moves through connection.
Sometimes visibly.
Often quietly.
But it moves.
And because it moves, the pattern is never finished.
That gives me hope.
Not cheap hope.
Not the kind that says everything will work out exactly the way we want.
I mean the kind of hope that says love is still able to work with this.
This moment.
This mistake.
This grief.
This ordinary day.
This small beginning.
Love is not helpless in the face of disorder.
It can enter the tangled places and begin again.
That may be the hidden intelligence of love.
It knows how to weave with threads we thought were useless.
It knows how to connect moments that seemed unrelated.
It knows how to take a kindness offered in one place and let it echo somewhere else.
We may not see all of it.
But we can participate in it.
That’s the invitation.
Today, we may not understand the larger pattern. We may not know where a conversation will lead, or why a certain person is on our mind, or what meaning a small act of care might carry into the future.
We don’t have to know all of that.
We can still choose love in the piece of the pattern we can see.
We can listen.
We can reach out.
We can speak gently.
We can make room.
We can notice the thread in our hand and treat it like it matters.
Because it does.
The ordinary moment in front of us may be more connected than it appears.
The kindness we offer may travel farther than we will ever know.
The person beside us may become part of a story that is still being woven.
And somewhere beneath the surface, love may be making a pattern we are not yet able to see.
Not perfect.
Not simple.
Not free from sorrow.
But alive.
Connected.
Still becoming.
That is enough reason to stay open.
Enough reason to keep loving.
Enough reason to trust that even now, even here, the thread is moving.

Love pays attention even when the conscious mind is busy making grocery lists and wondering why the printer is making that noise again.
Love notices.
It gathers tiny signals.
It remembers what someone sounds like when they’re okay, and what they sound like when they’re trying to sound okay.
That kind of knowing doesn’t always announce itself clearly. It can feel more like a whisper than a thought.
“Check on them.”
“Slow down.”
“Listen a little longer.”
“Don’t rush past this.”
And the mind, because the mind likes to be in charge, may ask, “Why?”
Sometimes the honest answer is, “I don’t know yet.”
That answer can be uncomfortable.
We like reasons.
We like proof.
We like to know the beginning, middle, and end before we act. At least, I often do. I like enough information to feel like I’m not just wandering around emotionally with a flashlight and a half-eaten sandwich.
But love doesn’t always wait for the full report.
Sometimes love moves first.
The explanation comes later, if it comes at all.
That doesn’t mean we should trust every impulse that crosses our minds. Fear has impulses too. Ego has impulses. Old wounds are very good at disguising themselves as wisdom.
So I’m not saying every sudden feeling is sacred guidance.
I’m saying there are moments when love pulls us toward care before certainty has arrived.
And maybe part of becoming more loving is learning the difference.
Fear usually tightens us.
Love tends to open us.
Fear says, “Protect yourself from being inconvenienced.”
Love says, “Pay attention. Someone may need tenderness here.”
Fear wants control.
Love makes room.
That doesn’t mean love always feels easy. Sometimes the loving thing is difficult. Sometimes it asks us to speak, or apologize, or stay present when we would rather escape into distraction. But even then, there’s usually a quality to it that feels different from panic. It may be firm, but it isn’t frantic. It may ask courage of us, but it doesn’t usually need cruelty to carry it out.
The quiet pull of love has a gentleness to it.
Not weakness.
Gentleness.
Those are not the same thing.
A gentle nudge can change the direction of a whole life.
Think about the people who became important to you before you understood they would be important.
At first, they were just someone you met.
A coworker.
A neighbor.
A friend of a friend.
A person standing in the same room at the right time.
You didn’t know yet. You couldn’t have known. But something in you leaned toward them.
Maybe the first conversation was nothing special to anyone else. A few words. A shared laugh. A small kindness. One of those ordinary moments that doesn’t know it’s becoming part of a story.
Then time passes.
The thread strengthens.
One day you look back and realize that a whole piece of your life began with something so small you almost missed it.
That amazes me.
We live inside stories that are being woven before we know their shape.
Love often begins as a faint thread.
Only later do we see what it was connecting.
That’s true in relationships, but it’s also true in callings.
Sometimes we’re drawn toward something, and we can’t explain why it matters so much.
A cause.
A creative project.
A place.
A community.
A way of helping.
At first, it may look like curiosity. Then it becomes attention. Then concern. Then commitment. Somewhere along the way, we realize love has been leading us.
I think about that with this podcast.
When I first began following these threads, I didn’t have the whole map. I still don’t. I just knew love mattered, and not in a vague, greeting-card way.
It mattered as a force.
It mattered as a way of seeing.
It mattered as the thing underneath everything worth saving.
And the more I followed that pull, the more the path revealed itself.
Not all at once.
Never all at once.
Just enough for the next step.
That may be how love often works.
It doesn’t always hand us a five-year plan with color-coded tabs.
Sometimes it gives us one honest sentence.
One conversation.
One small act of courage.
One person we cannot ignore.
Then we follow, and something opens.
I wonder how many good things in the world began that way.
Not with certainty.
Not with a grand vision.
Just with someone feeling a tug toward kindness and choosing not to dismiss it.
A meal taken to a neighbor.
A call made at the right time.
A teacher who noticed the child in the back of the room.
A stranger who stopped instead of walking past.
A friend who said, “Tell me what’s really going on.”
There may have been no dramatic music.
No sign in the sky.
No clear reason at the start.
Just love, moving before the mind had finished building its case.
And we need that.
Because if we wait until care is perfectly convenient, perfectly logical, and perfectly explained, we may miss the moment when care was needed most.
The heart often recognizes urgency before the calendar does.
It knows when someone needs a little more patience.
It knows when a room has gone too cold.
It knows when the joke should stop, when the silence should be honored, when the hand should be offered, when the message should be sent.
Again, not perfectly.
We’re human.
We misread things sometimes. We overthink other times. We get it wrong. Then, with a little humility, we learn.
But I don’t want us to become so afraid of being wrong that we stop listening altogether.
A loving life requires attention.
And attention is not only intellectual.
It is emotional.
Relational.
Spiritual, if you want to use that word.
It is the part of us that feels the thread before we can see it.
There is wisdom in that.
Quiet wisdom, maybe.
But quiet does not mean unimportant.
Some of the most important things in life arrive quietly.
A change in someone’s face.
A softening in your own heart.
A sense that it is time to forgive.
A sudden awareness that you have been holding on to something that is no longer holding you.
Love may not shout in those moments.
It may simply wait beside you until you are ready to notice.
And when you do, you may not fully understand it.
That’s okay.
Understanding is valuable, but it is not always the first step.
Sometimes the first step is trust.
Not blind trust.
Not reckless trust.
Just enough trust to respond to the tug of love when it asks something gentle and good of us.
Send the message.
Offer the kindness.
Ask the real question.
Sit with the person a little longer.
Let the small concern become action before it becomes regret.
There are few aches more haunting than realizing we ignored a loving nudge because we were too busy, too distracted, or too determined to be practical.
I’m not saying that to make us feel guilty.
Guilt is not the point.
The invitation is to become more available.
Available to the quiet pull.
Available to the person in front of us.
Available to the possibility that love may know something before our minds have caught up.
Maybe that’s part of what it means to live with an open heart.
Not a gullible heart.
Not a heart that believes every feeling is a command.
An open heart is not foolish.
It is awake.
It is listening.
It is willing to be interrupted by compassion.
That last part may be the hardest.
Love interrupts us.
It interrupts our schedules, our assumptions, our neat little plans for how the day was supposed to go.
And sometimes, that interruption becomes the most important part of the day.
The conversation you didn’t plan.
The kindness you almost postponed.
The moment of honesty that slipped through because you stayed present long enough to hear it.
Those are the places where the thread often becomes visible.
Not because we figured everything out.
Because we responded.
So as we begin this week, maybe we can practice listening for that quiet pull.
Notice what opens your heart.
Notice who comes to mind.
Notice where compassion keeps returning, even when you try to set it aside.
You don’t have to understand everything immediately.
You don’t have to turn every feeling into a mission.
Just pay attention.
Love may be whispering before you know why.
And if the whisper leads you toward kindness, patience, courage, or care, maybe it’s worth taking one step in that direction.
Because some of the most meaningful threads in our lives begin before we can name them.
A person.
A calling.
A healing.
A future we could not yet imagine.
Love saw the beginning before we did.
And somehow, quietly, it started pulling us toward it.

I think that’s why some of the most loving people I’ve known have also had a spark in them. Not always loud. Not always silly. Some of them were quiet people with a dry little joke that arrived at exactly the right moment. Some had a laugh you could recognize from another room. Some had a way of making even a hard day feel a little less harsh.
They weren’t avoiding life.
They had simply found a way to let light in.
That’s a gift.
We need people like that.
We need the ones who bring a little warmth into the room. The ones who remember a funny story when everyone is taking themselves too seriously. The ones who can sit with grief and still, somehow, make you smile without making the grief feel disrespected.
That’s a delicate thing.
It takes love to know when laughter helps.
It takes tenderness to know when a joke would be too much.
But when someone gets it right, it can feel like air returning to a room.
I’ve had those moments.
You’re carrying something heavy, and then somebody says something so perfectly ridiculous that you laugh before you can stop yourself. For a second, the burden is still there, but it isn’t the only thing there.
That matters.
Sometimes the laugh doesn’t solve a thing, and yet it changes the moment enough for you to take the next step.
Joy does that.
It doesn’t always move the mountain.
Sometimes it just hands you a sandwich halfway up.
And honestly, some days that is enough.
We have a strange habit of ranking emotions as if only the painful ones are deep. Grief is deep. Compassion is deep. Anger at injustice can be deep. Longing is deep.
But joy is deep too.
Real joy is not shallow just because it smiles.
It can come from gratitude. It can come from relief. It can come from belonging. It can come from the sudden realization that, after everything you’ve survived, you are still capable of delight.
That is no small thing.
When life has knocked you around and you still laugh, that laughter is not foolish. It is evidence that something in you refused to become stone.
There’s courage in that.
There’s even defiance in it.
Not the bitter kind of defiance that says, “I’ll show them.”
A gentler kind.
The kind that says, “I am still here, and I will not let pain have every room in my heart.”
That feels close to holy to me.
Because the Love Force is not only about endurance.
It is also about aliveness.
Love wants us to care, yes. Love wants us to grow, to soften, to forgive, to make room, to repair what we can. But love also wants us to notice the color of the sky. It wants us to enjoy the laugh of a friend. It wants us to taste the food, hear the music, pet the dog, watch the bird acting like it owns the whole neighborhood, and feel a little glad that we got to be here for this strange, brief, beautiful day.
That does not make us less serious about suffering.
It may actually make us more able to respond to it.
Because a heart with no joy eventually runs out of fuel.
You can’t pour compassion forever from an empty place. You can try, and many of us do, but sooner or later the weariness starts talking louder than the love.
Joy refills something.
Not all at once.
Not magically.
But in little ways.
A good conversation. A silly video. A memory that makes you grin. A song from years ago that still knows where you live. A shared laugh with someone who has seen you at your worst and still chooses to sit nearby.
Those things do more than entertain us.
They reconnect us.
They remind us that life is not only something to survive. It is something to participate in.
And maybe that’s the thread we’ve been following all week.
Humor, little joys, familiar souls, everyday wonder, and now joy itself.
They all pull us back into connection.
They say, “Come back. Don’t drift too far into despair. Don’t let the noise convince you that beauty has disappeared. Don’t become so guarded that delight can’t find a way in.”
The world gives us plenty of reasons to close down.
Love keeps finding reasons to open us back up.
Sometimes those reasons are grand and unforgettable.
More often, they are tiny.
The cup of coffee is just right.
The old song comes on.
The person you love sends a message that makes no sense to anyone else but means everything to you.
A child laughs in public and, for a moment, everyone nearby remembers they are human.
The dog tilts its head like it understands taxes better than Congress.
The day is not fixed.
But it is softened.
And softened days are not nothing.
We underestimate them.
We underestimate the mercy of a softened day.
There are people still here because of one softened day after another. A laugh here. A kindness there. A small reason to get through the evening. A tiny light at the edge of the room.
Joy can be part of survival.
I don’t mean that in a greeting card way.
I mean it in the real way.
The way people who have hurt deeply understand.
Sometimes you’re not ready for hope in big capital letters. It feels too far away. Too demanding. Too bright.
But a little joy can slip in without asking you to make a speech about it.
It sits down beside you.
It doesn’t require you to be healed.
It simply says, “Let’s breathe for a minute.”
That’s love.
At least, I believe it is.
I believe joy is one of the quiet tools of the Love Force. It keeps us from becoming only what hurt us. It keeps our souls from shrinking around the wound. It gives us back a little room.
Room to laugh.
Room to rest.
Room to remember that the story is not finished.
And when we share joy, we become part of that force.
Every silly message, every kind joke, every warm invitation, every song sent to a friend, every small attempt to brighten someone’s day carries more weight than we realize.
We may think we’re just being lighthearted.
But sometimes lighthearted is exactly what a heavy heart needs.
That’s why I don’t want us to dismiss the small joys.
I don’t want us to treat laughter as less meaningful than tears.
Both can be sacred.
Sometimes they even show up together.
You can be sitting with people you love, remembering someone you miss, and one funny story breaks through. Suddenly everyone is laughing with tears in their eyes. The grief is still there. The love is still there too.
Maybe that’s one of the clearest pictures of the thread.
Joy and sorrow, woven together.
Memory and laughter.
Absence and gratitude.
The ache of missing someone and the strange gift of still being able to smile because they were here.
That thread is strong.
It has to be.
It carries a lot.
As we close out this week, maybe the invitation is simple.
Let yourself have some joy.
Not because everything is easy.
Not because the world has suddenly become gentle.
Let yourself have joy because love needs living people to move through.
And living people need more than duty.
We need delight.
We need play.
We need friendship.
We need the small, ridiculous, beautiful things that remind us the thread is still warm in our hands.
So laugh when laughter comes.
Notice the tiny joys.
Be grateful for the people who make life less weird.
Smile back when love winks at you.
And when you can, become one of those little lights for someone else.
You may not know what they are carrying.
You may not know how close they are to giving up on the day.
Your small kindness, your humor, your warmth, your delight in simply being with them may become part of what helps them keep going.
That is not small.
That is love at work.
That is the Love Force moving through ordinary life with its sleeves rolled up and maybe, just maybe, a grin on its face.
Because joy is not the opposite of seriousness.
Joy is part of what gives seriousness a soul.
It keeps us tender.
It keeps us open.
It keeps us connected.
And in a world that keeps trying to pull everything apart, joy helps keep the thread alive.

We can let ourselves feel grateful without needing to turn the whole thing into a doctrine.
That’s where I think love lives so often.
Not in the need to explain everything.
Just in the willingness to be touched by what arrives.
A wink is not a speech.
That’s part of what makes it delightful.
It’s quick. It’s small. It may not even be noticed by anyone else. But when it happens to you, it can brighten the whole room inside your chest.
Maybe you’re walking through a store, thinking about someone you miss, and there’s their favorite candy on a shelf right at eye level.
Maybe you’re cleaning out a drawer and find an old note at exactly the moment you needed to remember that you’ve been loved.
Maybe you’re feeling invisible, and someone you barely know says, “I was thinking about you.”
That can be enough.
Not enough to solve everything.
Not enough to repair the entire world before lunch.
But enough to remind you that life is still alive around you.
There’s a difference between being superstitious and being open.
I think that difference matters.
Superstition tries to control mystery. It wants signs to behave like instructions. It wants guarantees. It wants a little cosmic vending machine where you put in a fear and get out certainty.
Wonder is softer than that.
Wonder doesn’t grab the moment by the collar and demand a full explanation.
It simply says, “Well, that was lovely.”
And maybe that’s enough.
The older I get, the more I think we need that kind of enough.
We are surrounded by things that want to make us hard, suspicious, and tired. There’s always another outrage waiting in line. Another argument. Another reason to believe the world has lost its mind and left no forwarding address.
So when a small moment of grace slips through, I don’t want to swat it away just because I can’t prove where it came from.
I’d rather receive it.
That’s not always easy for me.
I’m much better at analyzing a moment than receiving it. I can take a beautiful thing and immediately start taking it apart like a cheap radio.
Was that coincidence?
Was that timing?
Was I projecting meaning onto it?
Was my brain just connecting dots because brains love dots?
Maybe.
But after all the questions, there’s still that quiet little warmth that says, “Bob, you can just be thankful.”
The Love Force doesn’t always arrive with thunder.
A lot of the time, it comes through little nudges.
A memory.
A laugh at the right second.
A phrase that stays with you.
A person showing up.
A door that doesn’t open, and later you realize it was mercy.
A door that does open, and you stand there blinking because you didn’t know life still had that kind of surprise left in it.
I’m careful with this because I know people can get hurt by careless spiritual language.
When someone is suffering, the last thing they need is somebody saying, “Everything happens for a reason,” as if pain is a puzzle piece that simply needs better lighting.
I don’t believe love asks us to explain away suffering.
Love sits with people inside it.
Love brings soup.
Love answers the message.
Love keeps watch.
And sometimes, while we are trying to survive something difficult, a tiny flash of kindness appears. I don’t think we have to call that an explanation. We can call it company.
That may be what the wink really is.
Not a full answer.
Not a map of the future.
Just company.
A reminder that we are not as abandoned as fear would like us to believe.
I’ve had moments like that in grief.
You probably have too.
Something small happens, and for one second, the veil feels thin. Not gone. Not ripped open in some dramatic movie scene. Just thin enough that love seems close.
A song.
A smell.
A phrase someone used to say.
A joke you know they would have loved.
And suddenly, for a breath or two, absence is not quite as empty.
That doesn’t erase the loss.
It doesn’t make grief tidy.
But it can give grief a place to rest.
Maybe that’s why these little winks matter so much. They don’t demand that we stop hurting. They simply remind us that hurting is not the only thing happening.
There is still tenderness.
There is still memory.
There is still connection.
There is still something reaching toward us, even when we don’t know what to call it.
And I do think love has a playful side.
We make love so serious sometimes that we forget it can have a grin on its face.
Real love can laugh.
Real love can tease gently.
Real love can show up in ridiculous timing and leave us shaking our head.
There are days when the Love Force feels like it has a very strange sense of humor.
You drop something, bend down to pick it up, and find the thing you were looking for.
You take the wrong turn and run into the person you needed to see.
You complain about having no inspiration, and then the inspiration arrives in the most inconvenient place possible.
That last one may just be podcasting.
I don’t want a life so serious that I miss those moments.
I don’t want a faith so rigid that it has no room for delight.
I don’t want a mind so guarded that every mystery has to be dismissed before it can smile at me.
There’s a humble way to live with wonder.
We don’t have to claim more than we know.
We don’t have to turn every coincidence into a command.
We can hold mystery lightly.
That may be the healthiest way to hold it.
Because when we hold wonder lightly, it doesn’t become pressure. It becomes joy.
We can say, “I don’t know what that was, but I’m glad it happened.”
There’s freedom in that.
There’s also gratitude.
And gratitude changes the atmosphere of a life.
It doesn’t mean everything is fine. It doesn’t mean the hard things disappear. But gratitude keeps us from becoming blind to the good that still slips through.
A wink from love may not change the whole day.
Then again, maybe it does.
It may not change your circumstances, but it can change your posture toward them.
It can loosen the grip of dread for a minute.
It can remind you that the world is not only cruel, not only noisy, not only broken.
It is also strangely beautiful.
It is also full of timing we don’t control.
It is also full of people who appear at the right moment, memories that return when we need them, and small joys that seem to know exactly where we are hiding.
Maybe that’s not proof of anything.
But it’s still a gift.
And gifts do not become less real because they are small.
A wink is small.
A thread is small too.
But enough threads, held together, can become something strong.
So today, I hope you notice one.
Not because you force it.
Not because you go hunting for signs in every license plate, cloud formation, and breakfast pastry.
Just stay open.
Leave a little room in the day for love to be playful.
Leave a little room for timing to surprise you.
Leave a little room for the possibility that the world may still know how to smile.
And when one of those moments comes, don’t rush past it.
Pause.
Smile back.
Let yourself be grateful.
Because sometimes the Love Force doesn’t shout.
Sometimes it winks.
And if we’re paying attention, that little wink can be enough to remind us that the thread is still there.
