In this week’s episode, we explore the evolution of Emma Chamberlain and why her audience is now saying they’ve started to outgrow her. In recent weeks, TikTok and YouTube have been flooded with videos from Emma’s fans criticising some recent episodes of her podcast, 'Anything Goes', and saying they feel like Emma’s takes are becoming increasingly out of touch. In this week’s episode, we explore fandom culture from an angle we haven’t looked at before – the fan-to-”famous fan” pipeline (46:56). While “famous fans” are definitely not a new phenomenon, it’s a growing one over the past few years as virality becomes easier to obtain. We look at some recent examples of “famous fans”—  like Johnny Silvestri, Ashley Leechin, Adam McIntyre, and Paige Neimann— and what this says about fan culture online, including the traits of fan communities that make it easier for individuals to rise through the ranks and become celebrities/objects of the fan culture themselves.

As tweens, teens, and adults interact on social media platforms together and the digital space becomes increasingly difficult to moderate, tween-specific content seems to have fallen through the cracks. From young girls incorporating anti-aging products in their skin-care routines to sharing revealing pictures of themselves online, the lack of "age-appropriate" content has seemingly led to many young people wanting to appear older than they are. And while this isn’t necessarily a new phenomenon, social media has definitely intensified the desire to grow up quickly.
