| Sister, Sinner with Claire Hoffman | 25 Jun 2025 | 01:11:45 | |
In this captivating episode, Rachel sits down with Claire Hoffman, journalist and author of the memoir Greetings from Utopia Park, to explore the enigmatic life of Aimee Semple McPherson, a pioneering female evangelist whose influence still resonates today. Claire delves into McPherson's rise to fame, her charismatic preaching style, and the scandal surrounding her mysterious disappearance in 1926 Los Angeles, which captivated the nation. Rachel and Claire discuss the complexities of power and belief, examining how McPherson's passionate drive to spread her gospel often clashed with societal expectations of women in her time. As they unpack the themes of celebrity culture, the addictive nature of transcendent experiences, and the challenges faced by women in religious leadership, Claire highlights the duality of McPherson's legacy—both as a groundbreaking figure and a tragic example of the pressures that come with fame. | The King James Virgins w/Rachel Holdt & Elizabeth Humble | 24 Apr 2024 | 01:18:38
Rachel Holdt and Elizabeth Humble are sisters who were raised in an Independent Fundamentalist Baptist Church they’ve now identified as a Cult, Cornerstone Baptist Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 1998, Rachel was the whistleblower instrumental in the eventual arrest and criminal conviction of Charles Dean Miller, the son of a pastor who would become known to be a decades-long serial pedophile. After law enforcement investigations were corroborated by multiple generations and dozens of victims, his sexual abuse of underage girls was discovered. Liz and Rachel’s forthcoming memoir tentatively titled “The King James Virgin and Other Myths of the IFB” tells this story.
Rachel currently resides in Southern California, where she works as an educator in the field of biomechanics through the modalities of dance and pilates. Her extraordinary experiences growing up in an oppressively restrictive environment that harshly policed the female body, inform her teaching philosophy through a lens of empathy and inclusion of all bodies.
Elizabeth currently lives in Oklahoma near her three daughters and two granddaughters, where she works as a barber, seamstress, and food truck owner. She also sits on the board of the Stillwater Downtown Association. Elizabeth attended Nazarene Bible College and later obtained a business management degree following her barber schooling at New Mexico Junior College.
In this first half of a two-part conversation, Rachel and Elizabeth provide background on their childhood as members of an IFB-based cult, offering insights on the effects of restrictive environments, psychological and sexual abuse, and the lasting impacts these abuses had on their adult lives.
Before You Go: Rachel points out how rare it is for children raised in cults to maintain healthy relationships with their family members.

| Fighting Excommunication w/Tammy Synovec | 20 Mar 2024 | 01:22:57 | |
Today we continue our conversation from last week with Tammy Synovec. Tammy was first introduced to Scientology in 1993 by a friend she met at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. At this vulnerable time in her life, the ready-made group of friends in Scientology were of course there to welcome her with open arms....little did she know that she would become a dedicated Scientologist from that point on. Tammy became deeply immersed in the cult for 17 long years while they controlled every aspect of her life. In 2010, after completing 90 hours of “counseling sessions" in an attempt to move up the ranks of Scientology, she realized the dream she had been chasing would never become a reality, and began backing away quietly.
Tammy wanted to return to the show to offer further details about her complex experience with Scientology and offer more insights for others on a similar path of healing. So if you have not already, please go back and listen to last week’s episode where Tammy introduces her story.
In this continuation of Tammy's story, she shares details from the years of struggle it took to get her husband out of Scientology and the continued difficulties she faces as she attempts to do the same for her daughter.
Before You Go: Rachel speaks about her experience supporting Tammy through the disconnection of her family, witnessing firsthand the abusive nature of Scientology.

| Detoxing From Scientology w/Tammy Synovec | 13 Mar 2024 | 01:03:07 | |
Tammy Synovec was first introduced to Scientology in 1993 by a friend she met at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.
Tammy would try to remain under the radar as she devoured all of the information about Scientology she was previously forbidden from accessing. It was at this point that Tammy sought counseling with me and we worked together to find ways to get through to her daughter Julia and her late husband Derrick, who were both still under Scientology's spell. By 2016 Derrick was finally willing to work with Tammy to save their daughter, but sadly passed away on March 13th, 2021, and their daughter unfortunately remains in Scientology, disconnected from her entire family.
Today, on the 3rd anniversary of Derrick's passing, Tammy will be sharing the first part of her story in hopes that it might help other survivors cope with their own experience and hopefully gain insights on their healing journeys.
In this moving conversation, Tammy explains the circumstances surrounding her introduction to Scientology. She discusses with Rachel the lingering effects of long-term cultic involvement
Before You Go: Rachel exposes the manipulation behind Scientology's teachings on "reactivity" explaining how cult leaders vilify anything they see as adversarial.

| If Scientology Ruled The World with Jon Atack | 18 Jun 2025 | 01:10:36 | |
In the latest episode, Rachel continues her enlightening dialogue with Jon Atack, a prominent expert on authoritarian cults. This episode serves as a critical reminder of the psychological tactics that leaders employ to manipulate their followers, often leading them to act against their own interests. The conversation kicks off with Rachel and Jon discussing the nature of leadership and the subtle ways in which individuals can be led astray. Atak, who has dedicated his career to understanding cult dynamics, shares compelling insights into how leaders can sway followers by playing on their emotions and fears. He emphasizes that the ability to think critically is essential in recognizing and resisting these manipulative behaviors. Jon highlights the importance of understanding the mechanisms of control that are often at play within various societal structures, including politics, religion, and even personal relationships. He argues that many individuals fall victim to these tactics due to a combination of cognitive dissonance and emotional conviction, which can cloud their judgment and lead to compliance with harmful ideologies. Throughout the episode, Bernstein and Atack explore the broader implications of these dynamics, touching on how educational systems often fail to equip individuals with the tools necessary for critical thinking. Atack's work, including his influential book "Opening Our Minds," sheds light on the pervasive nature of cultic behaviors and their prevalence in everyday life. | Shining Light On A Dark World w/Sochil Martin | 06 Mar 2024 | 01:31:02
Sochil Martin is a Mexican American woman born and raised in the religious high control group La Luz del Mundo. She was groomed from a young age to be a "concubine" for the leader of the organization, becoming a slave to the leadership. After escaping at 30 years old, Sochil, with the help of her husband Martin and family, began seeking justice and founded the WithYou Foundation in 2020. The foundation works to change legislation to help survivors of human trafficking in high control groups. Sochil, now 37 and happily married, is dedicated to helping others break free from similar situations through prevention, justice, and healing.
In this emotional and inspiring conversation Sochil shares with Rachel how she was able to break free of the abuse her family endured for 5 generations over 100 years by La Luz Del Mundo. Together they discuss how institutions have failed to keep children and adults safe from abuse with complacency, bureaucracy, and ignorance and what Sochil is now doing to change that.
Before You Go: Rachel explains how the authoritarian control of cults can often cause dissociation and confusion in its followers hindering their critical thinking abilities and preventing defection.
Sochil will host a rally for survivors at the Mexican Consulate in San Diego, California this Friday, March 8th from 5-8 PM (PST) at 1549 India St, San Diego, CA 92101. There will be an open microphone for survivors, families, and activists. All supporters are encouraged to attend!

| The Hate Next Door w/Matt & Tawni Browning | 07 Feb 2024 | 01:13:43 | |
Matt and Tawni Browning are the authors of the new book "The Hate Next Door: Undercover within the New Face of White Supremacy" Matt is an internationally recognized authority on the inner workings of white supremacy groups. As an undercover detective for more than two decades in Arizona, Browning has been infiltrating, documenting, and disrupting White supremacy movements from the inside, gaining an intimate vantage point to the KKK, border militias, Proud Boys, and other White power groups, as they organized and grew their ranks which included police force and military veterans.
Together with his intrepid wife, Tawni, he adopted fake IDs and ideologies, seeking the arrest of hate group participants. What others dismissed as fringe groups, Browning quickly recognized as large and interconnected organizations permeating every facet of American society, effectively spreading their dangerous and repugnant rhetoric at unprecedented speeds.
Tawni Browning considers herself first and foremost a mother of five. Beyond that, she was the Supervising and Casting Producer for A&E’s “Escaping Polygamy,” a series documenting the trials and struggles of individuals attempting to leave the cult life of polygamy.
For years, Tawni has been assisting her husband in the investigations of numerous skinhead organizations. With her covert investigative tactics, Tawni was instrumental in the “shutting down” of one of the world's largest and most violent skinhead organizations. Tawni continues to gather intelligence on various individuals and religious extremists throughout the world.
The series “Escaping Polygamy” is airing now on A&E and Matt and Tawni’s new book “ The Hate Next Door“ is available on Amazon and at local bookstores.
In this inspiring and important discussion, Matt and Tawni share fascinating details of their personal and professional lives dedicated to fighting hate and authoritarianism respectively. Throughout the conversation the couple detail the similarities between white supremacist and fundamentalist Christian ideology, offering meaningful insight into de-radicalization and healing modalities.

| Taking Off The Tinfoil Hat w/Cynane Shay | 31 Jan 2024 | 01:19:52 | |
Cynane Shay is a nuclear engineer in South Carolina. Her childhood in White Christian Nationalism normalized conspiracy theories like Obama “Birther-ism” and the Biblical apocalypse; but 2020, with COVID and Qanon, finally made her realize something was deeply wrong. Now Cynane is writing a book, “Taking Off the Tinfoil Hat: How Lizard People and Space Lasers Dismantled my Christian Worldview,” to process the deconstruction of her fundamentalist evangelicalism and her propagandistic patriotism. Losing loved ones to the pandemic was a tragedy, but losing loved ones to the rabbit hole was its own tragedy and Cynane needed to understand the “why.” So from the IBLP cult to Jewish space lasers, she pulled the thread, cracked her faith, and found the inseparable link between cults, conspiracy theories, and American White Christian Nationalism.
Throughout this highly informative conversation, Cynane expertly weaves in fascinating insights into the world of modern conspiracism as she explains her own deconstruction from Christian Nationalism.
Before You Go: Rachel expands on how Evangelicalism and Christian Nationalism can prime followers for falling down the rabbit hole of conspiracy theories.

This episode is a vital resource for anyone who has experienced the complexities of leaving a cult or high-control group and is seeking clarity on their journey to healing and self-discovery. | The Anatomy Of A Cult Member w/Jon Atack | 17 Jan 2024 | 01:35:06
Jon Atack is a leading expert on authoritarian cult groups as well as a best-selling author. He has worked with hundreds of former members and has lectured and written extensively in a career spanning four decades. Jon wrote the book, “Scientology: The Cult of Greed” as a simple introduction to the subject, while his influential book, “Let’s Sell These People a Piece of Blue Sky” is the only comprehensive history of the bizarre group known as Scientology.
Through his popular YouTube channel and podcast, simply titled, “Jon Atack and Friends”, he endeavors to make complex psychological ideas accessible. His scholarship has been supported by many academics from varying fields of study.
Jon’s book “Opening Our Minds” shows how cultic behaviors are established throughout society and sheds light on the methods used in pseudo-religions, therapy and commercial cults, terrorism, gangs, grooming, hazing, and modern slavery. He also shows that these methods succeed because of failures in our education system. In his spare time, Jon hybridizes tomatoes, plays drums, and paints.
In this information-dense and engaging discussion between longtime colleagues and friends, Rachel and Jon delve deep into the hearts and minds of people trapped in high-control groups.
Throughout the conversation, they touch on both the sociological and psychological factors that drive people into destructive groups and offer insights on the healing process for those who escape.
Before You Go: Rachel explains how simply recontextualizing the language of cult leaders can help reveal the absurdity of their words, even to the most indoctrinated followers.

| God, Sex, and Rich People w/ Mattie Jo Cowsert | 10 Jan 2024 | 01:06:40 | |
Mattie Jo Cowsert was a pastor’s kid and proud purity ring-wearer before she moved to New York City and experienced an unexpected worldview and identity implosion. When the marriage equality act passed in 2015, Mattie Jo decided to share how the queer community was one of the catalysts for questioning everything she’d been taught, in her first publicly released blog post entitled: God and the Gays. This was the start of her popular blog, God, Sex & Rich People. Before terms like “deconstruction”, “purity culture” or “Ex-vangelical” became hashtags all over the internet, God, Sex & Rich People exposed the sometimes painful, sometimes hilarious realities of a young female Ex-evangelical navigating the diversity of the Big Apple, working for the 1%, and trying to have good sex without hating herself. Since then, Mattie Jo has developed a pilot for a series based on her blog which recently premiered at the Omaha Film Festival. Her forthcoming book is titled: "God, Sex, & Rich People: A Recovering Evangelical Testimony "
In this candid and vulnerable conversation Mattie Jo opens up to Rachel about her experiences growing up in purity culture, outlining the damaging theology of Christian Patriarchy. Throughout the discussion Mattie Jo and Rachel upack the systematic and insidious mechanisms of control inherent in the common practices of conservative ideologies.
Before You Go: Rachel explains how people leaving high control groups often miss out on the available resources and advocacy organizations in the broader community.

| The Mind Is Burning with Jonathan Hirsch | 11 Jun 2025 | 01:07:24 | |
In this thought-provoking episode, Rachel welcomes back Jonathan Hirsch, an award-winning podcast producer and founder of Neon Hum Media, to discuss his powerful journey growing up in a cult led by Franklin Jones. Jonathan shares his experiences of navigating the complexities of being raised in a high-control environment, and the emotional turmoil that comes with caring for a parent who was both a figure of authority and a source of conflict. As Jonathan reflects on his childhood, he delves into the challenges of reconciling his upbringing with his current role as a father. He candidly discusses the lack of emotional connection he experienced with his parents and how that influenced his understanding of parenting. Jonathan's insights reveal the struggle many children of cults face when trying to find their own identity and parenting style in the absence of healthy role models. Throughout the conversation, Rachel and Jonathan explore themes of moral injury, the quest for healing, and the importance of recognizing the impact of trauma on familial relationships. Jonathan's new memoir, The Mind is Burning: Losing My Father to a Cult and Dementia, provides a deeper look into his journey and the lessons he's learned along the way. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the complexities of cult dynamics and the lasting effects on those who grow up within them. | Why Don't You Say Something w/Eva Collins | 06 Dec 2023 | 01:21:42
Eva Collins is a content creator and online business consultant with over 20 years of experience in the spiritual and personal development world and 8 years in the online business and coaching industry. She has 750 hours of yoga teacher training, along with certifications in Reiki and health coaching. Over the years, during her entrepreneurship journey, she started learning from and working for some big names in the online business industry, and during the pandemic, she slowly began to realize that she’d found herself caught up in an online business cult— even though she’d never met most of these people or the teacher in person.
After waking up to the manipulation, abuse, and shady practices she had seen, she quit everything. She quit her online coaching business and started working at a nursing home doing bedside care. She created the Instagram account called “why don't you say something” to call out manipulation and empower people to speak up, sharing people’s stories and experiences anonymously. One of the things that fueled her to see the truth and share it, was her previous experience in the One Taste Cult in New York City, 10 years ago. She saw through it then, spoke up about it, and helped others break free from the group, hosting them at her house when they’d decided to leave. Today, Eva is passionate about helping people recover from spiritual abuse and navigate the online business world without falling for the same traps. She’s on a mission to promote authenticity, honesty, and ethical practices in both the spiritual and marketing realms.
In this insightful conversation, Eva details her experience getting wrapped up in the often shady world of online coaching, throughout the discussion, she points out some of the important red flags to watch out for when encountering "professionals" in this new and growing industry. Rachel points out the parallels of coaching influencers with that of cult leaders or high-control online groups and gurus.
Before You Go: Rachel explains how grounding the true helping professions can be for its practitioners and explains why you should be wary of new terminology used to imply licensure or legitimacy where it is not earned or warranted.

Returning guest, Erin Burchwell is a Columbus, Ohio-based florist, designer, and illustrator. She grew up as a faculty kid on the campus of Bob Jones University, an extremely conservative Christian college known for its strict rules and controversial beliefs. In 2014, Erin interviewed with GRACE, an independent ombudsman who reviewed the University’s mishandling of sexual assault reports. She and others chose to break their anonymity in the report when the school fired the GRACE team.
Erin manages her own floral business specializing in events, décor and commissioned murals. Some of her work was recently featured online by Architectural Digest this year. She has illustrated three children’s picture books about Ohio and enjoys visiting schools and teaching students about publishing. Erin’s commitments extend well beyond her business. | Healing From IBLP w/ Chad Harris & Lindsey Williams | 01 Nov 2023 | 01:30:53
Chad Harris and Lindsey Williams both grew up under the teachings of the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP) cult in their Advanced Training Institute homeschool program. They were also both featured in the popular Amazon docuseries ShinyHappy People: Duggar Family Secrets. Chad left those teachings behind in his mid-twenties and went on a journey of deconstruction and learning that led him to become a vocal critic of Christian fundamentalism. He started telling his life story on TikTok in 2020. His goal is to see the IBLP shuttered once and for all, and those responsible for its harm brought to justice and accountability for their actions.
Lindsey shares stories of her upbringing and how she has worked to heal from the indoctrination and conditioning that controlled so much of her life. Because of the ongoing abuse perpetrated by IBLP and its teachings, she continues to tell her story in order to show other survivors there's a community waiting to embrace them as they leave and thrive, in what she calls "real life".
She now works as a professional makeup artist and hair stylist in New York and Los Angeles, which she has done for the past 15 years. Her work has appeared in major magazines, beauty campaigns, commercials, films, music videos, and even on the red carpet. Lindsey says her career is the lifeboat that carried her away from the cult upbringing and helped bring color and joy back into her life.
Before You Go: Rachel reiterates how individual autonomy and independence threaten the control that cult leaders and manipulators seek through conformity and indoctrination.

| Tears of Eden w/ Katherine Spearing MA, CTRC | 18 Oct 2023 | 01:07:37 | |
Katherine Spearing is a Certified Trauma Recovery Coach and the founder of “Tears of Eden”, a nonprofit supporting survivors of Spiritual Abuse, where she hosts its' affiliate podcast, “Uncertain.” Katherine is also the host of the “Trauma & Pop Culture” podcast. As a writer, Katherine has penned several nonfiction articles and is also the author of the historical romantic comedy, “Hartford”, a novel that challenges gender roles in a patriarchal society. It’s a story that Katherine says should appeal especially to fans of Jane Austen. She has been a guest on a number of podcasts, and a guest speaker at multiple events.
In this honest and revealing conversation, Katherine opens up to Rachel about growing up in the "stay-at-home daughter" movement. She details her early skepticism of the patriarchal teachings she learned as a child and explains how she started to plot her escape from the toxic culture of high-control religion.
Before You Go: Rachel offers insights into how patriarchal Christian teachings can have long-term negative impacts on members of all genders. She goes on to explain how to safely incorporate teachings from the Bible that may still resonate with faithful survivors after leaving behind a toxic church culture.

Jolie Holland is a world-renowned Los Angeles-based artist who has forged a timeless, captivating musical legacy mining the depths of her, at times harrowing, life experiences.
