...Dear Diary - I'm doing a gig I've never done before. 20 Jun 202300:27:23

Text the show

No guest today. Just a kind of experiment.

About 6 weeks ago I did a gig on BVs for a singer called Will Young. I wanted to document the experience a little, so decided to record a bunch of voicenotes describing the process of learning the songs, rehearsals and some of the insecurities I felt going in to a new musical environment and doing something I'd never done before. I've done backing vocals plenty of times, but usually whilst sat at a piano, or with a bass hanging over my shoulder. This was a brand new experience.

I hope this doesn't come across as self-indulgent. If it does, I've definitely got it wrong. As mentioned, this is an experiment, and if it makes someone else feel a little better about their own anxieties or insecurities or whatever, then I'm happy.

Thanks so much for listening!

Text the show

No guest today. I’d planned on doing an episode where I answer questions from listeners, however, I thought it might be fun to answer some questions from some previous pod guests before then.

Before we get into the questions, please do consider leaving a rating or review. It really helps people find the podcast, and helps shine a light on these great musicians.

Right - here we go…

...Katie Holmes-Smith14 Mar 202301:20:54

Text the show

Katie is a singer based in London. Her credits include Adele, Craig David, Kylie Minogue and Professor Green.

Amongst many other things, we discussed Katie’s early realisation that fame wasn’t for her, dealing with nerves, the power of posting a CD to a local producer, and balancing work and life whilst doing Adele’s Las Vegas residency.

Hearing Katie explain how she juggles the travel, the gig itself and family life was really inspiring to me. Katie - If you’re reading this, huge respect!

As usual, please consider leaving a nice rating or review. It really doesn’t take long, but is a huge help for the podcast. I think it’s worth mentioning that nobody involved with this podcast makes any money from it. It’s just a fun way for me to try and shine a light on all these talented people.

I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did.

... Jerry Hey07 Mar 202301:12:56

Text the show

The word legend is often thrown around without consideration, but for this episode, “legend” seems appropriate.

Jerry Hey is a trumpet player and arranger based in LA. He has six Grammy wins and eleven nominations to his name. He’s worked with the likes of Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Earth, Wind & Fire, Frank Sinatra and Whitney Houston. His actual list of credits is way too long to get into here. Not to mention the film and TV credits.

Amongst many other things, we discussed Jerry’s early thoughts on jumping from classical music to Jazz and Pop, how being in Hawaii changed his life, getting the call from Quincy Jones, and how although technology keeps changing, great players will always be a part of the music making process.

I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did.

Text the show

Rob is a bass player based in London.

Most recently, he's been on a world tour with Jacob Collier. His list of credits includes the likes of Laura Mvula, Jordan Rakei, Zero 7 and Quincy Jones.

Amongst other things, we discussed diversification as a session musician, Rob's interesting relationship with the fretboard, the cassette that really got him in to music, and getting in to coffee and chess.

(As of February 28th 2023, Rob and I have yet to play a game of chess. Mainly because I think he'll destroy me...)

I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did.

...Simon "Diffy" Difford21 Feb 202301:18:11

Text the show

A slightly different episode today.

I wanted to shed a bit of light on someone who does a job most people don’t see. As session musicians, we’re often told a time to be somewhere, we arrive, and our equipment is already set up. Not to mention the stage and lights and whatnot. I thought it’d be fun to chat with a backline technician about what they do and what it’s like to be on that side of a gig or tour.

Diffy is a backline technician who specialises in drums and percussion. For the last twenty years he’s been touring with artists like Liam Gallagher, Glass Animals, Jamiroquai and Tom Jones.

We discussed his move from drummer to drum tech, balancing tours with being a dad, what exactly a backline tech does, and how touring can be a lonely but brilliant job.

There was a weird issue with Diffy’s airpods for a while, so please excuse the clicking noises. They do eventually stop, I promise!

By the way, please check out the links at the bottom of the show notes. You can support the podcast, and also email me. I’m looking to do a Q&A episode soon, so send your questions to nwinsessionwith@gmail.com.

I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did.

...Elle Cato14 Feb 202301:06:13

Text the show

Elle is a singer based in London. As a backing vocalist, she can usually be found touring with the likes of Lisa Stansfield, Will Young, Van Morrison and Robbie Williams. I managed to catch her whilst in the middle of a tour with Robbie. Elle is covering the tour for another singer, so it was an interesting time to chat, not only as she was on tour, but because she was also having to fit in to a well oiled touring machine.

Amongst other things, we discussed working as a dep, signing to a major label at a young age, the power of one’s spirit, and always being professional on tour.

Elle and I had a chat after the recording and she mentioned she wanted me to add a message to anyone starting in the industry - “No gig is yours really. If you dep it out, you could lose it, or the artist/management could choose someone else at any time, and you have to be ok with that.

I hadn’t spoken to Elle for a few months, so it was great to catch up.

I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did.

(Recorded 27th Jan 2023)

Elle is also doing some wonderful work in the community via the Institute of Wellbeing.

Text the show

Before we get to today’s guest, I just want to apologise for my coughing during the chat. I was recovering from some crazy illness when we recorded, so I hope it doesn’t take away from what was a wonderful conversation.

Elliott is a drummer based in Cheshire.

His credits include artists like Tony Hadley, Leo Sayer, The Syd Lawrence Big Band, and Mike Stern.

Amongst many other things, we discussed music as an identity, the Buddy Rich memorial scholarship concert, the importance of sight reading, and therapy. As you know, you can now show your support to the podcast by subscribing from as little as $3 a month. At the time of recording, that’s about £2.39 a month. ...Ralph Salmins07 Feb 202301:27:10

Text the show

Before I introduce today’s guest, I want to recommend a couple of podcasts to you. I recently spoke with Sebastian Philpott and Verity Simmons after my episode with Camilla Pay. Turns out Seb and Verity were due to speak with Camilla for their podcast shortly afterwards, but I’d basically asked all their questions. Seems it was a good thing and they ended up having a great chat about all things non-music on their “Three In A Bar” podcast. If you’re interested in musicians and the goings on in the industry, please go and check it out. Also, my mate and previous pod guest Rob Harris has a podcast called “Rob’s Funk and Junk” podcast. It’s often him talking about work, life and music and has some interesting, fun and sometimes daft insights into the industry.

Anyway - back to episode 18. Today’s guest is Ralph Salmins.

Ralph is a drummer based between the UK and south west France. He’s a first call session musician whose list of credits is so long, I had to stop reading whilst researching for the pod. A few highlights I picked out include Paul McCartney, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, James Brown, Quincy Jones and Lady Gaga. They’re just the ones from the pop world. There are countless Jazz credits, and Ralph has played on over 180 film soundtracks. He’s also a professor of drum kit at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. We spoke briefly before the recording and he told me his story was boring… Ralph, if you’re listening, I disagree…

Amongst other things, we discussed Ralph’s early playing years, working with Van Morrison, being open to new styles of music, and the benefits of learning about engineering.

Apologies in advance as there were one or two wifi issues, but you can hear 99.9% of the conversation clearly.

I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did!

...Christian Gulino31 Jan 202301:14:02

Text the show

Christian is a keyboard player, MD and producer based in London. He can usually be found touring the world with artists like Will Young, Roxy Music and Kylie Minogue.

Amongst other things, we discussed his family’s decision to move from Sicily to London, his adjustment from self-confessed Jazz snob to gigging in the pop world and the importance of psychology in the session world.

I should point out that for some reason, my voice is a little quieter than Christian’s, so I’m sorry if that causes anyone any issues!

I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did!

Apologies in advance for the wifi issues we had at the start. They get resolved by 2.57.

Frida is a session singer based in London. She’s spent the best part of the last decade recording and touring with some of the biggest names in the music business such as Lianne La Havas, Ed Sheeran, Liam Gallagher and NAO.

We discussed Frida’s confidence as a kid and how that’s changed, big auditions,  and how to fill the time between tours.
