| I'm With the Band, Man - Episode 055 - Thomas Brechter Of Man Vs. Humanity / Man the Change / The Tidal Sleep | 01 Sep 2025 | 02:01:57 | |
We're back with another amazing international guest - this time we brought master bassist (and master of all things stringed, actually) Thomas Bretcher to talk all things music, Germany, and everything that goes into being a talented musician in an amazing band. This is actually an exceptionally amazing episode for me because when I first heard The Tidal Sleep around a decade ago there was just something about their energy and their emotion and their music that really spoke to me and as with all my guests, I'm beyond humbled that anyone would take time out of their busy schedule to sit down for way too long and talk to me. You'll hear about Thomas' entry into music and what drew him into the scene, how effortlessly he was able to set down the guitar and pick up the bass, and follow that thread through Man Vs. Humanity, Man the Change, The Tidal Sleep, and even current day with him doing music with some of his favorite people and playing bass for Mortal Form. I honestly don't know where people get the time. Either way, like all of my episodes, this is one of my favorites and I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did. Thomas is an amazing guy (he's my hero!) and it was such a wonderful talk. | I'm With the Band, Man - Episode 053 - Greg Daniels of Vaux / Glass Hits / Drop To Pop | 18 Aug 2025 | 01:21:01
Denver Institution and all-around nice guy (and better than he gives himself credit for guitarist) Greg Daniels of Vaux / Glass Hits / Drop To Pop came onto the show to discuss all of the things that makes him the person he is. Want to hear the story about how he ALMOST was in a band with friend of the show Chuck Coffey? Or how many bands he juggled at once? Or how massively large his record store is? You'll discover all that and then some during our conversation with one of the creative forces behind some amazing bands. https://www.instagram.com/drop.to.pop/ https://www.instagram.com/vaux_band/ https://www.instagram.com/gregdaniels/ The two songs used in this episode are Glass Hits songs: "Better Never Than Late" Off the album Better Never Than Late "Action Potential" Off the Split with Accordion Crimes
| I'm With the Band, Man - Special Episode 052 - Shane Mehling & Demian Johnston Discuss Noise | 11 Aug 2025 | 01:46:57 | |
In this chaotic conversation, Demian & Shane come back on the show as a dynamic duo (you won't believe how dynamic) to discuss noise as a "genre." Although the conversation bounces around, we discuss some of the origins of noise, its connections to outsider performance art, some of the dangerous historical trends and fads associated with it, and what that noise ethos means to Shane and Demian. If you were like me and were curious about noise but were too afraid to ask, I don't know if you would've asked this question, but you'd definitely get a few answers. The songs used in this episode are intended to be representative of noise and are Throbbing Gristle - "Hamburger Lady" Merzbow - "Woodpecker No. 1"
| I'm With the Band, Man - Episode 051 - Rich Lippold Talks The Deadly's "Phantoms In the Frequencies" | 04 Aug 2025 | 01:20:08 | |
Rich Lippold is back for the second part of our conversation where we do a deep dive on The Deadly's "Phantoms In the Frequencies" Since this is the band's first material right out of the gate after being fully formed, the making of this album is closely tied into their origin story and Rich shares his insight into everything that went into creating this EP. Find out how they got signed, how the album got recorded, and so much more. If you've never given this EP a proper listen, first listen to how it was made then put it on and enjoy something that has been missing from your life. | I'm With the Band, Man - Episode 050 - Rich Lippold of THE DEADLY | 28 Jul 2025 | 01:16:32
We don't know if Rich pulled the short straw or what, but he's the lucky guy that made it on episode 50! I can't believe this is something that actually happened. Either way, Rich discuses his early years, what got him into music, his early attempts to move away (and what kept him there) and eventually the chain of events that led him to the Emerald Isle. It's always great to have anyone from the Philadelphia scene on the show to discuss everything that was going on in that magical time and place. Like every other Philadelphia musician we've had on here, every band sounds completely unique and interesting and Rich was the rule, not the exception in this case. He is truly a great dude and we're lucky he graced us with his presence. https://hawthornestreetrecords.bandcamp.com/album/phantoms-in-the-frequencies https://plutorecords.bandcamp.com/album/the-wolves-are-here-again Rich's upcoming publication: https://www.schlock.co.uk/ The two songs used in this episode are both The Deadly songs off "The Wolves Are Here Again" These Are Cherry Blossoms Danger Endanger

For this episode that has taken over a year to materialize, we sit down with Justin Mank to discuss his various (and varied!) musical outputs as well as his direct influence on the St. Louis scene. Like so many of the guests on this show, you can hear about the trajectory and the various interests that were floating around while Not Waving But Drowning was during their span leading up to their dissolution, their time away, and their eventual official reunion culminating in two new songs. Fast forward to the present and you'll discover Justin's love for ambient and the freedom he has when constructing sonic landscapes with Two Hands | One Engine. | I'm With the Band, Man - Episode 047 - Joshua Alvarez Discusses Crossed Key'ss "Saviors" | 07 Jul 2025 | 01:00:29
We bring Josh aka Joey Angel back for the back-half of our conversation where he and I did a deep dive into everything that made Crossed Keys' "Saviors" such an amazing album. Since that was their first full release as a band, the conversation also digs into the origins of Crossed Keys and how they came to be. If you're like me and you're at all curious about the meaning behind some of these songs or want to just listen to Josh's explanation of some of the lyrics, this is definitely a conversation for you. It's weird that so often on my side of the screen it seems that the album almost came together effortlessly but there is so much that goes into writing and recording and releasing and touring and everything that makes Crossed Keys the band that they are and Saviors the release that it is. And we're all exceptionally lucky that the band is still going strong and is showing no signs of losing steam. We sit down with Joshua Alvarez to discuss growing up in Jersey, the move to Philadelphia, his upbringing, and what got him into music. I wasn't at all expecting the direction of this conversation and it was fun, informative, and amusing all at the same time. Joshua has some amazing stories and his time as a bassist especially was intriguing. Either way, sit back and listen to the man behind one of the best voices in the scene as he shares stories that you won't see coming. It was a great conversation where we got a peek behind the curtain into how this seminal album came into being. It was truly a creative effort to take the era from the EP and move it to the next level onto this LP. The album is a banger from start to finish and so many of these tracks remain part of the live setlist even today so you know they've stood the test of time. Every time we have one of these conversations I appreciate the music so much more when I understand the creative process behind it and this conversation was equally amazing. | I'm With the Band, Man - Episode 043 - Florian Zeh Discusses Rodha's "Welter Through the Ashes" | 09 Jun 2025 | 01:05:10
Florian returns for the back-end of the conversation where he and I do a deep dive into all things 2014's "Welter Through the Ashes" by RODHA. We discuss everything that went into the album, how it built upon the "Raw" album that came before it to bring up to the next level, and what happened after the release of the album. Having this conversation felt like I was hanging out in Hamburg in the mid 2010s and given the fly on the wall treatment to really experience everything that went into the construction of this seminal album. It was a pleasure to have Florian on and we hope you enjoy the listen. The two songs used in this episode are (obviously) taken from Welter Through the Ashes "Overloaded" "Welter Through the Ashes" Fun fact - Florian said that not only is "Welter" his favorite RODHA track, it's actually his favorite song he's written for any of his musical projects. | I'm With the Band, Man - Episode 041 - Thommy Browne Discusses Chime Hours' Self-Titled EP | 26 May 2025 | 01:17:13
We brought Thommy Browne back to discuss his criminally lesser-known project Chime Hours. This time around, instead of focusing just on the album, we actually dedicate the entire episode to a discussion of all things Chime Hours - find out how they formed, what their writing and recording was like, songs that didn't make the album, dissolution of the band, and so much more. Thommy once again brought his straightforward and direct approach to the conversation but also brought in some humor and was a wonderful storyteller as he recalled all of the things that made Chime Hours so unique and interesting. The two songs used in this episode are (obviously) taken from the Chime Hours EP "The Walking Man" "Bad Music Is Killing Home Downloading" Unfortunately, the CD is sold out but you can still get the album (and all the other amazing Noise Pollution releases) here: https://noisepollution.bandcamp.com/album/chime-hours Follow these links: https://highwayeyes.bandcamp.com/ https://ldb502.bigcartel.com/product/highway-eyes-west-texas-lottery-7 https://bythegraceofgod.bandcamp.com/album/colliding-tribes https://www.indecisionrecords.com/products/819925-automatic-the-limits-of-control https://miracledrug.bandcamp.com/

In what is sure to be a theme on the show, we also discuss the financial complexities of touring in the United States while also recognizing the strong influence of American music being exported into other countries. | I'm With the Band, Man - Special Episode 037 - Chuck Coffey and Mike Taylor - Alt-Country/Americana | 28 Apr 2025 | 01:17:39
Chuck and I had so much fun time we did a special episode we decided to make it a thing. The plan is to do ~4 a year around holidays so consider this to be the "Easter" episode. For this episode, Chuck brought on his good buddy Mike Taylor of Hooper to help with the conversation. This was a unique conversation for me because right up until about an hour before I hit record I was thinking I had absolutely no frame of reference to talk about alt-country or Americana but as the conversation unfolded, I realized I actually liked quite a bit. These episodes are always fun because for me they're kind of edutainment - I'm learning new and exciting things while talking with some of my favorite people. It's a classic win/win. If you're either like me and you're always curious about scene-adjacent music or if you're already a fan and are looking to hear people riff about the music, check this one out. It is always a treat to find a reason to get Chuck on the show to talk so we're privileged to get him back on and just talk shop for awhile. We sincerely hope you check out this unique episode. I asked both Chuck and Mike to pick one song they felt was a good representative of alt-country/Americana and they each came up with: Old 97's - "Timebomb" off the album Too Far To Care Lucero - "Little Silver Heart" off their self-titled album Lucero Check out Hooper stuff here: https://snappylittlenumbers.limitedrun.com/products/search?q=hooper Or here: Or all things Snappy Little Numbers here: https://snappylittlenumbers.limitedrun.com/ Or here: https://snappylittlenumbers.bandcamp.com/

| I'm With the Band, Man - Episode 031 - Nick Fantazzi of Memorial Day / Prema / CHRIST | 17 Mar 2025 | 01:41:13 | |
For episode 031 we brought on a guest I've "known" (in name only) for close to 30 years but someone I've never actually spoken with until we recorded this episode. Sticking with the Chicago theme, for episode 029 we bring Neil Sandler onto the show to talk all things him, his band, and Chicago. Neil has some really interesting stories to share across his 30+ years of being a musician across a bunch of bands. We discuss the other band with the "same name" (spelled differently) and the importance of selecting the right band name, especially in the internet era, to make that name stand out for the purposes of searching. It's always great to get guests on that played in bands I loved seeing live back in the day and Neil certainly doesn't disappoint. The songs in this episode are: Red Villain - Horse Traveler (from the album "Into the City's Arms" Gauge - Soothe (fom the compilation "II") Neil and his music can be found everywhere. | I'm With the Band, Man - Special Episode 019 - Loremaster Chuck Coffey Discusses Third-Wave Ska | 23 Dec 2024 | 01:52:30
As we get ready to close out the year, here's a special episode of "I'm With the Band, Man" where we bring back Chuck Coffey not as just a musician discussing his own bands (although there is certainly a healthy helping of discussion for his time in Mail Order Children) but as a source of all knowledge. Ska has always been one of those genres that I was exposed to because it was tangential and punk-adjacent but I never gave it its due nor did I ever delve deep into its rich history. Thankfully, Chuck is here to change all that and while we focus mainly on ska's "third-wave," we also dig into its roots and how the waves progressed. As any long-time listener can expect, we do go off-track and bounce around a bit in this conversation, but I think after listening you'll walk away if not with a newfound respect for ska as a type of music, at least a deeper understanding of why its something that so many people cherish and hold dear and why the emerging fourth-wave is still going strong and how it remains a vibrant scene. It is always a treat to find a reason to get Chuck on the show to talk so we're privileged to get him back on and just talk shop for awhile. We sincerely hope you check out this unique episode. The song in the introduction is "Let Me Down" by Mail Order Children and can be downloaded for FREE here: https://mailorderchildren.bandcamp.com/album/anthology The song for the outro is a very special Chuck Coffey hit under his professional name of Charlie Continental and is entitled "Much Better" and features guest spots by Daryl Wilson / Ella Sugar / The Calgary Family Singers. Like so many of Charlie Continental's songs, this song was released as a benefit for a ton of good causes. It can be purchased at Bandcamp where you can name your own price here with the option to buy the physical flexi: https://charliecontinental.bandcamp.com/album/be-much-better-feat-daryl-wilson-ella-sugar-and-the-calgary-family-singers-benefit-track OR directly from Snappy Little Numbers here: https://snappylittlenumbers.limitedrun.com/products/685702-charlie-continental-be-much-better-feat-daryl-wilson-ella-sugar-and-the-calgary-family-singers-flexi-disc-7
