S3 Ep 9: ‘Nutrigenomics in practice’ featuring Anne Pemberton
13 Sep 2024
00:46:40
Anne Pemberton is a functional medicine and nutrigenomics practitioner and trauma informed medical intuitive, and author of “Using nutrigenomics within personalised nutrition”. We talk about how the field of nutrigenomics has evolved in recent years, and how Anne has been at the forefront of setting out how to use DNA tests meaningfully in practice.
Anne discuss epigenetics, neurotransmitters, methylation, leaky gut and brain cells, neurodiversity, energetics, trauma, and so much more, peppered with generous gems of knowledge and wisdom along the way.
“So in effect you might give a folate or a B12 to help methylation for an example. But that isn’t truly what it’s about at all because there are all levels of what makes us sick, what makes the methylation cycle work ineffectively. And so we have to look at all those levels. So we’re looking at nutrition, lifestyle, minds, psyche... and then you’ve got to look at the environment that you’re in as well. What are the environmental triggers for causing gene expression?”

S3 Ep 8: ‘Harmonising Hormones Holistically’ featuring Orley Moyal from Bio-Nature
28 Jun 2024
01:02:56
Originally broadcast as a webinar on 27 April 2024, Orley explains how many of us know how stress may negatively affect the way we work, eat, sleep, think and feel. Yet few of us are aware of the profound impact that stress has on the whole female hormone cycle, from Puberty through to Menopause.
By exploring the interconnectedness of all parts of the Endocrine system and its hormones, Orley illustrates how interactions within this system and its key hormones, allows us to adapt to stress, especially in times of change, like the Menopause.
Combining this awareness with an understanding of nature’s most supporting & balancing plants and nutrients, will ultimately enable us to make these hormonal adjustments more positive and harmonious.
Key points:
Interconnected functioning of the Endocrine System i.e. H-P-T-A-G Axis. Interplay between the Adrenal, Thyroid, Pancreatic & Reproductive glands and hormones. Homeostatic relationship of the key Female Sex Hormones – Oestrogen, Progesterone & Prolactin and what happens when there’s an imbalance (incl. Causes & Symptoms). Natural hormone- balancing solutions including, Diet, Supplements and Probiotics

S2 Ep 3: 'The microbiome and the gut-brain axis' featuring Kiran Krishnan, Ph.D
14 Jul 2023
01:09:27
This week microbiologist Kiran Krishnan, Ph.D tells us why he’s so microbiome obsessed, particularly when it comes to brain and cognitive health. We talk about neurotransmitters and inflammation, anxiety and depression, cognitive dysfunction and Alzheimer’s. And then how to take what we know so far about the microbiome and how we can support it practically and holistically.
“Part of building resilience is building a healthy diversified microbiome because it's your microbiome that provides your resilience. It's your microbiome that codes for the vast majority of capabilities in your body, which includes things like detoxification and metabolisation of chemistries, and the function of your liver, to get rid of things that you put in your body that shouldn't be in your body. All of those things, right, the resilience we all wish to have comes from a healthy microbiome.”

S2 Ep 2: 'How mindfulness can support our clinical practice' featuring Katie Sheen Dip.ION, FdSc, PGCE, MA Education
07 Jul 2023
01:00:36
Katie Sheen is a mindfulness teacher and speaker, a nutritional therapist, and has a Masters degree in education.
She shares her experiences using mindfulness with nutrition clients – how mindfulness can help with making nutritional changes, and how nutritional support can help with being more settled and mindful. “It’s a fascinating two-way street we can offer people”
Katie also shares how mindfulness and self-compassion helped her deal with her own cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery.
“And what was amazing was that in that moment I thought: My poor body… my poor body… I can see how much it’s suffering. And again, what a gift to be able to switch immediately into compassion, rather than fear – and there definitely was fear, I’m not going to pretend there wasn’t fear, there was fear as well, but the fear wasn’t of my own body. And that was one of those doorways for me into really taking care of myself.”
Themes include deep listening, compassionate speech, how to become more self-aware and use that to showing kindness and care to ourselves.

S1 Ep 6: 'Latest science on the Ketogenic Diet' featuring Patricia Daly BA Hons, dipNT, mBANT, mNTOI
28 Apr 2023
00:50:10
Patricia Daly is a nutritional therapist and ketogenic diet expert, specialising in cancer. Most of us have come across at least the basics of the ketogenic diet, but Patricia is able to provide updates and insights that add new layers to its application. Her own experience in both following and supporting people with the ketogenic diet is invaluable, alongside her collaborations with like-minded health professionals.
Patricia explains about ketones and metabolic flexibility, the potential benefits of a ketogenic diet, when you would avoid a ketogenic diet and useful tests to help you figure this out, and some practicalities along the way. Patricia first came to the diet when she had cancer herself, and refers to this when describing the “privilege of witnessing the transformation of people who come to me”:
“I started my journey in the boot of the car. I didn’t even know, I didn’t want to know what they were going to do to me. Then I moved to sort of the child seat and then to passenger, until I had enough and started to drive. So that’s basically what I love to see in my clients as well, that’s people leaving from the boot to the driving seat.”

Join us at the IHCAN Summit 2023 live in London on Saturday 24 June.
June’s Summit will open eyes to the true power of nutritional medicine. We don’t treat cancer, but we can offer the finest personalised nutrition support for people WITH cancer thanks to Mary Beth Gonzalez and Prof Sarper Diler from The Nicholas Gonzalez Foundation.
It’s infuriating that commercial medicine fails to acknowledge published evidence that integrative health approaches pioneered by Dr Josef Issels, Dr Max Gerson, Dr William Kelley and Dr Nicholas Gonzalez, among others, are effective at curing people with cancer. The late Dr Gonzalez developed a protocol that succeeds, to this day, in bringing cancer patients – even those with pancreatic cancer – into long-term remission, and we’re lucky to have two advocates from the sharp end of nutrition-based treatment to inspire us with case histories and protocols showing just how powerful “our” methods can be.

In this episode we focus on wheat and brain health, including Alzheimer’s disease, brain fog and depression. Dr. Tom talks us through the immune response to wheat, via toll-like receptor IV and zonulin in the gut, through to the blood brain barrier and glial cell activity in the brain. He explains why it’s not just the gluten in wheat that’s the problem, what to test for, and why declining brain health is the “canary in the coal mine”.
“There has been, between 2013 and 2017, in a four year period - these are the most recent statistics that I can find - there was a 407% increase in the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s in 30 to 44 year olds. Wow. In four years, a 407% increase in 30 to 44 year olds. This is like… can you let that sink in for a minute? What do you think has happened in the last six years now? Since that statistic cameout? Anything changed for the better in terms of air pollution?”

S3 Ep 5: 'Gut Matters: Decoding Bowel Disorders, Emphasizing Nutritional Strategies and Butyrates Role in Gut Health' featuring Edward Dosz, PhD
03 May 2024
00:57:42
Originally broadcast as a webinar on 27 April 2024, Edward Dosz,PhD explains how bowel disorders, including conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Leaky Gut Syndrome, pose significant challenges to individuals’ gastrointestinal health and overall well-being. IBS is characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits, while Leaky Gut involves increased intestinal permeability, potentially leading to systemic inflammation and various symptoms beyond the digestive system.
The causes of these disorders are multifaceted, including genetic predispositions, environmental factors, stress, and dietary triggers. Poor dietary choices, such as diets high in processed foods and low in fibre, can exacerbate symptoms by disrupting gut microbiota balance and intestinal barrier function.
Nutrition is a crucial aspect of managing these conditions, with emerging research highlighting the role of butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid typically produced by gut bacteria. Butyrate plays a pivotal role in maintaining gut integrity, reducing inflammation, and regulating immune responses. Its ability to enhance intestinal barrier function and modulate gut microbiota composition makes it a promising nutritional therapeutic for alleviating symptoms associated with bowel disorders.
Incorporating butyrate-rich foods, such as fibre-rich vegetables and resistant starches, into the diet may help restore gut health and alleviate some of the symptoms of IBS and Leaky Gut Syndrome. Additionally, supplementation with an innovative pre and postbiotic called Bettergut® which generates butyrate regardless of the state of one’s gut health, may offer further therapeutic benefits independent from individual diet or state of the consumers gut microbiome.

S2 Ep 4: 'The microbiome and healthy ageing' featuring Lissa Leader Registered Nutritional Therapist (CNHC), Registered Nutritionist (mBANT)
25 Aug 2023
00:44:17
Lissa Leader is a nutritional therapist, and has her own company – Nutrileader – and also works for Optibac, so is well placed to speak about the microbiome and healthy ageing.
Lissa explains how the gut microbiome keeps changing from birth all the way through childhood and adulthood, and how this can affect a broad range of conditions, including: allergies, digestive health, bone and muscle strength, “inflammaging” and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. We also discuss the very different microbial balance in the urogenital tract, and their potential role in urinary tract infections, thrush and localised tissue health, particularly during menopause.
Lissa then goes on to describe how best to support all of this is a clinical setting, including the pros and cons of a number of dietary factors, and how to choose the right probiotic supplement.
“If we look at, say, the Lactobacillus rhamnosus strains, Lactobacillus rhamnosus have multiple strains, one of which is the GR-1 strain, and the GR-1 strain will adhere to cells in the urogenital tract, whereas the GG strain will actually adhere to cells in the gastrointestinal tract. So we can see that strains can exert completely different effects on the body because that’s where they naturally like to gravitate to and and adhere to.”
