Wow! I didn't Know xAPI Could DO that! with Duncan Welder19 May 202100:49:31

Understanding the basics of xAPI is a hurdle most instructional designers have already crossed over the last few years. We've all been waiting to see xAPI in action. Theory is great but seeing what new innovations can do changes minds and gets projects approved.

If you've still been waiting to SEE it before you can believe it then this episode is the day we make that happen for you.

Duncan Welder has been building xAPI solutions for a very long time and joins us to share a few examples of "xAPI in the wild".
We'll look at a few examples:

Tracking the Mastery of Objectives
Microlearning/Spaced Repetition
xAPI in Games and Simulations
Adaptive Learning
Visualizations for L&D

We hope this conversation will also give you some inspiration to finally jump into the world of xAPI and begin building xAPI-enabled learning solutions.

Duncan Welder is a Director of Client Services for RISC. He is an educational technology geek having spent over 20 years designing and implementing learning management systems, domestically and abroad, to manage regulatory compliance. As an xAPI early adopter, Duncan has worked with companies to leverage xAPI and cmi5 within their learning ecosystems.  Duncan has provided presentations to professional organizations including The eLearning Guild, and the Association for Talent Development.

Successful Strategies for Teleworking Post-pandemic with Tom Spiglanin05 May 202100:45:45

As we begin to see a light at the end of the pandemic shutdown tunnel, let's talk about what we learned about working from home. And also what's next.

Many companies have made bold moves, like announcing continued teleworking options for employees. But those are general announcements for the entire company. In this episode of IDIODC we wanted to talk with the community specifically about how going back to work effects the work we do and the training departments we work in.

Tom Spiglanin, author of "Everyone's Guide to Teleworking", joins us to help us talk through the future ahead. Tom is a friend, and also the only rocket scientist we know working (retired) in training & development. His perspective is unique in many ways, but for our community he has a special connection, and understanding, of the struggles we face as corporate training professionals.

Join us. And bring your stories of success and/or failure from the past 12 months and perhaps even share your plans for the future... if you have them. It's a show you don't want to miss.

Dr. Thomas Spiglanin has been helping people be more effective in the workplace for more than thirty years. As a teleworker himself, he understands how effective communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills underpin success in a digital workplace.

Working predominantly with technical employees for over thirty years in the aerospace industry, and the last few decades in the training field, he saw first hand the value of being able to communicate complex concepts in ways that others can understand. In much the same way digital technologies enabled distanced business communication, Tom saw a steady decline in the very interpersonal skills needed to be effective using those tools.

How to Create Better MicroLearning Videos with LaTarshia Wooten14 Apr 202100:46:50

Microlearning has been a popular topic in the eLearning industry for many years now.  Many people still don't agree on the same definition, but I think it's safe to say that most definition involve 2 elements: Shorter media of any kind, and mostly short videos.  Instead of forcing learners to sit through a training video that is an hour long, target your message and create individually focused, shorter videos instead.

LaTarshia Wooten gave an amazing virtual session at last years online version of DevLearn.  We're very happy to bring her to IDIODC so the community can get to know her as well. She's a motivated practitioner of Learning Experience Design and quickly embracing a growing career.

We'll discuss 5 different methods for creating microlearning videos and the pros and cons of each.

We'll also talk about why microlearning is a trend and what the value is to your business.  Who knows, you may already be creating microlearning and didn't even know it. Join the conversation and find out.

LaTashia is a Learning Experience Designer with a background in communication and educational media. She has four years of experience with programming eLearning courses in Articulate Storyline 360. She also has experience implementing and serving as an administrator on a learning management system as well as programming videos using Vyond and Camtasia. Also, in the last few years, she's had the opportunity to speak at various conferences such as DevLearn and Learning Solutions. She believes that learning should be fun, interactive, and provides value to the learner.

Drink'n'Draw - Creating eLearning Scenario Characters from 3D Apps with Kevin Thorn07 Apr 202100:50:38

Welcome to another Drink'n'Draw with Kevin Thorn on IDIODC. In past episodes we've kept the concepts very basic to help our instructional design colleagues begin to realize their own creative talents. But in this episode we're going to move into the digital world.

Kevin is going to teach us how to create our own eLearning scenario characters from digital versions of the classic figure model. He'll share some of the tools that currently exist, but then we'll dive in and create our own character using a couple different methods.

These are tips and tricks for quickly creating your own characters for your eLearning courses. Of course you can still simply settle for buying the same character libraries that everyone else buys. But what fun is that? These methods will help you create the perfect character for that perfect branching learning scenario. The next time you're building a scenario or simulation and can't find that perfect character/avatar, you'll be armed with the knowledge to create your own.

Join us and let's Drink'n'Draw together!

Kevin is an award-winning eLearning designer & developer, consultant, and owner of NuggetHead Studioz, LLC., a boutique custom design and development studio specializing in online learning experiences.

Evidence-Based Design That Leads to Learning Transfer with Fergal Connolly31 Mar 202100:45:10

What can learning designers, instructional designers, and content developers do to maximize the chance that learning transfer will happen? The design of the learning experience falls squarely on the shoulders of the learning designer. And providing learners with access to training does not guarantee post-training behavior change. Even the most engaging piece of learning content won't inspire a change in the thoughts or actions of learners.

There are many elements that influence learning transfer, and each element must work in harmony for the training to be a success. As a designer of learning, you play an important role in promoting learning transfer. Through the medium of learning design, you can bridge the gap between learning and performance by making it easier for learners to see the connections between training and the work environment. We'll review these evidence-based learning design methods and help you maximize the chances of your learning designs leading to learning transfer.

Fergal is a learning transfer expert who freely shares his evidence-based learning transfer approaches with the learning community. Fergal has worked across the spectrum of L&D in training delivery, learning design, and learning consultancy, and holds an MSc in Education and Training, and a BSc in Psychology. Fergal also hosts Learning Transfer Radio - the only podcast fully focused on turning learning into improved performance. Contact Fergal for speaking engagements, writing opportunities, or learning transfer consultancy by visiting www.fergalconnolly.com.

Visual Design Principles in eLearning When You're Not a Graphic Designer with Rachel Dillon24 Mar 202100:52:54

I don't know how to explain "art". But I know what I like when I see it. I'll bet most of us have felt this way at one point of another. Some practitioners in our field come with a background in graphic design, video production, or general design, but not many. The rest of us have learned how important visual messaging is by studying neuroscience or simply experiencing great instructional design with strong visuals. The bottom line is that visual design is critical to the success of all eLearning projects.

Our guest, Rachel Dillon, reminds us that we often have to take the reins as designers without years of graphic design training. And that professional graphic designers build their design vocab by critiquing each other's work, and as a result they become better designers. So, in this episode, we'll bring this practice of critiquing visual designs and defining design theory together to instructional design.

Rachel Allen Dillon graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1994, with a Bachelor of Science in Art, emphasizing in Graphic Design. She spent over a decade using her design skills in marketing and web design.

In 2009, her non-fiction children’s book, “Through Endangered Eyes – a poetic journey into the wild,” was published by Windward Publishing, an imprint of Finney Company. She both wrote and illustrated it. Her book received an Eric Hoffer Honorable Mention award in 2010. Rachel has been a featured artist in “Wildscape Magazine,” a contributing artist in gallery and museum exhibitions, and a speaker at Art Educator conventions and conferences. The Nature Conservancy commissioned Rachel to produce two paintings for them in 2015.

Rachel taught art and developed the art curriculum at a private elementary school for three years before going back to the corporate world. Her focus shifted to combine her skillset of design and teaching. Since 2017, Rachel works as a full-time senior instructional designer for a global asset manager. She is also an instructor at CSUS-CCE, teaching eLearning Visual Design and Architecture, and Instructional Design 101.

In 2019, Rachel earned her graduate certificate in Instructional Design from the University of California, Irvine. Currently, she is working toward her Masters in Instructional Design & Technology at CSU-Fullerton with a projected graduation date of May 2022. She is working on her thesis to go deeper into the science behind visual design and learning retention and how instructional designers with graphic design foundations create more engaging learning.

What Happens When They Ask for Training and You Deliver a Manual with Jeni Johnson17 Mar 202100:45:42

Creating alternative learning solutions is often the best instructional design choice. But it's rarely what internal stakeholders, customers, clients, ask from you. Trends in performance support like the 5 Moments of Need have been leading the way in alternative learning solutions and yet, a large portion of practitioners still need to create courses.

Jeni Johnson published a short LinkedIn post to highlight part one of her project with an Animal Rescue organization. I was impressed with her enthusiasm to take on ALL the roles for the project. This is very common in our industry and many are hesitant to spend time perfecting their graphic design, writing, editing, photography, and video skills. But it's a perfect opportunity to learn new software as well as take some chances with alternative learning solutions.

Here is the link to her original Linkedin post:
https://www.linkedin.com/posts/jenijohnsoniowa_instructionaldesign-traininganddevelopment-activity-6764645053999702017-np9o

Please join us for this amazing show'n'tell episode with a true renaissance woman.

Jeni is a Senior Instructional Designer with over 15 years of experience with training, instructional design, and eLearning development.

She has taught and designed curriculum in the United States, Germany, Thailand, and Costa Rica and has worked in the public, private and government sectors. In addition to Instructional Design, she has a background in graphic design and media creation. Jeni has a passion for understanding how people learn and creating enriching training experiences. Her love of knowledge began with her first trip to the public library at six years old.

Solve Knowledge and Learning Issues with Organization Enablement with Mike Simmons26 Jul 202300:47:48

We've all heard of Sales Enablement roles. But why is it that only sales teams get special attention enabling them to do their jobs better? Shouldn't we be enabling the entire organization?

One might argue that traditional onboarding and training has that responsibility. But it's not quite the same. Enabling all departments to be successful and productive requires more than what traditional training departments provide. Supporting the moments of need within all departments requires knowledge management, informal learning, social learning, access management, and more.

Mike Simmons joins us to talk about organization enablement and how L&D is uniquely positioned to blend the best of Knowledge Management, Performance Improvement, and Learning & Development into a cohesive solution that enables all employees to be their best and provide the most value to their organizations.

Creating Learner Personas for Better eLearning Experiences with Bianca Baumann10 Mar 202100:42:41

As a corporate training professional it's important to know your learners and understand their work, context, and needs. Yea duh, right?

Maybe, but did anyone ever teach you how to do that when your audience numbers are in the hundreds, thousands, or maybe tens of thousands? Maybe someone showed you early in your career, or maybe you've come from a marketing background or environment.  If so, you've probably heard about User Personas.

Marketers have been using personas for decades to draw a picture of an ideal buyer in order to push the right content at the right time. Instructional designers can use this same approach to create eLearning that is more appropriate for that specific audience.

Jumping into xAPI for the first time can seem daunting. Almost as daunting as learning to become an eLearning game designer. As luck would have it, we've found an eLearning game designer who recently took the plunge into the wonderful world of xAPI and used his knowledge of game design and blend the two as a learning opportunity.

Jeffrey Riley is one of the hundreds of xAPI cohort attendees who decided to no longer lurk and learn, but to jump in with both feet and learn about xAPI by creating a project that connected with his love of game design. He learned all about the xAPI standard, and how to write statements without knowing any code at all. And going through the process he learned more about how to use an LRS and connect it to his LMS. And learning about the data analysis was an added bonus.

Questions to Ask BEFORE Talking about Training with Jeff Kortenbosch17 Feb 202100:45:42

Do you often wonder if training is even necessary? Are you tired of being a department of order takers? What if there was a magic question you could ask stakeholders when they request training that could convince them that training is not the answer?

Actually, there's 20 questions you should ask. And our guest in this episode wrote the book on it. Jeff Kortenbosch has been a successful Learning professional for over 2 decades and has put these questions to the test. And they work.

And if you're wondering why anyone would want to turn away work then you better join us and find out. Just taking on every training request that comes in is not a good strategy for success... for you OR the business. You want to be working on the training solutions with the most business impact, and not just every request that lands in the inbox.

Join us for lively conversation. And don't forget your coffee.

Categorizing the L&D Industry Using Ontologies with Adam Weisblatt20 Jan 202100:43:37

The world of work has changed. Our industry has been changing for many years, but 2020 has placed the spotlight directly on corporate training. Not only did the entire planet move their lives online, but businesses are now being required to report data on Human Capital Management efforts. It's the perfect time for us to talk about the reality of our expanding role within organizations we serve.

In the past we simply built instructional materials for classroom lessons to be taught by trainers/teachers. Today, we produce online learning that is synchronous and asynchronous, job aides, videos, live streams, knowledge bases, infographics, learning ecosystems and so much more.  Some of our colleagues are even being asked to "create a learning culture" within their organizations.  Is that even possible?

In this episode of IDIODC Adam Weisblatt joins us to talk about how we can begin to create this new ontology in a way that is easy to understand.  What we do and how we do it has changed significantly. It's time to redraw that reality so we're all working from the same page.

Adam Weisblatt is a learning strategist and business consultant. As founder of Blank Page Learning LLC, he helps Learning and Development teams become more resilient by analyzing, improving and documenting their processes around using technology. Adam has worked with Pfizer, Factset and Nielsen as well as other companies in diverse industries. He is a cartoonist, puppeteer and dad.

Practical Application of Learning Analytics & Data with Sam Rogers13 Jan 202100:48:56

The concept of Learning Analytics has been a hot topic for several years in the L&D industry. There are those that talk about it, and then there are those doing the work and making it happen within their organizations. Sam Rogers is one of the doers.

He's joining us in this episode to discuss the realities of working with data and analytics within a large enterprise.  As you might imagine, the task is not easy. But each of us needs to start somewhere. The big question is often where. Trying to figure out the proper data to collect and how you will collect can be daunting. But you must start somewhere.

Debunking Myths About Creating Accessible Learning Content with Diane Elkins19 Jul 202300:43:59

Have you asked yourself lately why you don't put a stronger focus on accessibility when creating eLearning content? Oh c'mon, you know you've made excuses why you "can't" do it. We all have at one time or another in our careers. I include myself in that. Here are just a few I'm sure you've used:

  • "Yea, but nobody in our organization has a disability."
  • "Yea, but nobody with a disability could do these particular jobs anyways."
  • "Yea, but it costs more, and we don't have the time to spare."
  • "Yea, but we're not a government agency so we don't really need to worry about it."
  • "Yea, but we make a pdf transcript. That's all we need."

Your "Yea, buts" are no longer valid. Diane Elkins joins us to debunk the common myths and excuses used to avoid creating fully accessible learning experiences. She's an experienced elearning development professional who's been at the helm of Artisan Learning for 20 years. She's heard it all. But more importantly she's discovered successful responses to the "Yea, buts" and created solutions that prove the "yea, but...-ers" (Trademark pending) WRONG.

Stop being a "yea, but...-er"!

The Tall Value of Short Sims with Clark Aldrich18 Nov 202000:49:22

Clark Aldrich is a legend in corporate training simulations and games for learning.  And one of the few experts who can seamlessly move between corporate training issues, academia, and government concerns related to education and learning.  And as far as I know, one of the only training professionals to be quoted by a former US President.

Clark Aldrich is an American author and practitioner in the field of educational and serious games for education and professional skills. He has been the lead designer for several educational simulations, including SimuLearn's Virtual Leader, which won best online training product of the year in 2004 by Training Media Review and the American Society for Training and Development's T+D Magazine - the first game-like product to win.

His published research, beginning in 1999, outlined the failure of formal education approaches to teach leadership, innovation, and other strategic skills, and then advocated interactive experiences borrowing techniques from current computer games as media to fill these gaps. He argues that computer games represent new, "post-linear" models for capturing and representing content, but that new computer game genres will have to be created, optimized for learning as well as entertainment. His research and simulation design work, which he conducted outside of the influence and prescription of academic and grant-giving institutions, resulted in a series of articles, speeches, and 5 books.

Confessions of a Corporate Trainer with Jonathan Halls04 Nov 202000:46:51

Do you train like an improvisational jazz musician or more like the first chair violinist of a symphony orchestra following the music as written?

There is no right or wrong answer to that question but the analogy does reflect what experienced trainers in the classroom understand that many instructional designers do not.  When designing and planning instruction there is a spectrum of flexibility given by designers to those delivering the instruction.

As our guest Jonathan Halls has told me, it's an old conversation but one worth having again. Jonathan is the author of Confessions of Corporate Trainer and joining us for this topic and others that he highlights in his book.

Jonathan Halls is the guy with an accent who can’t stop asking questions about talent development. You’ll hear him talking about talent professionals as organizational superheroes, although he secretly worries that we’re not doing all we can to truly help people transform organizations.  You’ll also hear him predicting tomorrow’s trainers will be as much media producers as a classroom facilitators.

The former BBC learning executive and author of 5 books runs workshops, speaks at conferences, and helps organizations in the areas of evidence-informed learning facilitation, digital learning content, and talent development strategy. Having worked in 25 countries, his first 20 years’ experience were focused on media training and digital transformation in TV and newspapers. His last decade broadened into all sectors including retail, finance, manufacturing, government and non-profit.

Jonathan has worked as a trainer, training manager and head of a multimillion dollar training operation.  This vantage point has him as excited about the future of talent development as he is cynical.  He is author of

Confessions of a Corporate Trainer  (2019), Rapid Video Development for Trainers  (2012), Rapid Media Development for Trainers  (2016), Video Script Writing  (2014), and Memory & Cognition in Learning  (2014).  He has both a masters and bachelors in adult learning.  Before working full-time in talent development, he earned his bread and butter as a journalist, corporate communications manager, and talk show host, but not in that order.

Improving Training Videos Using Neuroscience with Patti Shank12 Jul 202300:46:30

Just because you have the skills to shoot and edit a video doesn't mean it's instructionally sound. This is why some videos are easier to learn from than others. And why that learning sticks. Watching video is a passive experience and therefore you might think there isn't much more to it than just making it more entertaining. Yea, you'd be wrong.

Dr. Patti Shank joins us to discuss some of the mental processing models you can use to your advantage when producing videos. She's taught us all how to become better multiple-choice question writers with a scientific approach, and now she's applying that same researched-based rigor to producing better training videos. She reads ALL the research so we don't have too.

Join us for another IDIODC with Patti as she continues to help the L&D community apply the research to all that we do. Save your spot today!

Performance-based Instructional Analysis with Guy Wallace30 Sep 202000:50:06

Guy Wallace is our guest this week. He's an experienced L&D professional sharing his successful process in "Conducting performance-based Instructional Analysis".  His latest book presents a "how to" approach to his ISD efforts using methods first learned in 1979 and has been using in consulting gigs since 1982. His approach is "framed" as: MCD - Modular Curriculum Development/Acquisition. He uses it for detailed project planning - and mostly "fixed-fee" pricing. It was first published in the late 1980s in his firm's quarterly newsletter.

We're really excited to have him sharing his knowledge and framework with the IDIODC community.

Improve Learning Outcomes using Laughter with Christee Atwood09 Sep 202000:39:33

The emotional state of your learners has a big impact on your success as an instructor. How you make them feel may not seem important but it is. And I'm pretty sure there is neuroscience research to support that claim. Even if there isn't, who doesn't like to laugh and have fun while they're learning?

We're excited to have Christee Atwood as our guest helping us link laughter and learning. But that's not all. We'll also discuss how to produce successful online virtual training sessions when the audience is skeptical and not very motivated to participate. She'll share a broad range of experiences in corporate training that are sure to tickle your funny bone.

"I am the author of 14 books, and counting. I have presented programs from Texas to Tokyo, California to the Caribbean And I've never been hit by a rotten tomato yet. That either means I'm doing well, or that people have more respect for rotting produce than they used to.

I write books on business and training topics, as well as humorous books, and occasionally the two overlap." - Christee Atwood

What’s the P in PLN? With Tricia Ransom #IDIODC08 Jul 202000:50:01

It’s like that movie theme song said: When there’s something strange in your elearning ‘hood, who you gonna call? P-L-N!! The past few months have been strange for so many of us in both our work and our personal day-to-day lives. How have you been coping? How have you been able to meet new challenges? In this hyper-connected world, the odds are you’ve had some help along the way whether that’s from colleagues on your own team or the folks you’re connected with on social media – your Personal Learning Network or PLN for short. This week we’ll be talking PLNs with guest Tricia Ransom.

Tricia has been working in the L&D world for 15+ years in many different organizations. And no matter how much things change, she says her PLN is easily the most important tool she has in her L&D toolkit. So while Brent’s on vacation, Chris and Tricia will talk PLNs – how they’ve helped her, how you can build your own, and what the P really stands for. (Can you guess?) Tricia Ransom is currently an instructional designer at Uber where she designs and develops relevant training. With over 15 years of experience as an L&D consultant, eLearning developer, instructional designer, and facilitator, Tricia focuses on creating short, relevant, and social learning solutions. She holds a master’s degree in training and development from Roosevelt University in Chicago.

Using AI to Supercharge Training Team Productivity with Myra Roldan05 Jul 202300:45:19

AI is the hottest topic in L&D since Learning2.0. It's even hotter than Virtual Reality. Why? Because it's something everyone can use and doesn't require additional hardware expenses.  And more importantly, when used creatively, AI apps can supercharge your individual productivity. But if you're a manager/director of an L&D or Training department, you need to build your knowledge of these tools as well. They are changing how your team will work and support stakeholders.

Myra Roldan, AWS Sr. Technical Program Manager, joins us to talk about the many solutions and productivity hacks she's discovered while experimenting with AI apps. She'll talk about building AI generated content, but also how she's generated more complex solutions like knowledge bases. She's even used AI to generate her own app that generates instructional objectives. The future of AI is here now.

If you follow Myra on social media you may have already seen these demos, but if you're like me, her videos sparked even more questions. Bring your own questions and curiosity to this episode and join the always active chat room. And bring your manager, and your manager's manager. This technology, more than any other, is changing rapidly the way we work and improve performance.

Corporate Podcasting With Evo Terra #IDIODC03 Jun 202000:44:28

Do you listen to podcasts? If so, you may have wondered how you might leverage the podcasting format as part of your learning solutions within your company. Oh, you haven't had that thought? Why not?

Podcasting is more than just digital versions of news programs or repurposed comedy shows. Podcasting is an amazing way to deliver audio content in a format that is easy to access and available to all employees with a computer or mobile device. In fact, it's a great vehicle for delivering learning content. Internal corporate podcasts are beginning to grow in popularity.

This week we have an amazing guest to talk with us about the power of podcasting. Evo Terra, also known as Pod Yoda has a long history with podcasting and one of the earliest producers and advocates of the format. He also has the distinction of being the first IDIODC guest with a Wikipedia Page. Join us for a what I know will be a highly informative conversation about corporate podcasting... and learning.

"I'm incessantly curious, risk tolerant, and not afraid to ask the hard questions. But I'm also a pragmatist and seasoned biz ops professional. I'm the contrarian voice that invents solid practices where needed; the champion of change and innovation with a keen eye on the balance sheet. And I know how to inject confidence into under-appreciated team of good people doing good work.

I embraced the web when it was young, dragging a multi-billion dollar company along with me as they kicked and screamed all the way to the bank. I’m among the first dozens of podcasters, where there are now nearly a million. I've lead teams of innovators, presented to thousands of people around the world, have authored 2.5 books in the “for Dummies” series, and continue to push the envelope of media and technology."" - Evo Terra

Learner Experience Design: A New Perspective on Design Thinking for Instructional Designers With Sharon Boller #IDIODC27 May 202000:44:28

The new book "Design Thinking for Training and Development" offers a primer on design thinking, a human-centered process and problem-solving methodology that focuses on involving users of a solution in its design. For effective design thinking, talent development professionals need to go beyond the UX, the user experience, and incorporate the LX, the learner experience.

The author Sharon Boller joins us for a conversation on learner experience design and shares some practical case studies that have successfully implemented an LX strategy.

"I joined TiER1 Performance in 2019 after selling Bottom-Line Performance to them. BLP was incorporated by my husband and me in 1999. Our focus was on “the right learning solution,” and we grew the company to a $4M+ company over the span of 20 years. In 2019, in a desire to expand both capabilities and capacity, we joined forces with TiER1, whose focus is “strategy activation through people.” In addition to L&D solutions, they focus more broadly on talent development, change management, strategic communications, and mergers and acquisitions." - Sharon Boller
