Origins of Speed The Coach Who Invented the modern NBA 🏀

vendredi 19 décembre 2025Durée 17:14

Send us Fan Mail

The NBA is faster than ever. Data shows players are running further and faster than at any point in history. But where did this obsession with speed come from?

It started with a "jailbreak." In an era of peach baskets and standing still, Coach John B. McLendon introduced a radical system: press, run, and shoot in under 8 seconds.

In this Episode

  • How the 1944 "Secret Game" (88-44 score) foreshadowed the high-scoring blowouts of the modern NBA.
  • Why McLendon's "full court pressure" philosophy is the ancestor of today's defensive schemes.
  • The direct link between a 1940s "lab" in Durham and the fast-paced highlights you watch on your phone today.

Speed isn't new. It was just waiting for the world to catch up.

What happens when you mix Philly basketball angst, touring-musician coffee rituals, and the creative spirit of The War on Drugs?
In this episode, bassist Dave Hartley dives into all of it — from Joel Embiid’s emotional truth to the cultural roots of Drugcember to Remember, to how he balances his band life with his solo project, Nightlands.

We kick things off with coffee talk — pour-overs, strange co-ferment experiments, and why musicians obsess over brewing rituals while touring the world.

And of course… we go deep on the Sixers, the emotional rollercoaster of Philly fandom, the youth movement, Embiid’s complicated greatness, OKC’s rise, the Eastern Conference chaos, and what it means to root for a team that is equal parts hope and heartbreak.

When Transferring Meant Sacrifice | Iconic College Basketball Transfers That Changed the Game

mercredi 2 juillet 2025Durée 15:48

Send us Fan Mail

In this episode of Iconic Seasons, host Aaron Meyer takes you back to an era when transferring in college basketball wasn’t easy — it was a sacrifice. Before the transfer portal and NIL deals, switching schools meant sitting out an entire year, risking momentum, and betting on yourself.

Aaron shares personal reflections — including a surprising moment when he couldn’t recognize a single IU player at a Chipotle in Bloomington — and dives deep into the unforgettable transfer stories of Jason Williams, Ed O’Bannon, Hank Gathers, Felipe López, and Marcus Fizer.

You’ll hear about:

🏀 Jason Williams giving up a season to follow Billy Donovan to Florida.

🏀 Ed O’Bannon leaving UNLV’s wreckage to become a UCLA champion — and later, an NCAA reformer.

🏀 Hank Gathers’ heartbreaking, inspirational run at Loyola Marymount.

🏀 The weight Felipe López carried for New York City hoops.

🏀 Marcus Fizer’s rise from uncertainty to Big 12 dominance.

👂 What do you think? Is today’s transfer era bad… or just different? Share your thoughts in the comments!
