How I Wrote A Great Song in 25 Minutes for Acuna, and How You Can Too! 04 Mar 202400:39:17

It’s not every day that songs fall out of us like divine gifts, but today was one of them. I’ve been working with Acuna, from Brazil for a number of years now. He’s a fantastic underground Drum and Bass DJ/Producer.

We’ve been trying to find time to work on more projects together and he sent me a track just before I made my way out to LA at the start of this year.

We often talk about setting aside time in order to write songs, so that’s just what I did. I didn’t plan to write the song this quickly but when given strict boundaries it’s funny how our creative brains can work.

In this episode I take you behind the scenes of what happens when I write top lines and I dive into the details of how I like to go about the creative process. We talk lyrics, structure, imagery, melodies and I stumble across something pretty cool regarding how I like to write melody.

Sending love from Mexico as I post this!

  • Why you should be putting this tool into practice if you want to start crafting better songs today.
  • How you are already very familiar with this tool as you have been listening to it for as long as you've been listening to popular music.
  • How you can use melodic contrasting to take your ‘shower songs’ and turn them into effective, emotive bangers!

Jantine - Part 213 May 202200:41:58

Today, Callum and Jamie continue their chat with Jantine Annika Heij. Jantine is a songwriter from the Netherlands who has worked with Skrillex, Hardwell, Exo, NCT 127, Rock Mafia, and released songs on Spinnin' Records, Universal Music Group, SM Entertainment and more.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • How even published writers have days when they think about throwing in the songwriting towel and why self doubt is NO EXCUSE not to write.
  • Why it's a good idea to learn at least some music theory if you want to empower yourself as a songwriter.
  • What to expect from a music publisher, how to nurture relationships, as well as building a team of people you LOVE working with.
  • Why it's important to know when you can't contribute anything more to a writing session and it's time to say "goodbye" and leave.
  • Why it's important to have a side hustle as it will be a 'slow burn' for most songwriters, and you must be prepared to NOT make a living off songwriting alone.

Ed Graves - Part 122 Dec 202100:44:42

In this episode, Callum and Jamie go in-depth with producer, top-liner, artist, music business mogul and mastermind behind Rainbow Wood Studios, Mr. Ed Graves.

Ed has written with and produced the likes of Liz Cass, Hot Since 82, Jantine, Second City, Twin Lee, Take a Day Trip and has opened for the likes of Maroon 5 and Journey. If we tried to list all of the writers and producers Ed has worked with, this podcast would need a new server.

Ed is the founder and spirit animal of Rainbow Wood Studios in Bath, UK.

He is living proof that if you take the time to build something special, people will come. Most songwriter-producers manage the miracle of attracting talent to their studio through marketing and quick thinking alone, not only has Ed been capable of doing this, but he has a funny knack of seeking out the best to join his team at Rainbow Wood. Believe us this is a space to watch...

Last week's special guest Jodie Brunning says Ed is going places so you would do well to listen up.

In this episode you'll discover;

  • How Ed brings the best out of artists and writers when he is crafting his productions.
  • Why it's important you understand the details of music law and business.
  • The importance of putting yourself out there and investing in being in the right place for your career.
  • How you can find sliver linings in your darkest hour and why the relationships you have are EVERYTHING.

From Bath to Boston to NYC, Ed has not been resting on his laurels.
