Physical Media in 2025: Why It's Important and Where to Start for Movie Lovers

Épisode 50

samedi 22 février 2025Durée 01:29:01

Cinephiles, rebuke a life of zeroes and ones. What a time to be alive! From boutique blu-rays, to all of the publishers putting together collectable editions of your favorite films in VHS, DVDs, Blurays, and our beloved 4k UHD- we are eating!

Nostalgia isn't just a river in Egypt, JT and I believe there is more at play here than merely missing the 90s with all of it's glamor and Blockbusters. We explore the importance of physical media in the age of streaming, talk about examples of movies that only exist in physical form, plus we list all of the advantages physical media has over it's digital counterparts- and it's just not quality!

We also discuss what does it mean to truly own a movie, and how important tangibility is, plus the actual act of displaying a piece of yourself on the shelves to enjoy, for others to enjoy, and how special and communal the process is of physically selecting a film journey to embark on, not just scrolling the algo.

We also list our TOP 10 Blurays, DVDs, VHS, and 4k UHD films, don't miss it!

Also, if you are interested in starting to collect physical media, we discuss some of our favorite places to shop! From Vinegar Syndrome to Criterion Channel, Shout Factory to Kino Lorber, and ending at our beloved Goodwill Store. Plus, tips and tricks to build your physical movie collection on the cheap! And I drool over my Second Sight Films 'Session 9' collectors edition!

You may never spend another Friday night in a Hollywood Video sifting through the beautiful cover art in the horror section, snagging a soda on your way out to go have the night of your life. BUT, you can sift through your own collection with your significant other and still create a night you won't forget, letting a movie from your self convince you to take the journey through its incredible art work on the front, and intriguing copy on the back.

The state of movie collecting has never been better, let us convince you to nerd out and start collecting physical media too! Now go watch some movies, because we can promise you... we watch, AND collect, more movies than you!

If you have enjoyed our company, as we have yours, please consider leaving us a 5-star review and sharing us with your people! We are all movie people, let's live the dream!

The American Pipe Dream: The Brutalist, Memoir of a Snail, Eraserhead

Épisode 49

jeudi 30 janvier 2025Durée 01:07:30

Brady Corbet's 'The Brutalist' is up first as we explore the connective tissue throughout these three films, what if the American dream is rotten? Starring Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, and the always amazing Guy Pearce, we dive deep into a movie that is sure to create Oscar buzz as it competes for the 2025 Oscar's Best Picture! Do NOT miss this coming to America mini-epic (thanks Sean Fennessey from The Big Picture) that is in theaters, including IMAX, and available VOD now!

The Brutalist (2024) is a film to be contended with for years to come, please give it a watch and us a listen and let's take a journey from war-torn Hungary, as the Third Reich marches and destroys, all the way to America as we examine what it means to come here to be free and if that promise is there for all.

Up next, from the director of Mary and Max, we have Adam Elliot's 'Memoir of a Snail.' Another 97th Academy Award nominee, Best Animation, we have the latest installment in the moody stop-motion Claymation genre- and we are here for it! Memoir of a Snail will take you on a journey through a range of emotions ,tears of sadness, joy, the macabre, and the hopeful. Watch this picture, listen to us discuss, and please let us know in a hopeful 5-star review your thoughts on this artistic, dare we say.. masterpiece?

Last but certainly not least, let's show more love and remembrance to the great auteur and artist, David Lynch! We dive deep into the nightmare of the surrealist madman himself in David Lynch's first feature length movie, 'Eraserhead' (1977)! Twin Peak's Jack Nance is our vehicle through the nightmarish anti-reality of this cold and disturbing world as we experience Lynch's most spiritual film ever, Eraserhead. We journey through this hellscape and try to decipher what this moving painting David Lynch felt compelled to share means to us. From the almost alien creature of a newborn, capturing the angst of new parenthood in such a beautiful and horrifying way, to the almost caricature and archetypal ladies that inhabit this hellish plane of (non)existence, we are given a truly dark and fantastically macabre fairy tale ripe for interpretation and amazement. Watch Eraserhead and listen to us discuss and even make some wild connections to Lynch's other work... the black lodge anyone?!

We had a blast discussing these incredible and unique films, and hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did! Let's get weird! Please consider the amazing help of leaving a 5-star review and sharing our podcast with friends and thick mothers- we appreciate you more than you'll ever know!

See you at the movies, freaks!

'Frogman,' 'Monkey Man,' 'Late Night with the Devil,' and 'The Night of the Hunter' + Hollywood Remakes Discussion

Épisode 36

jeudi 11 avril 2024Durée 01:17:28

Frogman (2023), Monkey Man (2024), Late Night with the Devil (2023), and the haunting The Night of the Hunter (1955) all get covered on this episode of I Watch More Movies Than You! We have four movie reviews this week, all spoiler free except for the deep dive into what is regarded as the greatest American film of all time, The Night of the Hunter.

Frogman is the latest found footage cryptic film to be circulating the interwebs, and we couldn't be more stoked to have watched this flick and now get to share our thoughts on it, the found footage genre, and cryptids- FUN!

Monkey Man was saved by the great Jordan Peele from Netflix obscurity and now graces our silver screens! Dev Patel's directorial debut is one you do NOT want to miss, so go ahead and hit play and let Bobby walk you through a spoiler free review of the latest stylized revenge action picture that will leave you HYPED!

Late Night with the Devil is up next, directed by Cameron and Colin Cairnes and starring the lovable Mr. David Dastmalchian as a younger Johnny Carson on a Halloween night in 1977. This movie is is entirely a late night show from the 70s and we are dropped in on a host who's past is dripped in tragedy, his ratings are falling, and he needs one gigantic, unforgettable night to launch him back to stardom. The question is, would you trade your soul!?  Seriously, give our review a listen and then go watch this film ASAP- you have never seen anything like it. HORROR IS THRIVING!

Last but CERTAINLY not least, Charles Laughton's only directorial attempt ever, The Night of the Hunter. Starring robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters, and the silent-film star Lillian Gish, you are dropped in on an incredibly charismatic self-proclaimed preacher and one of the most haunting stories you shall ever encounter. Unforgettable photography, too dark of a story for the era it released, and a heavily German Expressionism styled film that all are woven together to create a child's nightmare, but a cinematic masterpiece.  Come with us as we journey through it and decide whether or not we believe this film to be worthy of the title of the greatest American movie of all time, and the tragedy that was the director never got his flowers this side of the grave.

We also briefly discuss Hollywood remakes, in light of Scott Derrickson and writing partner Robert Cargill taking on the gargantuan task of remaking The Night of the Hunter. I BELIEVE IN THEM! Comment with a 5-star review the best remake that you believe has ever been made!

And if you enjoyed spending time with us and watching movies, would you care to leave us a SMASHING 5-star REVIEW?! We'd greatly appreciate it, and we greatly appreciate YOU, film lovers!

A warm hug on a winter night, The Holdovers. We start this episode off with The Holdovers, an incredibly human story that we rarely get in the theaters nowadays. Directed by Alaxander Payne and starring Paul Giamatti, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and introduces us to Dominic Sessa, The Holdovers is the PERFECT Christmas and winter watch that will etch its way into so many Christmas film rotations. But this movie is so much more than that, it is a heartfelt coming together of such a loveable cast of characters, from the grumpy old school teacher that has reached a stasis in life, to the heartbroken cafeteria lady that is struggling to move on, all the way to the foolhardly high school kid that is the absolute antithesis to the professor. This movie has it all, from unforgettable performances to a beautiful soundtrack, and Christmas card cinematography that transports you to New England underneath a blanket of snow and intrigue. The talk of cinema town, Saltburn! We have two very different opinions and battle them out in our spoiler free review of Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi's latest film! Emerald Fennell is talented behind the camera, and Rosamund Pike is spellbounding, but where do we finally land on the IT movie of the moment!? Listen and find out!

An absolute gem was released at the end of the year on Netflix, but not enough people are discussing it- don't let this film pass you by! May December! Todd Haynes is back with another polarizing melodrama, this time s tarring Natalie Portman, Charles Melton, and the always incredible Julianna Moore who gives potentially the performance of the year. This is a complicated story based on an actual tragedy, but leave our assumptions at the door because May December and it's incredible score and beautiful Tybee Island backdrop paint a picture for you that will leave you mesmerized, exasperated, and in dark contemplation. This movie is a summer dream, but given to us in December- do not miss it!

Last but CERTAINLY not least- GODZILLA MINUS ONE! Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, starring Minami Hamabe, Ryunosuke Kamiki, and Sakura Ando, Godzilla Minus One is a force to be reckoned with.
