S14 E10: Neeraj Kane11 Apr 202501:16:25

I remember starting an Arts Lab a few years ago – just before Covid started actually - with a group of people here in London, based roughly around the counter-culture arts labs of the 1960’s – Jim Haynes was the main guy behind that movement. The idea was to bring together people who wanted to challenge the corporitisation of the arts, draw, socialise, talk about culture, put on cultural events or fuck around.

I wanted to be a part of it but I didn’t know why. I mean had terrible insecurities about my ability to draw, sketch or paint…even as a classically trained cellist I had terrible imposter syndrome about being a musician. Probably explains why I petulantly packed it in…

At the first Arts Lab meeting, It was Youth from Killing Joke who said something that has always stuck with me and that was “the first thing you need to do is call yourself an artist, forget everything else”. I struggled with this – particularly with the whole identity of who I was. I certainly didn’t feel like a creative. Even now doing my own graphic design, I feel like a bit of a fake – especially when I compare myself to others - but I am getting better.

Of course, Youth was right. Allowing yourself that self-affirmation is really the start of your self-belief journey.

Neeraj Kane is so synonymous with, and important to, the hardcore scene and I was excited to find out if he has faced these issues and how he has navigated them through his life.

His musical footprint can’t be overstated. Every band he’s been in - like The Hope Conspiracy, The Suicide File, Hesitation Wounds, Godcollider - has produced music that is so incredibly potent and addictive in its structure and melody and the absolute precision of its attack.

S14 E1: Kishi Bashi04 Oct 202400:48:42

As someone who has played the cello in my much more youthful days and is ineffectively trying to resurrect past glory, I fully appreciate Kishi Bashi's love of the violin and the way he uses that instrument in his compositions. You can literally hear it cascading through every release he has done – from the Room for Dream EP to the epic music and soundtrack for his film Omoiyari.

He is an epic multi-hyphenate - songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist, film maker, father, husband who has used his creativity, his energy and whole being to produce art that, well, makes you pay attention through the exquisiteness and purity of the songwriting and its humanity.

There have been so many things that have fascinated me, intrigued me, filled me with respect and admiration, not least the ever-present authenticity in his work but also how that work conjures such strong emotions in me. Even though I find myself getting emotional at the smallest things these days – it’s getting ridiculous quite frankly – and even more so with some of the horrific acts of prejudice, greed and narcissism that structurally pervade our society - there are still only a few songwriters that can do this.

Now, he’s back with what I think is his musically most diverse (and that’s saying something) LP to follow up the stunning Omoiyari. It’s called Kantos and it was really exciting to hear about it all and to delve into some of the mindset topics that I’ve noticed present in his work, like emotional intelligence, curiosity, resilience and adaptability.

S4 E10: Raymond Ahn15 Nov 202100:57:29

What a fabulous way to end a fabulous Season 4 with Ray Ahn, co-founder of one of my favourite bands of all time - The Hard-Ons.

In this fantastic episode, when Ray's not humming Ferry 'Cross the Mersey, we're talking about playing Liverpool (I was there!), Dave Grohl, what drew him to punk, what living with freedom means, the importance of truth, friendships, taking risks, gut instinct and not worrying about what people think of you.

Thank you Ray, this was so memorable for me.

(if you didn't know already, the Hard-Ons are back with a new record, magnificently called “I’m Sorry Sir, That Riff’s Taken”)

About Ray and the Hard-Ons:

If not Australia’s most successful independent band, they are certainly the most influential. And they remain resolutely underground, DIY and bloody fantastic.

Along with Blackie (Peter Black), Ray is one of the original members and bass player with the band as well as the fella responsible for the band’s very distinctive artwork.

He released a book of around 750 pieces of his wonderfully subversive art in What I did during my School holidays and also one covering his Comic Book art. They’re available from all good book stores. And some not so good ones too I imagine. And probably from Ray as well.

He also formed Nunchukka Superfly, which is a much more avant garde, psychedelic wig out combo, and has written some very amusing blog posts – the ones about the ”punk pastry chef “ whipping up a magical $100 dessert, the shirt tucker and the case of mistaken Smashing Pumpkins identity are slabs of comedy gold from a highly talented curmudgeon

A few years ago, when asked what to expect from a new Hard-ons album, he said “Tons of melody – concise but exciting tunes played very well by old idiots”

S4 E9: Kelsey Warren08 Nov 202101:02:08

Bringing different influences, ideas and ways of working together is one of the most exciting and satisfying way to live your life and grow as a person.  I think this also goes for creating music - take Bowie, Zappa, Nina Simone, Prince, Led Zep, Little Simz, Miles Davis, Hendrix, Tina Turner. We've also seen it with many of my guests here.

Kelsey Warren is a proponent of this way of living and creating. I hugely admire his curiosity, open mindedness and drive to use his immense talent and expansive influences to constantly evolve and overcome the fear of stepping out of the constraining boxes that society likes to impose and breaking new ground.

Kelsey's latest project is Blak Emoji, who have just released Eclectro - and this is again something that I love - a record that breaks boundaries, genres and pigeonholes. Kelsey has quite rightly received a variety of accolades from notable publications including Rolling Stone, Clash, Afro-Punk, Line Of Best Fit, BUST, Popmuzik, Vampire Freaks and Ghost Cult Magazine.

Thanks for an inspiring conversation, Kelsey!

S4 E8: Richard Norris01 Nov 202101:12:32

It’s hard to overstate the influence that Richard Norris has had on the music industry over the past 40 years.

In his youth in St Albans, Richard got involved in the experimental and creative punk rock scene, forming the Innocent Vicars, creating a DIY fanzine called 99%, working as a label manager for Bam Caruso and writing for Strange Things and the NME. Following a, let's say, "educational" collaboration with Genesis P. Orridge, Richard formed The Grid with Dave Ball (from Soft Cell) in 1988 and released their debut single, the Balearic-inspired Floatation in 1990. It was their 1994 single, Swamp Thing with the inspired banjo reel that catapulted the band to commercial success.

Richard has been at the front of the ever-evolving electronic scene, from the early days of Shoom and The Clink, to covering the emergence of Amnesia in Ibiza, to releasing his own house, acid house, ambient, meditative, drone and psychedelic tracks. He's worked with Joe Strummer, has run record labels, DJ'd, wrote Paul Oakenfold’s official biography and remixed and produced artists like Armand van Helden, Soft Cell, Saint Etienne, Cornershop, Billie Ray Martin, Shakespeare's Sister and has collaborated on the experimental project Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve with Erol Alkan. The list is almost endless!

Recently, he has been doing his own thing - releasing a series of totally hypnotic, ambient, healing experiences, raising money for MIND. And latterly he released Hypnotic Response, a more psychedelic, experimental set of tracks.

There's more exciting stuff in the works….take a listen to the wonderful mindset of one of music's legends.

S4 E7: Dimitri Coats25 Oct 202101:15:29

Having been hired to produce a Circle Jerks record that never happened, Dimitri Coats developed a strong bond with Keith Morris (Black Flag, Circle Jerks) and, hey, waddyaknow…...OFF! was born.

Formerly a drama student and actor, Dimitri's musical background is in classic hard rock with Burning Brides, so OFF! was something way different for him. He took on lead guitar,  learned the art of downstrokes, songwriting, production and band management duties and here we are - one of the most thrilling bands around.

It was totally engrossing talking to Dimitri about deep stuff like:

- the importance of emotional intelligence in today's world
- adaptability
- the excitement of improvising and getting weird in the studio
- how he continues to push himself out of his comfort zone,
- how he and his bandmates -  Keith, Justin and Autrey - thrive off each other's growth mindsets to experiment, do things differently and improve collectively and individually.

"Keith is making some of the most relevant music of his life - right now. We've really entered into a unique phase for a band like us"

2022 promises to be a defining year for OFF!

S4 E6: Kira Roessler18 Oct 202100:59:49

Kira Roessler joined Black Flag in 1984 at what was possibly the most polarising point in the band’s career.

They had just released the game changing My War and were going on an extensive tour to promote the record. The band had moved away from the ferocious assault of Damaged and was venturing into songs that were much more experimental and freeform, yet still retaining the relentless intensity. The punk rock community were ironically divided at this non-conformist change of direction.

Although her time in Black Flag was a hugely important and formative  part of Kira’s story, it's one part of her life and there is much, much more to tell.

Whilst on the road and in the studio, she was studying Economics/System Science at UCLA which she then used to help create a career in post production and dialogue editing – she has won 2 Emmy’s as a dialogue editor and been part of Oscar winning sound editing teams (Mad Max Fury Road). She has also been writing and playing music intermittently with another immensely innovative bass player, Mike Watt, as dos…..

Now, and very excitingly, she is about to release her first solo album called, quite simply…..Kira: ten tracks of beautifully sculpted, innovative musicianship and personal expression that reveal her exquisite bass and vocals.

I'm so grateful to Kira for such an open and fascinating conversation about formative influences, identity, fears, experimentation, non-conformism, vulnerabilities, anxieties and how we live and work in a volatile and complex world.

S4 E5: Estella Adeyeri11 Oct 202101:00:21

Aside from her life as a fabulous multi-instrumentalist - bassist in Big Joanie, guitarist in Charmpit, drummer in the enigmatic Dirty Girl and solo synthesiserist (I just made that word up) - Estella Adeyeri is building communities and networks that are about providing opportunities and voices for the many, not just the few:

She is a member of the team behind Decolonise Fest, an incredible music festival organised by and for punx of colour, she's a board member of Good Night Out Campaign which is  all about safety on nights out, free from sexual harassment and violence, she volunteers at Girls Rock London which provides development and support for young and adult women, trans and nonbinary people.

Oh, and she's also a fantastic DJ.

Doesn't leave much time for Netflix….. 😎

There is a lot that we can all learn from Estella's perspectives and what really struck me was her growth mindset: she's a collaborator; she's getting more comfortable with taking risks despite her own tendency to be a perfectionist; she's experimenting with new ways of working with sounds and people and she is always learning from herself and from others.

S4 E4: Jason Reece04 Oct 202100:39:54

For the last 25 years, Jason Reece has been producing an outstanding stream of expansive, cinematic, experimental records that have kept fans excited, looking forwards and on their toes. His approach to music is that history never repeats itself (although y'know, hardcore side projects are kinda not to be trifled with 🤐) .

He plays guitar, sings and hits the drums with ferocious precision.

His band, And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, are in equal parts abrasive, thrilling, psychedelic, soaring, vulnerable, brooding and have an incredibly sophisticated eye for melody.

Each album is a magnus opus and each song is its own magnus opus. Put the lights off, switch your phone off and let yourself fall into your own personal odyssey.

S4 E3: Alton Jenkins20 Sep 202100:59:54

Alton Jenkins is a powerhouse of a drummer. A massively inventive, unique, avant garde, experimental, punk rock, psychedelic, melodic percussionist noisemaker and a lynchpin of that very creative and experimental Austin scene.

Having been in Future Death (wow, you really should check them out), he’s now working with the incredible TaSz Muerte of BLXPLTN (who you will remember from Season 1) on a new project which is excitingly called……. Fuck Money.

Alton is fusing lots of different elements to create music that really can’t be put in a box and many will be bored with me saying this, but hey, this is where the really exciting stuff is happening.

It's an honour to talk to Alton and to listen to his fabulously thoughtful and progressive world view.

S4 E2: Kirsty Allison13 Sep 202101:03:37

"The greatest cultural beacon this planet has produced” - Irvine Welsh

"A modern day Patti Smith" - Johny Brown, Band of Holy Joy

Kirsty's work explores the power of the free individual, unconstrained by straitjacket of institutionalised, homogenised culture. She is the chief editor of the great counter culture bastion, Ambit and founded Cold Lips and the Vagrant Lovers. She is also a huge literary contributor to MÜ Magazine. She spends her time in London and Berlin.

Her first novel, Psychomachia, is an unputdownable tale of the REAL '90's rock n roll scene, told through the eyes of Scarlett Flagg, a woman brutalised by an era where sexual violence, money and fame at all costs and impenetrable patriarchal cronyism roamed free and unencumbered to lure, screw over and jettison women. It's a fabulous, very personal and emotional read.

Confrontational, visceral, a hugely progressive thinker and always one step ahead of the rest of us, I feel very honoured to have Kirsty on the podcast.

S4 E1: Donald Johnson06 Sep 202101:24:08

Is there a better way to kick off Season 4, than with Donald Johnson, the rhythm-and-beats maestro of A Certain Ratio?

This episode has bags of laughs and stories. It's also a compelling masterclass in the power of the experimental mindset and the extraordinary journey that it can take you on in life. Curiosity, adaptability, mental agility, trusting one's own judgement, strong relationships, imagination, open mindedness, resourcefulness, accepting and understanding, collaborative - I'm struck by how these are the essence of Donald's mindset.

A Certain Ratio are one of the few pioneers and innovators that not only survived, but thrived in the aftermath of punk. For me, it’s their individual and collective experimental approach to creativity that’s at the heart of this and, as Donald puts it, their fear of being boring that pushes them to a different level. And they're still pushing the boundaries 40 years after forming.

In short, it was a joy and an honour!

S13 E10: Neil Cowley23 Sep 202400:54:45

I’ve long thought about our individual persona or personas and this idea of ever evolving identities …for example, people who have work and non-work personas: the arsehole in work, nice as pie out of work; the surprising competitive aggression at the work social bowling alley do, the extroverted party goer (ok, so there might be some substance impact for that one) – kinda like Henry the mild mannered janitor morphing into Hong Kong Phooey (does anyone remembers that show?!)

What does this mean for the authentic you? Who actually are you?

I think I’ve come to the conclusion that the times I’ve felt uncomfortable with the way I was behaving, was more to do with dissatisfaction with the environment and company I was keeping rather than myself and my identities, so eventually I’ve taken action to change them.

This led me to start thinking about why, for example, institutions, companies, communities, social networks seem to exhibit their own personality and employees, members or whatever can start to take on that personality and behaviours, which might be at loggerheads with their own individuality. How malleable is our individuality? How do we unearth that authenticity, when we strip away the masks and show ourselves devoid of external influences?

And do these scenarios exist in bands? And especially in artistic or creative collaborations, which is really the very essence of individuality coming together, how do we as collaborators come together to achieve common goals?

Neil Cowley has just released his first record (although it hadn't been released when we recorded this) with his two longstanding friends and cohorts who had so much acclaim as The Neil Cowley Trio prior to its hiatus 7 years ago. Their reunion and reconnection, and the making of this record, perhaps provides some answers to my most mind churning questions!

S3 E10: Colleen Green30 Aug 202100:46:50

To round off Season 3 (yeah, I know!), we've got the fabulous Colleen Green.

BREAKING NEWS: Colleen reveals all about what this means: ”Did I ever send your shirt? I think I did. But maybe I didn’t. Sorry 'bout that”.

Ah, seriously, Colleen is one of my fave artists. A natural born songwriter with the lo-fi buzz of The Strokes, the glorious three-power chord cool of Ramones and the effortless melodies of Veronica Falls. Her songs are funny yet intensely personal stories of her journey to become the best version of herself, a theme continued on her new record, Cool (to be released on 10 September 2021 and the follow up to 2015's I Want To Grow Up).

Colleen has been living with an auto-immune condition since she was 24. I feel fatuous saying that this has changed her life - of course it has.

Her thoughtfulness, humility, gratitude and resilience are hallmarks of her warm personality. She has made these changes work for her, not against her.

Colleen's analogy of a phoenix is a vivid reminder of how our survival is often outside our control.  I'm grateful that she talks so openly about it.

S3 E9: AY Young23 Aug 202100:50:25

AY Young is a producer, singer, songwriter, entertainer, and entrepreneur.

He is also the founder of the Battery Tour which is a music tour powered by renewable energy. He has performed over 800 gigs powered by renewable battery power and, through this and other fundraising, has provided clean energy to global communities that do not have reliable access to stable sources of power. He has also been named by the UN as one of its 17 Young World Leaders, one each for the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

It's fascinating listening to AY talk about his early influences and how he maintains a positive mindset, resilience and energy for negotiating with governmental and corporate institutions on what have become highly challenging and politicised sustainability issues.

As a former social intrapraneur, I feel the rollercoaster of emotions that AY is going through. It's a battle to make progress from comments such as "Wow, love your project, man, it's so awesome" to actual tangible action like funding and real participation.

It's a hard, hard battle. You have to be persistent, resilient, focussed, know your shit 1001%, hard nosed and be complete pain in the ass to the people whom you want to get on your side.

And have vision.

As Mos Def said: "Comfortable people do not become revolutionaries".

S3 E8: Du Blonde16 Aug 202100:57:58

Du Blonde, aka Beth Jeans Houghton, is a massively talented and creative multi-instrumentalist,  singer, videographer, animator, designer, producer, label owner and ultra DIY-er.

Their third and latest album, Homecoming, feels just like that. It feels less introspective, more triumphant and defiant than even the last release, Lung Bread for Daddy, in 2019. Consistently dealing with subjects that are personal, bruising and heartbreaking, Homecoming feels like those subjects are now being faced off with more of a spirit of defiance and resilience.

It's got bags of collaboration in true Du Blonde style - Shirley Manson, Ezra Furman, Andy Bell and, of course, the Farting Suffragettes. Musically, it’s a beautiful pop record with plenty of distortion, fuzz and hooks to keep us lo-fi punks happy. Think Mary Chain, Mamas and Papas, surf, soul, Bad Religion oozen-aah's.

It’s been fascinating watching Beth's evolution over this trilogy of Du Blonde releases, so expect the unexpected with the new EP, Baby Forever, which is due for release on 27th August 2021.

S3 E7: Jenny Valentish09 Aug 202100:58:25

This is a bit of deviation from what we’ve been doing so far but a) there is a music industry connection and b) change never harmed anyone c) it’s an ace story and d) I’ve got an ace guest

Jenny Valentish started her working life in the music industry starting her own fanzine - cheekily called "Slapper: The Groupie’s Guide to Gropable Bands" and then writing for Dazed and Confused, NME, Time Out and doing artist bios, various stints in music publicity for artists like Swans, Jimmy Cauty, Bill Drummond and Afghan Whigs and over the last few years she has become a speaker, coach and author. She’s written 3 books. Her 2017 memoir called Woman of Substances in which she uses scientific research and theories and her own experiences, to investigates the paths that, in particular, women take into and out of addiction.

Her latest book is a follow up to Woman of Substances and is called Everything Harder Than Everyone Else, which follows people doing the things that most couldn’t, wouldn’t or shouldn’t. By delving into their extreme behaviour, there’s a lot that us mere mortals can learn about the human condition.

It's a rollercoaster read of experiences with a neuroscientis, performance artists, pornstar turned fighter, architect, BDSM Dom, bare knuckle fighter, wrestler and bodybuilder.

We're gonna talk about what Jenny learnt, what we can all learn and how her immersive journalism has challenged her own mindset.

S3 E6: Svetlanas02 Aug 202100:52:06

Svetlanas are one of the most dynamic and hard working bands around. Their music takes me back to the glory days of 1980’s hardcore and skatecore - one of my favourite eras.  A live Svetlanas show is unforgettable: it's like being in an incendiary cyclone of buzzing, distorted  guitars, pummelling drums and bass and, of course, the electrifying stage presence of Olga. All of this, plus never compromising on their core values and belief systems means Svetlanas have built a community of followers that is like a family.

As Olga quite correctly reminded me, they are "the most dangerous band in the world".

It was a huge honour to welcome Olga, Diste and Steve of Svetlanas!

S3 E5: Zia McCabe (Part 2)26 Jul 202101:07:32

It's a massive thank you and welcome back to Zia McCabe of the Dandy Warhols!

We talked so much in depth in Part 1 about formative influences, identity, skills and mindset that we couldn't possibly leave all unanswered questions about how this applies to Zia's musical creativity.

So here goes: we're gonna go from how Zia became appointed to the position of Secret Agent McCabe to basically protect the band from any nonsense (and there's a dynamite story about how she did that with merch scammers)….to how collaborations with Massive Attack helped her creativity…and how music has helped her to believe in her ability to adjust and adapt to big changes in her life.

These are 100% experiential observations that will help anyone who is thinking about their future direction in life.

S3 E4: John Dwyer19 Jul 202100:53:46

I was literally dancing round the room when John Dwyer agreed to be on the show.

John is a tireless, persistently forward-thinking warrior whose influence is impossible to quantify. The band that he founded and leads - Osees (Thee Oh Sees) -  is one whose influence is equally impossible to quantify.

He defines experimentation.

...Hurtling, bruising, brooding, hypnotic, phalanx of double drummers, muscular, veins of gold through granite, shifting ground, heavy, lush, stately, groovy, roar, whisper, fuzz fried...

 And my favourite….

... Cauldron of chaos

These are John and Matt's notes of the Osees' albums Orc and Mutilator….pretty accurate huh?

Thank you John, this was a blast!

S3 E3: Meredith Graves12 Jul 202101:07:02

I was thrilled when Meredith Graves agreed to be on my podcast and I am even more thrilled to release her episode.

Listening to Meredith is informative, funny and totally absorbing. Her views on the power of our mindset is fascinating and of massive importance to how we think about our life.

For me, her infinite fascination and curiosity with our world is motivated by her drive to learn, challenge, grow, improve and make our world a more inclusive and accepting place. She breaks things up to see the constituent parts and then reconstructs them in her world view.

Meredith is a writer, purveyor of magik, tarot explorer, witchcraft practitioner, seamstress, risk taker, hardcore noise maker, lifelong rule breaker, journalist, TV presenter and currently Director of Music at Kickstarter.

S3 E2: Adamski05 Jul 202101:09:21

We’re going from punk rock to acid house to waltz to cyberbilly in this episode, so if that doesn’t get your creative thinking flowing, I’m packing in.

He formed his first band The Stupid Babies when he was 11, with John Peel playing their legendary 3 chord, kazoo soloing, song Babysitters. He then formed Diskord Datcord with his older brother Mark and Jonny Slut, releasing a cover of X-Ray Spex's Identity.

He visited Ibiza in 1988 and caught the burgeoning Balearic groove vibe and, as they say, the rest is history.

For me, Adamski's musical journey is one of paddling against the tide, anti-pigeonholing, anti-establishment with a strong love for futurism and technology.

And we don't mention or talk about Seal and THAT song (well, not much because it's been done to death). But we do talk about the link between David Cameron, gurning and dog's bottoms, Happy Mondays, Ian Dury, Poly Styrene, Donny Osmond, appearing in Titbits and mistaking Emerson, Lake and Palmer for the Sex Pistols.

Even more exciting than finding out more about the person behind the music and listening to his wonderful, funny stories of his time in the industry and formative influences, is that this is the first podcast to use the word "epiphoniphically".

S3 E1: Thor Harris28 Jun 202100:58:13

So stoked to open up Season 3 with a legend who embodies what life is about.

More than anything else, Thor Harris inspires a life of positivity, a community builder for the many, not the few. Not just in his East Austin neighbourhood, but worldwide.

He is a multi-instrumental musician – drums, percussion, xylophone, vibraphone, marimba, clarinet, oboe, orchestral bells. He’s also a massively creative carpenter, plumber and artist and many, many more things.

His Twitter is a riot of joy.

He’s played and collaborated with Swans, Shearwater, Bill Callahan, Shahzad Ismaily, Anna Rossi, Jarboe, Amanda Palmer and Ben Frost amongst others. His current collective, Thor & Friends, with Peggy Ghorbani and Sarah Gautier is a master class in improvisation, experimentation and community sharing.

S13 E9: Nicolette Vilar11 Sep 202400:52:35

Over the last few years, I’ve been trying to work out why certain things in my life have turned out the way they have. Friendships has been a particular thing that’s been on my mind, in particular why I’ve tended to let some slide. I’ve had occasions where I’ve reconnected with lost friends and family and realised just how important they are. Having said that, I do think that the way we handle friendships is kinda different to that of my parents generation, when it was definitely friendships for life. More people live a nomadic life these days, so community is less of a thing, and also I’m much more aware of my own identity shifting as I get older and what’s important to me changing and I think this impacts who comes on our own journey with us. I think it makes you realise how powerful your real friendships are.

Nicolette Vilar has dedicated her life to the creative arts as a fabulous graphic and visual arts designer and also the singer in Go Betty Go where her close, tight friendships with the band members have been forever, endured the rocky road of life and have, I think, been instrumental in the band reforming and recording their soon to be released EP called Black and Blue. The title hints at the bruises, yet it’s self-care, time, friendships – and our old, great mate, music - that help you heal.

S2 E10: Audrey Campbell21 Jun 202101:02:23

Right! What a way to finish off Season 2, fizzing and crackling with energy and humanity.

Audrey Campbell and her band, Pleasure Venom, are making some of the most dynamic, immersive, progressive and genre-busting music around. The music is honest, raw, beautiful and it’s about immersing their listeners into their experiences.

I've got massive respect and love for Audrey. Listening to her talking about her mindset, self belief, DIY, being in control of what you choose to do, humanity, fans and her evolution is an education and totally fascinating. I hope you get as much out of this as I did.

S2 E9: Jesus Hooligan14 Jun 202101:00:52

With the mighty Jesus Hooligan, you can expect a lot of noisy creativity, collaboration, participation and human emotion. And unsatisfying Facebook breakfasts.

Stephen Brunton started making his own music using sounds that he liked from materials that he worked with – barrels, angle grinders, chains, metal tubes, tanks.

The tribal, primal rhythmic sound from hitting these things gives everyone who is participating – either actively or passively - a feeling of connection with others.

It was a total blast talking to Stephen. Open your mind and open your body to a different way of creating music and feel the power of human connection.

S2 E7: Zia McCabe31 May 202101:10:45

This was so much fun.

Zia McCabe is an international treasure. A truly awesome, Vinyl Factory glasses-wearing, effortlessly cool, rock n roll veteran. She plays keyboards, percussion and bass in one of the legendary rock n roll bands…..

The Dandy Warhols have always paddled against the tide, been firmly unconventional, firmly counter-culture, anti-pigeon-holing, yet always cool, treated experimentation as their slightly off-centre but “couldn’t live without you” housemate and always followed their musical instincts.

Hip shaking sonic rebels where you don't know what you'll get, but at the same time you do know what you'll get.

And importantly…..Zia is also a qualified real estate advisor. If you wanna buy real estate in Portland, Oregon, go see A To Zia Real Estate.

In this episode, we're talking about growing up, formative influences, finding identity, self belief, emotional intelligence, making the most of our skillset, bad car advertising…….and Lars Vegas.

S2 E6: Gemma Thompson24 May 202100:55:49

The opening chord of "Fuckers"  is the prelude to a hypnotic 10 minute ceremony. The architect of that shamanic cascade of tense reverb is my guest today - the amazing Gemma Thompson.

Gemma is the highly acclaimed, powerful and inventive guitarist and songwriter in Savages, the band nominated for a Mercury Prize on two separate occasions for their albums, Silence Yourself (2013) and Adore Life (2016). Her deliciously intoxicating guitar work gives a strong hint of her love of experimenting with sound textures.

It was fascinating to talk to Gemma and listen to her endless love for learning, knowledge and experimenting with new ideas and ways of constructing her sonic assaults.

We also talk about how awesome Savages' song Fuckers is and how it shows up Gemma's sonic power (well, I banged on about it, Gemma's too modest...).

Sound experimentation has become the characteristic of Bashan - Gemma’s latest musical collaborative with her husband Sam Sherry and his brother, Adam.

Gemma is also a multidisciplinary artist who works with drawing, printmaking (like intaglio and lithography) and sound to record sensory experience of place.

A sonic, visual and tactual scientist who just also happens to be a creative genius.

S2 E5: Martin Atkins17 May 202101:09:28

This is a real honour.

Martin Atkins is the definition of entrepreneurial activity in cultural arts endeavors, his 40+ years in the music business spans across genres and borders and industries.

It's an hour of stories and opinions that are funny, hard hitting and absolutely relevant about how to survive not just in the music industry, but in whatever you field you work or life you lead.

Oh, and we also get to hear the opinions of Martin's dog, Max!

He was a member of Public Image Ltd and Killing Joke. He founded industrial supergroup Pigface, The Damage Manual, and Murder Inc., and has contributed to Nine Inch Nails (for which he has a Grammy)  and Ministry. He is the owner of Invisible Records and Mattress Factory Recording Studios (est. 1988). He is the author of Tour:Smart, Welcome To The Music Business….You’re F*cked!, Band:Smart, and is the new Music Industries Coordinator at Millikin University in Decatur Illinois.  Martin is a producer, drummer, documentary filmmaker, DJ, and father of four. Whatever the future of entrepreneurial music business education is, you can pretty much bet that he’ll be in the middle of it.

For this episode, it's a privilege to be with two wonderfully creative and warm musicians - Ego Sensation and Dave W of New York City's psychedelic brutalist deconstructors, White Hills

This is a band for whom evolution, collaboration and experimentation are synonymous.

Through collaborating with diverse artists such as Jim Jarmusch, Yasmine Hamdan, Simone-Marie Butler and Jim Coleman, Ego and Dave allow themselves to sculpt alternative soundscapes that can surprise even themselves. Unexpected outcomes are the beauty of collaboration - you never quite know what you're gonna get.

S2 E3: Richie Kennedy03 May 202100:47:27

This time, we're gonna do something a bit different and see what wizardry is happening in the world of the recording and production studio.

Richie Kennedy is a producer, engineer and mixer who works at the legendary Assault and Battery studios of Flood and Alan Moulder.

He’s built a mighty impressive list of clients – Jehnny Beth, Ed O’Brien, Murder Capital, Celeste, Suede, Ride, U2 and…..Kylie and Dua Lipa!

This was such a fascinating chat with a funny, warm, collaborative and highly skilled, self-confessed nerd about how he approaches working with artists. Richie points out that a high level of emotional intelligence, curiosity and collaboration skills are helpful in enabling artists to make the most of their precious time in the studio.

Plus a healthy dose of nerdery….

"At the end of the day, at lot of us from technical to creative to artists, we're all a big bunch of nerds pretending to be cool, we're all the weird kids in school getting together to make something"

S2 E2: Dave Randall26 Apr 202100:55:27

In the second episode of Season 2, I'm delighted that we have Dave Randall with us as our special guest where we're talking about the mindset aspects of curiosity, identity, collaboration, the power of our instinct. For me, my chat with Dave highlights why living our life that aligns with what we value most is one of the most important paths we can take.

Dave is a guitarist, producer, composer, author and social activist. Musically, he has worked with artists like Faithless, Sinead O’Connor, Dido, Emilíana Torrini, and Roland Gift and contributed to the 1 Giant Leap Project, featuring musicians from all around the world including  Neneh Cherry and Michael Stipe.

His current collective is called Slovo with singer Barbarella and their latest album is called Bread & Butterflies. It expands previous collaborations with hip hop innovator Mike Ladd. And Barbarella is a truly remarkable vocalist, switching between loose Gwen Stefani like vocals and on Call Me, powerful, soaring opera. You can’t put a genre on it and that’s a good thing to my mind. We’ve been taught to compartmentalise too many things for too long.

Dave is also the author of the excellent “Sound System: The Political Power of Music” – a fascinating read on the power of music for both protesters and agitators and for the ruling corporate and governmental classes. The paradox of protest and pacification.

In the first episode of Season 2, I'm delighted to have the amazing Monrhea Carter, one of the most talented, individual and experimental DJ's and producers of the exciting, underground electronic music scene in Nairobi.

She is also one of the few female DJs on this scene.

She often experiments with Sonic Pi, the music coding platform and, using samples from the Sound of Nairobi Archive, she has created an immersive, dark yet uplifting ambient audio experience that pulls on the sounds of nature and our environment. She has performed mind-bending live coding DJ sets and has established a live-coding collective called BYTE.

S13 E8: Tara Rez08 Sep 202400:58:56

One of the things that I was looking at about 7-8 years ago was the growth of the term ‘multi-hyphenate’ and how, with us living longer lives (well, that was the case up to 2019, I think Covid has probably affected that a little), more people – and across all ages - were moving away from the stable job, linear career trajectory and into a more multi-hyphenate way of working which involves doing more than one thing, often 3/4/5/6/7/8 different things. It struck me that many creatives, particularly musicians, have always had so many aspects – roles if you want - to their lives – songwriting, playing, producing, poetry, art, promotion, DJ’ing, band management, tour management, running a label, marketing – and that if you’re gonna hold up an example of what a multi-hyphenate life looks like, musicians would be it. It’s the DIY ethic that blew up when punk started and has filtered into a whole way of being for future generations.

You can’t really talk about a multi-hyphen life without talking to Tara Rez. She’s doing all of the above and more and more, including her own band, The Duel, inspired by punk rock, free of any clichés, rules, boundaries and 100% free spirited.

S1 E10: Andrew Fearn12 Apr 202100:51:44

In the final episode of Season 1, I'm talking to Andrew Fearn of Sleaford Mods, one of the most talked about, exciting and authentic bands around.

A really great conversation about gut instincts, open minds, relatability and curiosity with someone who just loves music and the vast creativity and fun that experimenting with musical styles, sounds and equipment can bring.

Andrew's roots are firmly in DIY and he continues to champion that ethos in music and life.

With influences from Butthole Surfers to Pet Shop Boys to KLF to Joy Division and everything in between (apart from Britpop), I really love Andrew's open minded, experimental approach to fusing contrasting musical styles and effects.

S1 E9: Jessica Louise Dye05 Apr 202100:48:04

In this episode, I am talking to Jessica Louise Dye. This conversation is an inspiration if you want to find your true identity, find your tribe, find an environment that gives you energy and do things on your own terms.

Follow what your gut tells you.

Jess moved to New York City in 2010 and it changed her life.

In her own words "New York City became the fifth member of my band"

She threw herself into the Lower East Side Ludlow scene, found her identity and became who she wanted to be and is now at the centre of the NYC surf garage, neon, retro rock n roll scene.

Her band, High Waisted, play beautifully melodic, surf garage psychedelic rock 'n' roll. They have put out 2 fantastic albums, 2016’s On Ludlow and Sick of Saying Sorry which came out in May 2020. It's music for people who love music. And can't dance.

S1 E8: Fur Dixon29 Mar 202101:09:04

In this episode, I'm talking with Fur Dixon where we talk about her formative influences, how her time with The Cramps shaped her identity, reconciliation, mistakes and unburdening herself from the past to release her creativity.

Fur became the first ever live bass player with The Cramps on the Date With Elvis tour, having started playing in wild LA rock n roll bands such as The Whirlybirds, Hollywood Hillbillys at around 20 years old.

She made the brave decision to leave The Cramps following the final show of the UK/EU tour and embark on her own career and life.

Fur has never left rock n roll far behind and her new band, WTFUKUSHIMA, is a real powerhouse of tight, rock n roll with a line up to die for:  Fur on guitar and vocals, Dusty Watson (The Sonics) on drums, Paul Roessler (The Screamers, 45 Grave) on keyboards, Dave Provost (Dream Syndicate) on bass and Bernard Yin (Fuzztones, BellRays) on lead guitar.

S1 E7: Michelle Cruz Gonzales22 Mar 202101:06:30

In this episode, I am talking with Michelle Cruz Gonzalez about discovering her identity, colour blindness, the self-confidence that her mother instilled in her, how her punk rock outlook on life feeds into her teaching and the importance of listening to young people. This is such a fantastic conversation.

Michelle is an extraordinary Xicana woman who emerged onto the 1990’s U.S. West Coast punk rock scene in the legendary hardcore punk band Spitboy. She is an author and educator who lives the values that punk rock taught.

Her memoir, The Spitboy Rule: Tales of a Xicana in a Female Punk Band is an outstanding read about her time and experiences in Spitboy.

But it's much more than that: it is a story of identity and self discovery, colour blindness, misogyny, privilege, class and the internal and external tensions that these issues create. It’s written with empathy for everyone who has faced identity and discrimination issues.

S1 E6: Victoria Smith15 Mar 202100:37:01

In this episode, I am talking with Victoria Smith about the feelings The Ramonas had about doing their first originals album, overcoming the fear of getting it wrong, going back to the drawing board and how to keep creative.

Vicky is a bass guitar maestro of punk rock and the blues, who has worked with Charlie Harper, Dani Wilde, Richie Ramone, Cockwomble and, of course, one of my faves The Ramonas.

She is a songwriter and vocalist as well as bass guitar teacher and artist.

She is a fantastic and ferocious live performer and feeds the crowd with her energy (and many bass faces).

She's even let me carry her equipment.

Oh, and she can jump like Dee Dee better than me.

S1 E5: Dave Haslam08 Mar 202100:58:27

In this episode, I talk to Dave Haslam about finding our identity, authenticity, constantly evolving to keep building our creativity, trying new things, dealing with rejection and criticism, the importance of nightlife on society and how a DJ can build relationships and bring people together on the dance floor.

Dave cut his cultural teeth as a DJ at the Hacienda and has since become one of THE great cultural and social authorities. Alongside his work as a researcher and presenter, he has written several top-class books, including ‘Life After Dark: A History of British Nightclubs & Music Venues’ – really an essential read and re-read given the direct and indirect attacks on nightlife culture – and a limited edition “Art Decades” series of really wonderful mini books covering his personal record collection, Courtney Love, Keith Haring and Sylvia Plath.

S1 E4: TaSz Muerte08 Mar 202100:35:02

In this episode, I'm talking to TaSz Muerte about collaboration, learning from mistakes, being your own person, self care and the importance of trusting gut instinct in life.

TaSz is the founder of BLXPLTN, one of the most ferocious and important bands around. He is also a solo artist under the name of A BO1. He has the ability and adaptability to switch between visceral, tense, melodic electro-punk and dark, introspective love songs. His music challenges you to immerse yourself into his compelling stream of consciousness.

S1 E3: Jennifer Finch08 Mar 202100:57:11

In this episode, I'm talking with Jennifer Finch about her stage anxiety, how she has taught herself to deal with anything that life throws at us, mindsets, working with emotions, developing new skills and ways of working and living, perceptions and allowing people to have their experiences.  This was such a wonderful, open conversation.

Jennifer is a legendary musical performer, whom we all know and love from her thrilling performances with L7.

She is also photographer, visual designer, computer science grad, publishing creative director and community builder.

She has always lived outside her comfort zone and lived her life the DIY way.

Inspiring the revolution.

S1 E2: Youth08 Mar 202100:47:09

In the second episode, I'm talking with Youth about the importance of simple things like declaring yourself an artist - or whatever you want to be - as the first step to adapting your mindset,  exploring things that are outside your comfort zone and his love for opening people's minds to new and exciting ideas.

Youth has seen and done it all.

From the sonic juggernaut of Killing Joke, to transformational producer to DJ, artist, dad, writer, story teller, festival curator and host, counter-culture arts lab and magazine chief collaborator, Youth is one of the most original, diverse and adaptable musical figures of our generation.

He is someone who has massively influenced my own mindset.

S1 E1: Dave Barbarossa08 Mar 202100:24:01

In my opening episode, I'm talking with the legendary Dave Barbarossa and we get into how the Sex Pistols' and BowWowWow manager, Malcolm McLaren, influenced his mindset about being unique, doing things differently and the power of individuality.

Dave emerged from the underground London punk rock scene, drumming on Adam and the Ants’ first album Dirk Wears White Sox, then moving on to form BowWowWow under the watch of Malcolm McLaren.

Since then, Dave has worked with artists such as Republica, Beats International and Roland Gift. Dave is also the author of Mudsharks, a powerful story of Harry Ferdinand growing up in 1970’s London and finding himself in the midst of the iconoclastic punk rock scene.

He is one of the most innovative, unique and respected drummers of my generation.

S13 E7: X-Raided01 Sep 202401:02:52

So, as hopefully my faithful and long suffering subscribers will know after 120 + episodes, the whole idea behind this podcast is about the importance of mindset and specifically how an experimental mindset can help us to navigate the world today, a world that is becoming more complex, more volatile, full of more and more contradictions and where outcomes are less and less predictable or certain.

Within our mindset, I really believe that emotional intelligence is one of the most important attributes that we need. I still find it hard to believe that it’s not part of our education systems – well, I don’t find it hard to believe actually, because once you start to teach empathy, self awareness, that kind of stuff… the divide and conquer tactics of the ruling elite start to become less effective and their power starts to be eroded. I do believe that it should be taught to kids as soon as they are born, but I realise that there are a whole load of structural, systemic things that need to be worked out.

X-Raided.

His lifestory is as big a headfuck that you can get.

He served a total of 26 years, five months, and 26 days in prison starting in 1992. He’s always been very clear and honest about what he did not do on that lifechanging morning and also very clear and honest about what he did do, about the bad choices he made – but it needs to be said, because this shit still goes on around the world, that the foundation of the case built to convict him back in 1992 was constructed on the systemic prejudice against black people and people of colour that had been pumped through the veins of the US through government operations like CoinTelPro with all its nefarious, community damaging tactics based on lies and manipulation. This was the longest consecutive sentence served by any musician ever and just six months less than the time Nelson Mandela served.

Whilst he was inside, he produced 12 albums give or take and he continued to create his music when he was released in 2018.

Last year’s A Prayer in Hell was truly outstanding and as we were recording this episode, his latest, the huge 24 track A Sin In Heaven, was about to be released and it’s another hypnotic masterclass in how old school can evolve into the present.

It’s powerful, distinguished and full of heart and soul.

I always like to take a moment to remember that music is always there for you, it will always come with you on your journey and it will always be your friend.

S13 E6: Stephanie Brooks23 Aug 202401:14:11

I'm gonna keep this one brief.

Stress Positions would have been in the list of identity shapers for 14 year old me. No question. They are hands down one of THE most potent and important bands right now. They will pulverise you with their musical and lyrical intensity. And in 30 years time, people will be talking about Stress Positions as they did - and still do - those pioneers of the 80s hardcore scene.

Trust me, they are that good.

I'm so very happy to have had this opportunity to talk to Stephanie Brooks, who takes vocal ferocity and progressiveness to a different level.

Big thanks to Justin Pearson at ThreeOneG for introducing us.

S13 E5: Marquise Fair16 Aug 202401:19:03

As the devoted fans of this small but perfectly formed podcast will know, I’m a big believer that emotional intelligence is one of THE super powers for navigating the world, especially nowadays with all its complexity, volatility, uncertainty and division. It often feels like the critical components of emotional intelligence – like self-management, self awareness, empathy and social skills – are out of reach, I mean I also feel that it’s getting out of reach for myself, such is the helplessness and rage that I feel sometimes. It’s the hardest time I’ve ever known for keeping raw emotions in check, at least it is for me.

I went to a talk given by John Robb a month or so ago and he posed the question “Do you believe in the power of rock n roll?”. It made me think: Do I? What can music do? Music is always my friend, even when the world is going to shit – and believe me, being in the UK this past week really makes me think it is. It has been and always will be a constant in my life. It’s made me laugh, made me cry and dug me out of holes.

I’ve always believed that politics, protest and social commentary belongs in music. So, I always feel positive when I hear about or listen to musicians that care, ones that believe that we need to strive for unity.

Marquise Fair is doing just that with music to try and bridge those divides with messages of unity, peace and freedom.
