S16 E9: Segs Jennings14 Nov 202501:27:02

When Segs and I were messaging trying to organise this podcast, Segs wrote something like “we’ve got lots to talk about…the world is changing what feels like day by day”. Now with my meticulous research – OK, it was just by luck! -  I was reading back at an interview Segs, Ruffy and me did a couple of years ago just after they’d done their first tour of Spain. And we were talking about movements getting big and Segs said “The bigger the movement gets it has to get okayed by the government and the it becomes “you can demonstrate here and here and here between this time and that time, don’t make too much noise and we won’t kettle you”.

And that was when Sunak – a Tory - was Prime Minister.

Fast forward to now and talk about speed of change - we have a Labour government who are now probably more aggressive in shutting down dissent and protest than anyone in my memory.

So, talking about the speed of change in the world, there you go…..

Segs and Ruts DC are producing some of the most passionate and accomplished music that’s entirely in tune with the groundbreaking music from The Ruts and just as relevant as The Ruts music was and still is.  Having them around, producing great music, taking a stand against the injustices, governments and corporations that blight our world, and doing it all with an unflinching, unwavering message of “people unite … never surrender” is, I think, one of life’s victories that we should honour.

S16 E8: Luca Vergano07 Nov 202500:55:36

One area of my being that I’ve been working on is not feeling the necessity to be ultra-prepared for things. Things like my podcast episodes. I’ve been able to trace this back to when I was a kid – long story which I won’t bore you with. I think this is tied into this obsession that a lot of society has with perfectionism – don’t make a mistake, be ready for all angles, get it right first time – when really, human beings are far from perfect and we don’t need to dig too far into the newspaper headlines to see many examples of this.

So, I took the very brave (for me) step of doing something that’s really important for so many reasons – getting out of my comfort zone. So, I have avoided any research on my guest today, other than he is a co-founder of the band Afrodream who have recently released their second and totally inspiring album called Guiss Guiss, a beautifully uplifting, diverse and rich mix of rhythms, instrumentation and vocals at the core. It’s really, really special.

This conversation with one of the founders of Afrodream, Luca Vergano, was perfect - fun, informative and inspiring.

S15 E9: James Johnston08 Aug 202500:58:54

It’s fascinating to look at the entire creative evolution of an artist - how they started and where they are now. Of course, looking at what’s been going on in their life, can feel quite invasive and voyeuristic, like prying into the inner sanctum of life, but hey, all in the name of research!

Music and art (although I’m by no means an expert) often feels subjective and open to interpretation and honestly, for me, I love it when I’m challenged to think about what it means to me.

This brings me on to relatability. Perhaps it’s now an overused word that has been diluted of its relevance and meaning.

But is it important for an artist to create work that its audience will find relatable in some way?

Will it help the audience make their own interpretations if they can relate to it?

Or is speaking with truth and honesty equally or more important?

And what about good old fashioned escapism?

What does that connection between artist and audience look like?

I don’t know why the work of my guest today makes me ask these questions! Maybe it’s because his work often feels like it is accessing what’s in the back of his mind but created in a way that feeds my own interpretations and connects in a way that tunes into my own empathy.

His art was described as “loose and raw that straightaway imprints itself on the human imagination”. This is interesting because it is the consistency of that rawness - and honesty - that also runs through his music which again gets my imagination fired up.

I hope you enjoy this fascinating chat with James Johnston, who came to prominence in the early 90's with Gallon Drunk and has also played with PJ Harvey, The Bad Seeds, Faust and Lydia Lunch as well as releasing solo and collaborative work of his own. He started painting in 2017 which is just going from strength to strength.

S6 E8: Jordan GCZ11 Apr 202200:51:04

Jordan Czamanski has been firmly producing music from the leftfield of electronica for over 20 years with collaborations as Juju and Jordash, Mountain High & many others. Part jazz, part acid, part ambient, part psychedelic, part intergalactic, part deep house, wholly experimental and wholly avant-garde which all goes to show that thankfully I have no idea how to label his music.

He's a true improviser who makes us discard genres and think for ourselves about what the music means to us.

His debut solo album, My Brain's Brain, is out now on Terrence Dixon's phenomenal Minimal Detroit label.

S6 E7: Sarah Shook04 Apr 202200:58:52

This is a fabulous convo, digging into the importance of teaching and learning emotional intelligence from a young age to improve our lives and heal society, and talking about Sarah's relationships with their parents,  childhood experiences, self awareness, identity, empathy, and their life as a single parent, activist, musician and awesome human.

Sarah formed their current band, Sarah Shook and The Disarmers, in 2014 and their  current album, Nightroamer, is just magnificent - attitude, tunes, emotion and bags of self awareness. Think Johnny Cash, Joan Jett, Mike Ness, Wanda Jackson and Jonny Two Bags.

And I'm chuffed that they wore their new hoodie!

S6 E6: Emma Lee MC28 Mar 202200:59:38

I first heard Emma Lee MC's own brand of hip hop just a few months ago and was blown away with her dynamic blend of poetry, emotionally intelligent, positional rhymes and minimalist beats. Old skool, yet futuristic hip hop. Right up my street.

Wow, I enjoyed this episode so much. Just sit back and listen to the wisdom, empathy, warmth, humour and self awareness of such a wonderful human.

Born in Uganda & raised in Harlem, NYC, Emma Lee's been creating & performing since a youth, she's shared tracks/stages with the likes of Kool Keith, Nile Rodgers, DMC of Run DMC, M1 of Dead Prez & Patti Labelle.

S6 E5: EERA21 Mar 202200:42:30

Last year, EERA (Anna Lena Bruland), released her fabulous latest record, Speak….in her own words "a search for a balance in life, acknowledging myself, and being proud of who I am. To become braver and more confident, and stop questioning so much. Accept and move on instead. This album is more who I am.”

In this episode, we talk about the emotions of looking back at, and performing, earlier work, classical training, evolving as a person, looking ahead - not backwards - as an artist, giving advice to herself, anxieties, self acceptance, not growing up, discovering life and the uncertainties of a musician's life.

Fascinating, deep stuff from a progressive thinker and wonderful musician, and a big shout out for Maya, Anna Lena's dog, who quite rightly deserved to play some part of the show!

S6 E4: Carol Hodge14 Mar 202201:04:19

Carol Hodge exemplifies what punk rock really means - empathy, self awareness, respect, humour, uniqueness, tolerance and understanding.

This is a brilliant convo. I thoroughly enjoyed being enlightened with Carol's world view and experiences. There's something for everyone in here, especially those who have battled with life - that's pretty much all of us, right?

To quote Carol:

“Always waiting for things to get better, for the perfect time, but it doesn’t exist. Change is gradual, one day a time. Progress has been made, if you take the time to stop and look back, you’ll see it. "

She's an amazing songwriter, performer and pianist, crafting searing melodies and poignant lyrics that will make you lurch from joy to heartbreak. She also performs as a keyboardist/backing vocalist Ryan Hamilton,  has also guested with Ginger Wildheart, Headsticks and The Membranes.  She also sings and plays keys with Steve Ignorant and I can't wait to hear more of this!

(And she has the ability to "knock out a bloody tune" (© Pete Postlethwaite) - have a laugh at my cringe as Carol clarifies that she is NOT, and never has been, a brass band.)

S6 E3: James Chapman (MAPS)07 Mar 202200:47:25

Calling all introverts with a passion and aspiration to create - this is for you.

James Chapman is the creative wizard that is MAPS. He is producing some stunning, ambitious, symphonic soundscapes, inspired by melody and emotion and supported by his knowledge of and training in classical. It really is very powerful.

He’s also opened himself up to the worlds of remixes and reworks of artists such as A Certain Ratio, Depeche Mode, Kid Moxie, Polly Scattergood, Goldfrapp, The Killers, Moby and Bombay Bicycle Club, remodelling songs so that they turn into kinda living organisms.

Take a listen to James' story, there's something in it for all of us.

S6 E2: Ian Devaney28 Feb 202200:59:40

Ian Devaney is the lead singer of Nation of Language, the wonderful Brooklyn trio who are creating a modern day synth wave infused with 70’s and ‘80’s scapes. Their songs speak of personal experiences, vulnerability and humility.

One thing that resonated with me before even speaking to Ian was their collective and individual resilience of mind to get through an incredibly uncertain music landscape to where they are now which is two really excellent LP’s, "Introduction, Presence" and 2021's "A Way Forward".

Ian is a multi-instrumentalist, creates the band's artwork, and is also part of Machinegum - an artist collective with Delicate Steve, Chris Egan, Martin Bonventre, and Erin Victoria Axtel and Ian's pal, The Strokes' Fab Moretti, who has helped Ian with self belief and expanding his creative mindset.

Thanks Ian, this was a really great convo!

S6 E1: Gordon Raphael21 Feb 202200:52:39

Wow. Gordon Raphael!

You're probably most familiar with Gordon through his work producing two timeless and hugely influential records in 2001 and 2003 for a band who re-captured the rock n roll romance and mythology - or is that reality?  - of New York City…..

…..they are, of course, The Strokes.

He’s also a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and performer who has released an amount of music that I’m ashamed to say took me by surprise. He is also an author with an imminent debut memoir which promises to be a fascinating insight into his life’s journey up to working with The Strokes. His subsequent production work has been with wonderful artists such as Blonde Redhead, Regina Spektor (Soviet Kitsch), Jody Porter, Hinds, Colleen Green and Atomic Stop.

S5 E10: Agustina Ruiz14 Feb 202200:39:30

Agustina Ruiz plays keys in the magnificently retro slash futuristic, surfy, psychedelic cumbia band Los Bitchos

Their debut album Let The Festivities Begin has just come out and a UK and Euro tour starts on 15th February 2022. Their music is a gloriously frenzied kaleidoscope of rhythms, percussion, guitars, synths and the wonderfully evocative keytar.

And no vocals.

Agustina was doing some fashion modelling but then her punk rock roots came calling like the 1-2-3-4 of Dee Dee Ramone and she joined Los Bitchos for some serious surf, psychedelica, cumbia and party times. The rest, as they say, is history.

S5 E9: Vara Sky07 Feb 202201:02:20

Vara Sky (aka Amy Swart) is a fabulous electronic music artist living in Los Angeles. She hits that very, very sweet spot of abrasive industrial and aggressive pummelling beats that on one hand feels very austere and almost desolate and on the other, incredibly democratic and communal.

I love Amy's story of how she went from being classically trained to finding her people, her safe space in the underground industrial electronic scene. She is a great example to us of the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people and the right environment.

Amy has been DJ’ing since 2001 and producing her own music since around 2015.  She’s also the boss of Corporatocrazy Records which, like her own music, specialises in, let’s say, the darker, more underground side of electronica.

S15 E8: Deb Googe25 Jul 202501:07:16

Way back when, maybe 8-9 years ago, I had been researching what sort of skills humans would need for the future, given that we were experiencing big changes in technology, demographics, stuff like that, the sort of things that would affect the world of work. One skill or attribute, whatever you want to call it, was adaptability. Workers were, and still are, being asked to do many different things in their jobs and also do those things differently. So the ability to adapt to quickly changing environment struck me as something that was quite important.

I do believe that this absolutely applies to musicians, who have long been very used to a volatile, uncertain world, but now playing with multiple bands, becoming familiar with audio production technology, having to become social media experts, streaming experts and the like have become a “normal” part of “the job”.

I didn’t fully appreciate the importance of improvisation as part of adaptability in creating music until I started playing the cello again after *coughs* thirty five years. Just a straightforward example of this – now bear in mind that I come from a very structured, classical learning and playing background – is putting my own harmonies into a piece and being comfortable that they might change depending on how I feel when I’m playing..

Sounds kinda obvious right?

But I assure you, for me, this has required a lot of unlearning and training myself to believe in myself and to trust my instinct. Honestly, I feel so great when that happens.

So…..finally it’s time to introduce Deb Googe and I promise you there is a link to what I have just been wibbling on about. Earlier this year, she released an album under the name da Googie with Cara Tivey called The Golden Thread that essentially featured a heavy dose of improvisation in its genesis and I’m really looking forward to how this compares with the other work she has done with My Bloody Valentine, Snowpony, Primal Scream, Thurston Moore and, of course, where it all began (I think) the legendary Bikini Mutants.

She’s hugely influential not just as a bass player who can create sonic masterpieces, but for pushing musical boundaries

S5 E8: DJ Food31 Jan 202201:03:15

“DJ Food is best described as Food for DJs, simple as that, just flip it around and it begins to mean something entirely different."

DJ Food is a project that started back in 1990 when Jonathan More and Matt Black's Coldcut innovation lab started producing collections of breaks, beats, loops and samples which were ideal for mixing, remixing - metaphorical food for DJ's - as well as actually for our own armchair listening and the no-so-armchair dancefloor. The project attracted like-minded collaborators like Patrick Carpenter, Paul Brook, Paul Rabiger, and Issac Elliston and eventually the mantle of DJ Food was passed into the hands of Strictly Kev (aka Kevin Foakes).

It's a real honour to have a chat with one of the continually most inventive, future thinking and experimental DJ’s of the past 30 years.

S5 E7: Meg Lee Chin24 Jan 202201:09:56

"What we need is a revolution driven by a philosophy of personal activism"

Meg Lee Chin is a visionary of the underground, DIY music and culture scene.

One of her early bands was Teknofear with Becky Wreck of Lunachicks and then Crunch who were one of the first Western bands to tour Ukraine shortly after the Soviet Union dissolved. Brilliant stories!

Meg is probably best known for her work with Pigface. She appeared on their 1997 LP "A New High in Low" as well as its follow-up, "Below the Belt".

She released her solo debut "Piece and Love" in 1999 which was critically acclaimed as a forerunner in the home studio revolution.

She has used her educational background and practical experience in music, art and video production and tech to support humanity, resistance, equality and individual empowerment, and all the while with counter-culture and personal activism pretty much playing lead roles.

Her DropUMentary England’s Mask is a series of 4 short films exploring the state of play in Britain, in particular why it is in danger of losing its creativity and innovation and needs to change its trajectory and revalue its biggest asset – its people.

S5 E6: Nemone17 Jan 202200:55:31

Nemone Metaxas has gained a vast range of skills and knowledge through her education, sport and her career in broadcasting and DJ'ing. As we'll hear, she is using her experience and passions to create a multi-hyphen life in the worlds of music and psychotherapy.

She has some fascinating insights into how she has found that these worlds  - which, at first glance appear very different -actually do intertwine.

Thanks Nemone, this was an awesome chat!

About Nemone

Nemone has been broadcasting and DJing for the best part of a quarter of a century, two decades of which she has been a familiar voice across the BBC. Joining Radio 1 in 2000, she has taken stints broadcasting to mainstream audiences on Radio 2 and Five Live before finding her spiritual home at BBC Radio 6 Music, latterly producing and presenting her own weekly electronic show - Electric Ladyland - from 2013 to 2021. She has produced and presented documentaries for BBC Radio 2 and has hosted numerous television shows reflecting her passion for sport and music.

Nemone holds a degree in psychology and a masters degree in Psychotherapy and Counselling and having had many years of hearing people’s stories through her broadcasting work, she now runs her own integrated counselling practice alongside DJ'ing, radio show hosting and innovative music projects.

She has been a huge advocate for breathing and grounding exercises; during the COVID pandemic producing her own 15 minute mid afternoon meditations to help people cope in isolation.

S5 E5: Gina Birch10 Jan 202200:53:22

Gina has been a massive influence on culture and society throughout her life and inspiration for many. She’s done film direction, videography, she’s a painter and she is a co-founder of the hugely seminal post-punk band The Raincoats.

What has struck me, both in her music and her painting is that she is her unique self, going where her heart and mind takes her, vandalising existing narratives with humour, subversion and vulnerability and, really importantly, having a lot of fun whilst doing it.

I think it’s this complete relatability that makes Gina’s impact so powerful.

Thanks Gina, this was just brilliant!

“They seemed like ordinary people playing extraordinary music. They had enough confidence to be vulnerable and to be themselves without having to take on the mantle of male rock/punk rock aggression.… or the typical female as sex symbol avec irony or sensationalism.”

S5 E4: A. Savage03 Jan 202200:50:01

Parquet Courts are a band who has experimented and brought individual influences into their sound.  With their latest and 8th studio album, Sympathy for Life, they have pushed the boundaries yet again to create another wonderful record.

Sonically the Parquet Courts totally squared with my music evolution: from the melody and nihilism of Velvets and Ramones, through to post-punk of The Fall and Raincoats and the discordant no wave of Sonic Youth.  But they threw it forward to the present day. Emotionally, it resonated with the nervousness, paranoia, nonchalance, panic and urgency that I often felt as I was growing up. They were a band that I could relate to and they sounded like music fans.

It was an honour to spend some time chatting to A. Savage, singer and songwriter for the band and also an instinctive artist in his own right as well as being responsible for most of Parquet Courts' artwork and other visuals.

S5 E3: Bahar Canca06 Dec 202100:57:32

I knew from the moment that Bahar said she was up for doing an episode that I'd made the right decision to pluck up the courage to ask her.

It's colourful, full of smiles, full of positivity, full of humanity and just bloody awesome.

She embodies the experimental mindset and I totally dig her attitude to life.  Try new stuff, enjoy trying it, see what happens, enjoy the results.

About Bahar

Bahar Canca moved to London in the mid-1990’s to study media and became pretty much fascinated with the diversity of the electronica clubbing scene. Immersing herself in this environment allowed her friendships to grow and, through house sharing and hanging out with DJ’s, she started to take up DJ’ing as her own hobby, promoting club nights, set up her own record label - SubBubble -and is now one of the leading psy-trance/techno DJ’s with a kaleidoscopic love for music and experimenting with new stuff.

Bahar is also the founder and creative genius behind Psy-Boutique – an electronica music festival that looks absolutely amazing with DJ’s such as Gaudi, Shane Gobi, Aphid Moon and System 7 (Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy formerly of Gong).

S5 E2: Maria Uzor29 Nov 202101:06:24

Maria Uzor has opened up a world that fuses the subversion and aftermath of the years that followed punk with the after hours, stripped back, defiant underground, counter-culture vibe of Miami’s Kitchen Club or New York’s Danceteria and flipped it forward to the present day.

She is highly creative, open-minded and empathetic and is confronting and understanding her past in order to understand who she is now and celebrate her own uniqueness with no apologies.

Maria is one half of the irresistible Sink Ya Teeth. She recently released her second solo EP called Innocence and Worldliness, a fabulous document of discovery, resilience and awareness. She is also a regular collaborator with A Certain Ratio.

S5 E1: James Spectrum22 Nov 202101:03:39

We kick off Season 5 with James Spectrum, founder of Pepe Deluxé.

There hadn’t been an album from Pepe in 10 years but…..things have happened…..they recently released their fifth album called Phantom Cabinet Vol 1 and the story that James tells us about the journey behind this release is extraordinary….

….as is the rest of my conversation with James, where we also got into some fascinating topics, like:

- why we continue to define ourselves by our work
- whether it's a good thing to be goal-oriented
- the paths we choose
- curiosity
- fear of making mistakes
- the importance of different languages in helping understand the world and each other

About Pepe Deluxé

For 25 years, Pepe Deluxe have been creating, recording, breaking and at various stages sampling and remixing.

Their music is a timeless kaleidoscope. It feels experimental – and it is certainly experimenting with influences – but the clear differentiator is that it is experimental and incredibly catchy: take Beatitude from 2003 – it’s got Black Cadillac, Numa, Daddy’s Blazin BBQ, Cruel Youth and Lying Peacefully – all with their own unique style – surf, spaghetti, Middle Eastern, psychedelia, downbeat, trip hop.

Listening to a Pepe Deluxé record offers the warmth and uplift that you get from familiarity yet the thrill of not knowing quite what’s coming next.

S4 E10: Raymond Ahn15 Nov 202100:57:29

What a fabulous way to end a fabulous Season 4 with Ray Ahn, co-founder of one of my favourite bands of all time - The Hard-Ons.

In this fantastic episode, when Ray's not humming Ferry 'Cross the Mersey, we're talking about playing Liverpool (I was there!), Dave Grohl, what drew him to punk, what living with freedom means, the importance of truth, friendships, taking risks, gut instinct and not worrying about what people think of you.

Thank you Ray, this was so memorable for me.

(if you didn't know already, the Hard-Ons are back with a new record, magnificently called “I’m Sorry Sir, That Riff’s Taken”)

About Ray and the Hard-Ons:

If not Australia’s most successful independent band, they are certainly the most influential. And they remain resolutely underground, DIY and bloody fantastic.

Along with Blackie (Peter Black), Ray is one of the original members and bass player with the band as well as the fella responsible for the band’s very distinctive artwork.

He released a book of around 750 pieces of his wonderfully subversive art in What I did during my School holidays and also one covering his Comic Book art. They’re available from all good book stores. And some not so good ones too I imagine. And probably from Ray as well.

He also formed Nunchukka Superfly, which is a much more avant garde, psychedelic wig out combo, and has written some very amusing blog posts – the ones about the ”punk pastry chef “ whipping up a magical $100 dessert, the shirt tucker and the case of mistaken Smashing Pumpkins identity are slabs of comedy gold from a highly talented curmudgeon

A few years ago, when asked what to expect from a new Hard-ons album, he said “Tons of melody – concise but exciting tunes played very well by old idiots”

S4 E9: Kelsey Warren08 Nov 202101:02:08

Bringing different influences, ideas and ways of working together is one of the most exciting and satisfying way to live your life and grow as a person.  I think this also goes for creating music - take Bowie, Zappa, Nina Simone, Prince, Led Zep, Little Simz, Miles Davis, Hendrix, Tina Turner. We've also seen it with many of my guests here.

Kelsey Warren is a proponent of this way of living and creating. I hugely admire his curiosity, open mindedness and drive to use his immense talent and expansive influences to constantly evolve and overcome the fear of stepping out of the constraining boxes that society likes to impose and breaking new ground.

Kelsey's latest project is Blak Emoji, who have just released Eclectro - and this is again something that I love - a record that breaks boundaries, genres and pigeonholes. Kelsey has quite rightly received a variety of accolades from notable publications including Rolling Stone, Clash, Afro-Punk, Line Of Best Fit, BUST, Popmuzik, Vampire Freaks and Ghost Cult Magazine.

Thanks for an inspiring conversation, Kelsey!

S15 E7: Scott Osment11 Jul 202501:11:44

I think gravitas is a rare but really important attribute to have, especially when the world is so fucked up, chaotic, volatile, reactionary. Gravitas. Presence. I wanna be around people that have the ability to give off positive energy in this way.

Scott Osment is one of the most blistering, powerful and accurate drummers I have seen. I’ve seen him in two very different bands – Deaf Club and Glassing – and I’ve yet to see him in Planet B – maybe in 2026??!! Each band has their own style and his adaptability to their styles blows me away.

For me, Scott also has that presence that I was talking about earlier. You always feel that whatever the situation, obstacles, whatever, he will find a way – fuck it, let’s try this, nah, we’re good, let’s go, yeah, I’m up for that. That willingness to try and if it doesn’t work out, so what? Try something else. Again, I just think the ability to show calm and level headedness is kinda a superpower.

I mean, I even put away my own insecurities when I asked him if he wanted to do this podcast – no mean feat - cos I really did think he would say yes. And he did!

Enjoy!

S4 E8: Richard Norris01 Nov 202101:12:32

It’s hard to overstate the influence that Richard Norris has had on the music industry over the past 40 years.

In his youth in St Albans, Richard got involved in the experimental and creative punk rock scene, forming the Innocent Vicars, creating a DIY fanzine called 99%, working as a label manager for Bam Caruso and writing for Strange Things and the NME. Following a, let's say, "educational" collaboration with Genesis P. Orridge, Richard formed The Grid with Dave Ball (from Soft Cell) in 1988 and released their debut single, the Balearic-inspired Floatation in 1990. It was their 1994 single, Swamp Thing with the inspired banjo reel that catapulted the band to commercial success.

Richard has been at the front of the ever-evolving electronic scene, from the early days of Shoom and The Clink, to covering the emergence of Amnesia in Ibiza, to releasing his own house, acid house, ambient, meditative, drone and psychedelic tracks. He's worked with Joe Strummer, has run record labels, DJ'd, wrote Paul Oakenfold’s official biography and remixed and produced artists like Armand van Helden, Soft Cell, Saint Etienne, Cornershop, Billie Ray Martin, Shakespeare's Sister and has collaborated on the experimental project Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve with Erol Alkan. The list is almost endless!

Recently, he has been doing his own thing - releasing a series of totally hypnotic, ambient, healing experiences, raising money for MIND. And latterly he released Hypnotic Response, a more psychedelic, experimental set of tracks.

There's more exciting stuff in the works….take a listen to the wonderful mindset of one of music's legends.

S4 E7: Dimitri Coats25 Oct 202101:15:29

Having been hired to produce a Circle Jerks record that never happened, Dimitri Coats developed a strong bond with Keith Morris (Black Flag, Circle Jerks) and, hey, waddyaknow…...OFF! was born.

Formerly a drama student and actor, Dimitri's musical background is in classic hard rock with Burning Brides, so OFF! was something way different for him. He took on lead guitar,  learned the art of downstrokes, songwriting, production and band management duties and here we are - one of the most thrilling bands around.

It was totally engrossing talking to Dimitri about deep stuff like:

- the importance of emotional intelligence in today's world
- adaptability
- the excitement of improvising and getting weird in the studio
- how he continues to push himself out of his comfort zone,
- how he and his bandmates -  Keith, Justin and Autrey - thrive off each other's growth mindsets to experiment, do things differently and improve collectively and individually.

"Keith is making some of the most relevant music of his life - right now. We've really entered into a unique phase for a band like us"

2022 promises to be a defining year for OFF!

S4 E6: Kira Roessler18 Oct 202100:59:49

Kira Roessler joined Black Flag in 1984 at what was possibly the most polarising point in the band’s career.

They had just released the game changing My War and were going on an extensive tour to promote the record. The band had moved away from the ferocious assault of Damaged and was venturing into songs that were much more experimental and freeform, yet still retaining the relentless intensity. The punk rock community were ironically divided at this non-conformist change of direction.

Although her time in Black Flag was a hugely important and formative  part of Kira’s story, it's one part of her life and there is much, much more to tell.

Whilst on the road and in the studio, she was studying Economics/System Science at UCLA which she then used to help create a career in post production and dialogue editing – she has won 2 Emmy’s as a dialogue editor and been part of Oscar winning sound editing teams (Mad Max Fury Road). She has also been writing and playing music intermittently with another immensely innovative bass player, Mike Watt, as dos…..

Now, and very excitingly, she is about to release her first solo album called, quite simply…..Kira: ten tracks of beautifully sculpted, innovative musicianship and personal expression that reveal her exquisite bass and vocals.

I'm so grateful to Kira for such an open and fascinating conversation about formative influences, identity, fears, experimentation, non-conformism, vulnerabilities, anxieties and how we live and work in a volatile and complex world.

S4 E5: Estella Adeyeri11 Oct 202101:00:21

Aside from her life as a fabulous multi-instrumentalist - bassist in Big Joanie, guitarist in Charmpit, drummer in the enigmatic Dirty Girl and solo synthesiserist (I just made that word up) - Estella Adeyeri is building communities and networks that are about providing opportunities and voices for the many, not just the few:

She is a member of the team behind Decolonise Fest, an incredible music festival organised by and for punx of colour, she's a board member of Good Night Out Campaign which is  all about safety on nights out, free from sexual harassment and violence, she volunteers at Girls Rock London which provides development and support for young and adult women, trans and nonbinary people.

Oh, and she's also a fantastic DJ.

Doesn't leave much time for Netflix….. 😎

There is a lot that we can all learn from Estella's perspectives and what really struck me was her growth mindset: she's a collaborator; she's getting more comfortable with taking risks despite her own tendency to be a perfectionist; she's experimenting with new ways of working with sounds and people and she is always learning from herself and from others.

S4 E4: Jason Reece04 Oct 202100:39:54

For the last 25 years, Jason Reece has been producing an outstanding stream of expansive, cinematic, experimental records that have kept fans excited, looking forwards and on their toes. His approach to music is that history never repeats itself (although y'know, hardcore side projects are kinda not to be trifled with 🤐) .

He plays guitar, sings and hits the drums with ferocious precision.

His band, And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, are in equal parts abrasive, thrilling, psychedelic, soaring, vulnerable, brooding and have an incredibly sophisticated eye for melody.

Each album is a magnus opus and each song is its own magnus opus. Put the lights off, switch your phone off and let yourself fall into your own personal odyssey.

S4 E3: Alton Jenkins20 Sep 202100:59:54

Alton Jenkins is a powerhouse of a drummer. A massively inventive, unique, avant garde, experimental, punk rock, psychedelic, melodic percussionist noisemaker and a lynchpin of that very creative and experimental Austin scene.

Having been in Future Death (wow, you really should check them out), he’s now working with the incredible TaSz Muerte of BLXPLTN (who you will remember from Season 1) on a new project which is excitingly called……. Fuck Money.

Alton is fusing lots of different elements to create music that really can’t be put in a box and many will be bored with me saying this, but hey, this is where the really exciting stuff is happening.

It's an honour to talk to Alton and to listen to his fabulously thoughtful and progressive world view.

S4 E2: Kirsty Allison13 Sep 202101:03:37

"The greatest cultural beacon this planet has produced” - Irvine Welsh

"A modern day Patti Smith" - Johny Brown, Band of Holy Joy

Kirsty's work explores the power of the free individual, unconstrained by straitjacket of institutionalised, homogenised culture. She is the chief editor of the great counter culture bastion, Ambit and founded Cold Lips and the Vagrant Lovers. She is also a huge literary contributor to MÜ Magazine. She spends her time in London and Berlin.

Her first novel, Psychomachia, is an unputdownable tale of the REAL '90's rock n roll scene, told through the eyes of Scarlett Flagg, a woman brutalised by an era where sexual violence, money and fame at all costs and impenetrable patriarchal cronyism roamed free and unencumbered to lure, screw over and jettison women. It's a fabulous, very personal and emotional read.

Confrontational, visceral, a hugely progressive thinker and always one step ahead of the rest of us, I feel very honoured to have Kirsty on the podcast.

S4 E1: Donald Johnson06 Sep 202101:24:08

Is there a better way to kick off Season 4, than with Donald Johnson, the rhythm-and-beats maestro of A Certain Ratio?

This episode has bags of laughs and stories. It's also a compelling masterclass in the power of the experimental mindset and the extraordinary journey that it can take you on in life. Curiosity, adaptability, mental agility, trusting one's own judgement, strong relationships, imagination, open mindedness, resourcefulness, accepting and understanding, collaborative - I'm struck by how these are the essence of Donald's mindset.

A Certain Ratio are one of the few pioneers and innovators that not only survived, but thrived in the aftermath of punk. For me, it’s their individual and collective experimental approach to creativity that’s at the heart of this and, as Donald puts it, their fear of being boring that pushes them to a different level. And they're still pushing the boundaries 40 years after forming.

In short, it was a joy and an honour!

S3 E10: Colleen Green30 Aug 202100:46:50

To round off Season 3 (yeah, I know!), we've got the fabulous Colleen Green.

BREAKING NEWS: Colleen reveals all about what this means: ”Did I ever send your shirt? I think I did. But maybe I didn’t. Sorry 'bout that”.

Ah, seriously, Colleen is one of my fave artists. A natural born songwriter with the lo-fi buzz of The Strokes, the glorious three-power chord cool of Ramones and the effortless melodies of Veronica Falls. Her songs are funny yet intensely personal stories of her journey to become the best version of herself, a theme continued on her new record, Cool (to be released on 10 September 2021 and the follow up to 2015's I Want To Grow Up).

Colleen has been living with an auto-immune condition since she was 24. I feel fatuous saying that this has changed her life - of course it has.

Her thoughtfulness, humility, gratitude and resilience are hallmarks of her warm personality. She has made these changes work for her, not against her.

Colleen's analogy of a phoenix is a vivid reminder of how our survival is often outside our control.  I'm grateful that she talks so openly about it.

S3 E9: AY Young23 Aug 202100:50:25

AY Young is a producer, singer, songwriter, entertainer, and entrepreneur.

He is also the founder of the Battery Tour which is a music tour powered by renewable energy. He has performed over 800 gigs powered by renewable battery power and, through this and other fundraising, has provided clean energy to global communities that do not have reliable access to stable sources of power. He has also been named by the UN as one of its 17 Young World Leaders, one each for the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

It's fascinating listening to AY talk about his early influences and how he maintains a positive mindset, resilience and energy for negotiating with governmental and corporate institutions on what have become highly challenging and politicised sustainability issues.

As a former social intrapraneur, I feel the rollercoaster of emotions that AY is going through. It's a battle to make progress from comments such as "Wow, love your project, man, it's so awesome" to actual tangible action like funding and real participation.

It's a hard, hard battle. You have to be persistent, resilient, focussed, know your shit 1001%, hard nosed and be complete pain in the ass to the people whom you want to get on your side.

And have vision.

As Mos Def said: "Comfortable people do not become revolutionaries".

S15 E6: Alicia Hyman & Jed Smith of Jeanines20 Jun 202501:03:59

Nostalgia is something that I ponder a lot as I get older – I’ve got way too much time on my hands. But it’s such a layered emotion of experiences, some vivid, some half-forgotten and some probably embellished. The band you never got to see live. A long-lost lover. How good you didn’t look in that army surplus jacket. Summer road trips. Friends lost. That gig that ended in a riot.

I’m gonna read out some lyrics from a song by the Buzzcocks called ……..”Nostalgia”

“About the future I only can reminisce
For what I've had is what I'll never get
And although this may sound strange
My future and my past are presently disarranged
And I'm surfing on a wave of nostalgia for an age yet to come”

Nostalgia for today, knowing that it won’t last forever. Future nostalgia. Seeing a band for the first time in a small basement, buying the t-shirt and anticipating that a future generation is going to do the same.

I think I’m of a generation where I’m seeing music cycles reinvent themselves, come full circle, younger generations liking the same music I liked when I was their age, whatever you wanna call it. So I’m seeing this connection with my past memories, some good, some horrible (that’ll be Britpop). Only kidding, but there are some songs I can’t play because the memories are too hard. But that’s life and that’s the beautiful power of music.

The songs of Jeanines make me feel like I’m flicking through a photo album of my life. Their songs very infrequently clock in over the 1 minute 30 second mark (which totally works for me) and makes it all the more remarkable that they fit in such addictive, poignant melodies and harmonies to perfectly craft their songs. Check out their upcoming, third album, How Long Can It Last, for a perfect 13.

It was a pleasure to have Alicia and Jed from the band with me.

S3 E8: Du Blonde16 Aug 202100:57:58

Du Blonde, aka Beth Jeans Houghton, is a massively talented and creative multi-instrumentalist,  singer, videographer, animator, designer, producer, label owner and ultra DIY-er.

Their third and latest album, Homecoming, feels just like that. It feels less introspective, more triumphant and defiant than even the last release, Lung Bread for Daddy, in 2019. Consistently dealing with subjects that are personal, bruising and heartbreaking, Homecoming feels like those subjects are now being faced off with more of a spirit of defiance and resilience.

It's got bags of collaboration in true Du Blonde style - Shirley Manson, Ezra Furman, Andy Bell and, of course, the Farting Suffragettes. Musically, it’s a beautiful pop record with plenty of distortion, fuzz and hooks to keep us lo-fi punks happy. Think Mary Chain, Mamas and Papas, surf, soul, Bad Religion oozen-aah's.

It’s been fascinating watching Beth's evolution over this trilogy of Du Blonde releases, so expect the unexpected with the new EP, Baby Forever, which is due for release on 27th August 2021.

S3 E7: Jenny Valentish09 Aug 202100:58:25

This is a bit of deviation from what we’ve been doing so far but a) there is a music industry connection and b) change never harmed anyone c) it’s an ace story and d) I’ve got an ace guest

Jenny Valentish started her working life in the music industry starting her own fanzine - cheekily called "Slapper: The Groupie’s Guide to Gropable Bands" and then writing for Dazed and Confused, NME, Time Out and doing artist bios, various stints in music publicity for artists like Swans, Jimmy Cauty, Bill Drummond and Afghan Whigs and over the last few years she has become a speaker, coach and author. She’s written 3 books. Her 2017 memoir called Woman of Substances in which she uses scientific research and theories and her own experiences, to investigates the paths that, in particular, women take into and out of addiction.

Her latest book is a follow up to Woman of Substances and is called Everything Harder Than Everyone Else, which follows people doing the things that most couldn’t, wouldn’t or shouldn’t. By delving into their extreme behaviour, there’s a lot that us mere mortals can learn about the human condition.

It's a rollercoaster read of experiences with a neuroscientis, performance artists, pornstar turned fighter, architect, BDSM Dom, bare knuckle fighter, wrestler and bodybuilder.

We're gonna talk about what Jenny learnt, what we can all learn and how her immersive journalism has challenged her own mindset.

S3 E6: Svetlanas02 Aug 202100:52:06

Svetlanas are one of the most dynamic and hard working bands around. Their music takes me back to the glory days of 1980’s hardcore and skatecore - one of my favourite eras.  A live Svetlanas show is unforgettable: it's like being in an incendiary cyclone of buzzing, distorted  guitars, pummelling drums and bass and, of course, the electrifying stage presence of Olga. All of this, plus never compromising on their core values and belief systems means Svetlanas have built a community of followers that is like a family.

As Olga quite correctly reminded me, they are "the most dangerous band in the world".

It was a huge honour to welcome Olga, Diste and Steve of Svetlanas!

S3 E5: Zia McCabe (Part 2)26 Jul 202101:07:32

It's a massive thank you and welcome back to Zia McCabe of the Dandy Warhols!

We talked so much in depth in Part 1 about formative influences, identity, skills and mindset that we couldn't possibly leave all unanswered questions about how this applies to Zia's musical creativity.

So here goes: we're gonna go from how Zia became appointed to the position of Secret Agent McCabe to basically protect the band from any nonsense (and there's a dynamite story about how she did that with merch scammers)….to how collaborations with Massive Attack helped her creativity…and how music has helped her to believe in her ability to adjust and adapt to big changes in her life.

These are 100% experiential observations that will help anyone who is thinking about their future direction in life.

S3 E4: John Dwyer19 Jul 202100:53:46

I was literally dancing round the room when John Dwyer agreed to be on the show.

John is a tireless, persistently forward-thinking warrior whose influence is impossible to quantify. The band that he founded and leads - Osees (Thee Oh Sees) -  is one whose influence is equally impossible to quantify.

He defines experimentation.

...Hurtling, bruising, brooding, hypnotic, phalanx of double drummers, muscular, veins of gold through granite, shifting ground, heavy, lush, stately, groovy, roar, whisper, fuzz fried...

 And my favourite….

... Cauldron of chaos

These are John and Matt's notes of the Osees' albums Orc and Mutilator….pretty accurate huh?

Thank you John, this was a blast!

S3 E3: Meredith Graves12 Jul 202101:07:02

I was thrilled when Meredith Graves agreed to be on my podcast and I am even more thrilled to release her episode.

Listening to Meredith is informative, funny and totally absorbing. Her views on the power of our mindset is fascinating and of massive importance to how we think about our life.

For me, her infinite fascination and curiosity with our world is motivated by her drive to learn, challenge, grow, improve and make our world a more inclusive and accepting place. She breaks things up to see the constituent parts and then reconstructs them in her world view.

Meredith is a writer, purveyor of magik, tarot explorer, witchcraft practitioner, seamstress, risk taker, hardcore noise maker, lifelong rule breaker, journalist, TV presenter and currently Director of Music at Kickstarter.

S3 E2: Adamski05 Jul 202101:09:21

We’re going from punk rock to acid house to waltz to cyberbilly in this episode, so if that doesn’t get your creative thinking flowing, I’m packing in.

He formed his first band The Stupid Babies when he was 11, with John Peel playing their legendary 3 chord, kazoo soloing, song Babysitters. He then formed Diskord Datcord with his older brother Mark and Jonny Slut, releasing a cover of X-Ray Spex's Identity.

He visited Ibiza in 1988 and caught the burgeoning Balearic groove vibe and, as they say, the rest is history.

For me, Adamski's musical journey is one of paddling against the tide, anti-pigeonholing, anti-establishment with a strong love for futurism and technology.

And we don't mention or talk about Seal and THAT song (well, not much because it's been done to death). But we do talk about the link between David Cameron, gurning and dog's bottoms, Happy Mondays, Ian Dury, Poly Styrene, Donny Osmond, appearing in Titbits and mistaking Emerson, Lake and Palmer for the Sex Pistols.

Even more exciting than finding out more about the person behind the music and listening to his wonderful, funny stories of his time in the industry and formative influences, is that this is the first podcast to use the word "epiphoniphically".

S3 E1: Thor Harris28 Jun 202100:58:13

So stoked to open up Season 3 with a legend who embodies what life is about.

More than anything else, Thor Harris inspires a life of positivity, a community builder for the many, not the few. Not just in his East Austin neighbourhood, but worldwide.

He is a multi-instrumental musician – drums, percussion, xylophone, vibraphone, marimba, clarinet, oboe, orchestral bells. He’s also a massively creative carpenter, plumber and artist and many, many more things.

His Twitter is a riot of joy.

He’s played and collaborated with Swans, Shearwater, Bill Callahan, Shahzad Ismaily, Anna Rossi, Jarboe, Amanda Palmer and Ben Frost amongst others. His current collective, Thor & Friends, with Peggy Ghorbani and Sarah Gautier is a master class in improvisation, experimentation and community sharing.

S2 E10: Audrey Campbell21 Jun 202101:02:23

Right! What a way to finish off Season 2, fizzing and crackling with energy and humanity.

Audrey Campbell and her band, Pleasure Venom, are making some of the most dynamic, immersive, progressive and genre-busting music around. The music is honest, raw, beautiful and it’s about immersing their listeners into their experiences.

I've got massive respect and love for Audrey. Listening to her talking about her mindset, self belief, DIY, being in control of what you choose to do, humanity, fans and her evolution is an education and totally fascinating. I hope you get as much out of this as I did.

S2 E9: Jesus Hooligan14 Jun 202101:00:52

With the mighty Jesus Hooligan, you can expect a lot of noisy creativity, collaboration, participation and human emotion. And unsatisfying Facebook breakfasts.

Stephen Brunton started making his own music using sounds that he liked from materials that he worked with – barrels, angle grinders, chains, metal tubes, tanks.

The tribal, primal rhythmic sound from hitting these things gives everyone who is participating – either actively or passively - a feeling of connection with others.

It was a total blast talking to Stephen. Open your mind and open your body to a different way of creating music and feel the power of human connection.

S15 E5: Dalila Kayros & Danilo Casti13 Jun 202501:14:55

Over the last 10 years, I’ve been undergoing a - for me at least - massive transformation and I’ve been thinking a lot about what identity means – the identity that I present to the public, the identity that I present to my friends and family and the identity that I present to myself. With that comes a need to face yourself if you are going to find freedom.

Our brains like to compartmentalise things and I think this is why we often get defined by society by our work or what we do. I mean, who hasn’t felt their blood run cold at the question “So, what do you do?”… “well, I’m an accountant and I’m also a grindcore enthusiast”. Whaaaaat?? The reaction of horror! And we start to believe how we get defined, it gets normalised.

And it’s the same for music genres – it’s easier to compartmentalise - they’re hip hop, they’re prog, they’re folk, but it’s so reductive.

So the whole definition of oneself becomes an inhibiting self fulfilling prophecy

I know for me it took courage to be comfortable with self-evolution, to transform myself according to what my body and mind is telling me and to ignore the voices of society to whom I had presented versions of myself. And only when we all have that fluidity, that freedom in ourselves, can we get to a world where the destructive forces subside and we make progress.

The music of Dalila Kayros is like an evolutionary odyssey…from the beginning to the end of a song, of an album and, when I think about it, an entire catalogue.

For me, Khthonie - the latest album - achieves a remarkable portrayal of perhaps what it’s like to be in a world that is transforming and equally what it’s like for oneself to be transforming  – moments of turbulence and tenderness, it feels like I’m on a precipice staring down into a black hole, there’s the mysticism, the beauty, the fantasy, the malevolence, the fear and the euphoria. I want to pick one track - Corpus Sonorum – which closes the album and, for me, sonically depicts the knife edge on which we live, how quickly and easily we can descend into hell. Or are already on our descent into hell. From a spiritual perspective, it feels like the soundtrack of Kali Yuga and a manifestation moral decline and self-destruction. Maybe you’ll feel differently, but it really is a remarkable piece of work - as is the whole album.

This entire conversation with Dalila and her long term collaborator, Danilo Casti, is an education on improvisation, experimentation and dealing with being outsiders.

John Robb is an ideas machine. Spending an hour chatting with him is the most entertaining, mind-opening experience.

He is a music journalist, author, speaker, social commentator and musician with The Membranes. Their latest record "What Nature Gives…Nature Takes Away" is a huge  dystopian and poetic piece of work with choral arrangements that are as majestic as they are experimental.

S2 E7: Zia McCabe31 May 202101:10:45

This was so much fun.

Zia McCabe is an international treasure. A truly awesome, Vinyl Factory glasses-wearing, effortlessly cool, rock n roll veteran. She plays keyboards, percussion and bass in one of the legendary rock n roll bands…..

The Dandy Warhols have always paddled against the tide, been firmly unconventional, firmly counter-culture, anti-pigeon-holing, yet always cool, treated experimentation as their slightly off-centre but “couldn’t live without you” housemate and always followed their musical instincts.

Hip shaking sonic rebels where you don't know what you'll get, but at the same time you do know what you'll get.

And importantly…..Zia is also a qualified real estate advisor. If you wanna buy real estate in Portland, Oregon, go see A To Zia Real Estate.

In this episode, we're talking about growing up, formative influences, finding identity, self belief, emotional intelligence, making the most of our skillset, bad car advertising…….and Lars Vegas.

S2 E6: Gemma Thompson24 May 202100:55:49

The opening chord of "Fuckers"  is the prelude to a hypnotic 10 minute ceremony. The architect of that shamanic cascade of tense reverb is my guest today - the amazing Gemma Thompson.

Gemma is the highly acclaimed, powerful and inventive guitarist and songwriter in Savages, the band nominated for a Mercury Prize on two separate occasions for their albums, Silence Yourself (2013) and Adore Life (2016). Her deliciously intoxicating guitar work gives a strong hint of her love of experimenting with sound textures.

It was fascinating to talk to Gemma and listen to her endless love for learning, knowledge and experimenting with new ideas and ways of constructing her sonic assaults.

We also talk about how awesome Savages' song Fuckers is and how it shows up Gemma's sonic power (well, I banged on about it, Gemma's too modest...).

Sound experimentation has become the characteristic of Bashan - Gemma’s latest musical collaborative with her husband Sam Sherry and his brother, Adam.

Gemma is also a multidisciplinary artist who works with drawing, printmaking (like intaglio and lithography) and sound to record sensory experience of place.

A sonic, visual and tactual scientist who just also happens to be a creative genius.
