| Turning Points. Finding Under-served Needs when there is Disruptive Change in your Industry. | 08 Jun 2020 | 00:06:19 | |
There are two ways to find opportunities. You can scan the want ads and hope someone will give you a job or you can take advantage of disruptive change in your area of interest, and position yourself to be valuable within that specific space. In the late 80's Design Engineers had to learn how to think differently. They were using drafting tables and thinking in 2D space and when the revolution in workstations happened, they had to start thinking in 3D space. The newer people had an advantage because they were trained in the 3D space. Later, the iPhone ushered in a whole new way of connecting with the internet and the folks that were able to think differently, were better able to take advantage of the new technology. Recently, in the world of Project Management, there is a movement away from traditional "waterfall" approaches to a concept called "Agile Project Management". Agile, like other disruptive changes, requires a new way of thinking. And just think of the opportunities that will emerge from the "Black Lives Matter" movement as the Global Economy pivots to respond to injustice in positive ways. Bottom line, look for disruptive changes in your areas of interest. Be open to a new way of thinking. Prepare yourself for the new approach and you will be able to capitalize on the change and truly take advantage of the new environment. Good luck.

| Step One - Think like an Entrepreneur | 27 Jun 2020 | 00:08:37 | |
Step one is possibly the hardest of the 9 steps. It requires you to choose to make a personal change in how you think. Changing how we think can be very difficult but if we are not prepared to change our thinking, we really cannot expect to get different outcomes. It all starts with how we think and so this step gives you 9 different elements associated with thinking like an entrepreneur. Take some time to listen to the podcast, and then reflect on what we are saying. Make the commitment to think differently and you will be much more successful in implementing the following 8 steps. Good luck.
| Learning to Survive, Adapt and truly Flourish when confronted by change | 13 May 2020 | 00:06:20 | |
Change Management is actually a bit of an oxymoron. We really do not manage change but rather manage how we deal with change. Whether you are being discharged from the military, or are a returning citizen, you are probably being confronted with major changes. This podcast will introduce you to a model called: Survive, Adapt and Flourish. It is a way to help you deal with the inevitable "Valley of Despair" that we all tend to experience when faced with change in our lives. Don't be a victim of change. Embrace it and use this model to help you be more in control when confronted by change.
| |||
| Step Two - Managing the Winds of Change | 29 Jun 2020 | 00:05:41 | |
Learn about a model to help you navigate the winds of change that will inevitably occur when you try to change your mindset, and your behaviors, in order to think more like an entrepreneur. Building on the Kubler-Ross Change Model, we delve into the concepts of Surviving, Adapting and ultimately Flourishing in a new mindset that is empowering and growth oriented. Take some time to listen and then reflect how this model can serve you as you choose to take on more change in your life.
| |||
| Step Three - Understanding your Preferences | 01 Jul 2020 | 00:08:14 | |
Take some time to truly reflect on what is important to you in your career. Many times we wind up doing things because of family pressure or because we know we can get a job, but we do not listen to our hearts and truly understand what it is that we want to be doing. In this podcast we review some of the elements that you might be experiencing in your Career Dilemma and how to overcome those challenges. Also, begin to explore the benefits of networking and doing informational interviews in helping you gain a better understanding of your career calling. As a reminder, here are some resources that you might want to use the following. onetonline.org to get information on different careers and https://tinyurl.com/VetsandRC to connect with us and let us know how we might be better able to serve you. Good luck.
| Step Four - Identifying your Personal Brand | 03 Jul 2020 | 00:06:04 | |
We all have a personal brand. It is what people say about us when we are not in the room. Is your brand what you want it to be? Are you taking steps to know what it is and ensuring that it gets communicated when you meet someone? Learn about taking the information from the prior three steps and incorporating some of that content into your external message. Good luck.

| Step Five - Developing your Personal Value Proposition | 05 Jul 2020 | 00:06:43 | |
Don't be turned off by the term Value Proposition. I realize that it is business jargon, but we all look at the value proposition that a good or service has when we choose to buy it. Is the value greater than the price or less than the price? How you answer that question will determine your degree of satisfaction with the value you have received. It is the same thing in the job market. Learn to develop a Personal Value Proposition that is Compelling, Valuable, Relevant, Current and Expansive. Also, give thought to how your Value Proposition has a positive impact on People in the organization, the Customer and/or the Profitability of the Business. Good luck.
| Step Six - Identifying the Under-served Need | 06 Jul 2020 | 00:05:58 | |
This is not about dusting off your resume and then sending it to as many leads as you can find in the hopes that someone will take pity on you and give you a job. That approach puts them in control. I Inc, is all about you being in control. And, sometimes, that might create a little anxiety. if it does, you might want to go back and listen to the first three steps again. This is where the proverbial "rubber meets the road". Where you take control and source opportunities that meet your needs and value proposition. It is not easy, but once you master this approach, you will have more opportunities than you can handle, and that is definitely the right place to be. Good luck.
| Step Seven - Telling your Story in Written Format | 07 Jul 2020 | 00:07:26 | |
Now it is time to take your story to the job market. In this step we will be talking about how you can use written media to communicate your story. The top three tools that you will be using are: 1. Your Resume, 2. Your Cover Letter and 3. Your Email. Be sure to think about how you want your story to be told and do not just list a bunch of facts. Craft a story that is engaging and will make someone want to read about it. And if you want to play around with a cool tool, check out: http://www.wordle.net/ It will create a word cloud of a written document. Put your resume, or your cover letter, or any other written documentation that you are using in your job search, into the application, and see if the word cloud agrees with the key points that you are trying to convey. Good luck with telling your personal story in written form.

She has a great story to tell.
| Step Eight - Telling Your Personal Story Orally | 08 Jul 2020 | 00:07:42 | |
In addition to networking and opportunities to share your elevator pitch, the interview context is the most significant opportunity you will have to tell your personal story. Before the interview be sure to research the organization and prepare some questions that you want to ask. During the interview you might get a "situational" question or a "behavioral" one. A situational question is exactly what it says, i.e. a hypothetical situation. When they ask that kind of question, they are looking for leadership. Use the VALUE framework to describe how you would handle the situation. V - Vision, Al - Alignment of Resources, U - Understand, ensure everyone truly understands what is going on and E - Enactment - make it happen. For the Behavioral questions, use the model STAR. Situation, Task, Action and Result. And be sure to follow up after the interview with a thank you message. If you want to learn more about interviewing techniques, check out the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZT68iezmHnE Good luck.
| Step Nine - Telling your story using Social Media | 09 Jul 2020 | 00:05:23 | |

Social media is a must in today's job market and LinkedIn is the best tool for you to be seen by recruiters. Mike shares some great insight into further understanding of the idea of being an entrepreneur of your career. In fact, he challenges our listeners to think like a problem solver as a way to make the entrepreneurial mindset more relevant to all of us. We are all problem solvers, and when we approach the job from that perspective, it is very easy to then talk about the value you can bring to the position. His company, Detroit Audio Lab was founded to make a difference...to the environment, to local economies, communities, and customers. In collaboration with local suppliers, Detroit Audio Lab transforms reclaimed wood and sustainable materials into state-of-the-art audio products. With Detroit Audio Lab, Mike Bauer, founder and CEO, has leveraged over 40 years of global business experience to bring audio manufacturing “back home”. This culminated in a desire to create those opportunities at home. With its rich history of manufacturing, music and audio (and as a metro-Detroiter himself), Mike knew Detroit was the perfect place to start. Detroit Audio Lab proudly manufactures and sells premium audio equipment—locally designed, engineered, and hand-constructed. | Creating your own personal brand | 17 May 2020 | 00:04:42
Jeff Bezos is quoted as saying that "your personal brand is what people say about you when you are not in the room". We all have a personal brand. The key is to decide what you want yours to be and then nurture it. Just like companies nurture their brands, you want to give yours the love and attention that it deserves. Take some time to reflect on what is important to you, write it down, and then craft an elevator pitch that reflects your brand. Then, you are ready to use it when you are working on your resume, or participating in a networking event, or even answering questions in an interview. Let your brand guide and inform your decisions that you are in integrity with what you hold as important in your life. Good luck.

| Listen to Huda Kattan, CEO of Huda Beauty, talk about pursuing passion and purpose in your career. | 16 Sep 2020 | 00:15:02 | |
After graduating from the University of Michigan in Dearborn, Huda Kattan moved to Dubai in 2006. A few years later, she moved to Los Angeles where she studied makeup. Among her clients were celebrities such as Eva Longoria and Nicole RIchie. Huda then returned to Dubai where she became employed by Revlon as a makeup artist. In April, 2010, upon the advice of one of her sisters, Huda started a beauty-related blog which she named "Huda Beauty" on which she would post makeup tutorials and tips. In 2013, Huda founded a cosmetics line which, like her blog, is also called "Huda Beauty. Her first product, a series of false eyelashes, was released through Sephora. The Huda Beauty label achieved success with the sales of the false eyelashes, which were famously worn by Kim Kardashian. Huda's company, which is based out of Dubai, later began to offer other beauty products, including eye shadow palettes, liquid lipsticks, lip liners, highlighter palettes, foundations, concealers, baking powders and liquid eye-shadows. Huda achieved popularity on Instagram, attaining more than 35 million followers as of 2019. Huda is ranked #1 on the "2017 Influencer Instagram Rich List", earning $18,000 for each post of sponsored content. Huda has been described as "a Kim Kardashian West of the beauty influencer economy", and was declared one of the "ten most powerful influencers in the world of beauty" by Forbes magazine. She was chosen as one of "The 25 Most Influential People on the Internet" by Time magazine in 2017. In 2018, Huda began starring in her own original Facebook Watch reality series entitled Huda Boss alongside her family. Needless to say, I was thrilled when she agreed to do an episode for I Inc and Beyond. She openly shares many of her leadership philosophies as well as her belief that we all should strive to achieve both our passion and our purpose in our lives. Hope you enjoy the episode and good luck with your own pursuits.
| Hear about an upcoming TV show that covers veterans transferring into civilian life. | 25 Sep 2020 | 00:05:01 | |
I am excited to share that PMI will be featured in the Lifetime television program Military Makeover: Operation Career on 28 September and 16 October at 7:30 AM ET hosted by Montel Williams. Operation Career captures the stories of military veterans transitioning out of the military and into civilian life. PMI’s segment features our very own membership product manager and military spouse, Kerry Brooks, and PMI member and veteran, Eric “Doc” Wright, who share their experiences with the military and how PMI is a valuable partner to US Military personnel, veterans, and spouses on the show.
PMI recognizes veterans’ unique qualities- strong leadership, strategic thinking, budget mindfulness, grace under pressure, and the ability to successfully complete a mission/project. These are all highly coveted skills in a project manager, and we want them to be part of the PMI family!
We know that as the world becomes more projectized, there is a high demand for qualified project professionals. Project management is an excellent choice of a profession for the hundreds of thousands of military personnel who transition each year, and their spouses, to consider as a life-long career. Many transitioning military service members are often underemployed and undervalued, leading to unsatisfying post-military careers. Many military personnel already possess the power skills and experience needed to become successful project managers, such as collaboration, communication, innovation and empathy.
With 1.3 million active US military and 18 million US Veterans, PMI has a dedicated program with resources military personnel need to successfully transition to civilian life. You can learn more about the program on our website at https://www.pmi.org/military.
When to Watch PMI’s segment will air twice on The Lifetime Network and will be available 24 hours a day following the airings on http://www.militarymakeover.tv/. Add the events to your calendar using these links: 28 September and 16 October.
Also, check out the following website and let me know if you are interested in the programs we are running for veterans: https://tinyurl.com/VetsandRC
I hope you’ll join me in watching and you are able to take advantage of the programs that we are running.
Good luck. | |||
