A film so equally bad and incredible, it defies conventional critique; though that didn’t stop scores of audiences upon its release from doing just that. Join us as we talk about the films abysmal initial release and the ensuing damages it left in its wake, specifically to that of star Elizabeth Berkley’s career. But honestly, we chalk it up to a generation that just wasn’t ready for the camp gold that this film is, and a major misstep on the marketing department with how they sold the film. Plus, aggressive gesturing, so much sex it’s actually a turn off, and one incredibly out of left field sexual assault that really didn’t need to be here! Yes, we’re strapped in to watch the final days of Nazi Germany as it all comes crashing down on their stupid heads in the 2004 film “Downfall”. Join us as we talk about what a messy queen that Hitler was as we breakdown one of the most nuanced performances of histories greatest monster that we’ve ever seen. While moments of this film work to test the viewers sense of empathy; evoking moments of clarity akin to members of Jonestown in the final days on the compound in Guyana, it never fails to carry the salient reminder that “Yes, they are Nazi’s and yes, they deserve this.” Also discussed, the messiness of humanizing the monster, Fascism as a fashion statement first and foremost, and how DO you say “Goebbels?” ? This week on the pod we’re heading down under (Kinda) for a continued discussion on Video Nasties (But, not really) as we watched a classic in both New Zealand film and splatter horror in Peter Jacksons (yes, THAT one) 1992 Horror Comedy, Dead Alive! I Didn’t Need To See That: Return of the Dadcast! After a month hiatus while Pete ascends to fatherhood, we’ve replenished our tanks, recharged our batteries and are ready to subject our pure, clean bodies back into the swamp. Youth is wasted on the young, especially when the youth is too wasted to remember what the hell happened. This week on the pod, we’re closing out Bummer Summer with the granddaddy of cautionary tales to the restless youth of America with Larry Clark’s 1995 film “Kids”. Join us as we revel in the horror of what it’s like to experience this film through the lens of adults and reminisce on our own teenage fuckery. We’ll cover the very messy and questionable production history of this film and how the final product feels at once a true authentic representation of teens in America, and outright exploitation of those same teens. This week, bring the tissues and some Narcan because we’re about to overdose on sadness. This week we’re watching everyone’s favorite anti-drug PSA via way of Darren Aronofsky with his 2000 dram “Requiem for a Dream”. Join as Pete dives down memory lane with his first encounter with a movie that was so bleak it made him want to take a shower, and Aaron comes at this without the fondness of 2000’s filmmaking style. While we may not be able to agree on whether or not the film still works for a modern audience, we can absolutely agree on a few things. The score absolutely holds up, Marlon Wayans is way too ripped to play a drug addict, and there’s no such thing as a fun heroin movie. It also goes without saying that no matter what our feelings on this movie are, this is a film whose imprint can be felt on cinema even to this day. Plus, Spoilers for the new film “Eddington”, learn that James Gunn gives a shit about us, and sometimes people need to be in a psyche ward. Get ready because this one’s a sad one! This week on the pod, we’re heading overseas to bleak, cold world of Berlin in the 1970’s; but only for a moment before we break free to the sunny shores of… Wisconsin! Yes we’re continuing our mini-theme on breaking the facade of the American dream, only this time through the eyes of an immigrant seeking better opportunities and cheaper beer in the 1977 film; Stroszek. On today’s episode, we talk briefly about how Stroszek, and last week’s film “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” are in conversation with one another; and while in this film the American dream isn’t literally breaking your body, it sure is going to break your spirit. We learn just how dark a comedy can get as we watched Todd Solondz’s 1998 “semenal” film, “Happiness”. We sat down and watched the 2017 Chilean made, Rape-Revenge Horror film, “Trauma”. A special shout out, as this was a fan recommendation, we officially  got more than we bargained for! This movie seems to really wear its influences on the surface, pulling from such French Extremity films like “Martyrs” and “Frontiers”; and most notably “A Serbian Film”. While the film is notably low budget and at times weak in story, it’s more than effective in its shock, thoroughly entertaining in its splash of action and some great practical effects.. that is if you can get past its need to make you vomit and recoil throughout the duration of the film. That’s right, on today’s episode we dive into the notorious 1980 Found Footage-Horror Documentary film “Cannibal Holocaust”. We’ll dig through the myths and legends around the films perceived crimes while discussing some of the actual crimes this films director committed in the making of Cannibal Holocaust, on top of just overall being kind of a bastard man. Come One Come all to the flesh eaters ball. This month we’re capping off our year of themes with a tried and true cultural taboo just in time for the holidays; It’s Christmas with the Cannibals ya’ll! This month we’re digging into 2 films that highlight the fascinating, grotesque, and even horny topic of Cannibalism; Kicking things off with the 2016 coming-of-age horror film, Raw. Join us as we revisit one of our favorite directors, Julia Ducournau (see our coverage of her film “Titane” on one of our earlier episodes) with her debut film that got everybody talking, and even a few people vomiting in their seats. We discuss how Raw serves as a sort of dry run for themes we’ll see Ducournau continue in her follow up film, and how some of the most visceral moments of grotesquerie in this film aren’t even the cannibalism! This week we head out of the sheets and into the streets as we close out our coverage on the Nymphomaniac saga with Nymphomaniac Volume 2. This week we flipped the script, as Aaron watched the Theatrical cut and Pete watched the Directors cut with a full 54 minutes of extra content including extra double penetration, and possibly the most graphic abortion ever depicted on film. We’re in full Odyssey territory here folks. But it’s not all bad! While at times we both think this script is trying to just come off as “look at how smart I am” by just saying pseudo-intellectual things without any sort of clear indication or thematic through line, we still find this to be one of Von Trier’s Best films. Strong performances by the two female leads, a brash and cold representation of sex; and a whole lot of it at that, give this film a bite that few other films have. Also discussed on the episode are how refreshing it is to see this depiction of sex in media, the politics of cheating, and how Shia LeBeouf really should be kept away from the general public. This week on I Didn’t Need To See that, we close out our month of covering films on School Shootings (thank god) as we cover a lesser known tragedy and film (by American standards) and journey into the wild winters of Montreal, QC as we watched the 2009 film “Polytechnique”.  Based on the harrowing true story of the 1989 École Polytechnique Engineering school massacre, tune in today as we grapple with the true horror of what unfolded on that fateful day, and how film still serves as a means of education and call to action in a world largely numb to the daily onslaught of tragedy in the news. On brighter notes in the episode, we marvel at the technical competence show by director Denis Villeneuve long before he was known as one of the great modern directors. Also, we again faun over the days of smoking indoors as depicted in films, talk about how incels aren’t just America’s problem, and you can’t spell Manifesto without “Man”. Settle in gang, because Fall is here. That means cozy sweaters, crisp leaves on the ground, pumpkin spice lattes. And sadly, in some cases, the smell of gun smoke in the classrooms, as this month we decided to cover two films that cover what is truly the great North American tragedy of School Shootings. This week we start with 2003’s “Elephant”. Written and directed by Gus Van Sant, this film (which ultimatley started as a documentary about the 1999 Columbine High School Massacre) works as a placid yet horrifying day-in-the life portrayal. We also applaud the erie sound design and comps to last year’s “Zone of Interest”, as well as the dedication to stoic reality in acting over heightened drama. Also discussed are the actual banality of tragic events like this, our mixed thoughts on the ending of the movie, and how when the world was in shambles on 9/11, Pete just wanted to watch SpongeBob and Nickelodeon held it down.  All this and more on this week’s episode of “I Didn’t Need To See That!”

Kicking things off we watched 2021’s Psychological, Drama/Body Horror film “Titane”. Hailing from France, this film is a full on shock to your senses that it’s both visceral and tender in the same breath. We loved this movie, from its awesome soundtrack, memorable sequences (of which there are several), and nightmarish body horror elements, Titane is a ride you won’t soon forget. This movies got it all.. if all you wanted was really shitty Canada jokes and a man being turned into a walrus. Wait... actually? 

While this movie boasts some great performances from its lead actors, it has a hard time rising above its really dumb sense of humor and suffers from 1… very.. noticeable… pacing issue.

While anybody could make this movie, it’s a rare gem to be as effective at getting under your skin as this movie is. If Seasonal depression has been hitting you extra hard lately, this movie won’t help one bit because boy was this a sad one! Join us as we marvel at one of the lesser known Studio Ghibli films; but a Ghibli film no less. This movie is full of stunning animation, heartfelt and  relatable characters, and food, food, oh such delicious looking food! That being said, it’s still a film following two children who amble through the desolation of war in Japan. My Neighbor Totoro this is not. But much like this podcast itself; through the muck this film has its moments of joy along the way.
