Sergio asked a big question for this podcast reading: how to deal with his sense that his life lacked meaning. Yi’s response was quite a modest, domestic one: Hexagram 37, People in the Home, changing at the fifth line to 22, Beauty:

In this one, I spend some time discussing the ‘nuclear story’ of the moving lines – how you can find four component trigrams in a hexagram, and the hexagrams they create. Here they are (because this is a lot easier to follow when you can see it):

I cast this hexagram –

and by taking groups of consecutive lines, you can find four trigrams inside it:

– lines 1-2-3, 2-3-4, 3-4-5 and 4-5-6. So extract each of those trigrams, with the moving line included…

…and combine them into hexagrams. Each hexagram’s made from two overlapping trigrams:

And there you have the three nuclear hexagrams I talk about in the episode.

What do I need to know about this relationship as it is now?

The answer: Hexagram 32, Lasting, changing at lines 1, 3 4 and 6 to 41, Decrease.

There’s a lot to listen to, here: how Honey’s experiencing the tension between the two hexagrams, the realities of Lasting and her need for Decrease; how she recognises each moving line (especially line 6, which was much clearer to her than it was to me!); how the Steps of Change help her to ‘find herself’ at each stage; how an overall picture comes together.

If you’ve ever wondered what to make of an unchanging reading, this one could be helpful: we take our time exploring the hexagram’s atmosphere, its context – where it comes from, what it isn’t saying – and, most importantly, what Sasha recognises about it.

As we were talking about 45.5 –

‘Gathering together has a position.
No mistake.
No trust at all.
From the source, ever-flowing constancy.

– I showed Sarah this page of ancient forms of the character yong, ‘perpetual, ever-flowing’, which shows a human figure flowing with the river currents. The story it reminded me of was this one, from Zhuangzi.

Well, I’m still getting the hang of my new microphone (I hope), and recovering some voice after the seasonal cold, and experimenting with recording without a script… not sure about the merits of that one… but anyway, here’s podcast 4.

The question this time was about opening the channel for a reading – how to create space and allow the message to be heard. (Part of the preparation for the ‘Opening Space for Change‘ event.) Yi’s response: 59.1.2 changing to 42, which made for a much longer recording. The promised second half will be in the Jewelbox for Change Circle members within the next couple of days.

Here it is… I Ching podcast, episode 1. In future I’d like to add more sections to this – some interviews, feedback, shared experiences, maybe even some music like a real, grown-up podcast. A Yeeky thing I mentioned during this reading: the idea of a dabagua, or ‘big trigram’ hexagram. If you take the trigram dui, lake…

…and double each of its lines individually, in turn – from yang, yang, yin to yang+yang, yang+yang, yin+yin – then you have Hexagram 34:

In each hexagram formed this way – I mentioned this once before when I was writing about Hexagram 33 – it can help to think of it as a ‘giant trigram’ – and a giant lake seemed especially apt for a musician.

Answer: Hexagram 2, Earth, changing at lines 4 and 6 to 35, Advancing:

As Kat and I discussed this one in this latest podcast episode, we mentioned…

…and also the ancient form of a couple of words from the text: shi, ‘power’, as in the Image of Hexagram 2 –

– has two components: ‘strength’, and this one, which is purely phonetic, showing a human figure about to plant a seedling:

This episode of the podcast could also be entitled ‘light dawns in the end,’ as it took a while for me to join all the dots between the querent’s situation and the reading. It’s a great example of how Yi talks to the whole person, though, as well as answering the question.

Mukul asked, ‘What would be a good next step towards getting a new source of regular income?’ and Yi answered with Hexagram 13, People in Harmony, changing at line 5 to Hexagram 30, Clarity:

The listener’s reading for this episode has an unusual premise: Beebee was trying to work out why what she was trying to manifest in her life wasn’t happening. Where was the block? She asked,

“What actions are needed from me in order to achieve my desires?”
