This episode was bound to happen. As one of the greatest media satires in cinema history, it was only inevitable that Matt was going to pick Network to watch with Jess. She did her Master's thesis about reality TV...he knew she was going to have a lot of thoughts. A fifty year old film about network television should not be this relevant, and yet here we are: mad as hell and wondering when we won't take it anymore. Jess ponders that and a whole lot more. There's the capitalism and commoditization of everything, there's the lack of empathy in the entertainment world, there's concern for Howard Beale's mental health, and there's more info about MTV's The Real World that you (and Matt) didn't know about before. Orlando is a film that has grown in stature and gained a greater audience since it was released in 1992. Jess loves it, and has seen it many times dating back to her university days. Matt had not seen it, much to Jess' astonishment as she felt like it would be right up his alley. So she kept it for this episode where he could discover Orlando as a young man. Also as a young woman. Look, it's a long story and there's not really even much of an explanation. Just go with it, everyone else does. They will get the chance to talk about the role of androgyny in both the film's themes and casting choices, primitive ice skating, a wide variety of parallels and dichotomies the film uses, and how to properly break the fourth wall. Hopefully, by the end of this episode, you won't need to take a seven day long nap. Jess isn't new to Paul Thomas Anderson films. She and Matt did recently watch the most recent Best Picture winner "One Battle After Another", and she has seen a couple others in the past. How she missed Boogie Nights, one of his most acclaimed films, is anyone's guess. It might have something to do with her being in elementary school when this portrait of the 70's porn industry was released. Her mind wasn't yet in the gutter enough, apparently. But now she has seen it, and there's a lot she wanted to highlight: the concept of family both real and chosen, the shifting nature of people's identities, an all-time great ensemble cast, and whether or not any of these characters actually learn anything. Norma Rae is a pretty legendary movie with an iconic award-winning central performance that showed what a successful, crowd pleasing story in the "New Hollywood" era of the late 70s looked like. Somehow, despite LOVING this era, Matt had not ever seen it. Jess was shook. Mostly because Norma Rae Webster is pretty iconic to her. Also because standing on a table defying authority is her idea of a fun time on the weekends. As Matt and Jess have roots growing up in industry towns, they have a lot to relate to in this story and a lot to discuss: the demographics of those who embrace change, the role of fear in oppression, the real life echoes of Harlan County USA, and what it means to be respected. After being out for an entire calendar year and saving it for this very special 20th episode, Jess and Matt finally got to see Sinners. This is the second "I Can't Believe WE Haven't Seen" special episode, and they can't contain they're feeling for very long. Simply put: it lives up to the hype. Not only that, but it is deep and rich in so many different ways. Plus, none of the vampire sparkle! They dive into a lot: how the vampire mythos is utilized, music and sound as memories, returning to a small town, telling a story without telling you everything, and the many different examples of twinning. In typical Matt fashion, he went older...wayyy older, all the way back to 1934 for the legendary It Happened One Night. Turns out that, not only has it held up better than she could have imagined, but Jess might just have a new comfort movie. Mostly because a movie full of sarcastic banter and strong-willed leading women is comforting for her. Cue Matt's shock. They talk about the trials and tribulations of riding the Greyhound bus, the role of the newspaper as a character and cultural signifier, the Walls of Jericho, and comparing the film's leading lady to Bambi taking her first steps in the world. The 2010 Dreamworks animated film How To Train Your Dragon was one that Matt had never seen (much to the chagrin of his younger brother). There were poorly named Viking children, there were cute dragons that behaved likely puppies, and Scottish accents. In this episode, they dive into tradition versus knowledge, questionable war planning, and how NOT to raise your child. One of Matt's favourite films of all time is The Apartment, and he introduced it to Jess many years ago. So for this episode, they decided to share it with their friends Kim and Jason and bring them on the podcast to talk about it! It's the second episode with special guests, and even though there are four voices in it, they definitely share the airtime far more seamlessly than CC Baxter's coworkers did with "sharing" his apartment... There's a lot of great stuff to talk about in this classic Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine film from 1960: what office work used to look like, the array of very stylish glasses being worn, men behaving badly, the myriad of stellar characters, and Miss Olson (Kim's new hero). It also fits the time of year holiday-wise, and the film has some great moments humour-wise, story-wise, and otherwise...wise. We're heading back to the 1700's where Jess is going to get a taste of the classic 1984 period piece Amadeus, a fictionalized film revolving around Mozart. She had never seen it, and Matt was not able to successfully convince her to wear a powdered wig to watch it. Good thing, because they watched the Director's Cut (which Matt had also never seen) and three hours in a powdered wig does not sound like a good time for anyone. There is, however, some stellar costuming, acting, and (of course) music to go with all of these hair pieces. Jess gets to talk about the range of father-son relationships, the not-so-subtle religious overtones, genius versus madness, and the concepts of high- and low-brow art. It goes about as well as you would expect in an Australian post-apocalyptic setting. Jess has seen a couple of the newer James Bond films with Daniel Craig, but never anything starring the original 007, Sean Connery. He's pretty to look at and everything, but in a spy movie made primarily for a male audience interested in spy movies and "being cool" in the 1960's...well, I think you might have an idea how Jess felt about A LOT of this one. But this just means there is lots to talk about! There's Auric Goldfinger (great name), the arguable best Bond villain of all time, and his stalky Korean henchman Oddjob (even greater name), who may or may not be a fridge. There's the various women (with way more sexist names, mostly) that are not given a lot of agency. He would probably blame this on fantasy just not being his genre, but Jess isn't high on the genre either and she still watched the film when it came out. Either way, he's out of excuses now! Grab a handful of the most authentic Turkish Delight you can find (turns out that Big Turk bars are not so authentic...) as Matt and Jess discuss allegories, repressive British society, back hair treasure trails, and how big of a badass Tilda Swinton is. Steel Magnolias was HUGE in 1989 when it came out. Matt was only 7 years old, so he can perhaps be forgiven for not watching it then. His parents may not have approved of him hearing some of Ouiser Boudreaux's colourful language... There's a lot to talk about with this film! So many wonderful strong female characters, so many head-scratching decisions related to Easter eggs, so many times where the 1980s felt like the 1950s, and Shirley MacLaine...just give us all of the Shirley MacLaine. While she has seen many Pixar films, including most of the other ones released in the 2010s, Jess had never seen Inside Out. She was, however, very familiar with getting random songs and ad jingles stuck in her head for no good reason. Thankfully, this movie helped explain that! She felt seen...and attacked. As you can imagine with a movie about our own emotions, she had all sorts of responses! She was wheeze-laughing less than 3 minutes in because of Sadness (the character, not the emotion...), she was perturbed at Riley's parents, she was annoyed at Joy (the character, not the emotion...) for being a control freak, and she was emotional at Riley's imaginary friend Bing Bong ("That Cotton Candy Elephant Dolphin Thing"). Who would be her voice of Anger (the character, not the...look, you get it), and would it be constantly reading the newspaper?
