Send us a text

Have a few minutes to listen? Lisa & Staci talk about the reasons that boundaries are important in a not-for-profit organization:

Protecting the well-being of staff: Setting and maintaining healthy boundaries can help prevent burnout, stress, and other negative consequences that can result from overworking or taking on too much responsibility.

Maintaining professionalism: Boundaries help ensure that non-profit staff maintain professional relationships with clients, donors, and other stakeholders. This can help build trust and credibility with the community and ensure that the organization is operating ethically.

Avoiding conflicts of interest: Establishing clear boundaries can help prevent conflicts of interest or perceptions of impropriety that could undermine the organization's credibility or legal standing.

Preserving the organization's independence: Maintaining boundaries with donors and other stakeholders can help ensure that the organization is able to pursue its mission without undue influence or pressure from external sources.

Overall, setting and maintaining boundaries in a non-profit organization is crucial for protecting the well-being of staff, ensuring professional conduct, avoiding conflicts of interest, and maintaining the independence and credibility of the organization.

How To Keep Your Day Job Podcast Show Notes – S1 E6

In this episode of the How To Keep Your Day Job podcast Lisa interviews Catherine, a Canadian Certified Physician Assistant. She grew up in a small city in Ontario and completed her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing at Trent University. Upon completion, she was looking to pursue a career that would allow her more autonomy. That is when Catherine discovered the role of a Physician Assistant.

At that time, the role of a Physician Assistant was new in Canada and the University of Manitoba Master of Physician Assistant Program was in its youth. Catherine was drawn to the profession as she enjoyed working as part of a team and wanted to explore learning via the medical model. The role of the Physician assistant allowed her to switch between medical specialties.

Upon graduation, Catherine worked as part of a urology team before moving into primary care. She has been a PA for 10 years and is passionate about her role. She is an advocate for her patients, and as a PA she is able to improve access to quality care.

Episode #5 - TIME23 Dec 202100:12:05

Send us a text

This month’s podcast is not focusing on a career or how someone manages their day job. It focuses on time. There is never enough time. Don’t you agree?

No matter what you celebrate, December is a month to slow down. Staci speaks about slowing down and for her this is a time to reflect on wellness. When you do not find that balance or time to slow down, it can affect your mental health and coping.

Lisa speaks about time in the aspect of leadership. There is never enough time to accomplish what you need to in not-for-profit organizations. Lack of time can leave you feeling overwhelmed, and you can “hit your wall”. When we are overwhelmed, it highlights feeling unappreciated and then the time we give to our chosen field feels wasted without acknowledgment.

If you are overwhelmed in the service of others there are places that you can call:

Crisis Line                                                                     204-786-8686/Toll Free 1-888-322-3019

Manitoba Suicide Line                                               1-877-435-7170

If you are a not-for-profit leader in Canada and are interested in our leader’s collaborative, go to www.morningstarconsultant.com and click on our service page and our leaders lab.

There is a quote I really like, "Individually we are a drop, but together we are an ocean", Ryunosuke Satoro.

How To Keep Your Day Job Podcast Show Notes – S1 E4

In this episode of the How to Keep Your Day Job podcast Lisa interviews Michael McCallum, who went from crisis worker to social worker. Michael describes himself as a 53-year-old trans man. Married to a wonderful woman who happens to be his best friend. They work as a team to raise their five children.

Michael fell into social services at the age of 22. He started his journey as a group home worker. He went back to school in his forties, completing a Bachelor of Social Work on his fiftieth birthday.

Michael shared that when he was in his forties, he transitioned because he believed that the only way to truly help people was to completely live his life authentically. He says it’s been a bumpy road, but he has excellent people around him and that makes all the difference. He encourages you “to find your people (they will be the ones cheering you on) and allow them to support you.  Believe in yourself”!

November 13-19th is Trans Awareness week and the 20th is the Day of Remembrance. At Morning Star we hope to build safe environments for those who identify as transgender, two spirited, non-binary or gender non-conforming every day. At Morning Star we invite everyone to just be their authentic self!

Lisa and Michael talked about when things are a struggle, so we have listed some Manitoba specific supports.

How To Keep Your Day Job Podcast #3 – Show Notes

In this episode of the How to Keep Your Day Job podcast I interview Lisa about her experiences as a leader in the not-for-profit world.  We talk about what leadership looks like in the first 90 days of a new role, how to build a five-year plan and the biggest challenge of managing people. Lisa shares some of the tips and tools she uses to meet expectations and what makes her “geek out”.

At one point, Lisa talked about her experiences of living with ADHD. October is ADHD Awareness Month. ADHD & the term ‘deficit disorder’ puts ADHD in the realm of pathology, or disease. Individuals with ADHD do not have a disease, nor do they have a deficit; to be honest most have a ton of attention. The challenge is learning how to control it & that is why Lisa talks about how she organizes her tasks and projects.

If you found the information in this episode helpful and want more, find us on our website or check us out on social media. On our website you can find out more about our career coaching and courses such as Executive Director Onboarding, New Manager Boot Camp, Professional Boundaries and more.

As we move from bricks and mortar to more of an online, virtual presence we will be adding to our programs and supports so keep checking back. We are always offering free consults and like Lisa said, you won't hear a sales pitch during our consults.

Send us a text

In this heartfelt episode, we take a reflective journey through 2024—exploring the highs, the lows, and the powerful lessons that shaped us both personally and professionally. As we recount our top 10 moments, we share stories of triumph, resilience, and a fair share of challenges that tested our resolve.

While we did not mention him in the podcast, we want to take a moment here to honour the life and legacy of Chief Justice Murray Sinclair, whose passing this year left a profound void in the hearts of so many. A gift to the work of truth, reconciliation, and justice, his contributions remind us of the importance of perseverance, empathy, and the enduring fight for equity. His loss mirrored the challenges of 2024, a year that brought both sorrow and strength.
