Potty Training and Sleep Made EASY with Jamie Glowacki10 Feb 202600:25:53

Today I’m interviewing potty training expert, Jamie Glowacki about potty training and sleep.

Jamie's roots are in social work where she worked with dual diagnoses mothers and their kids. It’s where she learned to teach potty training on a broad scale, learned child development and parenting. She wrote 'Oh Crap! Potty Training' when she realized her very own community was wildly misinformed about potty training. She is celebrating the 10 year anniversary of her popular potty training book.

If you are consistently staying with your child while they fall asleep, this actually makes it harder for kids to get to sleep.

Help you and your child get more sleep by listening to this episode.

When is Too Old to Sleep Train?13 Jan 202600:07:35

What age is too old for sleep training? If you’re wondering when to start sleep training, let’s start with this: your child’s need for sleep is more critical than ever.

Just because your toddler is out of the crib doesn’t mean their sleep habits should go out the window. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 25% of kids under the age of 5 don’t get enough sleep. 😮

If the optimal time to start sleep training was yesterday, the next best time is today. Here are three reasons why sleep training older children is not only doable but mandatory.

7 ways to Manage PARENTAL PREFERENCE at Bedtime | Awesome Little Sleepers06 May 202500:06:32

Parental preference at bedtime is VERY common among toddlers and preschoolers. I hear from families on a daily basis when their toddler prefers one parent (at bedtime).

If you have a toddler, chances are you’ve experienced this before.

Whether it’s getting dressed, getting dropped off at school, or just being pushed on the swing. Kids can be very persistent when it comes to their parental preference. 😑

Your child’s parental preference can show up with lots of activities, like going potty or holding hands to walk down the street, but BEDTIME tends to be one of the most difficult to navigate.

Dealing with strong parental preference at bedtime can really put a real strain on families.

Early Wake Ups | How to PREVENT EARLY MORNING WAKING in 3 year olds25 Mar 202500:07:05

So, how can you prevent early morning waking in your 3 year old?

You’re dead asleep and then you hear it - your bedroom door creaks open and you hear tiny footsteps coming straight for you. You open one eye and see that it’s 5:15am. Ugh. Why does this keep happening!!!

Do you just have an early riser? Are you destined to wake up at 5am for the rest of your life?

I can confidently tell you NO! Waking at 5am is not cool for anyone - kids or adults. And there are things you can do to fix it.

Kids should be able to naturally sleep until at least 6am in the morning. I know 6am may sound early to some but it’s biologically what our kids are set up to do. But for those of you with early risers who keep seeing the 5 o’clock hour every morning, sleeping until 6 might sound like a dream

Let's see how we can make that happen.

Toddler Daycare Naps Ruin Bedtime | Awesome Little Sleepers22 Oct 202400:05:55

Do toddler daycare naps ruin bedtime in your home?

Perhaps your toddler has stopped napping on the weekends and goes to bed at night pretty well. But your child is napping at daycare during the weekdays, and suddenly, bedtime has become a disaster!

Your sleep training needs a reboot.

You can’t get your toddler down until 9 p.m. or later, and sleep training at bedtime is a battle every night.

You’re not alone.

When kids transition away from taking naps, it feels like it throws their whole sleep schedule out of whack. It can be the cause of several toddler sleep problems.

I hear this complaint from families all the time. When their child naps at daycare during the week, bedtime is impossible. But on the weekend, with no nap, sleep training, and bedtime, is much easier.

The challenge is: many daycares are required by state laws or licensing to offer a nap, so it can leave parents in a bit of a pickle.

But there are ways around this.

Listen on for tips to help your toddler become an awesome little sleeper.

4 Hacks to Prevent Crib Climbing | Toddler Crib Safety Tips30 Jul 202400:05:46

Let's say that your 2-year-old climbed out of the crib last night. YIKES!

You’ve been dreading this day for a LONG time. You might think “Okay, it's time to move him to a toddler bed”

NOT SO FAST!

If you can keep your adventurous toddler SAFELY in the crib a little longer, you should do it. But we have to make sure they can’t climb out.

The freedom of the open toddler bed can be too much for young kids to handle.

Switching kids out of the crib too early can cause lots of sleep issues– like refusing to stay put at bedtime, suddenly needing you to stay in the room with them or waking up overnight. Or if you’re already having sleep issues with your crib-sleeper, the switch to the toddler bed will just intensify issues you’re already experiencing.

Kids who don’t sleep well in the crib, will sleep even worse in a bed.

So, if you can SAFELY keep your child in the crib without climbing out, do it.

Is Sleep Training Selfish?02 Jul 202400:01:23

Have you ever asked yourself “Is sleep training selfish?”  In this episode, you’ll learn about the health benefits of sleep for kids.

😴 If you’ve been stuck laying in your child’s bed for hours, waiting for them to fall asleep.

🛏️ Or waking up through the night to play musical beds.

🥱 Or welcoming a toddler into your bed at 2am and you’re sick of it, you may have tried to change things.

Now, if you’ve tried to change things and it hasn’t worked, you may have decided that your child just CAN’T sleep without you. Maybe they’re just too strong-willed or maybe they aren’t capable of sleeping independently for some reason. Or maybe you’re concerned that if you try and get out of this sleep situation that your relationship will be damaged.

So, you make a decision. And it may be an unconscious one. You decide that they must really NEED you at night. Not a preference but a NEED. So you’ve just given in and accepted it as your fate. This is your job.

And once you take it on as your responsibility, the prospect of trying to get out of it seems almost selfish.

And even if you’re exhausted and feel like a walking zombie who hasn’t slept through the night in a year, you STILL won’t change things because it feels selfish.

But what if getting your child sleeping through the night independently was the best thing for THEM?

What if working to get your child 10-12 hours of consistent sleep through the night with no wake ups was actually the healthiest thing you could do for them?

Are your kids afraid of the dark?  Being scared of the dark is common.  Here’s how to help kids overcome fear and be confident, solo sleepers.

A fear of the dark can start as early as 2 or 3 years old when kids' imaginations start to go wild. But, at this age, our kids aren’t mature enough to distinguish between their imagination 😈 and reality 😀.

It’s our job as parents to help. But lots of times we get this wrong and we end up actually encouraging their fear.

So if your child won’t sleep and you think they MIGHT be scared of the dark, keep listening…
