EP241: Dealing with the Challenges of Recruiting and Retaining Staff, with Raymond Martin30 May 202201:13:14
How to recruit and retain staff for salon businesses is the biggest challenge that our industry faces! I'm regularly hearing from salon owners who are saying to me, 'It's a crisis out there, 'We're having to go down the rent-a-chair model,' and most worryingly, 'We won't be able to keep our salon business open for much longer!' It's scary stuff that potentially could see many of these salons closing soon and with it, the reduction of future hair talent coming through. In this episode we will be addressing how to deal with the challenges of recruiting and retaining staff. To help me with this, I'm to be joined by Raymond Martin, a salon consultant with over 40 years salon ownership and training provider behind him. He now gives the tools for salons to succeed and be profitable. Today he's here to share with us his proven recipe method to help your salon business recruit and retain staff. Raymond owned one of the leading and salons and academies for over 4 successful decades in my hometown where I grew up and worked as a salon owner myself. I very much looked up to and admired Raymond as a respected businessman and hairdresser. He always seemed to have the knack of recruiting and retaining the very best hairdressers in our area. I'm keen to find out how he created a salon environment that hairdressers wanted to be a part of and grow with. I believe theres a lot that we can take from past thinkings and how we can adapt them to todays changing hair industry landscape. And this certainly rings true from this conversation.     A podcast produced by Hairy Media Productions  Thanks for Listening To share your thoughts: Leave a note in the comment section below. EP230: Fairness and Parity for the Hair & Beauty Sector – Meet the Salon Employers Association15 Feb 202200:55:38
On todays show we are speaking to some of the founding members of the Salon Employers Association (SEA). Created to ensure fairness and parity across all models in the hairdressing & beauty sector, will be learning the SEA aims and ideas to protecting and preserving the future of the industry. The SEA founding members joining me for this conversation are Co-Founder at The Chapel, Toby Dicker, Director at Alan d Hairdressing Education, Edward Hemmings and CEO at Hershesons, Luke Hersheson. We talk about some really big topics, including why the SEA is campaigning for salons with bricks and mortar premises working and employing PAYE staff and training future employees within the sector. We also talk about how the SEA feels our industry is poorly represented, with nobody campaigning directly for salons that pay the most tax and contribute to the future of our sector. I'm keen to do a little probing here as many say our industry is served by many other associations, but regardless SEA is doing fantastic work. So fantastic the SEA currently has 953 salons signed up, representing 10,458 employees. This honest and frank conversation with Toby, Edward and Luke will leave us with a better uderstanding of the SEA mission – a coalition of like minded salon business owners fighting for parity and the future of salons and those trained within them. It's a long journey to getting the recognition our industry truly deserves, but after listening to this episode today, it'll be a journey that you will want to be part of, too! .     A podcast produced by Hairy Media Productions  Thanks for Listening To share your thoughts: Leave a note in the comment section below. EP227: Pivot! Why It’s Time for a New Direction in 202224 Jan 202200:29:03
A drastic career change may not be for everyone. But gently pivot on your career journey might be just the change your life needs. As I once read in a book, "The only move that matters is your next one!" I love this and that’s why today I wanted to talk about ‘why it’s time to pivot in a new direction for 2022’. Life is packed full of surprising twists and turns. I don't know about you, but from time to time I do love a change of direction. For me this keeps everything fresh and exciting –– something that I'm currently doing right now. Yep, I'm pivoting again as I prepare for the biggest overhaul to How to Cut it since we launched the podcast in 2017. I know to pivot isn't easy, event if it feels right. If you know you need a new direction –– you can still feel the fear and some self doubt. But that's okay. If you don't feel this stuff, in some way you're probably not being honest with yourself. Pivoting your career is not for everyone. If it doesn't feel right, put it off until it does. If it does, embrace it. The new journey could take you to some new magical places that you just don't know exists right now. I've certainly found that to be the case. So if pivoting could be for you in 2022, then join me as we all go in a new direction together in the year ahead. Let's smash it!     A podcast produced by Hairy Media Productions  Thanks for Listening To share your thoughts: Leave a note in the comment section below. EP225: Know Your Strengths, Own It and Become a True Specialist with Sarah Spiers of Chaulk Education13 Dec 202100:55:24
Some of my favourite episodes here on the podcast are one's like today's. It is episodes where I get to chat to somebody who is not just a talented educator in hair colouring, with a deep understanding of the science behind it, but somebody who shares the in's and outs of owing your unique fingerprint and becoming a true specialist. Today's guest, Sarah Spiers co-created Chaulk education with Lianne Storer, because of being bored of the same way day in day out on how to do something. Sarah had learnt over the years that everyone is unique, everyone has something to give and if they have that support they can build their confidence and shine using their unique fingerprint. I thought it would be fab to unpack this today. Chaulk education ethos of being brand neutral that delivers hair science to the masses in a fun interactive way. I asked her questions you might ask if you're looking to find a spark for you to shine brightly by understanding nobody else can emulate what you do. It's your signature! As she says, "Do not compare and dim that light'. So if that sounds inspiring to you, this episode is a must listen. We will also get an emotional reveal in this conversation of a massive new direction for Chaulk education. Sarah is all about mentoring and empowering todays hair colourists to have no more of them 'fingers crossed moments' on the salon floor. It's all about being a true specialist in what you do!     A podcast produced by Hairy Media Productions  Thanks for Listening   Support the How To Cut It podcast by becoming a Patreon HERE   To share your thoughts: Leave a note in the comment section below. I'm so excited for this episode. We are covering a subject I wish I could have heard myself when I first started out I’m my hairdressing career. Because today I’m talking with International Celebrity Hair and Make-Up artist, Kevin Fortune, on how to work in the art of Session Hair Styling Across Fashion, Red Carpet, Film & TV. As the co-founder of the Kevin Fortune Hair Styling Academy in London’s West End, he seriously knows his stuff when it comes to the genre of hair and make-up. EP222: Why You Need to Charge Your Worth with Maddi Cook of Boss Your Salon22 Nov 202101:07:51
We all need to charge our worth. But lets be honest here, how many of you really are? This topic is to be the centrepiece of my conversation today with Maddi Cook of Boss Your Salon. Maddi is somebody I got to know over lockdown, and eversince I have become seriously impressed by. Because in getting to know Maddi, I've got to see how she is a mentor on a mission – teaching our industry how to stop winging it, and start thinking like business owners. Maddi Cook has taught thousands of hair and beauty pros how to price for profit, and set boundaries to prevent the dreaded burnout. So they can create the businesses they daydreamed of when they first started out! So some of the stuff Maddi shares in this episode may run counter with what you hear a lot of the time. But I think you'll find that when you really break down what she's suggesting, it makes a ton of sense. You'll hear about Maddi's origin story in hairdressing and the failures she went through that has led to become the salon business mentor she is today. She shares lots of insights she's learned along the way, including how to charge properly, and why she believes we need to be setting and enforcing boundaries and policies all resulting in giving us all better lifestyles. She even shares her thoughts on a more proportional representation of women in the industry. Maddi is full of so much of good advice, whether you're a salon owner or independent hair professional. This episode is great listen for us all! EP221: David Kinigson – The Most Famous Hairdresser You Have Never Heard Of!16 Nov 202101:05:30
This past week I interviewed David Kinigson, who is an amazing haircutter based in the America with great heritage in the industry. David has worked closely with great names at the Vidal Sassoon Fifth Avenue Salon,  New York in the 1970's and Vidal Sassoon himself contributed to David's iconic publication, The Hairctter's Handbook. David was once described as the most famous hairdresser you've never heard of. This made me smile lots. David is one of the founding members of the Intercoiffure North American Artistic Team and Cutting Council. His deep heritage gives him great wisdom and knowledge of the hair industry. This is what we are to be spoilt with in this podcast today. As someone who sees himself as a haircutter and not as a hairdresser, I had to get Davids thoughts on haircutting. He will also be taking us deeper into why we need to think inside the box, before we think outside of it. Plus he will share where he sees the hair industry in 2021. Someone I first connected with on Clubhouse, I really enjoyed this conversation with David. He has so much to share and all articulated beautifully.     A podcast produced by Hairy Media Productions  Thanks for Listening   Support the How To Cut It podcast by becoming a Patreon HERE   To share your thoughts: Leave a note in the comment section below. EP220: Richard Kavanagh – How To Create the Hair Career of Your Dreams08 Nov 202101:10:41
Today we're to get the inside story from how 5 x Australian Session Stylist of the Year, Richard Kavanagh, has created a hairdressing career full of 'pinch me' moments. What started out for Richard as relatively modest beginnings in hairdressing, quickly became a career full of exciting pathways and life-changing opportunities. Learning how this happened to a school kid who originally wanted to be a biochemist is a fascinating and inspiring listen. It's a story packed full of 'goosebump' happenings that have led him to becoming a highly acclaimed hair stylist and well known face in Australia. I started this podcast to bringing you all more on how hairdressing can be a multi-asset career and this episode with Richard reflects that perfectly. He has a lot to share today from when he decided to have a proper crack at finding success in hair industry competitions and how all this all led him to so much more in his life. Moments like him working on editorial shoots for magazines, how by accident he found himself becoming a prime time tv show host, and again by accident, getting on session legends, Guido's, team. Plus many other incredible standout moments. And we finish the podcast learning how he has now created, Piiq, a tool designed to help hairdressers thrive by giving them a powerful tool to help them generate and keep more revenue in the salon. EP218: GUYS LIKE ME DON’T DO HAIRDRESSING! with Dexter Dapper13 Oct 202100:54:32
Perhaps hairdressing wasn't a natural career choice for you. Well, for a lot of us that can be the case, and I include myself in that list. The same can be the said for todays guest, Dexter Dapper, International Artistic Director for Toni&Guy/Label M. It was after a conversation with group of friends in a local pub that the idea of hairdressing could be a great career match for him. A big lover of music and fashion there was so many reasons why hairdressing could really connect with both him and his fun guy personality. But Dexter still had some self doubts about hairdressing. He really did believe 'guys like him don't do hairdressing'! For some outside of the industry, hairdressing can have a negative image. Sadly, this wrongful negative image can put many people off from entering into what we all know is a wonderful, dynamic and diverse industry. And jeez, once you do go and fully immerse yourself into it, you can find so many different assets and directions that you can take in a hairdressing career. Thankfully, this is very much what Dexter discovered once he made the decision to go into hairdressing after that initial conversation with friends. And it took him no time at all to grasp the opportunity of unlocking a successful pathway in it. He's joining the podcast today to tell us all about how he's made hairdressing work for himself and his life. He's used hairdressing to help him become the 'best version he can be of himself'. Having this approach is at the heart of everything he does, giving him a career he genuinely could have never believed possible when he first started out in hairdressing. So, if you have ever felt hairdressing was an unfulfilling career with limited pathways, then there's a lot of great stuff in this episode for you.   A podcast produced by Hairy Media Productions    Thanks for Listening   To share your thoughts: Leave a note in the comment section below. EP216: “We Don’t Do Saturdays” with David and Nicole Barnett of HPS27 Sep 202100:44:22
Attracting staff is the No.1 problem for our hair industry. So what todays guests, David and Nicole Barnett of the High Performance Stylist, are suggesting that not working Saturdays could really help fix a part of this big problem. This is why they are championing "We Don't Do Saturdays". It's for salon owners that want to shout from the rooftops,"OUR TEAM COMES FIRST!" Now let's be be really clear about something. David and Nicole say closing your salon on Saturdays is MUCH, MUCH, MORE than just a schedule change! "We Don't Do Saturdays" is a CAUSE! And with such a proposed game changing cause for the hair industry, my natural curiosity to this massive statement meant I had to delve deeper with them both on it. Will you agree or disagree with what they are proposing? In this episode we get to hear why David and Nicole believes if your salon business adopts "We Don't Do Saturdays" it says that if people work for you, that your salon business cares about creating a balance between all of your salon life and personal life. That you can all work the perfect schedule and still have an incredible career. It says that you are a forward thinking company that understands and listens to the wants and needs of your team! BUT, there is a strategy that must be followed if your salon business wants this change to be a raving success and attract new team members and new guests due to the CAUSE you may now stand for! Something that they will be sharing in this episode. It's radical and who knows, after listening in you too might just be saying; "We Don't Do Saturdays".   A podcast produced by Hairy Media Productions    Thanks for Listening   To share your thoughts: Leave a note in the comment section below. One of the biggest hair brands in the world, many hairdressers and non-hairdressers have gone on to successfully open up their own franchised TONI&GUY salons. EP210: Helping Hairdressers Avoid Industry Burnout, with Hayley Jepson (aka The Resilient Hairdresser)16 Aug 202100:36:39
I love a niche, because if you try to cater to everyone you can get lost in the noise of many and your message won't speak to anyone. So, it's important you have a targeted niche market and speak to a customer or client in a certain way which they can really relate to. And that's what todays guest, Hayley Jepson, has done. In my conversation with Hayley, we get to hear how she recognised that many hairdressers and salon owners were feeling stressed, burntout, anxious and overwhelmed by the daily pressures of salon life. Something Hayley had experienced as a hairdresser herself. Finding it hard to manage the day to day pressures of busy salon life on top of depression, she went and got some therapy. "This was the best thing for me and I can honestly say it changed my life" says Hayley. Hayley made the huge decision to quit hairdressing and inspired by the therapy began working as a psychotherapist full time. But what Hayley reveals in this episode was how hairdressing pulled her back in, and noticed the things that had previously worn her down about hairdressing no longer bothered her.  It was these skills gained through both having therapy and practising it that were serving her well. Something that inspired her to help other hairdressers and salon owners feeling overwhelmed. Step up, The Resilient Hairdresser! With her down-to-earth ways of teaching that oozes warmth and humour, you'll hear that when it comes to avoiding industry burnout, Hayley really knows her stuff. Because you're not going to hear from a hairdresser or barber, but from a business entrepreneur who has created one of the fastest growing brands in the beauty industry, Danny Gray of War Paint for Men. He's going to take us right back to why being bullied for his appearance as young kid led him to creating and designing War Paint for Men; a make-up brand specifically for the male audience. I get so many of my influences from outside of the hair industry. So by bringing more future guests onto the HTCI podcast that are away from the world of hair, I'm keen for you to learn of their first-hand experiences from within their own industry sector. Thats what we are to get in this conversation with Danny today, as he will be sharing some seriously cool stuff that will translate perfectly to all of you that are looking for an entrepreneurial journey – no matter where or what that is. EP206: James Atkinson (aka The Life Of Hair) – How to Become a Successful Hairdresser on YouTube (Part 2)19 Jul 202100:42:48
Little did James Atkinson know that when he first started out with his 'The Life Of Hair' YouTube channel was how successful it was going to become. Now with 65.3K subscribers and counting, The Life Of Hair is officially Europes No.1 Hairdresser on YouTube. BOOM! So I'm curious to learn how James has gone about about achieving this. It's to make prime cut listening for all of you wanting to break in to or simply struggling to find success on YouTube; the second biggest search engine after Google. This interview you're about to hear with James is Part 2 of 'How To Become a Successful YouTube Hairdresser', originally recorded back in Lockdown July 2020 exclusively for our Patreon premium 'Xtra Show' podcast. As we now come up to celebrating our first birthday of our HTCI Patreon members site, I wanted to unlock today one episode of these Premium podcasts so that you can all get to hear the mega gold nuggets of information that we hold back for our Patreon members only every week. Step up James Atkinson. With it's complex algorithms, tagging, titles and SEO, YouTube is a complicated game that you need to understand on how to play it, if you want to find success on it. For lots of us the many hours  of investment spent creating these videos leaves us feeling both frustrated and disappointed when we see the limited views and engagement our posted videos get. It's little wonder then why so many of us simply give up on creating content for YouTube. But I shoutout this loud, "DON'T GIVE UP JUST YET". As I already said James is Europes No.1 hairdresser on YouTube and he is about to reveal some of his experiences that have helped him to go on and find success on YouTube. I promise what he is about to share will get us all rethinking our YouTube strategy. It's that good! *WARNING* If you're not on YouTube then you might be seriously missing out.
