246. Rebranding your life with Davidji07 Sep 202400:56:37

This episode is without a doubt one of my all-time favorite conversations on the podcast! In this episode, I chat with the renowned meditation teacher, David Ji, who has guided millions of people on their journey to heal their hearts and embrace the power of meditation.

What We Discuss:

  • Shedding What Doesn’t Serve Us: David and I explore the concept of letting go of the things in our lives that no longer serve us, viewing this as a form of rebirth or life rebranding.
  • Who’s in Your Front Row: We dive into the importance of becoming aware of the people in your "front row"—those who directly influence your life—and why it’s crucial to surround yourself with those who truly support your choices and growth.
  • Evaluating Your Circle: Take a moment to reflect on the five people or behaviors in your life and how they impact your feelings and well-being.
  • The Power to Begin Again: David shares insights on giving yourself permission to start fresh, no matter where you are in life.
  • The Power of Meditation: We chat about how meditation can transform your life, leading to more mindful and conscious decisions.
  • 16-Second Meditation Practice: David also takes us through a simple yet powerful 16-second practice that can help you make more conscious choices—this one is a beauty!

146. The colourful life of sobriety with Calamity Tash04 Feb 202301:06:52

In this episode I catch up with the very colourful Calamity Tash from Adelaide. Tash gave away alcohol at the age of 25 years old, after years of habitual serious bingeing (to the point of alcohol poisoning), blackouts, and using alcohol as a coping mechanism. Her drinking spiralled out of control, starting her day with wine, drinking in her lunch breaks and then continuing after work. Luckily, she started dating someone who didn't drink and she realised that life without alcohol is a possibility.

Tash has been sober for over 4 years now, she surrounds herself with people who keep her accountable in sobriety and her work with disengaged, queer and neuro-diverse youths.

145. The undeniable life changing freedom of waking up without shame and regret with Lisa from Sydney28 Jan 202300:47:26

How many times do we have to wake up hating ourselves? Feeling incongruent, out of alignment with our values, ashamed, worried, embarrassed, your body demanding attention "please stop poisoning me"... Yet we ignore it, blame ourselves, tell ourselves we will learn to be better and repeat the exact same cycle a few days or weeks later? I know I did and so did this wonderful guest Lisa. Lisa and I have been working together for 12 months or so and she is the epitome of digging deep and doing the work. A true example of how it's not always easy, that sobriety will challenge you, uncover things about yourself you didn't know where there and make you deal head on with raw emotions but the flip-side is true freedom.

143. Get out of your mind and into your body with Dr Luke Sniewski14 Jan 202301:02:56

In this episode I was honoured to catch up with Dr Luke Sniewski. Luke is a Wellbeing Coach and Somatic Therapist, he was also the facilitator in Dr Gabor Mate's Compassionate Inquiry course which I was a student of in 2022. We caught up to talk about Luke's new book, Somawise which is an incredible resource for healing addiction and becoming more aware of the messages and signals the body is trying to make us aware of day to day. Luke uses his lived experience through an addiction to Porn and was able to heal what was driving that addiction through connecting to the body through awareness and compassion. Luke says authentic change begins with silence, stillness, and the courage to look inward. We may not like what we find there, but getting into our body is where the real work of change is done. Through this awareness we are able to liberate ourselves from our old patterns and core beliefs.

130. When the Sneaky Bitch comes calling with Jacinta from Sydney19 Nov 202201:09:05

In this episode I catch up with Jacinta from Sydney. Growing up with an alcohol Mum, Jacinta knows too well the dangers of alcoholism, it's destruction and how sly and powerful she can be. Like so many of us that grow up with addicted parents, even though we see the fall out we can also find ourselves in similar patterns. While their stories are very different the parallels between Jacinta and her Mum show the power of the Sneaky Bitch. Her Mum after years and years of alcohol abuse which had led to all sorts of destructive behaviours, Jacinta's Mum gave up the booze for 10 years. Jacinta, like her Mum had found herself also under the spell of alcohol and gave it up for some time. After 10 years of abstinence and after the death of her Husband, Jacinta's Mum took up drinking again and spiralled right back to where she started. Jacinta like her Mum, after months without booze found herself having "just one" with her hubby and also ended up right back where she started. In this episode we talk about the Sneaky Bitch and how she still hangs around even after years of no alcohol. It happens to me from time to time, it happens to us all and something we need to be aware of and be prepared for.

We also chat about the difficulties of asking for help if you work in the medical or health sector.

Jacinta is a HIQA grad for the second time, is 10 months sober now and going strong.

Andrew is a truck driver, Dad, Husband and a sober guy on a gentle journey of self discovery.  Growing up and not being sure how to express his emotions and bottling his feelings up led to Andrew to find himself in some pretty dark places which was exacerbated by alcohol.  With the help of his beautiful wife, Andrew started to recognise that alcohol was making him so much worse and eventually decided to give it away.  He has been sober now for over 12 months at the time of recording.  He has gone from a place of very low self worth to loving who he is, he is happy, he is healthy and he has even come off his anti-depressants.
This is a true message of hope.  Andrew is walking and talking testimony that you can pull yourself out of the darkest of places.

Yoga Nidra (yogic sleep) aka NSDR has been used for thousands of years as therapeutic tool to promote profound states of relaxation.   By getting into this state of relaxation, slowing our brain waves and nervous system we can cultivate deep deep healing on a physical, emotional and spiritual level.

123. The power of peri. Hormones, alcohol and you with Lissie Turner18 Oct 202201:29:36
I pull in the big guns for this episode hormones that I know very little about.  I had a request from a listener to chat about alcohol and the effect it has menopause and peri-menopause.  My good friend Lissie has studied the endocrine system extensively and is somewhat of an expert in the field.  Lissie specialises in hormonal and cyclic education, and in clinic on any pathologies, lifestyle choices, dietary details related to restoring or building better menstrual, ovulating, pubescent, perimenopausal or menopausal health.  Don't worry, it's not a snore fest, it's actually something every woman and every man for that matter should listen to.

122. Losing it all and finding recovery with founding member of Maroon 5, Ryan Dusick15 Oct 202200:54:37
In this episode I chat with Ryan Dusick,  Ryan  is an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist, the founding drummer of the  band Maroon 5, a mental health advocate, and an author of the soon to be released book  Harder to Breathe: A Memoir of Making Maroon 5, Losing It All, and Finding Recovery (out November 2022).
After increasing anxiety and severe nerve damage in his shoulder led to a complete physical and mental breakdown,  Ryan's bandmates from Maroon 5 where forced to ask to him leave the band.   Ryan turned to alcohol as a way to alleviate the emotional and physical pain he was going through.
Ryan's alcohol intake soon spiralled out of control and got to the point of some days drinking up to 6 bottles of wine in a day.  Eventually with the help of his girlfriend he admitted himself into rehab and started to the process of recovery and healing.
Ryan is now a passionate about spreading the word that healing is possible and that a sober life has so many gifts to give.

121. Finding freedom through forgiveness after a life of trauma with spirit medium Charmaine Wilson04 Oct 202201:04:52
In this episode I chat with spirit medium, Charmaine Wilson.  Charmaine is a gifted medium who I have had the pleasure of having a very accurate reading with, however Charmaine's story is so much bigger than just being someone who can commune with the spirit world.  Charmaine is a survivor of child sexual abuse, domestic violence, addiction and went through the tragic loss of a child.  Charmaine is very direct and to the point and certainly doesn't mince her words and some people may find the content of this episode triggering.  Charmaine has been to the depths of addiction and experienced immense and overwhelming trauma and suffering and is now totally sober.  She has made it her mission to forgive herself and others to seek freedom.

120. Back in charge and taking the challenge with Mandy Nolan01 Oct 202201:21:31
In this episode I catch up with comedian, author and self professed show off, Mandy Nolan.   Mandy delves into her deeply traumatic and violent childhood, the death of her father at a young age due to alcohol and how all that trauma has shaped her.  Mandy's relationship with alcohol was also an unhealthy one, a fast drinker who would often have long blackouts.  She is now enjoying sober life,  we talk about how to schmooze without the booze, seeing your trauma and how is shows up in your adult life as triggers and most of all how she decided to give it away while she still has the choice.
Mandy is 2.5 months into her sobriety and I am challenging her to take on one year without booze and follow her progress throughout the year.

233. Getting your power back and looking up with Beau Brooks. 01 Jun 202400:40:00

In this episode, I catch up with Beau Brooks, who rose to fame in the 2010s as the frontman of the popular prankster group, The Janoskians. From hanging out with celebrities like the Kardashians and Ariana Grande, Beau shares his journey and opens up about his childhood wound from being abandoned by his father at a young age, which fueled an unquenchable desire for recognition.

After achieving fame, Beau started drinking heavily, which escalated to binge drinking and an inability to socialize without substances. His addiction to alcohol, cocaine, and pharmaceutical drugs spiraled out of control until a near-death experience he pledged to stay sober.

Now living a more humble life, Beau works in a factory and resides with his mom, using public transport to get to and from work. Despite his challenges, he uses his massive platform of over 3 million TikTok followers to advocate for mental health, sobriety, and living a wholesome life. Beau also participates in ultra-marathons and recently launched his own clothing brand, Look Up (I was actually his first customer!).

116. Taking responsibility opens the door to freedom - Soul Talk with Sam Brown13 Sep 202200:58:06
In this Soul Talk with Sam Brown we talk about taking responsibility, for your actions, owning when you have stuffed up, for you you treat yourself and how you want to show up in your life.  We all do it, we blame everyone else or our circumstances as a way of protecting ourselves and not having to be truly honest or vulnerable, let's face, that stuff is scary.  But what if we challenge ourselves to push through that?  I believe that when we are able to admit our wrongs and take responsibility for every aspect of our lives as adults we open the doors to freedom.
