Ep. 88- Wendell & Wild and the Mount Rushmore of Stop Motion Films
03 Nov 2022
01:05:28
If there is one thing Claira and I will always love it's the wonderful medium of animation and stop motion in particular tends to give us some of our favorite movies.
First we discussed the newest Henry Selick film, Wendell & Wild and provide our spoiler free review.
Then we did our best to decide which stop motion films would make it onto the Mount Rushmore of Stop Motion Animation. Which, spoilers, was incredibly difficult.
Ep. 87- Halloween Ends & the Mount Rushmore of Horror Villains
20 Oct 2022
01:05:37
**This Episode Contains Spoilers**
Halloween has officially ended...or has it? The discourse surrounding this movie has been intense, so Sydney and I offer our thoughts on whether it was a satisfactory conclusion to the Laurie Strode Saga.
After our discussion, we also attempted to determine which villains from horror history would make it onto the Mount Rushmore of Horror Villains. While we wont make everyone happy with our choices, I still think we did a good job!
(You can direct any and all grievances to our Instagrams)
Ep. 86- The 5 Best Horror Movies With A "Rotten" Score
13 Oct 2022
01:05:39
We are back! Apologize for the short absence in episodes, I was traveling and then had a computer issues, but all is returning to normal. The world is healing.
To celebrate spooky season, Claira and I wanted to do something a little different. Instead of choosing our 5 favorite horror movies, which maybe we'll do in the future, we wanted to expand our knowledge and talk about 5 horror movies we love that have a negative score on Rotten Tomatoes!
We might be movie snobs sometimes, but we like to have fun as well!
Ep. 85- Rings of Power/Game of Thrones & the 5 Best Fantasy Movies
22 Sep 2022
01:07:38
While Claira and I may watch a lot of movies, believe it or not we also watch some television! (Claira more than me).
Before Awards Season is fully underway, we talked briefly about the two most popular fantasy shows on television right now and what we have loved and expect from them in the future!
We then discussed our 5 favorite fantasy movies but with a catch! We had to choose 1 movie from the following category
90s fantasy 2000s fantasy 2010s fantasy International fantasy Animated fantasy
Thanks for listening and be sure to check out our social media links!!
Ep. 84- August 2022 Movie Recap
08 Sep 2022
01:27:43
When July ended, Sydney and I were mostly optimistic about the August movie releases. But as August came to an end, it turns out the month was mostly a dud. A few good movies that were surrounded by a lot of mediocre ones.
In this episode, we discussed 18 of the new movies released in August and let you know which ones are worth watching.
(sorry in advance for cricket noises towards the end, California is in the middle of a heatwave)
Ep. 83- The State of Streaming & 5 Streaming Exclusives to Watch
01 Sep 2022
01:10:50
With the advent of streaming, our lives were changed forever. For good and maybe for bad as well. With the recent HBOMax news, Claira and I discuss the current state of streaming and what the future might hold.
After, we give our recommendation for 1 movie to stream from 5 different platforms: Netflix, Hulu, Prime, HBOMax, and Shudder!
The 90s. The time of Nirvana, Seinfeld, and the Furby.
But aside from all those fantastic things (yes even the Furby), it is a decade filled with some of cinema's most essential and exciting films.
In this episode, I am joined by the very knowledgeable and first-time guest, Bobbi, host of The Afternoon Special. We discussed shows and music of the 90s, the era of Nickelodeon and Disney, and then attempted the impossible- ranked our 5 favorite movies of 1999. A year that some may assert is the best movie year ever.
It's well known that Claira and I are massive fans of the animation medium. It is also a well-known fact that Claira and I don't have lives.
Between the two of us, we have seen 19 of 2022's animated movie releases. Crazy right?
In this episode we: - discussed each one and let you know if its worth streaming/watching - which ones have the best chance of getting an Oscar nom - our 4 favorite
Ep. 80- Nope (2022) & the 5 Best Alien Invasion movies
11 Aug 2022
01:30:43
Nope has landed! Jordan Peele's third feature film, but does it live up to the hype? Claira and I discussed our initial *spoiler-free* reactions to the movie and where it lands in the Peele filmography.
Then in the second half of the podcast, we discussed our 5 favorite alien invasion movies. The keyword is "invasion" which automatically disqualifies all of the Alien movies (and also we didn't count E.T.)
Thanks to everyone who has been listening and be sure to drop a review and rating!
July was a busy month for movie releases, so I am once again joined by Sydney to recap the 12 new movies that we watched in July and let you know if we think it's worth your time to watch!
In this episode we discussed: The Princess Minions: The Rise of Gru Thor: Love and Thunder The Sea Beast Where the Crawdads Sing Don't Make Me Go Vengeance Nope The Gray Man Not Okay

Ep. 78- Studio Ghibli Hall of Fame Part 2
21 Jul 2022
01:30:19
The second part of the epic journey! Claira and I finish up our discussion on the entire Studio Ghibli filmography and our quest to determine the 10 best Studio Ghibli films will come to a conclusion.
In this episode we discussed:
Howl's Moving Castle Tales From Earthsea Ponyo Arrietty From Up on Poppy Hill The Wind Rises The Tale of the Princess Kaguya When Marnie Was There Earwig and the Witch
Let us know what you thought of our official top 10 Studio Ghibli movies!
It is finally here! After weeks of discussing it, Claira and I have finally embarked on what feels like an impossible quest.
Instead of doing our usual top 5, Claira and I will be going through each Studio Ghibli film by release date and asking one simple question:
Does this movie make the top 10 Studio Ghibli Hall of Fame?
In this episode we discussed:
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Castle in the Sky Grave of the Fireflies My Neighbor Totoro Kiki's Delivery Service Only Yester Porco Rosso Ocean Waves Pom Poko Whisper of the Heart Princess Mononoke My Neighbors the Yamadas Spirited Away The Cat Returns
We are officially halfway through 2022, which has been a roller coaster of a year in the world of film. While we have received some genre-defining movies, we also have had our fair share of not-so-great movies.
In this episode, I am joined by fellow film connoisseur Sydney to discuss our top movies in 2022 thus far. While I am sure you expect an extensive conversation about The Bubble and Morbius, sadly, they were too good even for our lists.
Ep. 75- Everything Everywhere All At Once & Top 5 A24 Movies
23 Jun 2022
01:24:51
After many months of teasing a discussion about arguably the best movie of the year, Claira and I are finally getting a chance to discuss the greatness that is Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Why does it work? Where it will land in movie history? Oscar Odds?
And then we attempt the impossible, listing out the Top 5 A24 movies. Some choices are obvious, others may surprise you!
Ep. 74- Top Gun: Maverick and the Top 5 Tom Cruise movies
09 Jun 2022
01:11:49
Top Gun: Maverick is here and let's just say, we are very excited to talk about it. I am joined by long-time friend and guest of the podcast, Nate Spencer, to discuss if Top Gun: Maverick lives up to expectations and what it means for future blockbusters.
In the second half of the episode, we discussed the 5 best Tom Cruise performances. Obviously, number 1 and 2 will go to Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder and Cruise's performance in Austin Powers.
May is unofficially Star Wars month and with the upcoming release of Kenobi, what better time than to rank the Top 5 Star Wars projects?
It just so happens that among Claira's vast knowledge of all things film, they are also a Star Wars enthusiast, putting my knowledge to shame. Nonetheless, we both ranked our 5 favorite Star Wars projects- movies or shows were up for grabs, but not books since there are over 300 of them.
Be sure to drop a rating and review on Apple and Spotify!
Ep. 72- 10 Movies If You Need a Good Cry
12 May 2022
01:39:43
If there is one thing Claira and I are good at, it's crying during a movie. So we each picked our 5 favorite movies that make us cry the hardest and discussed what aspects of the movie cause us to sob uncontrollably.
Some picks are a little more obvious, and some you might be surprised by. But if there's one thing I can safely guarantee, if you've been searching for movies to give you a guaranteed good cry, look no further!
Ep. 71- Ambulance (2022) and the Top 3 Action Movies of the 21st Century
28 Apr 2022
01:06:38
I am joined by long-time friend of the podcast, Nate Spencer, to discuss the most recent Michael Bay action extravaganza, Ambulance.
Is Ambulance Michael Bay's best movie in years? The short answer- yes. But have we been too harsh on Bay's past filmography? Nate and I dive into what makes Ambulance great and discuss some other Bay's blockbuster films.
In the second half of the podcast, we attempt the impossible, ranking the top 3 action movies of the 21st century. With hundreds of movies to choose from, some of our choices will surprise you (but other choices will definitely not surprise you)
With the release of Turning Red, we have Pixar movies on the brain. and as promised, Claira returns to the podcast to discuss the 7 best Pixar movies.
Ranking Pixar is simultaneously easy and very difficult. Do you let your nostalgia make the decisions? Do you try to be as objective as possible? Do you pick the ones that make you cry the most? Turns out, it's a combination of all of those things!
If there's one thing we can guarantee, Cars 2 will not be on either of our Top 7s, so we are sorry in advance to any of the Cars 2 fans out there!
Ep. 69- Turning Red & 5 Favorite Coming of Age Films
06 Apr 2022
01:17:40
I am joined once again by the always brilliant Claira Curtis to discuss Pixar's latest film, Turning Red, a film that's had quite the interesting response from parents and critics alike.
Full disclosure, we love Turning Red and discuss why it works as one of Pixar's better coming of age films. Don't worry, we also attempt attempt to explore the insanity behind some of the ridiculous outrage.
And since Turning Red is a coming of age story, Claira and I also discuss our 5 favorite coming of age films. An absolutely stacked subgenre which made it even more difficult to choose just 5 movies.

Ep. 68- The Batman (2022) & Ranking the Top 5 Batman Movies
24 Mar 2022
01:12:36
We are back!
After a brief break, we are back in full swing discussing the latest indie flick, The Batman. A smaller movie that maybe some of you didn't get to catch. Well, not to worry, we discussed our non spoiler and spoiler thoughts.
Joined once again by Nate Spencer, we also spent the second half of the podcast ranking the top 5 Batman movies. Is it possible that Batman and Robin made the cut? Probably not. But I guess you'll have to listen to find out!
2021 was a great movie year but it was an especially great movie year for animated films! From Disney to Pixar to Sony to another Boss Baby film, there were just so much great animated movies to consume.
In this episode we focused on 3 animated films:
The Mitchells vs the Machines Encanto Luca
Also in this episode- our most anticipated 2022 animated films!
Ep. 66- Scream (1996)
20 Jan 2022
01:05:08
Horror in January?!? To celebrate the release of Scream (2022) or 5cream as it has been hilariously been called on the internet, we are going back to where it all started.
We discussed...
Matthew Lillard- better in Scream or Scooby-Doo? Who would die first when being chased by Ghostface? Ghostface or Freddy- the more iconic Wes Craven? Nightmare On Elm Street....also a great rap song?
Ep. 65- Disappointing and Surprising Movies of 2021
13 Jan 2022
01:21:02
Continuing the retrospective on 2021, I am joined with long time friend and veteran guest of the podcast, Nate Spencer, to discuss some of the movies that disappointed us in 2021 but also some of the movies that surprised in 2021!
The Matrix, No Way Home, Halloween Kills, Last Night in Soho....were these movies surprises or disappointments?
Check out the episode and let us know what you think!
2021 was a wild year and strangely, a fantastic year for movies and a great bounce back from a quiet 2020. So I enlisted my good friend Claira to break down and complete the impossible task of listing the 5 movies that we loved the most.
Is A Christmas Story slight overrated? Possibly. But we here at the HoC podcast still absolutely adore it.
We discussed: - the best quotes from the movie - swear words- Oh FUUUDGE - Team Real Christmas Tree or Team Fake Christmas Tree - Christmas Bullies - ranking child actor performances in Christmas movies
and so much more!!
Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!
Ep. 62- The Santa Clause (1994)
16 Dec 2021
01:01:13
After two episodes were lost due to technical difficulties, we here at the House of Cinema podcast were beginning to lose our Holiday spirit.
But we are back and with our spirits rekindled mainly because we all forgot how much we love The Santa Clause. Maybe a tad underrated now and over shadowed by movies like The Grinch and Elf, we took the time to discuss what separates The Santa Clause from the rest of the pack.
We discussed: - Where does The Santa Clause rank amongst other 90s Christmas movies? - Denny's- a good or bad restaurant? - How annoying is the E.L.F.S? - How annoying is Charlie? - Ranking Christmas elves
Prisoner of Azkaban is largely considered one of the best, if not the best Harry Potter movie and we here at the HoC podcast definitely agree.
We discussed: - our individual patronum - ranking movies with time travel elements in it - discussion of fictional movie jails - best scenes from HP: PoA
To celebrate, we took a slight break from discussing individual movies but to continue the month of celebrating everything Harry Potter, I am joined by film critic, good friend and Harry Potter mega-fan, Claira Curtis, to rank and discuss the top 5 Harry Potter movies!
Some things that we discussed: - Does Chamber of Secrets really deserve the hate? - Deathly Hallows P1 vs Deathly Hallows P2 - also Claira gives their top 4(ish) best movies of 2021 so far!
Follow us on social media and check out Claira's Letterboxd!
Ep. 59- Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001)
04 Nov 2021
01:07:43
Happy November! Horror month has sadly come to an end, so to help cure our blues we are dedicating all of November to everything and anything Harry Potter (except the Fantastic Beast franchise).
And what better way to kick off the month and discuss the movie that started it all! We discussed:
- what position would you play in quidditch? - establishing our houses - is Harry/Gryffindor insufferable? - the best fantasy movies of 2001

Ep. 58- 28 Days Later (2002)
21 Oct 2021
01:20:26
Week 3 of spooky season continues!
This week, co-host Dillon wanted to revisit 28 Days Later, ANOTHER movie from 2002 (this was not planned). 28 Days Later helped breathe fresh air into a fatigued zombie genre and is beloved by all in the House of Cinema crew.
Some things we discussed...
- fast zombies vs slow zombies, which are scarier? - what do you grab first in an abandoned supermarket? - does the movie age well? - ranking classic horror movie creatures
I was joined by long time friend and past guest, Nate from @allthingsreviewed_, and we discussed our 5 favorite horror movies...but with a slight twist. We were only allowed to select one movie per decade- 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s.
From giallo to found footage, indie to horror blockbusters- we did our best to narrow down what we thought were some of the best and scariest horror films of each decade.
For this week's pick, we are sticking in 2002 but going a little bit scarier than Scooby-Doo. Signs is one of those movies that we deeply feel has aged incredibly well. Can we also get more horror movies about alien invasions?
We discussed:
- what makes the Brazilian birthday party video so scary? - what is your final meal before an alien home invasion? - ranking animated alien invasion movies
We are back! We took a short break but are back just in time for spooky season.
2/3 of the House of Cinema crew love Halloween and horror movies...the other (cough Olivia cough) is not the biggest fan of Halloween and horror movies. So to ease ourselves into the Halloween season, we kicking it off with a fan favorite film, the 2002 live action Scooby-Doo.
It feels like this movie has had a recent resurgence in popularity. Whether its the nostalgia of the early 2000s or James Gunn mentioning an R-Rated cut of this movie exists. Whether the case, we discussed:
- Does this movie hold up still? - Scooby-Doo- the best TV theme song of all time? - could anyone else have play Shaggy?
and so much more!!
Check out the podcast socials! IG: @house.of.cinema_ TikTok: @cinemanation
We took a week break but are back to celebrate September, a month that symbolizes the end of summer and the start of school. So we decided to some our very favorite movies that revolved around schools and to kick things off, we are jumping straight into Easy-A (2010).
We discussed: - best Natasha Beddingfield songs? - Easy-A or Crazy Stupid Love, which Emma Stone rom com do you prefer? - best movies based off classic literature?
and so much more!

Ep. 53- Megamind (2010)
01 Sep 2021
01:05:15
We have reached the end of Animated August and for the final episode, our very one Dillon has chosen a movie that he feels is an underrated Dreamworks gem.
Lets just say- not everyone agrees but Megamind still boasts an excellent voice ensemble, an original story and some great animated visuals.
We discussed:
- what would a Live Action Megamind really look like? - could anyone else have voiced Megamind? - favorite movies where the villain is the hero?
Continuing Animated August with what we think is an underrated classic, A Goofy Movie!
A movie that deserves so much more love and respect. Sure, it wasn't as commercially successful as the movies that came before and after it, but it still has a lot of heart and a killer soundtrack!
We discussed:
- should Donald Duck been in the movie? - ranking other underrated Disney classics - animated movie crushes (yes, we all had them) - what band would you perform live with?
If you've listened to the podcast in the past, you know today's episode is incredibly special because it is one of Olivia's favorite movies ever. Not jokingly, quite literally in her top 5 of all time.
So it was only natural to discuss Shrek 2 for Animated August!
We discussed:
- what could Shrek 5 be about? - Shrek 1 vs Shrek 2 - Animated Movie Sequels - Disney vs Dreamworks
and so much more!

Finishing off the month of July with one of the most popular cult classic movies, The Princess Bride!
Do you think anyone actually dislikes this movies? It seems....inconceivable!
But in all seriousness, despite being over 30 years old, The Princess Bride is still an incredibly wholesome, charming and hilarious movie that can clearly stand the test of time.

13 Jul 2021
01:10:09
In the month of July, we here at the House of Cinema are discussing everything underrated and we thought Tron: Legacy fit the bill perfectly.
A certified cult classic movie that was a sequel to another cult classic movie? You don't see that very often but we here at House of Cinema (well 2/3rds of us) believe that Tron: Legacy has something very special to offer.
Drinking Game: Take a shot every time someone mentions how great the Daft Punk score is.
We discussed: - fictional movie vehicles - the best arcade games - Tron 3: do we really need it? - Is Tron a bad movie with great visuals and a great score? - Pinball machines: overrated?
