1: How Anxiety, Histamines & Progesterone Are All Connected - Michelle Shapiro, RD15 Sep 202501:10:18

Join us for our Histamine and Hormones Training on September 28th!

Why do some women feel amazing during certain phases of their cycle while others feel absolutely wrecked?

In this episode, I’m joined by Michelle Shapiro, RD, a functional dietitian who works with clients navigating Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) and histamine issues. She also lives with MCAS herself, bringing both professional insight and personal experience to the table.

Why do histamine flares hit hardest right when hormones shift? Tune in as we break down the menstrual cycle, step by step, and look at how mast cells and histamines interact with rising and falling hormones. The patterns aren’t always what you’d expect, and tracking them can change everything about how you handle symptoms.

You’ll Learn:

  • The role of mast cells in the immune system and why histamine release can trigger so many symptoms
  • The link between rising estrogen and increased histamine release
  • Why people with histamine issues can have paradoxical hormone symptoms
  • How long histamines actually stay in your system, and ways to avoid long-term suffering
  • What happens when conditions like POTS and hypermobility overlap with histamine issues during the cycle
  • Practical strategies for tracking cycle patterns to spot histamine-driven flares
  • The debate around antihistamines, pregnancy, and de-stigmatizing medication for symptom relief
  • Why lowering histamines must come before deeper root-cause work like gut or mineral protocols
  • The connection between histamines, mast cells, and endometriosis

Timestamps:

Dynamic Infant Movement For Baby Reflux with Emily Swann02 Dec 202401:24:18

In this episode, we dive into part two of the baby reflux series with Emily Swann, a nurse and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Emily shares her personal journey as a mom navigating silent reflux with her daughter and how it inspired her to integrate holistic practices like bodywork and nutrition into her approach to infant health. We discuss practical tips for addressing posture, movement, and environment to support babies with reflux and empower parents to take a proactive role in their baby’s healing. This episode is a great listen whether you’re dealing with reflux, colic, or just want to learn how to support your baby’s well-being naturally!

Emily Swann is a wife, mother, nurse and Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant. What started out as a career as a NICU nurse quickly turned into a love for holistic wellness outside the hospital system and her passion is helping women and babies breastfeed through holistic lactation work. Emily incorporates bodywork and nutrition as key pillars for infant health and looks at the dyad of mother and baby as one rather than two separate parts.

We talk about:

  • Emily's personal experience with reflux with her daughter, and what she believes to have been the root of the reflux
  • Explanation of dynamic infant movement
  • How oral restrictions can impact reflux
  • Emily's tips for moms to do bodywork on their own babies/children
  • Outsourcing motherhood with informed decision making

Understanding Metabolic Type on an HTMA05 Jul 202100:37:49

Are You Menstrual?
We are continuing our minerals series and expanding on one particular part of the Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA)--metabolic type. Our metabolic type gives us insight into nervous system balance and the stage of stress our bodies are in. This is helpful information to know on a healing journey to better understand what nutrients you need more of and what stress management activities may be best for you.
In this episode, we discuss where metabolic typing came from, the difference between a fast and slow metabolic type, and what the different subtypes are.

Are You Menstrual?
When it comes to nutrition for hormone health we absolutely need to focus on eating enough and balancing our meals, but one often overlooked area of nutrition is mineral content. In this episode, we are going to give you a crash course in minerals and explain the benefits of hair testing and how it differs from blood work and hormone testing.

Our minerals are like spark plugs--they kick off essential reactions in the body and get things moving. One example of this is an essential mineral that we will talk more about--copper. The body uses copper and oxygen to make ATP, which is our main energy source. The cells in our body require minerals to make energy and hormones, which is why we focus so much on them in our practice. We hope you enjoy nerding out with us!

Top 5 Nutrition Myths21 Jun 202100:44:30

Are You Menstrual?
In this episode, we dive a little deeper into the nuances of good nutrition—and more specifically, the most common nutrition myths being perpetuated by the wellness industry. It seems as though there is an increasing number of foods being demonized by health coaches and doctors alike as of late, which makes us wonder what the heck we are supposed to be eating. Well, what we have to say about a few of those “problematic” foods might just surprise and excite you.

Five Foods Covered:

  • Red Meat
  • Dairy
  • Coffee
  • Sugar
  • Gluten

Are You Menstrual?
In this episode, we expand on metabolism and dive into the specifics of what your metabolism needs to properly function and support every other system in the body. But before we dive in, we have a challenge for you. We’re going to ask you to let go of everything you’ve learned in the past about how to eat—including how much you should eat, what foods you should (or should not) eat, and when you should eat. Throw out all of your rules on nutrition and listen to this episode (and remaining episodes) with a fresh perspective on nutrition and lifestyle.
It’s time to rewire your brain and rethink what it looks like to nourish your body.  Because, chances are, it’s not what you think.

Metabolism 101 & Unlearning Dieting Dogma07 Jun 202100:31:06

Are You Menstrual?
The first step we take with the women we work with to improve their hormones and overall health is unlearning. So many of us have been dieting from a young age and constantly hopping from one restrictive diet to the next. Leaving our bodies in a constant state of stress and depleting essential minerals that allow us to thrive. This leads to a slowing down of our metabolism. Most people hear the word metabolism and think of weight loss, but it’s actually so much more than that.

Our metabolism is the basic process our body goes through to convert food to energy. If this process slows down that means we have less energy, which means more hormone problems. In this episode, we walk you through the basics of our metabolism, how stress and dieting impact it, and signs that your metabolism needs support.

Amaia's Birth Story17 Jun 202400:51:39

In this episode, I am sharing my second daughter, Amaia’s birth story. I will also be answering questions this community submitted on IG! This is my birth experience and I will say, I had a beautiful birth at home, it could not have gone better. My first birth was very painful, I thought about giving up multiple times, and had a lot of fear in the beginning. I held a lot of resentment for a while about the pain I went through but I’ve come to change my tune and be grateful for that birth. Katelyn from Happy Homebirth Podcast once told me you have the birth you need. Making the transition from maiden to mother the first time is a lot, at least it was for me. The painful birth prepared me and gave me a little taste for what was ahead. I love being a mom and my entire life revolves around my girls, but it doesn’t mean it’s not hard. It has changed me in ways I couldn’t imagine. If your birth was challenging, I hope it changed you for the better too.

I share:

  • How and when my contractions started
  • Tools I used for pain management during labor
  • Not tensing my uterus or pelvic floor during contractions to make progress
  • How my husband supported me the most
  • Comparing the births of both daughters
  • What I did and used after birth for recovery and healing

Light, Your Circadian Rhythm, & Your Hormones with Carrie Bennett11 Dec 202300:49:14

In this episode, I am joined by Carrie Bennett, to teach you about light, circadian rhythm, and how these impact your hormones. As a college athlete, supposedly at the pinnacle of health, Carrie began suffering chronic joint issues and insomnia. After her first child was born, she developed debilitating stomach pain, adrenal fatigue, and brain fog. Armed with a BS in Biology, an MS in Nutrition, and certifications as a personal trainer, massage therapist, and breathing coach, she still couldn't find the root of her issues. That's when she found quantum biology. Now, as an online educator, clinician, and faculty member of the Quantum Biology Collective, Carrie's mission is to teach her clients how to create a healing environment by applying quantum health strategies around light, water, electrons, and mitochondrial support. Given these tools, clients who have spent years trying to improve their health—just as Carrie did—finally experience powerful healing and lasting benefits.

As always, everything shared in this episode is for informational purposes only. We encourage you to do your own research and talk with your healthcare provider to figure out what’s best for you.

What we cover:

  • Why circadian rhythm is important for our health, especially hormones
  • How our light exposure impacts circadian rhythm
  • How to optimize our CR in the modern world

Getting To The Root Of Baby Reflux with Therese Dansby18 Nov 202401:09:53

In today's episode, I have the pleasure of chatting with Therese Dansby, a registered nurse and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). We dive deep into the world of infant reflux, discussing everything from symptoms and challenges to alternative therapies and personal experiences. Therese shared her wealth of knowledge on topics like oral restrictions, bodywork, and the importance of a holistic approach when it comes to helping babies with reflux. This is a great episode if you're a mom struggling with infant reflux or just want to learn more about this common issue.

Therese started her career as a NICU nurse in 2007, pivoted to birth center postpartum care in 2013, and became an IBCLC in 2015. Helping moms build confidence in their breastfeeding choices and work through breastfeeding struggles is her dream job alongside homeschooling her own three children, ages 10, 7, and 2.

We talk about:

  • Various root causes of infant reflux, including physical factors and chemical factors
  • The range of symptoms from reflux, such as mild "happy spitting" to severe cases requiring medical intervention, such as GERD in NICU settings
  • The value of a holistic approach for addressing feeding techniques, bodywork, dietary changes, and alternative therapies like homeopathy
  • The importance of identifying the underlying issues contributing to your baby's reflux, rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach
  • Following your maternal intuition and working with healthcare providers who will listen to your concerns

How To Assess Stress On An HTMA13 Nov 202300:28:06

In this episode, I am covering how to use hair tissue mineral analysis or HTMA to assess your stress. This is one of the most valuable parts of the test, in my opinion. You get to understand what stage of stress you are in and why you may or may not be handling stress well. For most people, it is a big eye opener and something that can finally lead to confronting your stress and making lifestyle changes. If you are interested in how you can learn more about your thyroid from an HTMA, please listen to the previous episode where I covered this in detail.

As always, this episode is for informational purposes only. Please talk with your healthcare provider before making any changes.

This episode covers:

  • The difference between high and low mineral levels
  • Three stages of stress and how to identify them on an HTMA
  • How sodium and magnesium levels are helpful for understanding your stress
  • Two key ratios, and what a high or low ratio means on an HTMA

The HTMA is my favorite test to assess how well our bodies are able to use thyroid hormone and is a great way to get the full picture of thyroid health beyond blood labs. The bonus episode this week goes through all of my favorite assessment tools for thyroid health including HTMA, optimal thyroid blood ranges, basal body temperature, and using your symptoms to measure progress. You can access this bonus on patreon.com/hormonehealingrd

As always, this episode is for informational purposes only. Please talk with your healthcare provider before making any changes.

This episode covers:

  • The difference between HTMAs versus thyroid blood labs
  • How to assess thyroid function and hormone use using an HTMA
  • How minerals can affect your thyroid function

Fatigue Case Study23 Oct 202300:39:22

In this episode, we are wrapping up our case study series with a case study focusing on fatigue. Our third case is of a previous course student and 1:1 client, Taylor. This case study is shared with permission. We did change her name and a few details to protect her privacy.

As always, this episode is for informational purposes only. Please talk with your healthcare provider before making any nutrition or lifestyle changes.

Taylor came to us with extreme fatigue (and I mean extreme) and a slew of other symptoms that were very concerning to her. She started out in the Master Your Minerals course and then did a results review with me. She discovered she had very low mineral levels and was as depleted as she felt. After making some hard life decisions and prioritizing her health, she regained the energy she lost and started to feel like herself again.

This episode covers:

  • Her main concerns and symptoms, including what she had previously tried
  • Taylor's stress timeline, what she was doing well, and where we decided to focus
  • Her HTMA results and the very few additional interventions we added as a result
  • Taylor's healing ups and downs over the next seven months

Gut Health Case Study16 Oct 202300:50:29

We have our second case study this week focusing on a gut health case. Erin is joining me again to help break it all down for you. We went through a thyroid case last week, so if that’s of interest to you, make sure you listen to the previous episode as well.

We will wrap up the case study series with a final review of a client that struggled with fatigue and energy issues next week.

Our second case is of a previous course student and 1:1 client, Jenna. I reached out to her to ask if we could share her story since I think many people will relate. We did change her name, but all other details are accurate.

Jenna’s main concerns were not necessarily digestive symptoms, but many things came back to the poor health of her gut, which is why we chose her for this case. Her main concerns were headaches/migraines around her cycle, acne, hair loss, and recurrent UTI’s and yeast infections. She did an HTMA through the Master Your Minerals course and had very high copper and calcium. It freaked her out and she wanted additional guidance so she got 1:1 support through a results review and then became a 1:1 client to work deeper on healing her gut after rebalancing her copper levels. This allowed her to reduce her acne, headaches/migraines, and get rid of the recurrent infections she was dealing with. And most importantly to her, finally put a stop to her hair loss.

This episode covers:

  • Jenna's main concerns and symptoms, including what she had previously tried
  • Create her stress timeline, determine what she was doing well, and where to focus
  • Three phases of interventions based on her HTMA results
  • Jenna's healing results in the months following

Thyroid Case Study09 Oct 202300:54:43

We have our first case study this week and joining me to break it all down for you is one of my clinical nutritionists, Erin. We will be covering a thyroid case this week since that’s what my patrons wanted the most and then next week we will dig into a digestive/gut health case. We will wrap up the case study series with a final review of a client that struggled with fatigue and energy issues.

Our first case is of a previous course student and 1:1 client, Tina. I reached out to her to ask if we could share her story since I think many people will relate. We did change her name, but all other details are accurate.

Tina’s main concern was thyroid health and specifically, Hashimoto’s. She did an HTMA through the course and noticed her calcium was really high. When she got 1:1 support we worked on rebalancing calcium through her nutrition and lifestyle primarily, as stress was a big part of her high calcium. This gave her the energy she was looking for and greatly reduced her thyroid antibodies since high calcium can slow down our metabolism and impact all systems in the body.

This episode covers:

  • Tina's main concerns and symptoms, including what she had previously tried
  • Create her stress timeline and determine foundational interventions
  • Her HTMA lab testing results
  • Additional interventions based on her HTMA results
  • Tina's healing ups and downs

How To Thrive During Menopause25 Sep 202300:52:15

In this episode, I am focusing on an important topic that has been heavily requested, menopause! When I think about how to thrive during menopause and set yourself up for success, I think of four main areas: thyroid, stress, nutrition, and our daily habits. If you’ve already gone through menopause, I just want to say it’s never too late to work on the things I cover today. Also, if you did a lot of work and feel like you’ve tried all the things but are still really struggling through menopause, I know that can be really hard, but making nutrition and lifestyle changes is still supporting your long term health. It’s easy to forget that everything we’ve done our entire lives is going to impact our menopausal experience. When we’ve lived a certain way for a long time it can take time to undo a lot of that dysfunction. Be patient and know you are still doing really good things for your body and future health.

As always, this episode is for informational purposes only. Please talk with your healthcare provider before making nutrition, lifestyle, or supplement changes.

This episode covers:

  • How suboptimal thyroid function leads to symptoms experienced during menopause
  • Recommendations to reduce stressors
  • Tips for supporting a healthy stress response
  • Three nutrition tips for menopausal women
  • Daily habits to support your body through menopause

How To Naturally Detox14 Aug 202300:45:53

While the internet would have you believe that you need a supplement or cleanse to support your body’s detox pathways, our bodies detoxify daily on their own. We can absolutely have difficulty with certain organs that can negatively impact our ability to detox, but you might be surprised at what will actually help you detox better. No, it’s not milk thistle. While I do love this herb, there’s a lot more to supporting liver detoxification and detoxification in general than just taking a supplement. If you want to learn more about specific foods and supplements that can support detoxification once you have the foundations in place, join patreon.com/hormonehealingrd to get access to this week’s bonus episode where I dive different options for detox support depending on what you have going on.

How To Have Healthy Digestion07 Aug 202300:37:52

As we continue to work through the foundations for season 5, we have an important topic this week: digestion! Many women struggle with their digestion whether that be bloating, constipation, loose stools, reflux, etc. A lot of our digestive struggles come back to our body’s inability to produce optimal digestive juices and enzymes because a lot of us are living in a constantly stressed state or have lived in one in the past.

In this episode, I am going to break down exactly how our bodies digest our food and how you can support your own digestion right now at home. If you want to learn more about how to specifically support constipation and loose stools, make sure you join my Patreon at patreon.com/hormonehealingrd. I go into specific things you can do for those two digestive issues in the bonus episode.

Can Supplements Harm Your Health?31 Jul 202300:48:08

Supplements are so common these days that it’s easy to forget just how powerful they are. You can go to the grocery store, pharmacy, and most prominently, online to find just about anything you need. I think it’s great that access to supplements is so widely available, but the downside to supplements being so readily available is that they are often taken without as much consideration. Because we can add them to our cart so easily, we may not realize that they could cause more harm than good depending on the supplement and the person.

Again, supplements are powerful, they are an amazing resource to have, but my goal with this episode is to teach you how to analyze supplements that you’re interested in or that are being marketed to you and know go through a series of questions to have an idea of whether or not they are a good fit for you.

I have a bonus episode this week inside Patreon that takes this a step further and highlights certain conditions and supplements that CAN be helpful. You can join my patreon community at patreon.com/hormonehealingrd

As always this is not medical advice. I’m a dietitian but I’m not your dietitian so please talk with your medical provider before making any changes.

This episode covers:

  • Supplements & the influencer era
  • Questions to ask yourself when considering a supplement
  • Commonly recommended supplements that could cause more harm than good

Iron Deep Dive Part 224 Apr 202300:47:46
Strap in, we have a controversial one. It’s time for our mineral deep dive on iron! The mineral that gets many people up in arms, probably even more so than copper. Like most minerals, I think once you understand how our bodies regulate iron, you can see past the confusing information that tends to go to extremes. Most often, things fall somewhere in between. In this episode, I will go through the iron recycling system, what we use iron for in the body, and different iron imbalances.

The bonus episode will breakdown iron case studies where I show an iron deficiency case and an iron overload case that go through labs. I also have an iron rich foods list with the amount of iron per serving and a sample day showing how you can get 20-25mg of heme iron and 34-38mg of total iron. I also cover how iron impacts estrogen. You can get access to the bonus episode by joining patreon.com/hormonehealingrd

Quick reminder, this podcast is for informational purposes only. Please talk with your healthcare provider before making any nutrition or lifestyle changes.

This episode covers:

  • What is macrocytic anemia? {1:21}
  • Three examples of microcytic anemia {4:20}
  • Highlights of anemia of chronic disease {15:09}

Mineral Testing06 Mar 202301:03:51

Welcome to season 4 of the podcast! This season we are focusing on minerals. How to test them, what the different minerals do in our bodies, how they impact our hormones and overall health as well as other systems of the body.

We also have some exciting podcast updates. You heard me mention a podcast Patreon in the introduction. You may be thinking, what patreon? The AYM podcast patreon is new! I started it in February as a way to bring the podcast community together and provide more resources to support listeners on their healing journeys. You will still get your weekly episode of the podcast, but it will be a bit shorter (hopefully) and easier to digest.

Each week, patrons get a bonus episode of the podcast along with downloadable resources. For example, in this episode I’m focusing on how to test minerals and what different types of tests tell you.  The bonus episode is a results review of a hair test and blood work to help bring all the principles of the episode together. The downloadable resource is a PDF of the main principles of mineral testing and lab testing resources.

When the podcast isn’t in season, I am creating content based off monthly surveys to ensure I’m giving members the resources they need. This tier is $10. I also have an exclusive tier that is $20 a month and allows you to submit a voicemail question that I answer during a pre-recorded Q&A. Visit patreon.com/hormonehealingrd to learn more and become a patron!
