120. Why I'm Pausing My Homestead Podcast & YouTube Channel (for now…)10 Oct 202500:11:39

This was one of the hardest videos I've ever had to make. After three years, over 220,000 podcast downloads, and countless amazing connections with listeners and viewers, I've made the difficult decision to pause the YouTube channel and podcast—indefinitely.

Watch on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMz8Wn41XFw

In this episode, I open up about:

👉 Why I decided to step away for now

👉 What's been happening behind the scenes

👉 How recent life changes (including my husband's layoff) have shifted our priorities

👉 What's next for me, my family, and our homestead

👉 The exciting new direction both my husband and I are taking with our businesses I'm still homesteading, still growing food, still raising animals—but my focus is evolving.

I've rebranded my other YouTube channel, now called Mona Weathers, where I help creators and entrepreneurs leverage YouTube to grow community and income.

I also host a growing community of creators inside Skool, where over 80+ members are learning to build sustainable businesses through content and connection. If you've ever listened to my podcast, watched a video, or shared my content—thank you.

Your support has meant the world to me. While this isn't goodbye forever, it is a pause so I can put my full energy into what's next.

020. Homesteading Couples: How To Get Your Spouse On Board16 Dec 202200:13:02

What do you do when your spouse or partner is not on board with your homesteading dreams? This is something I hear people struggling with all the time. One spouse is all into the idea of homesteading and the other has big reservations or is very against the idea.

Recently, I coach a member of the Homesteading for Beginners community through this very topic. I decided a podcast episode on this topic would be good for those dealing with the same thing.

I didn't poll any of my audience but I imagine some of the objections from the spouse that is not into the idea of homesteading might be concerned with:

  • the cost of starting a homestead
  • giving up modern convenience
  • fitting in as a homesteader.
  • their kids will be deprived and sheltered
  • Family and friends will judge their lifestyle.
  • Added work to their already busy life.

If any of these objections resonate with you, I'd love to hear your thoughts. You can send me a direct message on Instagram. If I didn't list an objection send me that as well.

This is a 2 part series. I'll go through these 3 objections this episode and the other 3 next. And hopefully, help both spouses or partners see both sides of the coin and some ideas on how to move forward.

019. 7 Homesteading Pitfalls to Avoid in 202309 Dec 202200:15:51

Setting yourself up for a successful homesteading journey requires some thoughtful planning. You don't have to have it all figured out but it's essential to have some guidelines to follow.

In this episode, I'll highlight some of the pitfalls to avoid when starting out your journey. Some of these pitfalls are a repeat of topics we have covered in previous episodes. Still, it's very important to have a plan of action for preventing future mistakes and to know what to do when faced with problems.

The end of the year is when many of us start to think about what we want out of the new year. We start setting goals and making resolutions. For some, it's an exciting time of year and for others, it's a stressful time of year. Whatever camp you are in, coming from a position of planning and preparing is never a bad idea.

If you're a homesteading dreamer, this is the perfect time to plan how you want to set up your homestead. All of your planning can include ways to avoid these pitfalls.

If you are a beginner homesteader you can use this list to see where your weak spots are. Are there things you can change that will improve next year?

This is a section in Homesteading for Beginners workbook by the way.

7 Homesteading Pitfalls to Avoid

  • lack of planning
  • taking on too much too quickly
  • not having a supportive community, mentor or coach
  • Not believing you are capable
  • giving up instead of pressing on or pivoting
  • lack of savings
  • lack of income

018. How to Start Growing Your Own Food02 Dec 202200:16:53

Growing food doesn't have to be complicated. If you're new to gardening it may seem that way. You hear people throwing around words like cross-pollination, root bound, indeterminate, and hardening off and you feel they are speaking a different language.

In episode 11 I talked about my thoughts on jumping in blindly to the homesteading life. I cautioned you not to start without some planning in two areas- when it involves animals and when it involves wasting money. Today I'm going to say the opposite and tell you to just do it! Just start that garden.

Here are 3 reasons why you should start now and not wait:

  1. Seeds want to grow. We just have to create a nice little bed for them to grow but their will to grow is strong.
  2. Growing food can be inexpensive. Learning to grow food has a low barrier of entry. You can find free seeds through people around you and sometimes through the food you purchase in the grocery store.
  3. You will only become a better gardener through failures and successes so the sooner you start the fast you will develop this skill.

Listen to the podcast to learn 3 things you can do during the winter months to prepare for next year's garden.

One thing has worked for me over the years, allowing me to move forward in my goals without being too overwhelming. It's the one thing I've been consistent with over the past 10 years or so and it's the reason I have learned to trust myself and know that I can accomplish my goals no matter how big if I just do this one thing with consistency. That's what I'm going to be talking about today on episode 16 of the Homesteading for Beginners podcast.

014. Grow Income By Doing This First04 Nov 202200:17:51

012. Why Slowing Down is a Skill You Need to Learn.21 Oct 202200:16:57

When you think of the homesteading lifestyle is part of that picture you racing around trying to get all the stuff done on the farm? Or is it you have a pace that matches nature? A place where time is not your enemy and you have a more relaxed way about you.

Are you envisioning rest and calm or busyness and hurrying? If you are envisioning rest and calm then you must intentionally set up your life to create that.

Because the alternative is, you wish for rest and calm but you create busy and hurry n because you didn't actually learn how to slow down.

Let's stop creating busy and then blame busy for our business. How do we do that? By learning the skill of slowing down.

As homesteaders, we are creating a life close to nature. This is part of the appeal of this lifestyle for many people. Listen to episode 12 and hear more of my thoughts on this topic.

If you are listening to this after Sept 25th I'm so sorry you missed it. There's usually a new bundle about every 6 months and I plan to be a part of it again. It's been an amazing experience.

This bundle is a way for you to save a lot of money. You will be able to learn a ton of different homesteading skills by having access to over 140 digital books and courses. Plus, you will also get my new Homesteading for Beginners workbook in the bundle. The workbook is a more in-depth guide to getting you started. Over 100 different creators collaborated to put this bundle together.

You may even be following some of them on Instagram, Tiktok and Youtube. Be sure to listen to the end of this episode because a few of the creators have recorded a little bit about the products they have in this bundle. I thought it would be a nice touch for you to hear from a few of the creators themselves.

The topic I am discussing today is about skill building. Homesteading really is about skill building. It's about building skills that allow us to be more self-sufficient and sustainable. It's about having a set of skills that help ourselves, our families and our communities. It has a lot less to do with land size and more to do with how much we choose to produce instead of just consuming.

004. How To Get Started Homesteading: Checklist Part 426 Aug 202200:13:57

As a beginner, you are in a very good position because you can set yourself up in a way that avoids some pitfalls that come with this journey by listening to those that have gone ahead of you. I wish I had someone speak to my husband and me about what I'm going to share with you today.

Today we will be going over Part 4 of the Homesteading for Beginners checklist which covers the topic of saving money in preparation for your journey or projects on your homestead.

The topic of money is actually a huge pain point in a homesteader's journey. If you desire to one day have a piece of property or you have a piece of property and can't improve it, I share ways for you to find money to add to your homestead savings.

How much you want to save will have to do with what it is you are saving for. If you are saving for a down payment on a house with land, then this is likely going to take a long time but if you are saving for smaller things like a chicken coop then obviously it will take less time.

In either case, the way you save money is by reducing your spending or increasing your income or both. Listen to this episode to find money by reducing your spending and adding it to your savings account.

003. How To Get Started Homesteading: Checklist Part 319 Aug 202200:16:20

On a scale of 1- 10, with ten being the highest,  how important do you think dreaming is to your homesteading journey? For me, it's a 10. Why? Because dreaming is where it all begins.

Sure, we can do stuff without dreaming about it. Things can happen to us and for us without even any forethought on our part. But, if you desire to start a journey, that desire starts with dreaming about it.

If you think dreaming is a waste of time, I'm here to tell you it's one of the most important things you can do to set up a healthy homestead.

I share more about this and why I think this is true in this episode and I'll give you some of my own examples of how usefully dreaming has been in my own journey.

097. Homesteading for Moms: Navigating the Journey19 Apr 202400:14:24

Today, I'm diving into a topic close to my heart: homesteading as a mom. As a homesteading coach and a mother myself, I understand the unique challenges and rewards of juggling homesteading aspirations with the responsibilities of raising children, especially little ones. Here's what I've learned and want to share with you:

- Finding Balance: Being a mom and a homesteader means constantly balancing our desire to give our children the best with the demands of tending to our homestead. It's essential to avoid overcommitting and prioritize what truly matters for our family's well-being.
- Embracing Sustainability: While homesteading offers fantastic opportunities for our kids, it's crucial to approach it sustainably. I've learned the hard way that pacing ourselves and focusing on activities that are manageable and sustainable is key to long-term success.

Building a supportive homesteading community can make all the difference. Whether it's swapping tips or lending a hand, having others who understand the journey can be invaluable. And let's not forget the importance of self-compassion. As moms, we need to forgive ourselves for mistakes, prioritize our own well-being, and set goals that align with our values and family needs. By doing so, we can create a homesteading lifestyle that enriches both our lives and those of our children.

089. Homesteading Couples: How to Get Your Spouse On Board [Rebroadcast]16 Feb 202400:21:12

What do you do when your spouse or partner is not on board with your homesteading dreams? This is something I hear people struggling with all the time. One spouse is all into the idea of homesteading and the other has big reservations or is very against the idea.

Recently, I coach a member of my students through this very topic.

087. A LOVE/HATE Relationship with Farm Chores25 Jan 202400:20:10

Have you ever had a love/hate relationship with something? Well, I have a love/hate relationship with some of my farm work. I don't usually use the word hate, and there are very few things I actually hate. And I don't really hate any of my farm work. But I do strongly dislike some things, and I've come to realize that it's perfectly fine and normal not to love every part of your life. It's the things that challenge us that are often the reason we love the things we love.

Many tears have been shed throughout my homesteading journey, and a lot of those tears have been due to frustrations with farm work. My hands freezing while removing ice from water troughs and milking goats in below-zero temperatures (though the warm goat teats always warmed them up 😄) are two examples of these frustrating moments and have made me wonder why I chose to have a farm. Massive amounts of manure accumulate on every farm with farm animals. Sometimes it's hard to keep up with it. And the mud!! So much mud during rainy seasons.

Even though I have times of strong dislike for these things that make having a farm difficult, I still love the homesteading life. I love learning where my mind is limiting me from growth and pushing through it like a seedling emerging from its seed.

086. How to Start Homesteading in 2024: Free Checklist18 Jan 202400:13:28

If you are listening to this you are likely a new homesteader or homestead dreamer. You are either in the beginning years or the dreaming years of your journey.

It seems homesteading has gained in popularity these past few years. It's no surprise. Since 2020 people have been evaluating their quality of life and their health.

Sipping tea while sitting on your front porch overlooking the acres of land. Spending your days watching your chickens and goats enjoy the land you own and feeling very satisfied with all of the self-sufficiency skills you are learning in the process.

Having skills that make you feel less dependent on the grocery store because you know how to grow and raise your food.

These are the dreams many people are currently having. Well, in 2020 I realize my dream is to see more and more people live the homesteading lifestyle in the best way possible. This includes preventing bad starts and overwhelm.

On today's episode, I'm going to revisit the how to start a homestead topic. In the first 5 episodes of this podcast I go in more depth by following the Homesteading for Beginner checklist I create. But I've recently updated so I thought I'd go through the checklist again with the updated version.
