20 things I've learnt in my 20s 29 Aug 202300:33:12

Today we cover a couple of things I have come to learn in my 20s that i would share since it was my birthday just last week (yes Virgo in the house did you guess right?)

Updates/Additions Made 11/09/23

10:05 - Original "50% of people have an IQ of under 50 and that's not going to change..." - Corrected to "More than half the population have an average IQ and lack emotional intelligence and that's not going to change."

19:41 "I know it can seem judgemental and materialistic but this is the thing, people are just that. Let's be real, we live in a world where people are like that whether you like it or not and I think it's important." In addition to finishing that sentence, "I think it important.... to recognise that because some people are going to judge you on that and just be aware of it."

30:51 - "People value different things and that's okay" - additional "Some people really struggle to figure out what I mean when I say value and by that I mean interests like whether you value food and when I say food I mean food and beverage, eating out at restaurants, hospitality venues. Fashion meaning clothing items accessories etc., and travel meaning going overseas/abroad. Experiences meaning theatre going to theatre shows. People prioritise different things and put their money into different things and other people shouldn't judge those people on having different priorities and "values" i.e. interests, hobbies, priorities. I'm glad we've got that sorted"

Incorporate Colourful Homewares Like a Scandi 21 Jul 202300:11:49

How to add colour to your home like a Scandi via @hmhome

watch the original video tour here

1. Handpainted stripes

These candles are a great addition to any neutral space to add a pop of colour. What’s also great is once you’ve burnt through them, you can use these guys as glassware, makeup brush holder or a small vase.

2. A statement vase/sculpture.

Add instant character and something to offset the clean lines. This curved hand-drawn line design and curved form instantly looks good with or without flowers.

3. Punchy Blues.

particularly a blue stripe is known as ‘the Scandi accent’ to any home or wardrobe. I like our discussion has a bulb blue but then accented with a more neutral soft linen beige, so it doesn’t feel so stark. It’s softer which works well and makes it feel more elevated.

4. Add colour to small everyday functional pieces.

Like candles, table clothes and dishes.

5. Scandi style is about keeping cosy and soft regardless of season. These soft fluffy faux mohair blankets are perfect to achieve a soft colour, cosy nook.

6. Add a touch of Scandi cottage accents with frills and small florals if that’s your style. Or keep it urban with the bold stripes.

That’s it! Follow for more tips to achieve the home you want no matter if you’re renting or owning.

I've got answers! Lets make Easter 'Aesthetic' 13 Mar 202400:12:49

today, we're diving into a special Easter-themed episode. Yes, We’re looking to find creative ways to elevate the Easter-themed décor.

Let's kick things off with a fresh perspective on Easter décor. A lot that’s available in stores just isn’t it. The cutesy pastel plastic bits just speak too much to spring. If you’re in Australia doesn’t work with our climate, given we’re in autumn. And then if you’re like, 'okay not pastels,' you're left with astroturf bunnies or metal/bronze detailed hares, which speak to a more traditional style that might not suit all homes. So it's really difficult. There’s a whole lot of craft out there to speak to the kids, but where are the bits us adults want to enjoy these holidays? I think we get put on the back burner a bit, and if it's entirely for the kids, then I feel like naturally we adults just don’t get into it as much.

Heres my tips and inspiration to elevate your Easter décor with a harvest-themed twist.

Pantone has revealed its Colour of the Year for 2025: Mocha Mousse. A warming brown hue meant to nurture and comfort, but does it really capture the essence of where we’re heading? In this episode, I dive into Pantone’s choice, why it feels like déjà vu, and whether it reflects cultural trends—or plays it safe.

A New Chapter Begins - Welcome Fellow Friends in Home & Hosting01 Jul 202500:04:04

This is the official introduction to Fellow Friends in Home & Hosting — a new series within the podcast where I sit down with content creators from around the world to talk about what it really means to make a home.

So far, Home and Hosting has been a solo space — a place for me to share my thoughts on interiors, routines, and the feeling of home. But I’ve always believed in telling the world who you are before you’re given the title — and this series is just that. A space to shine a light on the creators who’ve built community, created beauty, and shared it all through the lens of home.

Whether you’re renting, renovating, or dreaming of your next move — these chats are full of inspiration, warmth, and the kind of thoughtful creativity that makes this niche anything but small.

Welcome to the series. I can’t wait to bring you along.

Whether you’re styling your rental or investing in your forever home, this is your guide to making smart, stylish decisions that last — plus, I’m sharing my favourite go-to brands (think MCM House, Interior Secrets, Life Interiors and more).

And if you want to see the exact pieces I’m loving right now, I’ll be posting a TikTok round-up with my top EOFY sale picks — don’t miss it.

WeddingTok and the One-Day Aesthetic: Beautiful for a Day, Boring for a Lifetime20 May 202500:07:49

You styled your wedding down to the last napkin—but what about your Tuesday night dinner at home?

In this episode of Home and Hosting, Loui dives into the world of WeddingTok and asks the big question: why do we allow ourselves to live beautifully for one day… but not every day? From the aesthetics of ambient lighting to the deeper psychology behind performance and presence, this is a conversation about taste, permission, and how we’re all secretly craving more beauty in our daily lives.

Plus, we talk about divorce stats (yep), the quiet shame around loving nice things, and why your matcha spoon deserves as much attention as your bridal bouquet.

If you’ve ever felt like daily life doesn’t get the Pinterest treatment it deserves, this one’s for you.

Still Haven’t Found Your "Personal Style?" — No wonder! The empty bedroom says it all16 May 202500:13:29

We need to talk about the way we’re chasing personal style right now—especially online. Everyone’s hunting for the next hot fashion item, the right silhouette, the “clean girl” formula... but maybe the reason you haven’t found your style yet isn’t your wardrobe. Maybe it’s your home.

In this episode, I’m breaking down why your interiors say more about your style than your outfits do—and why your bedroom, your kitchen, your everything is a reflection of how you care for yourself, not just how you present yourself. I talk about my own upbringing surrounded by hospitality and atmosphere, how lifestyle content has become a coping mechanism, and why the secret to taste isn't in the trends—it’s in the space you build around you.

Plus: we get into the trap of $99 colourful dopamine décor, why “chuck it on a tray” isn’t interior design, and how to actually start curating your style—through your space.

Home & Holidays: Why Are They Losing Their Spark?26 Apr 202500:08:26

With so much focus on escaping the daily grind, are we missing the deeper meaning of our traditions? Loui reflects on the simple, yet powerful gestures that bring meaning to our celebrations and explores how creating a true holiday experience goes beyond just checking boxes. Tune in for an honest conversation about what we’re really running from when it comes to holidays, home, and the traditions we once held dear.

Alexander Widener | From New York to Maine, and the Art of Timeless Craftsmanship and Design - Fellow Friends in Home & Hosting06 Aug 202500:59:42

In this episode, I’m joined by Alexander Widener (@Alexander_Widener) — a designer and storyteller whose world blends deep-rooted tradition with intentional living. After years in New York’s fast-paced interiors industry, Alexander made the move to coastal Maine, trading the city for a quieter life shaped by history, craft, and care.

We talk about his journey — from working in textiles and showrooms to opening his own guest cottage and store — and the values that guide his work: timeless design, slow decorating, and collecting with purpose. Whether it’s sourcing antiques, working with artisans, or simply letting a home evolve over time, Alexander brings a rare depth and warmth to everything he touches.

If you've ever romanticised a quieter life, craved more meaning in your space, or felt drawn to the old-world charm of craftsmanship and character, this one's for you.

Daniel Matthews | ' The Design Style With No Name' : Finding Home Through Colour, Character & Considered Chaos03 Sep 202501:01:57

In this episode of Fellow Friends in Home & Hosting, I’m joined by Daniel Matthews — the creative behind the beautifully layered and cleverly named @a.modest.semi.

We chat about the value of renting as a way to experiment with different styles, the emotional rollercoaster of a first-time renovation, and what it’s like designing a home through the eyes of a textile professional. Christmas Trends I Love (and Loathe) - Holiday Themes and How to style them19 Oct 202500:30:44

It’s officially that time of year, Christmas has arrived in every major Australian department store, and the themes are loud. From traditional reds and golds to ocean-inspired pastels, Australiana motifs, and candy-coated chaos - I’ve seen it all.

In this episode, I’m breaking down the biggest Christmas décor trends in Australia for 2025

What’s showing up at Myer, David Jones, Adairs, Bed Bath N’ Table, Target, and boutique homeware stores — and sharing which looks I actually love, and which ones I’d rather leave on the shelf.

We’ll talk about everything from the rise of Australiana and coastal Christmas styling to pink Christmas palettes, Ralph Lauren-inspired traditional looks, and the glass-droplet “romantic” trend that’s still lingering online.

Plus, I’ll share a few simple tips for reinventing your existing decorations - like changing ribbon colours, upgrading your tree, or using gift wrap as part of your décor.

Whether you’re team classic, coastal, or something in between, this episode will help you curate a festive home that feels intentional, elevated, and authentically Australian.

Ins and Outs of 2026 – New Year, Same Great Taste06 Jan 202600:26:23

New year, same great taste.

In this episode of Home and Hosting with Loui Burke, Loui breaks down the INs and Outs of 2026 through a home and hosting lens blending what leading designers and publications are forecasting with what people are actually searching for and living with right now.

Drawing from industry voices like Vogue Living, Studio McGee, Architectural Digest, and ELLE Decor, alongside real consumer behaviour from Google search trends, Loui unpacks what’s genuinely shifting and what’s quietly falling away.

This isn’t about chasing trends or reinventing your style. It’s about refining what already works, making smarter material choices, improving flow, and creating homes that feel better to live in and easier to host in.

Expect practical takeaways, real-world examples, and a good-time, optimistic start to the year.

OUTs for 2026

  • Homes that feel unresolved — furniture and layouts that worked in a different space, but haven’t been adapted to the current one

  • Neutral interiors that rely on colour alone, without enough material depth or texture

  • Stock-standard, default finishes (especially in new builds and developments) that don’t reflect the price or personality people expect

  • Homes that photograph well but make hosting harder than it needs to be — poor flow, no prep zones, no landing space

INs for 2026

  • Intentional restraint: sculptural, edited spaces where every element feels deliberate

  • Improving flow in kitchens, bathrooms, and high-use zones by reshuffling, decluttering, and re-zoning what you already own

  • Warmer kitchens with a furniture-like feel, timber details, and softer finishes

  • Calm front-of-house spaces paired with highly functional back-of-house storage and prep zones

  • Softer metals like silver, pewter, and brushed finishes — especially for hosting and table details

  • Blue used as a grounding neutral (not coastal or Hamptons) — think accent pieces, not themes

  • Darker timber used sparingly to add depth and contrast in neutral homes

  • Pattern reintroduced gently through textiles, table linen, and cushions

  • Textiles doing more than decoration — fabric, trims, and soft detailing adding warmth without clutter

  • One strong, anchoring art piece to resolve a space instead of lots of small objects

  • Vogue Living — editorial direction, city homes, material trends

  • Studio McGee (Shea McGee) — intentional restraint, warmer interiors

  • Amber Lewis — material honesty, darker woods, lived-in neutrality

  • Architectural Digest — layered interiors, textiles, large-scale art

  • ELLE Decor — finishes, metals, warmth and texture

  • Rising searches around making rental spaces feel personal and intentional

  • Increased interest in warmer kitchens, storage solutions, and hosting-friendly layouts

  • Growing demand for neutral interiors with texture, depth, and better materials

  • Searches for darker timber, blue accents, patterned textiles, and oversized art as finishing elements

2026 isn’t about buying more or starting again.

It’s about:

  • fewer things

  • better materials

  • stronger anchors

  • improved flow

  • and homes that support how you actually live and host

New year. Same great taste.

Feeling Out of Sorts? A Put-Together Guide for When Life Feels Off.02 Feb 202600:22:01

Feeling out of it? This one’s for you.

In this episode, Loui breaks down that very universal, very human moment where life just… doesn’t feel like it’s matching the version of yourself in your head.
Whether you’re in your late 20s, your 30s, the middle of a 40s reset, or deep in a 50s reroute. We all hit that point where things feel off-kilter.

Loui shares a warm, grounded blueprint for getting your life feeling purposeful again, with a focus on cohesion, clarity, and genuinely intentional living.
Not perfection. Not pressure. Just direction.

  • how aesthetics shape behaviour

  • why clutter keeps you stuck

  • the wardrobe reset that changes everything

  • routines that make you look (and feel) more put-together

You’re Doing Trends Wrong. Let’s Fix That. (There Are Two Forecasts: Trends & Weather)13 Feb 202600:21:08

I posted a video about decorating for the wrong season and it clearly stuck! So let’s unpack it.

In this episode I’m talking about the lost art of seasonal styling, why materials and colour have “temperature”, how retail launches distort what feels current, and why calling something timeless doesn’t make it immune to the trend cycle.

Your home should match the weather you’re living in, not just the trend forecast.

What Taste Actually Means (And Why We Confuse Taste, Class, Style and Trends)08 Mar 202600:20:18

In this episode of Home and Hosting, we explore what taste actually means and why people so often confuse taste, class, style and trends.

Conversations around taste always spark interesting discussions online, so we unpack how the words taste, class, style, and trends have started to blur together and why that causes so much confusion.

Style is talked about constantly, trends move faster than ever, and taste often gets avoided entirely because it can feel loaded or exclusive.

We also explore how social media has contributed to the TikTok-ification of design language, where everything becomes an “aesthetic”. When trends are packaged as aesthetics, it can make it seem like participating in the right trend means having taste, when in reality, those are very different things.

From there, we look at how taste actually develops through exposure, environment and experience. We touch on ideas from sociologist Pierre Bourdieu and the cultural landscape he was writing about in the late 1970s, and how the internet, globalisation and the pace of modern media have changed how people encounter culture today.

We also talk about why wealth can broaden exposure but does not automatically mean better taste, and how broader exposure can sometimes be treated as authority in the same way education or expertise can be used to signal status.

Most importantly, we explore how taste is shaped by the environments we live in and the experiences we have. It is not something reserved for a particular class or price point.

If you have ever felt unsure about the language around taste, design or aesthetics, this episode offers a thoughtful conversation about how to understand these ideas and apply them to your own home and daily life.
