06 Sep 2022
00:59:48
Doing something a little different on episode 35 of the Hollywood Editing Mentor Podcast. Gonna be talking all about health & wellness, something that I’m truly interested in and get excited about. It’s a topic that I hadn’t touched upon in a while and something that I wanted to do again on this show, but was just waiting to meet the right person to do it with.
And that person happens to be my guest on episode 35 - Lydia Hurlbut is CEO of the Filmmakers Academy, which was founded in 2009 as a business that delivers outstanding professional education and mentorship to filmmakers worldwide.
Hurlbut earned her master’s degree in forensic nursing at the University of Virginia. From there, her career path journeyed through pediatric nursing and forensic science to life coaching and strategic marketing. She is passionate about wellness and techniques for improving health.
Lydia and I met in 2021 for the first time and we really connected on this topic about health and wellness, and agreed on how taking care of our mind and body can lead us to finding success in the film and television industry.
As someone that struggled with his health for many years, it wasn’t until I started practicing healthier habits such as exercising regularly, eating nutritious meals, getting proper sleep, meditating, creating a daily routine, and developing a more positive mindset (which I feel I also achieved by going to therapy) - it was all this that played a huge role in achieving my dream of working in film & scripted television.
It’s important to identify what works for your journey. We’re just here to present what’s out there and also share our personal stories regarding health and wellness, so that you hopefully find the inspiration and motivation to help you reach your goals and also maybe discover something new about yourself along the way.

Ep. 29 - Developing a Leadership Mindset and Learning To Be a Well-Rounded Filmmaker with Shane Hurlbut, ASC
10 May 2022
01:23:18
Learning to be a leader and a well-rounded filmmaker are certainly two things that will help you stand out as an editor.
A big part of being an editor is having good leadership skills in order to motivate and enable others to contribute towards the success of a production. Also being more knowledgeable of other subjects like cinematography, screenwriting, directing, music composition, or sound design can help you communicate more effectively with other creatives and lead to a long-lasting, successful career. As Roger Nygard, ACE said in a previous episode of the podcast - "Don't be an editor who cuts films, be a filmmaker who edits."
My guest on episode 29 is director of photography Shane Hurlbut, ASC (THE RIM OF THE WORLD, TERMINATOR: SALVATION, WE ARE MARSHALL, NEED FOR SPEED) and he shares advice on how you can become a better leader and also talks about his role as an educator through various online platforms including the Filmmakers Academy which he started last year.

Some of the topics Shane and I will be discussing on the show today include the importance of developing resilience to thrive in this industry, the future of cinematography, overcoming challenges when trying to break into feature films, how to shine a spotlight on yourself and stand out from others, choosing the right projects to work on, the importance of having a significant other that supports your career goals, and we’ll hear all about the Filmmakers Academy!

There's some great insight here from a successful editing team that has worked on very big shows including MR. ROBOT, HOMECOMING, BLOODLINE, TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN, and AMERICAN HORROR STORY.
Some of the topics discussed in this episode include what questions an assistant editor can ask their editor when they're working together for the first time, why an assistant editor is a creative partner, why you don't need to have scripted TV credits to work on a scripted TV show, how editors can help their assistants move their career forward, how Justin and Chris collaborated on a cool montage sequence in episode 7 of WECRASHED, and a deeper behind-the-scenes look at their experience cutting the Apple TV+ series. ---------
