Episode 138 - PUPPIES 8-12 weeks

Épisode 138

samedi 15 novembre 2025Durée 01:01:45

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃

Here I waffle randomly about what I'm doing with puppies in this age range. It doesn't really involve much gundog-specific stuff, because it's about helping pups to feel safe in the world.

Episode 137 - the value of picking up and some thoughts about docking

Épisode 137

jeudi 30 octobre 2025Durée 45:17

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃

I talk here about the advantages of picking up, especially for HPR breeds (spaniels would also benefit for similar reasons) - and also offer some thoughts about docking after our experiences with our recent litter of Weim pups.

Episode 128 - enjoying the journey and structuring your training on blinds

Épisode 128

mercredi 26 mars 2025Durée 30:37

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃

I talk about prioritising your enjoyment of the actual activity of working your dog in the field, separate to any achievements, goals or objectives. It's not about the destination, it's about the journey.

I also talk about the importance of splitting your training and structuring your work with blinds. Be a lumper and not a splitter.

Finally, we've moved our breeding from Roche (Weim) forwards and everything is a leetle beet manic, chez nous....

Episode 38 - Puppy exercise and developing food motivation

Épisode 38

jeudi 6 août 2020Durée 43:49

Episode 37 - questions about transitioning the clicker retrieve to outdoors and popping on retrieves

Épisode 37

mardi 7 juillet 2020Durée 16:18

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃

Two listener questions...

Episode 36 - putting handling together

Épisode 36

mercredi 17 juin 2020Durée 43:05

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃

Here is a link to the video from Fanny Gott where a dog learns to work around a female in season.

Episode 35 - what to do with dogs that disappoint us

Épisode 35

mardi 2 juin 2020Durée 16:52

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃

I ponder the options available when we are disappointed by a dog which fails to live up to our expectations in some way.

Episode 34 - 3-in-a-row drill and listener questions

Épisode 34

vendredi 22 mai 2020Durée 49:41

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃

Today I answer questions about biting puppies and recall problems in hunting dogs. I also describe another great lining drill, the 3-in-a-row drill.

Episode 33 - Wagonwheels and 'settling' dogs down

Épisode 33

mercredi 15 avril 2020Durée 33:25

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃

In this episode, I describe a 4-spoked and 8-spoked wagonwheel lining drill - which requires very little space to train, so can be done in your yard or garden.

I also answer a listener's question about settling her dog down in various different settings.

Episode 32 - Exercising and socialising during the coronavirus

Épisode 32

vendredi 27 mars 2020Durée 38:34

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃

I ponder the implications of the recent 'lockdown' in the UK:  Can you drive a short distance to exercise your dog in a remote area, or do you have to exercise in a crowded place where everyone else is?

And how do we socialise puppies so they grow up to be well-adjusted, despite all these restrictions on daily life?
